I wrote a year ago about this electric foot warmer being one of my favorite little things — and it continues to be! I primarily use it for when I get into bed and my toes are cold, but I've also used it when I've got cramps or when my back is sore or stiff, and my sons have used it when they have stomachaches.
It's easy and affordable, it heats up quickly, and it's super snuggly.
I'm often cold, so we've tried a lot of products for electric heat. We have an electric mattress pad and an electric throw blanket as well, but they're buried in a closet somewhere because I so prefer this smaller product to the larger versions.
The one I bought (which I remember being from Sunbeam but Amazon tells me is from “Gintao,” which, OK) is $47; Zulily has one from Bluestone for $21 today (but stock may be low). There are some parallel products that look like they do the same. Sharper Image has a ton of heated slippers and the like, for example. Amazon also seems to have a number of parallel products, including this purple one for $29.) QVC does actually have one from Sunbeam, but it doesn't have the pocket for your feet (it's just a smaller heating pad).

I’ve struggled with GERD for over a decade, but got it mostly under control since I lost 50 pounds. For several weeks, I’ve had a firey feeling in my windpipe. It’s not like any symptom I’ve had before–it’s definitely in my air tube rather than my esophagus, and it feels just like the burn you get from hard jogging in frigid weather.
I have been insanely stressed due to several family crises (in addition to the general state of the world), but the novelty of this symptom has me worried. Should I be getting tested for Covid? I don’t want to cry wolf if it’s just a weird new reflux thing, but my work requires me to be on-site, and they have 1-3 positives per week. Exposure is feasible, though not certain.
anon
At the very least, talk to your PCP and see what he/she thinks. It does sound like a worrisome symptom, but even if it’s not COVID, clearly something else is going on!
Anonymous
I would definitely get tested if people at your worksite have been positive. Even if everyone is masked, they don’t provide 100% protection.
anon
sure, that’s what we have tests for!
Anonymous
I’ve been getting a similar feeling from allergies & assume it’s allergies because Benadryl stops the sensation … just a possibility to try. But I wouldn’t hesitate to take a test either.
Anon
I’d speak to your GP–I had Covid (and I have asthma) and at least for me, Covid had a wheezing/constricting feeling, but not a burning feeling. GL!

Can anyone comment on the quality of Naadam’s cashmere? I’m planning on getting some if we think it’s good value.
Anon
Really soft, but mine pilled like crazy! I ended up having an extended debate with their customer service rep, since their policy is to only offer store credit if you’ve worn the item (even though I only wore it once and was immediately disappointed!)
I’ll be curious if others have had different experiences… I can’t tell if my product was a fluke or they’ve just mastered the game of internet marketing….
Betsy
I would say it’s decent. My sister has their sweaters and likes them. I have their cashmere pants and find that the thighs wear out fast, but I think that’s just a case of cashmere not really being the best material to make pants out of even if it does feel like wearing a cloud!
anonyK
I have a few items and am happy with the quality for price (especially on sale) but I haven’t had them longer than a month or two so can’t comment on longevity.
kk
I have a big cozy cableknit turtleneck cashmere sweater from them- I think its great, but I would think that the black and cableknit hides any flaws. I can’t speak to other styles.

Paging the poster who mentioned Good Eggs this morning (in case you don’t check back) – can you say more about the company? It looks really intriguing but I had never heard of it and would love to hear if you have found it to be a good source for everyday groceries and delivery. I would love to move away from Amazon-owned Whole Foods delivery.
Note to everyone else: we have a high-risk person in our household and will be continuing with delivery. We tip at least $15 on every order and have upped our charitable donations big-time this year too.
Anonymous
Ok? I started that whole kerfuffle and wasn’t judging anyone who chooses delivery. Like I said, I’m low risk so I’m not having someone else do this for me. If you’re high risk or making a different choice go ahead and do that. You don’t have to justify it and be defensive.
Good Eggs anon
I love Good Eggs! You could do all your grocery shopping through them and eat really well.
Good Eggs is delivery only and they’re committed to treating their workers well. Their workers are employees with paid sick leave and employer-provided health insurance, which is good for all of us these days. I really appreciate that there’s no tipping—I think it’s much better for employees to receive a fair, predictable wage and not have to rely on the generosity of the customer.
Good Eggs is a little pricey for me to use for everything, though. Their fee structure incentivizes fewer, bigger orders, so I’ll put in a big order once a month. For weekly produce and milk, I use Farm Fresh to You and for shelf-stable basics like oats and cereal, I use Vitacost.
As far as I know, Good Eggs is Bay Area only and Farm Fresh to You is limited to driving distance from the Capay Valley, so Bay Area, maybe Sacramento as well.
Anonymous
Thank you – this is super helpful! I always appreciate context on pricing/your strategies for ordering.

Just a rant, scroll on by if you want.
The entire court clerks office is COVID positive, and court is going on as usual. It’s not even like they are working but have the door closed. They are out and about in the courthouse and in the courtrooms, going around other court personnel and lawyers. As in within a few feet of them. I hate this and am having a hard time not hating these people. Like really hating them.
Anon
OMG what? How insane! This is legit how people pass it to at-risk people and kill them.
Anonymous
And this is why we need to keep jury trials shut down.

How do you know this? Has the media been alerted?

This is literally insane
Senior Attorney
OMG how is that even possible? Horrifying.

Can you say where you are? Otherwise your post is just increasing fear without leading to action. If you won’t tip off the DOH, I will.
Anon
Call the Dept of Health? Tip off the press? That is terrible!! Meanwhile, my local federal courthouse is shutting down for days over secondary exposures. Like if an employee’s spouse tests positive. It’s crazy how our country can have such extremes.
Anonymous
Yes, you need to call the Department of Health. Not even courts are above the law (assuming you have public health orders in place).
anon
That is beyond awful. What the actual he!!. I hate people.
Anon
Where is this happening?
Anonymous
Where?
Why are they + but at work even if they feel fine? Doesn’t a + require a 14 day quarantine? Can you just refuse to go to court?
Of Counsel
If you are an attorney – no. You cannot just refuse to go to court. Not appearing can result in your client being held in default in a civil matter or arrested in a criminal one. At the very least you would face sanctions.
And I am not sure where the OP is, but this has been a huge problem for a lot of California courts. Court staff and Sheriff’s Deputes are getting sick all over the place but trials are still going on (civil and criminal). And trial dates in early 2021 are still on calendar which means we are in the middle of expert discovery, not all of which can be done remotely. (Not to mention our poor process servers trying to serve non-retained experts.) The presiding judges keep saying it is safe when it is so clearly not. I am beyond furious.
And final note – separation of powers means the the County/State cannot shut them down. Only the Presiding Judge can do that.

Making a calendar out of our own photos for a relative – where should I look to get it printed? Shutterfly?
AIMS
I do one on Shutterfly for grandparents every year and am happy with the finished product.
anonyK
+1 I have a longer comment stuck in moderation…
anonyK
I do this for my parents annually (combining photos with my siblings so all the kids/grandkids are covered). I have been using shutterfly and have been satisfied. The interface for making the calendar is pretty easy to work with and very customizable once you get used to how to use it. Uploading is not that tedious- especially if you use the shutterfly app to upload. If you have an iphone that saves images as heic files, it can be a pain to convert them and the app lets you avoid this.
Abby
I did shutterfly before and liked it quite a bit! they frequently have sales, I believe once I got the calendar for free and just paid for shipping, so definitely look for the deals
Vicky Austin
Awesome! I think they’re running a good one today so I’ll try to get my photos together. Thank you all!
Anonymous
While I love Shutterfly, I had to pay extra last night to get something by XMas. Plus they’ve added a nominal Covid-19 fee. The fees were offset by the sale, so I went with it…just a heads up.
Anon
yea, never pay full price for shutterfly. There is always a coupon code of some sort.

Hi Hive! Looking for Tucsan, AZ recommendations. Would like to send a friend gift card(s) for restaurant/cafe/bakery. Hoping to spend $100 total. They live ou lo tside of Tucsan and come into town for biweekly errands, etc…so somewhere that’s good for takeout right now and hopefully in person in the future.
Anonymous
Prep and Pastry, Barrio Bread, Boca Tacos, Barrio Brewing if they like microbrew and the food is good too.
AZCPA
I won’t touch any of the places mentioned in the earlier post. And they may be super inconvenient depending on what side of town they are doing their business. But Tucson does have lots of great food. Would want to know what side of Tucson they are coming from and doing their errands to better suggest, but:
Ghinis, Nadines, or Beyond Bread for a bakery (the last also for cafe). For food, El Charro, Zona 78, Zeal Patisserie, Graze Burgers, Fresh Sushi Pho Sensei Thai.
AIMS
Talk to me about Mason Pearson brushes. Are they worth it? Why are they worth it? What kind of hair do you have if you love them?
I was thinking of getting one as either a gift to self or for my mom or maybe both and can’t decide to quite go for it and it’s not the kind of thing I would return so thought I’d ask here since I know we have so fans.
Anonymous
They are nice brushes and I don’t regret buying them but I am much more impressed with Tangle Teezer. I have a lot of fine straight hair.
Maudie Atkinson
I love mine, and I think it’s kind of the perfect thing to give someone as a gift–a splurge-y version of something that is very practical and will last forever. At least, that’s my platonic ideal of a good gift.
That said, are they worth it? Hard to say. I also have the Denman “Finisher” dupe, which is about 1/3 the cost of the Mason Pearson. I can definitely tell a difference between the two; my hair feels smoother and softer when I use the Mason Pearson, and it feels better on my scalp than the Denman. Is it 3x better? Probably not, but (especially from a cost-per-use perspective) the Mason Pearson brings me a lot of joy.
blueberry
Wait are fancy hair brushes a thing? I didn’t know what to say I wanted for Christmas but I would absolutely love that. Right now I’m bowled over by this conair detangling comb I have, so my standards may not be high. But any suggestions for long wavy hair?
Anon
Denman for sure. Just Google it and you’ll see lots of videos for using it on curly/wavy hair.
I have Denman brushes over a decade old. I bought them before they were trendy! But basically I buy whatever my hairdresser tells me to buy, and boy was she right about this one.
Maudie Atkinson
Blueberry, if you think you would love a fancy hairbrush, you are probably right that you would, and if you’re looking for things to say you would like as a gift for whatever occasion, I would go ahead and ask for the Mason Pearson one rather than the Denman.
givemyregards
+1 I wanted one forever but could never bring myself to spend the money and it finally occurred to me to ask my husband to get it for me as a gift. I have to say it is worth it – I had a $20 knock off version and the mason pearson brush leaves my hair so much softer and silkier. I’m not sure I would have believed it because it seems so insane to spend over $100 for a hair brush.
LaurenB
I have wondered the same. Are they appreciably better than … I guess the hairbrushes I get at Target or Walgreens and use for years? I have stick-straight hair.
AIMS
Thanks all! I think the answer is I get one for my mom and then I get to try it and see if I also need one!
Whiskey
Paging all the whiskey drinkers on this board – I’d like to get my husband a nice bottle of whiskey for Christmas. He really likes Knob Creek (the $24ish one), and I know he doesn’t like rye whiskeys. Can anyone recommend a nice bottle that could be a bit of an “upgrade” from the Knob Creek he likes? I’d like to spend around $50.
Anon
Blantons if you can find it, Woodford Reserve if you can’t. I don’t think you can go wrong with either. Another that’s great if you can find it is Henry McKenna 10 yr bottled in bond. Also, my husband really likes Michter’s single barrel.
pugsnbourbon
+1 to Blanton’s and Michter’s. Mmmmm.
Knob Creek sometimes puts out a maple bourbon for the holidays – it is not good. So skip that.
Friday
Four Roses, Weller (when I can find it), Basil Hayden’s.
Anonymous
Second Weller and Basil Hayden’s.
Anonymous
Four Roses or Buffalo Trace
anon a mouse
It depends on how much the markup is where you live, but in order of preference, I’d suggest:
Weller Special Reserve (may be $30 or $90 depending on where you live, if it’s $30 it’s the best value for money in bourbon, hands down)
McKenna Bottled in Bond
Michter’s Sour Mash
Four Roses Small Batch (or Single Barrel if you can keep it close to your price range)
Also, if you know he likes Knob Creek, you could also look for the single barrel or 12-year.
Abby
Plugging a detroit distillery: two james! They are sold all over the country, I think their website can help search where to find them in your area. I think Johnny Smoking Gun is the best. Another great option is High West Whiskey, from Park City, Utah.
Anon
Basil Hayden’s or Angel’s Envy.
Anon
Sorry, reading fail. Angel’s Envy is a rye. It is still fantastic, though.
Anon
Angel’s Envy has both a bourbon and a rye. The bourbon is finished in port barrels, the rye in rum barrels.
Anonymous
Angel’s Envy has both a rye and a bourbon style whiskey. The bottle is lovely too so it makes for a fun gift.
Anon
The price of whiskey depends a lot on where you live.
My recommendations:
Angel’s Envy
Eagle Rare
Maker’s Cask Strength
Woodford. There’s the normal Woodford, and also the Baccarat edition (finished in cognac barrels).
Any single barrel. Distilleries usually are very careful about anything sold as a single barrel; if the barrel isn’t all that great, it will do bad things for the brand. This does NOT apply to “small batch” bourbons; there’s no set definition for small batch, so the distillery can mix many barrels together and label it “small batch.”
If you want to hunt for rare bourbons (Blanton’s, Weller, etc.), go to the liquor stores that sell a high volume of normal bourbons from that brand. Buffalo Trace uses the rare bourbons as a reward for their distributors; stores that stock and sell a lot of their other product get priority access to Blanton’s and the rest. They are still hard to find and you have to get lucky, but it shows you were to look.
Anon
Ignore what I said about Woodford Baccarat – it’s in the four figures.
anon
They’re usually closer to $60 where I am in NY, but Redbreast 12 and Green Spot are both crowdpleasers.
NYNY
Do you live in an area with local indie distilleries? That can be a fun way to shop local and support small business. My husband really likes Breuckelen Distilling’s 77 Whiskey New York Wheat, and I’m a fan of Black Dirt’s bourbon, especially their single barrel version.
Electric blanket
Can I drape an electric blanket (or similar thing) over my shoulders? This post is making me think I should get an electric heated thing for our balcony which is freezing (midwest winter) but has a handy power outlet. My feet are usually fine, but my arms and hands get cold when I read outside.
Anon
Of course!
anon
Oooh, this sounds cozy and wonderful. Dooo it.
Panda Bear
I am constantly wrapped in an electric throw blanket while sitting at my desk. Got mine at bed bath and beyond, I think.
Unsub
My Sunbeam electric throw is currently my favorite thing. Got it at Walmart.

Stories from Teaching in the Zoom Land
One of my university students booked a presentation assignment for 9 AM on Saturday (there’s no way around it basically, I work a lot of Saturdays) and then didn’t show up. He was my first interview scheduled so I paid for childcare for an extra hour for him and got up early for him. Because of how the course works I had to sit there on video for half an hour instead of ending the session when he wasn’t showing up.
So I send him a nice message and told him we could reschedule (which I’m not required to do).
Anyway he rescheduled unilaterally for 7AM today (and I sent him an email essentially saying no way but that I could do the evening tonight). And he reported me for not showing up to his meeting.
So I sent copies of the previous emails including his no show assignment from Saturday and he now has a zero. I don’t know why people have to suck so much sometimes.
But anyway I was a bit stunned. I legitimately tried to help this person who messed up my Saturday and he turned around and tried to get me in trouble.
Anon
Gosh, that does suck.
Anon
The student’s behavior is so bad that I hope the university has some way to discipline him beyond the 0. He has to learn he can’t pull a stunt like that.
Vicky Austin
Well, he sounds like a straight-up ass, and I’m glad you had the documentation!

My swing ear piercing, right above the usual piercings, is so much more sensitive than my main piercing. It’s not new so that’s not it. Even 14k earrings will start to itch after about 1/2 day.
Any ideas of earring materials I can wear so that I can make use of the piercings?
Anonymous
If gold doesn’t even work, how about those plastic post covers? I’ve used them occasionally for my nickel sensitivity.
Anon
Not swing piercing. Second piercing but thanks Siri.
anon
I had an issue for a while where my piercings were sensitive to everything, even 14k earrings, and then it just sort of went away. Turned out to be connected to seasonal allergies, and now I’m back to wearing even cheap earrings with no issues.
You could also try clear nail polish on your earring posts.

I had this issue and ultimately let the holes close. Over time it started spreading down to my primary piercings. I tried everything, and was able to wear 24K gold but that left my options much more limited for that piercing (I wanted to wear more fun/funky pieces).
Man crates
I saw the recommendation for man crates on the earlier thread and just checked out their website. Looks like a fun gift, but there are so many to choose from. Which ones have you found to be a hit? I’m looking at the whiskey one or the bacon one possibly, but there are others that look fun too. Struggling with a gift idea for my SO.

Hope this nesting doesn’t fail. For Christmas, the 8 of us who would normally be together will be doing Zoom. (We weren’t all together at TG either, to forestall questioning.) We will be in 4 households – this includes a 77 yo (who is young at heart and up for anything), two couples in 40s and 50s, two young adults and a teenager. We are all in the same metro area and I’ll be assembling / delivering all gifts to the relevant households in a no-contact manner so we can all watch another open as we normally would. So the question is – what fun activities/games/etc can we 4 households play over Zoom or similar? If we were together, we would do Cards Against Humanity so nothing is off the table :-)
Carrots
I think there’s an open sourced online version of Cards Against Humanity, so if that’s a yearly tradition, you can still have it!

Proud mom brag: My son just called to say he passed the exam for his MFT (marriage and family therapist) license today.
