Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
As an elder millennial, it’s impossible for me to see a jacket like this one without humming the Cake song from the early aughts, but I do think this long blazer from Nic + Zoe would be an incredibly versatile business casual piece. OK fine, I probably wouldn’t pair it with a short skirt, but I think we can all agree that it would go beautifully with a pair of slim-fitting trousers or even layered over a pair of dark skinny jeans. (And fingernails that shine like justice are always in style.)
To my eye, the knit fabric skews a bit more casual, so I would probably keep this to a business casual or casual setting.
The jacket is $148 at Nordstrom and comes in sizes XS–XL. It’s also available in a handful of lucky petite sizes, although they’re inexplicably $10 more. Sizes are selling out quickly, so try Bloomingdale’s, which has more available, including plus.

I can’t decide whether this is amazing and sleek or looks too much like a cardigan.
Anonymous
I don’t think it’s possible to tell until you try it on.
Anonymous
I vote cardigan.
Anon
I think it skews frumpy, but also I’m a pear so avoid tops that hit at my thighs
anonshmanon
I would really like to find that t-shirt, but I’m striking out on the Nordstrom search.
Anon
These soft knit blazers always look terrible on me. I need some structure to avoid looking like a lump.
Anon
GibsonLook has structured soft blazers! they are the only ones I can wear.
Anonymous
I have this blazer in purple and LOVE it – hated the MMLF and J.Crew ones, lumpy dumpy. This one is a relatively stiff fabric (like the newer J.Crew ones), has shoulder pads, pockets, and a lot more shape. I’m a 16P apple and think it looks way, way more flattering than any of the other ones out there. (The Talbots one was surprisingly short if you only like ones that hit at the top of your hip bones, this one hits closer to the bottom of my hip bones.)
Anon
Thank you. As a tall I love a blazer this length and I’m happy to hear it has some structure in the fabric!
Anon
I hate to buy more things but I’m finding that my hiking boots are not idea for walking the dog on very rainy days. They have been fine in light rain or when the streets are very wet (we have sinking sidewalks, so they are often waterlogged after a rain). Do I want ankle-length rubber boots or something higher (like OG Hunter boots)? My raincoat doesn’t come down super far (and I have a giant dog so I don’t even try with an umbrella). Also, is a lining worth it? Climate is more damp/rainy in the winter (and it hasn’t snowed in years) but is rainy all 4 seasons (Carolinas). Some days I just get soaked, but having to re-use boots that are wet still on the inside is horrible in cold weather when it rains all day long (so no delaying for an hour to wait out the rain; delaying isn’t even an option on weekday mornings anyway).
AIMS
I would go for something mid calf that’s easy to put in and off. If you get a lot of rainy weather in the spring/fall too I would just go for regular boots and get a warm liner like this: https://www.hunterboots.com/us/en_us/-socks-insoles/original-luxury-shearling-insoles/white/246
(incidentally, we’ve never been able to make the sock liner version of this comfortable, but I buy the insoles for my kids and they love them & it’s perfect for most of NY wet winter days save for when we get a real snow storm).
Anon
Bean boots.
Anonymous
This is the answer. Bonus, they’ll last for decades.
Anon
My Bean Boots are so slippery! I seldom wear them because of this.
Cat
Same, I sold my Bean boots because while they might be great in grass and mud, they are a disaster on smooth stones or grates!
I would go mid-calf rain boots and buy them so they can accommodate their own fleece liners or thick socks.
Anon
LL Bean Boots plus an unlined calf rain coat. Wear a base layer under to match the weather. If it gets really rainy, consider rain pants but I think the combo above should generally work
Anon
This advice is spot on
Anon
Re the rain pants . . . I have them and they are a hair tight in the seat so I don’t wear them b/c I am afraid I’ll do an incredible Hulk and bust out of them. Oy. I can shop my problems away, at least some of them :)
Sallyanne
I live in PNW and have multiple boots and coats. What I reach for most often are my Ugg Chelsea rain boots and a Patagonia thigh length raincoat. I’ve had multiple pairs of Hunters but find them bulky and heavy. I’ve not tried the Bean Boots but I know I don’t want to fuss with laces when my dog just needs to get out the door and coming back in cleaning up a wet dog. Yes, to layers. I find a vest works well.
Anonymous
An easy and cheap solution to the raincoat issue is to just get a waterproof poncho that you can put over any other insulating layer or coat you need.
Anon
I am in Atlanta, so similar climate depending on where in the Carolinas you are. I alternate between tall Hunter boots and Barbour rubber clogs depending on how wet a day we’re talking. I love Bean boots but I prefer shoes without laces for dog walking. No liners, just wool socks. If it’s actually pouring rain I use an umbrella; otherwise I just wear my BR trench or a knee length puffer. Either can handle light rain.
Anon
I bought proper rainboots and have almost never worn them because they’re not comfortable enough, and because I don’t like to change my shoes when I arrive at work. Instead I wear the waterproof Blondos I bought for a trip to Europe. This was for a bus commute though, so maybe they’d wear out faster on daily dog walks; I’m not sure.
Anon
I lived in the Triangle and wore LL Bean snow sneakers, which are waterproof and comfortable for dog walking.
Curious
My parents like the Skechers knock offs of these and find them less slippery.
Anonymous
I bought a prior version of these for mud season at the barn, but have ended up wearing them as rain boots (also in the Carolinas): https://www.doversaddlery.com/ne-prfct-fit-all-seasn-high-bt/p/X1-381391/
Another Barn Rat
Or the Mudruckers boots!
Elle
Also live in the Carolinas- I have the sperry bean boot knock offs (I think they call them the duck boot) great grip and they have a zipper on the side which makes them much easier to get into! I love them for walking the dog. I do a poncho over whatever jacket is comfortable for the temperatures.
Anon
I would get high waterproof hiking boots if you do a lot of walking. My rain boots aren’t great on a walk, they’re more of an around the yard boot.
AIMS
I recently bought a long puffer coat (aritzia duvet), which is great in all ways except that it has button snaps instead of a zipper. I’m unfortunately past the return window (which was very narrow to begin with), and the buttons unsnap at the bottom whenever I walk too fast. Has anyone successfully added a zipper to something like this or is this a doomed effort? Should I try and see if this is something my local cleaner can do? Get a more advanced professional? Is there another solution I’m missing? Maybe little hooks? I’m just annoyed because I’m now stuck with this coat that is supposed to be there for the coldest days and it keep popping open whenever I walk at my usual hurried pace.
Anon
Doesn’t sound worth the effort to me cost wise to add a zipper, it worth asking the cleaner? I’d probably just get the Uniqlo puffer that zips up.
Anon
I would cut my losses, sell it (you could probably get a decent amount of money back considering it’s a popular brand) and get a new coat.

Dress Shopping Help
Vicarious shopping help needed – either specific dresses/outfits, brands to consider, or stores/online sites. I will be attending a wedding on a Sat night in New Orleans in late Feb; dress code is “New Orleans cocktail – colorful and whatever makes you feel great.” Footwear is the dilemma – I am 12 weeks post foot surgery, and my foot (and esp toes) remain swollen to the point that the only full shoe I can wear right now is an oversize sneaker with a wide toe box. Following extensive research over the weekend, I have determined I can wear a flatform shoe in my size – so those chunky/kind of clunky shoes that have adjustable velcro straps across the top (google “chanel dad sandals” for a sense of what I mean). My dilemma? What do I wear with this? A maxi that covers the foot? Dressy pants/top combo? How do I manage not to look like I got lost on the way to the beach? For context, am 60 +pear, about an 8/10, no big slits, cut-outs, open backs; need to avoid white and black. Budget around $300 if possible; more if it is something I will get further use from. I am at a total loss about how to pull this off. Help!
Anon
Farm Rio midi dress should be festive and comfy and within your budget. NO can have chilly Feb nights, so faux fur puffer on top? I see kids in my city in sneaks and formalwear all the time.
Anonymous
OP here – so funny you should mention that brand. Was looking at their site last night and was super intrigued by this set: https://www.farmrio.com/products/leopard-mushroom-lenzing-ecovero-viscose-pants
Did not pull trigger, however, as ultimately decided I might look like I was wearing PJs.
Anonymous
Wear your sneaker so it is obviously a mobility thing and a fabulous cocktail dress
Anon
Maybe it’s just the crowd I run in, but you’d fit right in at any occasion with a midi dress and Birks. It’s practically the 60+ pear 8/10 uniform in my medium southeastern city.
Anon
I think you’re just going to have to acknowledge these aren’t the shoes you’d normally wear but pair it with a fabulous dress.
My kid broke their big toe and was in the medical device version of this shoe that was just ugly enough to look like a offbeat designer shoe out of the corner of your eye… Weird when fashion and function collide!
NYCer
Oliphant has some pretty maxi dresses that would work with that style sandal and would fit within that dress code.
Anon
I wouldn’t get a new pair of shoes. You just had surgery! What if the new shoes are uncomfortable? Prioritize your comfort and safety as you’re still healing. Wear whatever you’ve been wearing. People will understand.
Anon
As for the dress, I would wear something fabulous with the wide toe sneakers. I broke my ankle and had to wear a boot for 3 months, plus a platform sneaker on the other foot to be the same height as the boot. It didn’t stop me from wearing business formal to work (skirt suits and dresses, those were the days).
Anon
I would personally get fun sneakers and pair them with a fabulous dress. The sandals sound horrible and sneakers are a more current look. You can still explain. Excuse to get some fun golden gooses. For context, I’m on the west coast and have seen thot look at galas here where it’s too uncomfortable to stand all night in heels.
Anonymous
This, except I would also consider a dressy jumpsuit with a short faux fur jacket. I would also go all-out on grooming–hairstyle, manicure, makeup–to help the sneakers look intentional and edgy rather than sloppy or frumpy.
anon.
New Orleanian here! All the advice you have is perfect. Honestly I’m wearing flat sandals to “events” all year long here. If you had foot surgery, buy some gold Birkenstocks and break them in now – they’ll be perfect with all of these dress choices.
Anon
I was just in NOLA and many young women were running around in adorable dresses and pant suits with converse sneakers.
Anonymous
Op here – thanks all! to be clear – I don’t want to invest in another pair of oversize sneakers b/c I will only need a couple of more months and the pair I have now are black New Balances – the opposite of cute. I love the ideas of Birks – those I can get it my normal size and just adjust across the top for my one franken-foot. Thanks to whomever recommended Oliphant – that has taken me down the Tuckernuck and Halsbrook rabbit holes, and am finding lots of possibilities there. Appreciate all the input! Will rock my flowy dress and Birkenstocks!
DeepSouth
look at Anthropologie for dresses. NOLA loves shiny — you could do a maxi dress with some embellishment and then do a fun fashion sneaker with some sparkle or in a dramatic color, or get metallic Birkenstocks, whichever are more your style.
You had surgery — be kind to your foot and lean into the comfort and the fact that you had the good fortune to have this during the fashion sneaker era.
Anon
I’d wear the sneakers and a beautiful maxi dress. I like the idea of farm Rio.
theguvnah

I always pictured the loooooooong jacket in that song to be like a trenchcoat or something. At least longer than the skirt.
Anon
As did I
Anon
yeah, this is laughably not what the song is talking about
Anon
Agreed. I thought everyone knew what it was about. I’m not going to be the one to spill the beans.
Anon
Wait I want to know what the song was about.
Jacket wise, I also thought it was one of those jacket/dress or jacket/skirt combos where the hemline is short and the jacket is almost as long as the skirt. Regrettably, that was my work uniform in 1998.
Anon
Ask G00gle what “Cake by the Ocean” means
Anonymous
That is the wrong song.
Anonymous
I think we’re talking about two entirely different songs and I’ve never felt older.
Anon
Oh I know what Cake by the Ocean is, and I was sort of horrified when my then preteen daughter was very into the song.
But Short Skirt Long Jacket is way older than that song. It’s a song by a group called Cake, which is where the confusion may come in. But I can tell you I was at the top of my sartorial game (or so I thought) when the song came out, and the jackets were long, but not longer than the skirt. And the skirts were quite short!
Anon
The song Elizabeth was referencing is Cake’s “Short Skirt Long Jacket.” I’m so confused.
Anon
Oh my gosh! I need to know and I don’t understand. Please spill the beans.
Anon
There are no beans. Only people who can’t keep one song straight from another.
Anon
Yes this!
Liza
+1000, the jacket in the song is longer than the skirt.
Anonymous
Nah. It is about an inch or two shorter. The reference is to the fashion of the day, and nothing in the song indicates otherwise. This is not a naked girl in a trench coat. This is actually an ideal woman who has her stuff together.
Anon
Agree
Anon
Thank you all for the encouragement for my / my daughter’s running questions last week. I am really excited for her and I think that the idea of making a team at a new school is really motivating for her. Even if it doesn’t happen, it is enough to start with.
Anon
Yay! Running is a great sport.
Cb
I asked a very trivial question a few weeks back about a flask that would keep my tea warm overnight when I’m in work city (at home, I have a very kindly husband). I found a camping thermos in the cupboard and last night, I filled it with boiling water, let it brew for a few minutes, and this morning, I had piping hot tea before leaving my bed. It is absurdly lazy, but it made my morning so much better.
So do the silly thing (buy the extra charger, etc) that makes your life a tiny bit easier.
Anon
I mean, I’ve never struggled to do things that make my life easier ;)
Anon
Ditto…
Anon
I have! I appreciate any advice for self care.
No Face
I do actually. Self care for the present instead of always planning for the future is a new thing I’m learning.
Curious
Extra chargers are the bomb.
Anon
With really long cords.
Anon
Love the long cords almost as much as I love a long jacket.
Senior Attorney
My version of this was to get a baby wipes warmer for my makeup remover towelettes. Now I don’t have to flinch when I take off my makeup before bed on a cold night!
Anon
I should do that for my dog. I use a special wipe for his nose fold and tail pocket (bulldog problems) before bed every night. The wipes have been cold lately!! And I’m in CA too.
NMHC
Is anyone going to the NMHC conference in Vegas in a few weeks? I think there was a clothing question related to it a few months back, so I thought it’d be fun to see if there’s a group of ‘rettes that will be in attendance!
questa
This is an easy question for the right person, but overwhelming to me.

second the “ask your lawyer” but may require registration in NY which could be prohibitive. If anyone else is currently working their or the NFP is set up to operate there, it’s much easier – it could be a heavy lift if not.

I would let then resign then hire them as a 1099 consultant (and treat them as such), unless you you want to have more than one employee in NY over time.
If this is how your workforce is evolving then maybe look into it.
And of course ask your lawyer or accountant on the tactical stuff.
Anon
I’ve worked remotely for nonprofits based in 2 other states before, 1 small, 1 large. It certainly isn’t an insurmountable task. +1 to ask your attorney!

What are things on resumes/cover letters that stand out to you in a good way? Conversely, what makes you roll your eyes?
Cb
I’m on an academic hiring panel this week, and honestly, the formatting is AWFUL! I shouldn’t have to guess whether you have an MA?
I feel bad for these people. When I finished my PhD and went on the job market, my PhD supervisor put me through the wringer making sure my materials were in tiptop shape, and I don’t think I realised that wasn’t the norm. Even now, when I applied for a closer-to-home job, she looked at my letter.
Anon
Good = not copied off the internet or generic, actually addresses the role and personalizes experience in a good way. Resumes that use plain language to explain what you did and are crisp and short. They should be hilight reels and not permanent files. They also should line up with LinkedIn.
Bad = none of these things
Anonymous
A well-written cover letter demonstrating that the writer knows what we do and how their skills will benefit the organization. We hire PhDs and the cover letters are shockingly bad.
Anonymous
Cover letter
Good: explains why they want this particular job and expresses so enthusiasm or interest about it
Bad: too long, too generic
Resume
Good: concise- when did you do it, what was it
Bad: weird formats, too much text, anything that makes it difficult for me to see very quickly what your education and experience is.
Anon
Formatting should be easy on the eye. Give me the info I need so I can review it for 1 minute and know whether you know what you’re talking about. I don’t want to read full sentences! Verb tense should also make sense. Former jobs should be in past tense and current in present tense. Grammar should be consistent. If you are putting a period at the end of the bullet points, put a period for all the bullet points! As far as cover letters, why are these still a thing?
Anon
Agree! As a hiring manager, I don’t read them because it’s enough of an effort for me to read a bunch of resumes!
Anon
“them” meaning cover letters.
Anonymous
I guess it depends on the job. I’m in fundraising and hire grant writers, so the cover letter is the most important part of the application for me. It’s persuasive writing. A good cover letter is also invaluable if you are not an obvious fit for a job from your resume (e.g. changing careers) or have potential red flags that can easily be explained (e.g. you want to relocate).
anon
I’m a legal recruiter and I see a lot of resumes. Good: white space to enhance readability, bar admissions are clear, dates of employment are clear, bullet points rather than paragraphs. Bad: colors, the general “about me” or “goals” section, 8 point font with .3 margins, too much detail about internships and clinics, and not enough about your current work.
Anon
Thoughts on 2-3 sentence summary section? A recruiter suggested it at one point and I don’t know if it’s worth the space. Currently in-house and looking. It’s essentially what I’d expect a recruiter’s elevator pitch about me (X number of experience with international law firms and companies, focusing on A, B, and C)
anon
My recommendation is to skip the summary section. Your resume should provide enough details that the reader understands what you do and doesn’t need a summary to explain it. Plus you’re right we include the elevator pitch with submissions, so it’s duplicative.
pugsnbourbon
I used to handle hiring for entry to mid-level roles. I think the worst thing was a full pink background on a resume. Second-worst was the seven-page resume for an entry-level role – someone gave her the WRONG advice. We hired for actors and singers and I had to learn a lot of terminology (“belter, legit” is an accepted descriptor).
Good resumes were short (1 to 1.5 pages), with “boring” formatting. We didn’t require cover letters, but the good ones I did get showed that the person had at least read the job description.
Anon
But was it pink and scented?
pugsnbourbon
No hahaha it was a PDF!
Anon
Cover letters should be used to explain things I won’t get from the resume. If you have an out of state address, the cover letter is where you explain that you’re moving for your spouse’s job. If you’ve always been in transactional legal field A, this is where you explain how your skills will apply to my job in field B. Otherwise, just keep it short and generic .
anon
Objectives or personal statements on a resume are worse than useless. I’m sure everyone considers themselves a motivated hard worker so your personal assessment is meaningless. And the objective can be addressed in a cover letter if it’s necessary at all. When I see these on a resume I assume the person is out of touch.
Most of the real estate should be dedicated to recent and relevant positions. Once you’re out of college you don’t need 3+ bullet points per internship.
I look for action verbs and evidence that you had an impact on your organization or clients.
Unless you’re applying for an executive role keep the resume one page.
Anon
Get to the point. Most people just skim. “I’m interested in x position.” should be just about the first thing you say. Go on to briefly describe your qualifications – briefly, the details are already in your resume or c.v. – and let the company know how to reach you.
Anon
Sorry this was advice for a cover letter, to be clear.
I also don’t think anyone in their first or second job should have a 2 page resume.
anon
Went to the doctor for a cold and while I was there she recommended I start taking a multivitamin. I’m drawn to the Ritual brand but would love to hear suggestions from other ‘rettes. What women’s multivitamin do you like? I’m 40+ years old. Thanks!
Anon
I like Puritan’s Pride women’s multivitamin. They also have an “over 50” version that is good for menopause.
Anon
Anything gummy and I’ll take it. Anything I have to swallow will languish in the bottle. I don’t think they do a thing though, total scam and an excuse for a little treat.
anti-influencer
I can’t trust anything from companies who hire social media influencers to sell me things. There is no reason to spend that much money on ritual vitamins. One-A-Days do the same thing without venture capital.
Anon
Eh, I’m friends with a lot of influencers so this doesn’t personally bother me.
Anon
I will happily buy clothes and home products from influencers, but they’re not medical professionals and if a brand is leaning in hard to the influencer marketing thing the way Ritual is it definitely gives me weird vibes.
Doodles
Yep. Gummies for me and the kids. It’s the only way I take them. I even take a separate vitamin D gummy. I buy both at Costco.
Cat
Ritual’s influencer marketing strategy annoys me. I get the drugstore generic version of One a Day.
Anon
Same! I’m inherently distrustful of anything medical shilled by influencers.
I take NatureMade for Women. My endocrinologist told me he recommends “name brands” like Johnson and Johnson and Centrum because apparently supplements aren’t well-regulated by the FDA and he trusts those companies not to use sketchy ingredients (although didn’t J&J have a big baby powder scandal? So I’m not sure how sound that logic is). Anyway I’d been on NatureMade at that point for years and it was working great and I didn’t feel like switching.
Anon
I’m agnostic as to brand but I only buy USP certified supplements. Otherwise I don’t have confidence that I’m getting what’s on the label given the lower level of regulation.
Tea/Coffee
I’m another “any gummy will do” and I’ve found that if the whole family takes the SAME gummy, we are more likely to remember bc one person (the kids, usually) will just go around handing out gummies to everyone :-) I go for the most general multivitamin which often is a generic Adult Multi thing. Tip: add in a probiotic gummy at the same time (same thing, we all take the SAME gummy). I swear the probiotics have done great things for our overall health as a family but YMMV.
By everyone taking 1 multi gummy and 1 probiotic gummy “most days” – yes, that’s often less than the recommended dose (which might be 2 gummies/day) but I am fine with that, because we eat a pretty healthy, varied diet and none of us have a clear particular deficiency or anything.
New Here
I just started taking a Nature’s Made gummy vitamin for women with added omega 3s. Tastes like sour patch kids!
In the past I’ve used Trader Joe’s multies, and Rainbow pre-natals.
Anon
I just use the women’s one a day in the orange bottle.
I had always thought vitamins were BS, but after using them off and on for years, I have two observations:
– when I take vitamins regularly I get sick less often
– my dietician encourages me to take them regularly
I generally eat healthily and stay active, but still prefer taking them
Anon
I like Thorne Basic Bs 2 a day because it doesn’t give me any nausea the way cheap multis do, and it doesn’t have MK7 which seems to make my heart race, but my doctor doesn’t like multivitamins that contain vitamin E because of studies on vitamin E supplementation being counterproductive.
So basically my doctor doesn’t like multivitamins and wants me on a B complex and then take any minerals or vitamin D separately as needed. When I tried it this way, I used the Seeking Health B complex… and then I never found a mineral complex that didn’t give me nausea, probably because I’m really sensitive to any form of zinc other than carnosine.
Lydia
I like the Target store brand (up & up), honestly… I’m taking the prenatal (although I am not pregnant or planning to be in the next 6 months, but just in case we start trying again after), but they also have a regular women’s vitamin. I used to take the gummies, but a lot of them don’t contain iron, and so I switched to these. I like them because they aren’t too big, have a coating (so no gross taste), and no gross aftertaste/fish oil burps/etc. My optometrist recommended vitamins for eye health, which is the main reason I’m taking them.
Anon
Do any of you science minded ladies want to get into the link between vitamins and cancer?
true enlightenment is here
**puts on tin foil bowler hat, tightens tin foil cravat**
Yes please, tell us everything.
Anon
I mean, I think that’s why the vitamin E is suspect, right?
Vitamins are pretty much required in my household (I have gastritis; partner has IBD), but there are definitely concerns about the pros/cons of taking them and arguments in favor and against specific options.
Nesprin
Ooh- cancer researcher here. The science is largely out- I’m not aware of any reliable data linking vitamin supplementation and cancer risk, and I just took another gander at the Cochrane reviews to confirm.
Calcium/vit D is proven good for bone density, sunscreen + avoiding nitrated meats are all solid recommendations, but by in large the things you can do to avoid cancer are don’t get old and pick your parents carefully.
anon_needs_a_break
thank you <3
It's all a trade off and a gamble. Even if there was some link b/t vitamins and cancer, I'd take it; on a daily basis without my B and D supplements I am tired, depressed, and have tingly extremities. No thanks.

Haha I was the one who asked the question and I do take vitamins! (D because my blood test is very low, a daily multivitamin, and some women’s health cranberry, pre and pro biotic gummies my doctor thought might help with recurrent UTIs.) So thanks for that. I feel better.
Unfortunately I did not choose my parents wisely and the getting old thing is well underway.

I used a metal foot file to remove calluses on my heels and I accidentally went too far…my heels are now red, raw, and feel like they are on fire. I’ve been using ointment but after a few days it still hasn’t helped and I’m terrified I’m going to get an infection. Has anyone dealt with this? Never using a cheese grater file again!
Anonymous
Go to the doctor!
Anon
Make an appointment with a doctor or go to an urgent care. Better safe than sorry. I can understand it hurting for 2 days but after 3 it should start healing.
Tea/Coffee
Ugh, I have used the callous scrapers like they have in salons and sliced off too much of my heel :-(
I would slather your heels with Polysporin (not neosporin) and put socks on before bed. Try that for a couple nights, it should help keep infection at bay and heal up all the little angries.
IF you happen to have (or want to buy a small tube) – lanolin is also great, like the purple tube b*feeding stuff. Polysporin on first, slather lanolin on top (like so much it doesn’t rub in), socks, bed.

I think I would treat it the same way as a burn or other skin injury. Keep it really clean, cover in vaseline or aquaphor, and cover it with a clean bandage/gauze wrap. You could add bacitracin into the mix once or twice a day if you are worried about being able to keep it clean/infection-free.
If it’s not improving or if it looks infected at all, definitely go to urgent care.
Hibiclens
If you’re worried about infection, wash twice a day with hibiclens.
Anon
Aquaphor and some heel socks. They sell these silicone lined sock-like things (usually the toe is open) to keep callous cream on your feet at night. I’d use them to keep the aquaphor in place.
I’ve done this before and it just took time.
Go to the doctor if they’re anything other than sore – red streaks, hot, oozing, etc.

Can anyone recommend a dentist in the Arlington, VA area? They all feel pretty much the same when reviewing online, so I figured I’d ask before just picking one.
Anon
Would you be ok with Old Town Alex? I LOVE Dr. Madani and I’m generally super skittish around dentists after some bad experiences. Everything is state of the art, she’s conservative in her treatment, and she has scented candles burning (the fall scent was so good!) and offers a heated lavender eye mask/shoulder wrap thing to relax you while you’re in the chair. The appointments are always quick and easy, you’re in and out quickly with the friendly front desk staff. And it doesn’t cost anymore than a regular dentist! https://www.alexdentalart.com/
Liza
I’d go with the one that has five stars on Yelp that is most convenient for location. Arlington is huge. Why drive 20 minutes to go to the dentist if you don’t have to?
Anon too
Our family uses Dr. Gentry at Caring Dentists in N Arlington. Not super fancy but they haven’t tried to upsell us on anything and have been easy to work with on all the paperwork/billing/scheduling.
Anon
Dr LaVecchia in Rosslyn. Have been going there for ten years, they are great!
Dentist
Dr. David Cote in Pentagon City! He’s very conservative with fillings and other treatments, which I appreciate. I’ve been able to (slooowly) resolve near-cavities that other dentists would’ve filled by stepping up my mouth care routine. And he and his staff are generally friendly and kind and they have appointments starting at 7:30 a.m., if that’s something you’re looking for to schedule around work.

Has anyone found back pain relief through a chiropractor? I wouldn’t let them do neck adjustments, but after getting totally blown off by both my primary and an orthopedic doctor, I’m willing to try a different route. I’m looking at RxWellness Spine & Health in Northern VA, which appears to combine chiropractic care with physical therapy and massage therapy.
Cb
I have. It helped but I never felt like it made a substantive, longer term difference. Rolfing made a huge difference though.
Anon
No, they are quacks and could permanently injure you. Go to a physical therapist.
Quack
I am also on team “chiropractors are witch doctors”. You really have to be careful with any medical professional working around your spine, chiro or physio or what have you.
anon
+1 The field is dangerous quackery and I’d stay away.
For a practical, non-quack solution, have you considered trying physical therapy or another MD?
Anon
Yes. They are amazing and I do it all, neck and back whatever is ailing me. Good ones will tell you when to go to a doctor and won’t overtreat. They’re fantastic for back pain and very unfairly derided here.
busybee
Not what you asked for but my husband found significant relief of back pain through acupuncture.
Anon
I would not go near a chiropractor with a ten foot pole. I would try physical therapy or go to a sports med doctor.
Also, if your primary is blowing you off, find a new doctor. That is unacceptable.
Anon
Husband needed spinal surgery after a chiro visit. He had an MRI before the chiro visit and after. Neurosurgeon said damage was caused by chiro. Avoid at all costs. They can do real damage. Get a referral for physical therapy!!!
Anon
I used to be a nurse in a trauma ICU. Took care of a patient that became a quadriplegic after a chiro adjusted his neck. We saw other chiro-related injuries, but that was the most memorable
Anon
I know two people who were seriously injured by chiropractor. Only one needed surgery, but they both had their quality of life permanently affected. It’s WILD to me that people take newborn babies to them. Like if they can injure a 6’3″ adult guy imagine what they can do to an 8 lb baby!!!
Seafinch
I have discussed the chiropractor view point frequently espoused here in real life because it’s so surprising to me. Chiropractors are super common and integrated into most countries health care systems. Almost everyone I know has seen a chiro in Canada. My quality of life has been substantially improved on multiple occasions; TMD, chronic rib pain in my shoulder blade, and in pregnancy, in addition to some preventative/regular adjustments to help with some underpowered glutes that act up when I am really going after my fitness routine. I have free, unlimited access to some great physiotherapy as well but it never does anything. Deep tissue/trigger release acupuncture has also been good but it treats the symptom mostly. I also find value in my Osteopathy maintenance visits.
Anon
Maybe chiropractor training is more regulated in Canada and other countries? In the US, they’re almost all quacks and a staggering number of them are anti-vax and Q Anon curious.
Seafinch
This is sort of what I assumed. There has to be some kind of licencing difference…or something! A lot of ours study in the U.S. so I don’t think it’s the schooling. I have seen a half dozen because we move with the military and they have all been extremely careful about the anti-vac stuff. It’s explicitly prohibited by their regulatory body to comment outside the spectrum of care.
Anon
I’m Canadian and they’re still quacks here.
Seafinch
I am sure I must know people who share your view but I couldn’t tell you who. I operate in a pretty traditional, conservative environment, i.e law, military (previously politics) and virtually every colleague of mine has a long standing relationship with a chiro, most of my friends take babies to chiros, my parents have gone etc. The Armed Forces have a notoriously narrow spectrum of care approved and we refer to chiros extensively. I have never had the “quack” reaction or heard a comment from anyone and think it’s really mainstream. There’s practically an office on every corner in my city so someone is going!
Quack
Same!
Anon
I know a lot of Canadians who think chiropractors are quacks. However the people I know are all MDs or PhD scientists, and I think that group tends to be inherently more distrustful of faux-medical people like chiropractors.
Seventh Sister
Out here in Southern CA, it’s pretty common for PCPs to refer people to chiropractors for certain kinds of physical pain. We have plenty of quacky chiropractors, but there are also a bunch that are fairly cautious and take insurance.
Anon
I’m also in CA and there are kickback loops between chiropractor clinics and medical clinics. This is my field. I’d be very careful about this.
As far as evidence based medicine, the PTs have it. I’d use a PT clinic associated with a hospital for the best PTs and the most responsible billing. And yes, they take insurance.
Anon
I’ve had really mixed experiences with PTs. Some of them are truly fabulous though.
Anon
PTs are like any other doctor. There are good ones and bad ones. The field as a whole is much more legitimate and evidence-based than chiropractics though.
Anonymous
Never ever let a chiropractor touch your neck. They can do real damage.
j
My husband has been going to a chiropractor/physical therapist affiliated with GW downtown and it’s been helping a lot. The guy is a physician (too?) and is able to do imaging and other stuff there, too. He’s also a lot less creepy than the last guy he saw who talked a lot about “the chiropractic lifestyle…”
Anone
I would highly recommend yoga. It’s helped my back pain tremendously. Also PT for acute pain and an orthopedist if you think you might need surgery, but I recommend yoga for chronic back pain. I’ve seen a chiropractor a couple times and though I wasn’t injured, thankfully, my back pain came back the next day, every time.

Does anyone only shape or maintain their eyebrows with tinkle razors? Any tips? Am trying for the first time this weekend, would love to be able to stop waxing them!
New Here
I sometimes clean up the under part (the fatty part of my brow? Not sure what it is called) with them between waxes to stretch out the time.
I once tried to shape them up more than that, my hand slipped, and I had a big chunk out of the top of one brow…so, proceed with caution.
Anon
I do space a bit far away from key shaping that way but I do the tweeze a couple of hairs every day method to maintain shaping. It works great for me. The key is to actually do it every day as part of your night routine and then you really never have to tweeze more than a couple a day. I started during the pandemic but honestly it’s cleaner looking, cheaper, and easier than waxing ever was.
Senior Attorney
I do but I have super sparse brows so YMMV.
Anon
I do, but I mostly just shave the space between them so I don’t have a unibrow.

I have a 5 year old pomeranian that seems understimulated but I can’t get him to play with toys (although he does get mad when a toy he wasn’t interested in is snatched up by his brother…) There’s 1 puzzle that he enjoys, but how do I get him to play with a broadre range of toys or generally get him the stimulation he needs. long walks aren’t enough and he’s afraid of other dogs so don’t want to take him to the dog park.
Anon
Some dogs just don’t like toys. I wouldn’t worry about it.
pugsnbourbon
My brother and SIL’s dog is like this! He’s like, if it’s not food why would I bother with it? But he is also an old man in dog form.
For your pom – I would get a variety of treat-dispensing toys. We have one that’s flying-saucer shaped that’s a longtime favorite. There are a ton of options out there.
Panda Bear
+1 My last dog had zero interest in toys, but we put her kibble in the Kong Wobbler every day. Kept her super busy and was adorable to watch.
Anon
Trick training is perfect for dogs like him! I would enroll in a class if you’ve never done any training. Since he’s afraid (or reactive?) with other dogs, talk to the instructors before signing up to learn what their practices are around keeping space between handler/dog combos and keeping the mood pretty chill, as well as their general training philosophy.
Anonymous
Yup my dog loves trick training. I did an online class actually through School for the Dogs – highly recommend!
Anon
What makes you think he’s understimulated? My dogs sleep all day or “watch tv” (look out the windows).
Is your pom perhaps a chewer? Would he enjoy a nylon bone? My 7 year old hound doesn’t play with toys – and didn’t even when he was a puppy – but every now and again he’ll grab a chicken-flavored nylon bone to gnaw on.
Squeak
What’s his treat motivation level? If my dog has a lot of beans and I don’t have the corresponding energy to do a lot of tug (his favourite), we play “search”, where I toss or hide treats around the house and make him find them. The sniffing exhausts his brain and is great stimulation.
Another one, if he likes puzzles, is to use some old towels or kitchen rags and knot treats up into them for him to unravel. You can adjust the tightness level based on his skills.
Finally, I like hiding treats in old cardboard boxes with some random recycling and making my dog sniff them out!
Anon
I have had dogs that think everything is a toy, dogs that like toys, and one dog that did not understand the concept if a toy. Different wiring and early life experiences—there’s a continuum of interest.
anon
OP here, thanks folks! He has a few behavioral issues we are trying to work through, and he seems perpetually wound up. Some of this I think is anxiety about a variety of things, but I also just get the impression he wants more things to do, and he’s very easily excitable more than any pom his age I’ve known (and I’ve had poms my whole life). we are having a trainer come this week and help us get to the root of the behavioral stuff but I also want to make sure I’m doing my part trying things.

I’m wfh today and have been trying since 7 am to get on the exercise bike – have had my padded shorts on and everything. Woke up to a flurry of emergency emails that I had to deal with before I even had coffee. I’m finally wrapping up and have an hour window to work out and shower, and I hear DH, who is not working, who has no appointments today, who knows I’m trying to get on the bike, who has seen me running around in padded shorts all morning, get on the bike. Queue my frantic demand for how long he’s going to be on omg I finally made an hour whydidn’tyoucheckwithmefirst and he’s run away. My friends laughed when I said I was considering buying a second bike but it really might be worthwhile. Happy Wednesday!
Anon
Charter member of Team Make Your Life Easy here and I’d 100 get a second bike if you have room for it. My husband and I don’t share a bathroom or closets and it’s key to marital bliss. I’d add this to the category. Plus no adjusting and it’s always yours.
Anon
You are living my fantasy life with the separate bathrooms.
I’m unfortunately an old house afficionado and I’m fortunate to even have a separate bathroom from the kids!
Liza
I think this is a vent and not actually asking for opinions on whether you need a second bike? But just in case, it doesn’t sound like you do, if you told your spouse you were wanting to get on at that time, and he got off and let you use it?
OP
Ha yes we’ve really been tripping over each other since he’s been out of work! We’re weirdly in sync sometimes, like the other day we both suggested ice skating for date night, we haven’t ice skated for like 20 years. Apparently we’re also in sync with being in the exact same spot in our house at the same time. I feel like I’m in a cartoon where I’m chasing my husband around the house and somehow he pops out of rooms unexpectedly. If I’m making coffee and packing my lunch in the morning, he needs to be in the kitchen taking up all the counter space making bread. If I’m in the closet getting dressed, it’s the perfect time for him to install new hooks. If I need to run to my office to take a call, he’s blocking the door because he’s trying to Tetris more stuff into the closet. We have a 3k sq ft house that he has mostly to himself all day. There is no reason we should be tripping over each other so much!
We’ll laugh about this someday, right?
Anon
I’m WFH and my husband is recently retired. You are describing my life.
We have a smallish kitchen, and any time I run in there to make tea, which involves me using 3/4 of the kitchen (location of water, location of tea cup, location of tea kettle) – no matter what counter I need at the moment, my husband is leaning on that exact counter telling me about some article he read online.
Vicky Austin
Haha, we have a very clingy dog and my husband and I often get home from work at the same time and both head to our (shared) closet to change, dog in tow. And every time, husband gets cranky and says, “We have a whole house! Why are we all standing here in this closet?”
I’ve accepted it as part of his post-work blowing off steam at this point, and I just laugh and herd the dog out.
Anon
I would be so furious!

My husband does this with the treadmill! I feel you!
