Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
This gorgeous deep raspberry color is one of my favorites for winter. To be fair, I love jewel tones all year-round (those are my colors, after all), but the shade of this Simkhai pintuck shirtdress would be a lovely bright spot among all the wintry blacks and grays I’m seeing right now.
Wear this with boots and a sweater blazer for a gorgeous business casual look.
The dress is $475 at Neiman Marcus and comes in sizes XS-XL.
Two more affordable options are from Sam Edelman ($108 at Nordstrom) and Chaus ($89 at Nordstrom).

I hate when websites don’t give you precise fabric content and instead give you just “cotton/polly”. Very cute dress but I’d be afraid the fabric was weird and would want to see how the inside of the pintucks are finished.
Looking for workout leggings and/or pants that do not have a front center seam. My sister calls this no splitting in half (yep). Caveat also must be squat proof and machine washable. Prefer black and or printed. My fabletics pair just changed fabric and I need a new one. Online it can be hard to zoom or confirm especially if black. Budget ~$90/pair, cheaper great, but so many fail the squat proof test!
Are you against a gusset? Just from a 3D sewing structural perspective, having a centre seam is usually pretty important and can really only be mitigated with a gusset, but that’s very uncommon. The leggings that are made of all one piece are not good quality fabrication.
I’m trying to figure out what this is … can you link something? Sorry, I searched and it is maybe a diamond but I can’t see the inside / underside on Lulu or athletica to get it!
Yes gussets are diamonds sewn in the crotch to basically make the area 3D and allow room for movement.
Maybe this isn’t your situation but based on your sister’s comment, if the seam is splitting you in half that would be a good indication you need to size up.
For some reason no matter what underwear I have on, when I’m in yoga class it seems that leggings go straight up there. Even if I size up. Running is not as bad, but the side pockets feel loose when I size up.
I never wear underwear with leggings (former rower). That might help
I know from experience exactly what OP is talking about, and it’s not an underwear issue.
OP are you high waisted? Try long/high rise leggings. But also, I think a gusset is a good idea.
Thicker leggings (think the original lululemon fabric, not necessarily brushed winter tights) tend to work better for me than the newer, thinner “softer” fabrics some companies are making. Also, joggers tend to work better for this issue.
Girlfriend Collective Luxe Collection doesn’t have a front seam — I don’t have that particular version, but I’ve found Girlfriend Collective to be good quality (plus they’re recycled).
And your sister’s comment made me laugh this morning!
Popflex leggings don’t have that seam and I really like them. i didn’t try the target version, so can’t vouch for those.
This is my recommendation! I have the Target ones (Blogilates limited collection) and it is impressive. My next leggings will be the Popflex ones.
Try searching for seamless leggings. If there is a seam, it would usually be down the centre; that enables the manufacturer to sew two identical legs together.
I have never really understood executive orders. If an executive order changes a position, do existing regulations get deleted automatically? I’m just starting to appreciate how many federal employees are considered executive branch. I have a lot to learn!
I work for a large federal agency and many of my coworkers were unaware that we are part of the executive branch. Yes, these folks enthusiastically voted for the incoming administration and think only other people’s jobs and telework are at risk.
The vast, vast majority of us are executive branch. Pretty much if your department reports up to the president (whether cabinet level or not), you’re in the executive branch. It’s just the folks who work directly for congress/ the Supreme Court (but staffers are different – they work for their elected official. But, the admin side of working for congress)
Existing policy is superseded, effective for the effective date given in the order.
As I understand it, an executive order has the force of law and is designed to provide executive branch departments and agencies with specific instructions to implement a law or, if no legislation is the basis for the instructions, the to implement the president’s Constitutional authority. Executive orders are subject to judicial review. Also, yes, a president can overturn a predecessor’s executive order (by issuing a new one with new instructions).
I started using some K-beauty products, including Laneige. I just found out only part of their product line is sold in the US. Is there any way to see the full product line? I may try to have a friend bring me a few items back from their trip later this year. I can’t figure out how to swap the website from US – or if that would even work!
Does the river site sell the rest of it? Aren’t there special K beauty websites?
Last time I tried K beauty from the river site I got a counterfeit even though the brand has an official store there
LOL that is the worst type of thing to order from Amazon. You’re definitely gonna get fakes.
This is the international site https://www.laneige.com/int/en/index.html I have bought from Olive Young.
I’ve bought KBeauty from masksheets.com and stylevana. Masksheets is in the US, and stylevana ships internationally.
I avoid buying KBeauty from amazon entirely.
A now ex-friend and of mine is running for political office and I’m having all the feels about it. His website has a lot of abhorrent views, I’m cycling between hoping he wins and his party eats him alive and hoping someone exposes his past and he loses (not sure how my ex-friend passed the party background check). Idk venting into the void I guess. I’m also very concerned about his poor kid, not that he does any real parenting in his two weekends a month but kids are cruel.
Assuming you are in the US, there is no background check. Anyone can run. I’ve been through this multiple times with acquaintances, and its a lot of complicated emotions. My basic rules for myself are I will not contribute to your campaign or attend any fundraisers. In a liberal way, I essentially treat their running with an (R) next to their name as a “hate the sin, love the sinner” type of southern detachment.
What do you mean, “party background check”? Most people can run for office without party support; they just don’t win.
Ex-friend is running for a major party and is likely to win, not American though and our parties do have background checks.
Ugh commiseration. I was in a similar situation, and ex friend and other mutual friends *did* reach out for support. I was criticized for “not being loyal”, even though I let our friendship fade away due to problematic behavior and questionable substance use by said person. I just wished them well and stayed out of it.
Ugg. That sounds hard and tricky. I was in a similar situation, and he got less than 200 votes (he wasn’t the total rock bottom candidate, but he was second to last in the election results). It was for the best I think. I do think if he won he could have damaged (even more) lives.
A few commenters have talked about wanting to be more organized. The phrase a place for everything and everything in its place was not a realistic starting for me – I “look” like I have my life together, because my work life is: my office is spotless, my work email is very close to inbox zero. But my personal / home organization has always been a disaster. I have been reading Dana K White, slob comes clean. When I say life changing, I mean it. I am focusing on decluttering. I am one month in. I have thrown away ten huge trash bags using her advice. Starting in visible areas. My entry way, kitchen table, and counters make me feel so light. Mari kondo, cute storage has never worked for me – we are all different! I am down to 25 boxes of misc stuff in the house and plan to get through it by end of Q1. As a bonus, I am starting to incorporate her tips on cleaning and dishes and laundry. My reward at end of Q1 is cute and functional storage for what I did keep. Goal by end of Q2 to implement her daily cleaning suggestions on a consistent basis. I just want anyone who struggles with this to remember not every system works for all of us. Learning styles vary. Turns out for my “stuff,” I needed Dana’s blunt photos and examples to understand how to declutter. Maybe she’s not for you. But if you feel like you’ve tried everything else, consider Organizing for the Rest of Us. And remember like weight loss, you didn’t accumulate the stuff in a week and its unlikely to all get out of your house in a week.
Ooh that’s really useful. My husband went to my son’s school to find something that had gotten lost and his teacher said “He’s brilliant – tells me all about Greek architecture… but his stuff is scattered all across the classroom and he somehow is always missing a shoe?” And my husband says “Gets it from his mum!” My spaces are pretty tidy, but if I leave my house with everything I need for the day and then come home with everything, it’s a miracle. So I need to do some reading on routines to help us both.
Dana would say that she hated having people chant at her: “a place for everything and everything in its place” because she had no idea how to figure out a place for things and then keep them there. She would simply set something down wherever, and not even realize she’d done so. So she came up with a system that worked for her scattered brain.
Good ole ADHD.
That makes total sense. I think my issue is that no day looks the same (and often I’ve got 1+ overnight away a week). I was a bit better when I travelled to the same location 1x a week b/c I just had quadruples (home, backpack, work city rental, office). I mean, I bought my share of airport headphones but it seems to have gotten worse now that my schedule is more changeable. Plus I have to feed / water myself.
I have scattered schedule commitments like this and I find that having a very small “everyday carry” bag that goes with me no matter what ensures I’ve at least got spare key, earbuds, medication extras, a pen, and a charger.
I use the smallest Muji bag which fits in a pocket, purse, backpack, bike bag – wherever

+1 Dana’s system genuinely works.
It also works extremely well in high-stress, emotionally difficult situations, like if you have to help parents move or in grieving situations.
Thanks! This sounds useful for me. I have been decluttering over the course of the last year and I would love to hear from someone whose brain works like mine. I just downloaded her audiobooks off of Libby.
I have recently started noticing vertical forehead lines. Someone said those are WTF lines. I’m early 40s. Is there anything that can help? I’m not too keen to have needles in my face.
Sunglasses
I actually wear sunglasses even during cloud days as I have sensitive eyes.
Botox.
Bangs. Otherwise it’s needles.
Frownies. They are patches that you can put on the problem area and it releases some kind of serum topically to reduce the lines. My hairdresser swears by them.
Thoughts on the Lo and Sons Aoyama bag?
I’m late 40s, NY suburbs, petite, don’t want to be totally dated looking.
I haven’t bought a bag from them in a decade but they just look cheap and unfashionable to my eye. Gave whatever one I had away ages ago and wouldn’t buy anything new.
I think it’s cute. Simple. Nice leather.
I have had the Pearl for almost a decade and it looks brand new, despite heavy use. I bought it as a travel purse for Europe but I find myself using it all the time because the organization is just so good (although I did buy a wider strap for travel because the hardware was hitting my collar bone in an uncomfortable place). So I have a certain trust in the brand.
That said, the Aoyama looks unstructured to my eye, without having any fashionable edge to make up for it. I know slouchy bags are having a moment but there is something about the proportions and material that look off to me. But then I really do prefer a more structured bag.
Any recommendations for inexpensive packing cubes? The ones sold by the brand name luggage companies seem to be $10-$20 a piece. I was hoping to spend max $50 to get at least a dozen medium to large cubes.
I just bought whatever looked good on a m a z o n and called it good – they are cheap and you can get like 3 sets for $50.
These are the ones I got and they work well

Same. Give some thought to your suitcase dimensions when picking. By sheer dumb luck the medium size of my Amazon pick was exactly half the size of the interior of my carryon, which makes that size my MVP.
I’ve had great luck for packing cubes at TJ maxx style stores- packing cubes are weirdly expensive sometimes and there’s not much of a difference in quality.
TJ Maxx always have cheap ones!
I’m not sure what the price is these days, but I’ve been using the same Eagle Creek set for over a decade. I added a couple of Thule compression bags two years ago and am happy with those as well.
Craving a pot roast in this cold weather. I’d like to make it in the crockpot, but I HATE how mushy the vegetables get when I cook everything all together like that. Any suggestions/go-to recipes?
I have so much better luck with making it in a large dutch oven (than a crock pot). Less time to get mushy. Normally do 300-325 for 3 hours and its works out about right. Also a fan of doing a roast chicken in the dutch oven with onions on the very bottom, then potatoes and carrots then the chicken on the very top.
+1 – everything is better in a Dutch oven, crockpots leach all the flavor out
I agree with New Here – my idea pot roast is in my cast iron Dutch Oven for a few hours over the weekend. If I need to use my crockpot, I take the time to sear my meat and onions before tossing in the crockpot. I like fresh rosemary, thyme, and garlic as well. I never cook potatoes in the pot roast. If I have time, I roast separately or serve with egg noodles instead.
I don’t cook with recipes so no links here.
Oh wait – New Here is the OP. Everything else still stands though!
I don’t eat the vegetables that I cook with the roast. They are for flavoring the braising liquid. To not let all of them go to waste, sometimes I’ll blend them into the braising liquid and then reduce it to make a sauce. My dog adores “carrot bones”, though, so she is usually the grateful recipient.
I make vegetables for the meal separately.
I lean into it with a lot of potatoes under the roast, fat drips into the taters, mash ‘em up for a treat.
Or put a rack or aluminum foil balls under the roast (probably a rack). Put a layer of foil on top of the roast, poke some holes for the steam to get through, and put the potatoes on top so they’re more steamed in the slow cooker than drenched.
Have you seen Stephanie O’Dea’s slow cooker blog? She even layers green beans on top of potatoes.
The gravy at the bottom would still be good for the taters, tho!
You should add the vegetables near the end. They don’t need to cook nearly as long as the meat.
This. I had no idea that people cooked carrots and potatoes for the whole time. I do sweat onions and add those with the browned beef.
Mississippi pot roast recipe, using one half the seasoning unless you really like salty, and cook your sides separately. I like it with smashed new potatoes.
Put the vegetables in for the last hour.
I think garlic, onion, and celery (and a tablespoon of tomato paste) are needed for the full cook, but chunks of carrots and potatoes should not be in the whole time. Peas you add straight from frozen right before you serve it.
I’ve been making this one for 10 years now. Always delicious. Your post has inspired us to have it for dinner tomorrow!
3 lbs beef chuck roast
½ tsp pepper
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 cup warm water
1 tbsp beef base
½ lb sliced fresh mushrooms
1 large onion, coarsely chopped
3 garlic cloves
¼ cup butter, cubed
1/3 cup flour
¼ tsp salt
Sprinkle roast with pepper and Worcestershire sauce. Add beef base to warm water and pour over roast. Add vegetables. Cook on low 6-8 hours or until meat is tender. Remove roast and vegetables.
In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and salt until smooth. Gradually whisk in cooking juices. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, and cook for 1-2 minutes.
Just screaming into the void.
I found out this morning that I didn’t get a job I wanted. The interviewer didn’t really have any feedback, other than we’re only hiring one person instead of two, and we got a really good crop of applicants this time around.
I’m sorry, that sucks.
If it makes you feel better, I didn’t get a ‘dream job’ and it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to my career and life.
Comiseration. I just saw that I job I was in the running for 2 years ago was reposted today. They said my application was great but I was lacking experience on topic B. They are looking for someone with experience of both A and B, and they still haven’t filled the position, because the Venn diagram of people with A and B experience is tiny and those people are extremely well compensated. I have since moved on to a grear job so I don’t care, I just think it’s funny Linkedin suggested this as a great fit for me this morning.
Looking for some advice on how to navigate these next four years. Hopefully folks in this country comes to their senses after that. I am trying not to watch the news too much, but I still feel the need to be aware of what is happening. I am deeply concerned that we will gut our expertise in various administrations to install loyalists who know nothing about how to keep our country healthy and strong. That we will go after anyone insufficiently loyal. What if there is another natural disaster in a blue state? It fees Orwellian. Any thoughts on how to cope?
Today, I am letting myself view it like the whole thing is a circus act or a gossip rag tale.
I plan to cut way back on my mindless scrolling and media consumption, and try make sure I understand the agenda behind news sources. I also plan to do more off-screen stuff like reading books, participating in my hobbies, home improvement, exercise, and community involvement.
I’m averting my eyes from the news as much as possible. Team Ostrich here. I can’t change any outcomes by worrying about it.
I’m just looking at the news and wanting to scream THAT’S NOT POSSIBLE BY EXEC ORDER which is probably not helpful
Feel your feelings, then quietly do whatever you can to resist what’s most likely coming down the pike. Build your savings/cut expenses so that if you’re forced to take a stand at work or in a way that it could affect your employment, retaliation isn’t financially ruinous.
Continue to be fabulous and resilient no matter what. Don’t give the MAGA cult the satisfaction of “owning the libs”. They’re not worth it and you are fabulous. Keep your head up and keep moving forward.
Haven’t we been saying this since early November? How did you make it this far?
This is all really sage advice. I’m avoiding immersing myself in news of what is awful, but I can’t do anything about, so that I stay strong to do what I can do to help (kindness to others, give to charities, support Dems in the midterms).
It helps no one if I’m extra miserable and too sad to do what is within my power.
I woke up this morning and someone had destroyed the BLM sign on my lawn. Literally mangled the metal sign holder into an abstract sculpture and broke the sign in half and left it in my bushes. My next door neighbors (who are black) woke me to tell me, and caught the whole thing on video. It was one of our near neighbors….
The dogs have been unleashed.
Keep supporting your local and national respected news sources. Continue to talk with your family, neighbors and colleagues. Call/write to your local congresspeople as issues arise. Volunteer with League of Women’s Voters.
Wow, that really really sucks. Sending hugs & solidarity.
You should leave a “nice” note in their mailbox. Remind them if they have kids you know where they go to school. Sorry, not sorry, my guns are out. Time to meet threats with threats.
Have you considered using the videos to take to police to charge the bad neighbor with vandalism, malicious destruction of property, a hate crime, everything that fits?
+1. Even if it leads to nothing more than a talking to, report this.
I would think a lot about what I know about the local police first.
I did call the Police, and am waiting for someone to call me back to file a report. It was the 2nd vandalization of my sign in the last 2 weeks.
I’ve repaired the sign, gotten a new holder and superglued/taped everything together and will get it back out there tomorrow.
Go local and small. Read your local news and support your local new organizations. Make your community better/focus on your school boards, your library boards, etc. And really focus on what your state is doing, particularly at the state house levels. Call and write about bills you support or denounce, and if you have local access to your rep (eg, a local office or events), actually go to those and find out what’s happening at the smaller — but no less vital — level. Engage there.
I’m taking care of myself. And finding tax loopholes.
Got stuck in mod for some reason, and it might be too late for anyone to read, anyway. But just in case!
Put some of your frustration and energy into state-level politics. Pay attention to the bills being developed in your state house and make calls about those. Your voice has a bigger impact at the state level, and states are both the canary in the coal mine and an important bulwark against a wide range of bs over the next 4 years.
Focus on TWO years, not four. MAGA isn’t going to vote in the midterms (the ruling party’s voters are always less motivated to vote in the midterms). Republicans have the House by a measly five votes — the Dems will hopefully take back the House (if not the Senate too!) in two years. Between now and then, state attorneys general will sue whenever a law or the constitution is broken by Trump.
Over the weekend I decided I would cope with the incoming administration by (a) giving up most of my news consumption and (b) getting my sourdough starter out of the back of the refrigerator and reviving it. The sourdough is nice and bubbly and we had amazing sourdough waffles for breakfast this morning, and a sourdough focaccia ready to go in the oven for dinner. Do any of you have any other fairly easy sourdough recipes or tips and tricks you’d like to share?
I am also rage baking.
I use my discard in pancakes and pizza crust.
Hugs to you and yours’, SA.
Aw, thanks! Hugs back. Pizza is on the menu for tomorrow!!
If I had a working sourdough starter ready, I’d make a rustic sprouted buckwheat and oat loaf, or some pizza dough.
That sprouted loaf sounds amazing, do you have a recipe link you could share?
I use a modification of a method in a non-English recipe, but basically any no-knead, slow rise, cast iron Dutch oven loaf recipe would be similar, I think.
King Arthur has some recipes for sourdough rolls (with starter or discard), and general instructions about subbing starter/discard into bread recipes in general
King Arthur has recipes for sourdough rolls using starter or discard, and they have general guidelines about how to sub starter or discard into any bread recipe. I’ve made the rolls with discard, and they were pretty good.
The King Arthur sourdough discard biscuits are so good that I keep a starter going just so I can make them.
I’m going to Tucson in March for a family trip and want to do some work clothes shopping while there (I live in a city with terrible options for professional clothing). I see there’s a J Crew and an Ann Taylor, any other recommendations for places to check out??
Late to post so may repost in the morning:
I’m trying to remove use of plastics in my kitchen, and would like to buy a few wooden cutting boards. For meats, I’d likely want glass or use maybe one plastic board – just trying to overall put less plastic in our food.
Do you have recommendations for quality wooden cutting boards? Looking for either a source to purchase, or some tips for buying them (what wood, treated how, …).
Epicurean cutting boards are wood/paper products and can go in dishwasher after meat.
For actual wood, maple or teak are good. You need a hard wood.
I recently read that bamboo is good for meat because it doesn’t absorb moisture.https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/food-safety-basics/cutting-boards#:~:text=Bamboo%20absorbs%20very%20little%20moisture,oil%20to%20help%20retain%20moisture.
The absolute best cutting board for knives are the butcher block kind, where it’s the ends of the wood that stick up, so the knife can slide right in. I don’t want to spend that kind of money and I’m short so I don’t like how much height they add to my counter. So I just have a small wood cutting board and a large Epicurean one that goes in the dishwasher.
I wouldn’t bother with the plastic or glass; plastic is actually worse for bacteria than wood, and glass is a terrible cutting surface.
I’m supposed to be oiling my wood cutting board but haven’t ever done it; I guess I should.
I’ve gotten them at places like TJmax, aldi, Ollie’s outlet, and grocery stores. I think I try to spend less than $10 per board.
These were the results of a test I found:
Pine and oak have had good results in tests – better than plastic in terms of getting rid of bacteria from raw meat. Most important thing: use a dry board when cutting, moisture helps the bacteria, a dry board is lot more hygeinic. Home cooks should have different boards for vegetables, meat and bread.
Hand-washing and quick drying is the best way to clean all boards, so whether the board will fit easily in your sink is an important factor. Don’t get a massive butcher’s block you can’t easily clean.
A glass board would destroy your knives.
I like the cheap bamboo ones from my local grocery store. I bought a set of three about 10 years ago and they are still in great shape. Once a year I re-oil them with mineral oil, and every 4 years I sand them down.
We did have one casualty when my husband put one of the set in the dishwasher when we first bought them. It totally deconstructed itself and had to be thrown away. Don’t do that.
I don’t worry about using them for meat, just handwash well after use, but do try to keep pungent things like onions and garlic to the larger board. Otherwise the flavor hangs around for a bit and it turns out that garlic-flavored sliced apples are really weird.
Nooo, don’t get glass. That will ruin your knives. Just use wood and wash them well.
Back to the office for all you government workers. Its about time.
Go step on a Lego.
KAT
Oh, come on. No need to rat her out. We’re all touchy today.
You’re most likely a troll so this comment isn’t worth getting agitated over, but I’ll post some facts on here for other readers who may be not as familiar with federal government workers or EOs and are curious about this issue. I’m a fed and have spent parts of my career actually interpreting EOs. About 55 percent of federal workers have always worked in-person full time because of the nature of their jobs. Those who are TW-eligible spend at least 60 percent of their time in office already. The vast majority of federal workers, close to 80%, work outside of the DMV area. The TW issue, like most other things with this administration, is a political tool more to demonize than really be fact based.
Also, the EO that Trump signed has a ton of potential carve outs, like collective bargaining agreements (which is a big one), non-executive agencies, and then just straight up leaves it to heads to make whatever exemptions they see fit.
A lot of Trump supporters may see this as a win against government workers, who for whatever reason they see as an enemy, but like most things politics, is a lot of smoke and mirror.
Ahhhhh…….snowflake elegy rising.
