Reno Nightmare
We did a huge reno of a master suite 2.5 years ago. The GC was sourced through referrals and we thought otherwise tight. Permits were pulled, everything was seamless.
Today? Grout is crumbling from between floor tiles. Our shower had a monster leak this morning through our kitchen. Plumber and insurance adjuster this morning concluded it’s not a plumbing issue but poor water sealing in the walls and in the seam of the tiles where the wall turns 90 degrees (as in, no sealing at all). They think it was a building problem between the walls/ceiling/floor for a while and today it just decided to bust. There’s more but it basically it all points back to the construction work.
Is this just an “it is what it is / you live and you learn” kind of thing or do we have any standing to go back to GC and be like WTF, fix it? I was just going to accept it and move along, find someone new to help us repair/remediate but a friend suggested we may be within our right to go back to GC and ask for remediation of some kind.
Anon
I’d start by going back to the GC, I’ve had minor issues before and they’ve always fixed them.
Anonymous
I think each state has its own statute of limitations — maybe this 50-state survey would be a helpful starting point?
https://www.sdvlaw.com/docs/news.27.pdf
Anonymous
(And to be clear you should definitely ask the GC nicely — but whether or not you’re within your statute of limitations where you could still sue him will probably inform their response.)
Senior Attorney
Well the answer to any question you don’t ask is always “no,” so I’d absolutely approach the GC. And for what it’s worth, I’ve had decent luck with that kind of thing in the past.
Anon
I’d alert GC and ask them to put their liability carrier on notice.
That mom
Well and social media, right? Like how many neighborhood groups on FB have a thread for “local recommendations” or you can easily search “contractor” and now… well, OP knows many ways to leave a review online
Not sure if that’s a threat but also just the way we live right now
Anonymous
When you pull permits, there is (in my state) an inspection. Did you have one? I’d talk to the inspector as well if you did.
We had like 2 different visits during construction because the inspector wouldn’t sign off on the way the drywall was done- I didn’t even realize it was part of the inspection.
Cerulean
That really sucks! Tiles should be caulked (not grouted) at a change of plane, although of course the grout shouldn’t be crumbling, either. Is there any caulk? If not, that’s a pretty glaring error and I’d be worried about other issues with their work.
Anon
I wanted to make a fine point on the hotel / international travel thread. If you look at a US brand like Marriott, they have a few Marriott-owned Marriott-flagged hotels. Most of them are Marriott-branded but they aren’t owned by Marriott. And Marriott is a publicly-traded company — it’s revenue may be global and its ultimate ownership is . . . who knows? It likely has a large global ownership contingent, not to mention local owners abroad and local employees.
I think it’s like how you can have a US stock fund and an international stock fund and they may own a big overlapping bucket of stocks. And if you own an all-China fund that says it owns separate companies, the largest shareholder in those companies may be the Chinese government, so how diversified is it really? And how good are its financials?
My bigger point is that labels are often arbitrary and may not be what they seem if you scratch beneath the surface a little bit. In my city, a lot of chain hotel owner/operators are . . . recent immigrants.
Anon
They also have rewards programs that reward brand loyalty, so if we use them all the time in one setting we may have points to spend in another setting.
Anon
I’m not actually following your point? So what?
Senior Attorney
I think the point is that even though an American may stay in a Marriott-branded (for example) hotel abroad, that doesn’t mean they aren’t having an authentic experience in the host country.
Anon
The Park Hyatt on Place Vendôme is my forever favorite Paris hotel. It’s in an historic Parisian building. The staff are French. The restaurant is French. I didn’t feel like it was “eating McDonalds” in Paris. C’est ridicule.
It actually makes me wonder whether the person who wrote that is actually well traveled.
Anonymous
Or if you are able to understand a basic idea.
Anon
I had some bad experiences renting small (mostly in the US) and what I now like on a vacation is being able to be swapped around in rooms (like if the heat is out or there is a flood from a room above) vs having to cancel and go home in the high season b/c there are no rooms. I also like a lodging provider with a reputation to lose if there are any issues with security (like working locks on doors, no deadbolt, etc., which I’ve also had). I guess I’ve travelled enough as a single woman to err on the side of the known provider in a new-to-me area. That said, I’ve been at local places (likely X University Club and reciprocal places) through a former job’s corporate membership and loved the delightful local flavor (granted, local flavor for the top %ile) for those trips. It’s just hard to know much about some places or be forced to stay in some places when not doing personal travel. The really sketchy stuff anywhere was very small-operator, which makes me sad for small operators who run a clean ship.

Ways to ‘level up’ in life? I am feeling bleh and not particularly inspired, and want to start acting like a dream version of myself.
Some thoughts I have:
-Get a revamped, elegant capsule wardrobe to feel like a boss
-Start speaking confidently and be intentional about presentation
-Re-join a gym or start really investing in fitness
-Try to glow up a bit – haircut, brows, skincare, fitness and health
-Get involved in the community more
Would love other suggestions.
Anon
Pick something to learn — a new language, a new sport, a new game. That will reignite a spark that will help lead to other “level up” stuff.
Anonymous
+1 million.
Anon
Start thinking strategically about your time. What enriches you or contributes to a longer term goal vs. what is a time/energy suck with little ROI?
Anonymous
New hobby, learning new language, fitness class that’s a bit outside your comfort zone (like learning snowboarding)…
you can also go back to something you loved as a child that maybe you haven’t done in a long while because you’ve been focusing on career/resume
anon
I always feel like I level up when I read an actual book during downtime/lunch rather than go on Instagram. Even when it is a bit of a trashy read.
Kate
Some additional ideas:
– Volunteer your time and energy with a worthy cause
– Set a weekly routine that brings you happiness
– Start journaling
– Pick up a new, creative hobby (I like ones that involve creating something new, like an art piece, etc.)
Anon
I don’t think adding to your time commitments is a great way to go. I think of leveling up as streamlining and making things easy. That’s culling your wardrobe down to great pieces you love, keep dry cleaned and repaired. Keeping your space clean and having a place for everything and getting rid of stuff in storage you’ll never use again. I’d also level up your interior choices if you haven’t, get good bedding, use the real china, get rid of crummy throw blankets, clear out clutter, etc.
Roxie
These are all fine ideas but they’re also a lot! Set yourself up to succeed by only focusing on 1-2 over the next 6-12 months maybe?
Anon
Yeah, that’s exactly what I was thinking. These are huge goals!
Anon.
I am very busy so I make “one time” community commitments rather than volunteer to serve on boards. I will do the trash pick up every two months, for example. As a lawyer, I have enough meetings and paper work so physcial labor where I do what I am told to do is refreshing.
Cb
This is me. I got the school uniform bank sorted, and will happily come and physically help (with things, not children), but I won’t attend PTA meetings.

Most of what you listed is purely physical. That tends not to be as satisfying or long lasting as an experience like gaining a new skill , spending time with someone doing something fun, or doing something exciting/ new-to-you imho.

I am considering saying yes to a friend’s invite to “National Park Week.” We will drive around Utah and explore different national parks. I am more fit but less motivated to see everything so I think it will be OK. Anyone visited Utah parks before? Is it worth the time away from work? I can swing it financially but would need a layover (no direct flights from my airport) and want to make sure the parks are worth it. I’ve been to national parks in California and Maine but not in that part of the US.
Senior Attorney
I just got back from Utah and it was GORGEOUS! I say go for it!
Anon
Yes the Utah national parks are some of the best in the US. I love Acadia (my family has a home there and we go every summer) but Utah is grandeur on a different scale.
Nylongirl
Utah National Parks is one of my favorite trips ever!
Anonymous
I was there last week (Zion) and it was incredible! Previously been to Yellowstone and Acadia, and this was totally different and entirely worth it.
Kitchen Remodel
Lived in UT for awhile and hit all 5 NPs in a year across a few trips – they are totally worth it!!!! It’s also great that your friend wants to trip plan. Let her go crazy! You can’t go wrong in visiting any parts of any of them.
Sunshine
Only caveat before you plan is southern Utah is hot hot hot in the summers.
Anon
The parks in Utah are incredible. Arguably the best in the country. Definitely worth it!
Anonymous
+1 with the weather caveat above. One of my favorite things I have ever done is the hike in Horseshoe canyon (part of Canyonlands) to see the pictographs. There are a lot of them and they are huge – the figures seem like human-sized. Truly unforgettable for me. And it isn’t a particularly difficult hike, just hard to get to.
Walnut
Since you seem a bit lukewarm, why not join for part of the trip? It’s pretty easy to head to Zion/Bryce via Vegas or Arches/Canyonlands via Moab. If you love it, plan a return trip to continue the adventure.
If I’m picking favorites, mine would be Zion.
NY CPA
It’s technically a Navajo tribal park rather than national park, but Monument Valley is gorgeous, especially at sunset if you can squeeze in a night to stay at The View hotel (pretty basic hotel, but the view really was to die for).
anoncat
I have only been to Zion, but it is fantastic. Possibly tied with Yellowstone, which was my favorite NP before visiting Zion. I’ve been to all of the NPs in CA, and Zion is better.
Anonymous
Really? I guess if you like heat and lots and lots and lots of dry red landscape. Not for everyone for sure.
Anon
Not the 6:20 poster but I agree that Zion is better than anything in CA. We did not go in the summer though, because I hate heat.
Anon.
That dry red lanscape is where I go when I meditate. And I only visited Zion in the summer. Prettiest place on earth.
Seventh Sister
Zion is so gorgeous, definitely one of my favorites.

Low stakes question: favorite breaded chicken product for the freezer? Nuggets, tenderloins, whatever… prefer to airfry but conventional oven is also fine. TIA!

To add, I cook both brands in the air fryer.

i buy real chicken (either tenderloins or thin cutlets…. if you want you can buy regular breasts and cut and pound them which is cheaper), dip it in egg and panko italian breadcrumbs and then freeze it. It’s really not complicated and feels more like real food than nuggets.

I like the Applegate chicken tenders to heat up in the airfryer for salads.

If you were to give your gut-instinct opinion, who do you think will win the election? Bonus points if you can say what state you’re in and why you feel how you feel.
I think Kamala, just because she is 4-6 points ahead in recent national polls and it feels like they’ve corrected for their polling errors in 2016 and 2020 (Trump’s polling numbers now look very similar to the outcomes in both prior elections, whereas polls before those elections did not). It also feels like momentum is building, she’s by far the more compelling candidate, and he seems foolish and silly in a way that I think will depress moderate Republican’s turnout. But I am so, so scared he could win and I hate how close it is.
Anon
I’m very confident Trump will win because Trump always seems to outperform his polls by several points, and margins in swing states are currently very close. Democrats have outperformed polls recently, but never when Trump was on the ballot. I also think if Kamala wins the election it’s not a sure thing she takes office because a lot of the key swing states have state election officials who’ve been open about refusing the certify the election. If the Electoral College margin is close (which it will be) it really only takes one state’s electors refusing to certify.
Also, she’s not 4-6 points ahead nationally by any means. RCP which averages all polls has her 1.7 points ahead. 538 and some sites with more sophisticated algorithms that take into account how good the poll is have her +2-3, but I have not seen any polling average that has her +4, let alone +6.
Cora
I’ve worked in politics, so that affects my opinion. I’m in NY. I think that polling “errors” are largely misunderstood. Hillary’s polling was within range.
I think the biggest difference is that compared to 2016 people do know that they have to go out and vote. There are more than enough Democrats and centrists – they just have to all actually vote.
Trump is definitely less compelling as you said.
I do think she’ll win, I just don’t think it has to do with this campaign or election being thaaaat much different from older ones.
Anon
Are plans to challenge results legally (and intimidate the courts, etc.) not a big concern? (I’m finding it so hard to tell what to be concerned about after Jan 6.)
Anonymous
i read that Kamala’s legal team is 20x the size (or budget?) of what they were for 2020 for this kind of stuff.
Cora
They are a concern but they’re also beatable. All the lawyers etc hired are a good sign. The campaign has a lot of money to throw at this, which is helpful.
I’m not declaring it’ll be one way or the other, re: all the comments about “jinxing” it! I’m just saying that I think a lot of people are paying attention to the wrong parts. I really see this as very similar to Hillary Clinton but with an audience that knows how important it is to vote more. We were lulled into complacency by the Obama era. People were super excited about Clinton at the time, with all the memes and social media etc. And the same people thought Kamala was super cringe-y 3 months ago.
Trump’s turnout and GOTV was generally poor last time. The Republicans do know this and the RNC supposedly has taken steps to fix it, but some of that may be undone by Trump’s campaign.
People are excited to vote when people are positive about it. So when you talk to your friends, don’t be fatalistic about it. Even “we need to vote to protect our reproductive rights” feels more action oriented and motivating than “omg trump is horrible there are no good options but you must vote”.
The swing states, including states that typically weren’t considered in play (Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, Nevada etc) are looking promising. Frankly nothing outside those states matters. National polling a la Nate Silver is confusing bc of the electoral college. It’s basically everyone has the states they’ll win no matter what and then you have to focus on the relatively low number of states that are a toss up.
Anon
Thank you for weighing in.
Anon
I’m superstitious so I don’t want to make a prediction. I want Kamala to win more than anything, but right now Nate Silver’s current forecast gives Trump the advantage. There is a 20% chance that she will win the popular vote but lose the electoral college vote. I have a young kid and a big job but I am volunteering for the campaign every weekend, knocking on doors in my swing state.
Anonymous
i think it’s going to be close, but i’m cautiously optimistic for Kamala. Someone pointed out that polling just cannot take into account the youngest voters because none of them will pick up the phone. I think a lot of people are getting turned off by Laura Loomer being completely nuts but in his ear and pretty clearly his mistress. I’m in a red state in a very red, conservative district (sigh) and we’re not seeing all of the TRUMPTRUMPTRUMP signs we saw in 2016 and 2020.
but we’ve got a month and a half left to go, so who knows.
Anon
I don’t think you can read too much into signs (we had a Biden sign in 2020 and don’t have one now, even though I’m far more excited about voting for Kamala than voting for Biden 4 years ago) but as anecdata the opposite way – my light blue college town in a purple county in a very red state has far more Trump signs this cycle than ever before. My sense is that he’s gained a lot of ground with upper middle class college educated voters, especially POC, who were turned off by some of the anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant stuff in 2016. Which is baffling to me because he still said all those things and he’s done a lot of terrible stuff since then, but somehow he’s more palatable now than he was then. I’m consistently shocked by how many otherwise decent, highly educated upper middle class people I know who support him and many are not white.
Anon
I am way too superstitious to post an opinion on this. I hope you didn’t jinks it!
Senior Attorney
Same. I am petrified.

No speculation, but from a swing state: Following the debate last week, the one undecided voter I know moved from possibly voting for Trump to abstaining.

Has anyone read Dr. Stacy Sims re exercise in perimenopause? Is your takeaway that she’s a hustler or the real deal? I was listening to a podcast and once she started talking about supplements I started wondering.
(Even though I used to really love Mary Clare Haver or whatever but I think she’s super buy-my-supplement now…)
Anonymous
I started out thinking she was the real deal, but more and more I think she’s a hustler and a shill.
Anon
I think she is right in the big picture. I’m not following to be monetized, more for my general info and health b/c no one really cares about my demographic.
Former Junior Associate
This is purely impressionistic–I’ve encountered her work ambiently a fair amount but not really engaged with her directly–but I think I agree with this poster. The more generous way of putting it (and 3:19 may or may not agree with this!) may be that she’s a real doctor doing real research talking about real things but overemphasizing the impact and importance of things that are real but ultimately not that big a deal for many/most people. I’m thinking in particular of modifying training to correlate with menstrual cycle timing, which I’m sure is really helpful for a few people but I’m not really convinced is something we all need to be leaning way in to or is a Big Deal for most people.
Anon
I don’t know Dr. Sims. I’ve honestly had good experiences with supplements when it comes to women’s health. I’m not talking about really out there stuff. But I take methylfolate for PMDD and magnesium glycinate for premenstrual cramps. It doesn’t surprise me that women would have to rely more on OTCs since no one wants to invest the research funds into taking something through the FDA approval process (and when they do, like with Deplin, it costs so much more!). The fact that it’s underregulated and underresearched and buyer beware feels like just one more way women’s health is devalued at this point.
I don’t take creatine or collagen (except via creatine and collagen rich foods) though, and don’t plan to start. Those kinds of things are what food is for for me.

Help dress me please. I have a big work event in October and I’d like a new outfit. I need to wear this from 8am-10pm so comfort is important – thinking one of these two Fold dresses. These are both great dresses. I like the plum color; you will stand out a bit more than the gray, which is on the drab side, but it’s still understated. I also feel the shape might be more flattering to a pear shape, although that’s not me so I can’t say for sure.
Anon
The Andorra looks gorgeous!
The other is lovely, too, but I am allergic to wrap dresses (real or faux). Unless I knew and loved how it fit me, I would not want to risk fighting with one for 14 hours nonstop.

Frankly I don’t think the fabric on either of these is that special. I’m certain it is comfortable, but you could probably find something similar for a lot less money.

Kitchen Remodel
Still working through design finalization on our kitchen remodel, but a general contractor question — we haven’t gotten any kind of budget breakdown yet and the design firm is asking us to pick specific cabinets and verify 100% of the design before they give us any quote.
There’s a couple of things still up in the air that would be determined by overall budget – for example, a dishwasher that is panel ready vs a standard dw, or using one large front window vs moving the small one. Is it normal for them to need certainty on everything before budgeting it out for us? I am feeling frustrated on choosing when it feels uncertain to me whether I’m making a $100 or $10,000 choice.
Anon
It’s a chicken egg problem, the cabinets you pick can radically hangs the cost. Ask your contractor for more help in making the decision and explain that you want to factor in the cost.
Anon
For what it’s worth – if you have kids/pets I would not do a panel ready dishwasher. Maybe my family is particularly messy but the panel (hardwood, painted, high quality cabinet maker) is wearing like milk – tons of greasy fingerprints/food drips/nose prints/etc. that are much harder to clean vs. stainless.
Kitchen Remodel
We have both, and my gut instinct is “no!”, but our designer is saying it is much more noticeable when you use light cabinetry like we are going for. I appreciate the insight … because it aligns with the choice I’ve made in my heart already, lol.
Anon
My designer insisted that performance fabric island stools would ‘be super durable!’. They lasted a year before I had to replace them with lucite ones that are totally wipe down-able. I honestly don’t think designers live with real people who make messes.
Anon
I LOVE the look of our paneled dishwasher and fridge
anon
You have exactly the conversation you described in your post, and create the plan a, b, and c contingencies. To bid and estimate people do need to know the scope of work. The window choices are pretty big line items from a work perspective, compared with a true purely finishes choice (e.g., what color of brass for the door pull).
Kitchen Remodel
I communicated exactly my post (via email, which maybe is not the way to go), giving her a list of 3 things that will impact cost but we’re waffling on. Her response was “I do need the design finalized before I can get an estimate for labor and cabinetry together for you, but once we make those changes we’ll be there.” But, the problem is that I don’t know if I want to make those changes! And I completely agree – they can drastically change budget, but I’m willing to compromise on some things (for example: the dishwasher?) if it means I get a huge picture window. I’m just not sure I can afford the picture window. I’ll see if they can quote it separately…
Anonymous
Get on the phone and talk it through!
Anon
This.
Anon
Ask them to quote what you want. Then you can go back and have them update the quote based on things you want to change due to cost.
No Problem
Can you ask her to price a couple different options? Price with the big window vs. with the small one, etc. Tell her that if you select one option now, you’re definitely just going to ask her to price the other option later, so she might as well price both of them now. And of course you’re going to pick X cabinets now (mid range, high end, whatever you’re leaning towards), but that might not be your final choice, so you’ll be asking for a revised quote anyway if what they quote in the first round isn’t what you ultimately decide to go with or isn’t in budget. Or maybe just go ahead and make your best guess selections for this quote, and then ask her to change to some other options for a revised quote.
Anon
And be sure she gives you reasonably itemized quotes so you can see how changes will impact your overall budget.
Anon
I really hate this length of blazer! I’m tall and they always just look wrong on me. I was pretty unhappy when that’s all that was available in stores.

I’m very tall too, but it’s more about proportion. I’d wear this with wide leg pants so the shrunken top is balanced out.

As a short person, I love this length. The proportions work on me. The long boxy blazers that have been “in” lately make me look like I’m 7 years old and wearing my dad’s jacket. Those are a hard no for me but maybe a heck yes for you!

Maybe let her sleep in on Monday and take her into school when she wakes up naturally. We’ve done this after late flights home. Most likely she’ll be up and ready to go by 9/10AM you’ll incur a tardy at most.

Take her! It’s one night and she will be able to tell her friends about it (and you can tell us about it!). Although on another level, I loved the triple overtime NLH playoff game with my high schooler that ended after 1am.

Take her! She may remember this the rest of her life (or maybe not but it’s so sweet to support their passions when you can).

I would take her. My 7yo daughter and I have been going to WNBA games this season, on school nights we get home ~930PM, and she’s been fine the next morning.
Anon
I would try to make it work! If she can get at least 8 hours of sleep then she may be ok to go to school the next morning, but if not then you can let her sleep in and take her to school a bit later. You know your kid best.
Anonymous
n of 1, but I would totally take her. My 7 y.o. is my youngest and the things that she goes to on school nights is kind of ridiculous.
Anon
I would be inclined to let her go and sleep in the next day. We’re pretty strict about missing school compared to many (e.g., no weeks off school for Disney vacations) but she’s only in first grade and it’s a special one time thing so I think being a couple of hours late to school is not that big a deal.

It’s one night! Take her! She’ll remember it for years I bet.
Anon NYC
Yes I’d take her and let her sleep in. She’s not going to miss anything incredibly important on Monday morning.
Anon
Nearly any one day of school is forgotten in the long run; I’d bring her since it could a lifelong memory in comparison!
Anon
I would take her but be prepared for her to be sick or too exhausted to go to school in the morning. Small sample size, but I think that’s happened at least 50% of the time we’ve done something similar with my 6.5 year old. I still vividly recall the basketball game last year we got home from at ~10 pm thinking we would sleep in a bit only to be woken up by her vomiting around 2 am. I think it was a combination of too much popcorn and all the game day excitement/jumping around

Take her. Missing a random Monday morning school or being tired for a day is a small price to pay for an awesome memorable night.
Anon
Yes, I’d take her. I really like the suggestion of letting her sleep in a bit. She will remember this outing with you forever.
anon
I did something similar for my newly-7 year old. I also planned for her to go late to school the next day. A year later she still talks about what an amazing night it was, her best memory, etc. (usually I am VERY strict on a 7:30 bedtime).
Anon
Take her. This is the stuff key memories are made of. One day of school is not.
Anon
This is my take, too. The memories from this event would be worth a sluggish Monday and it couldn’t get much more convenient than having it in your own city.

This will be a core memory. Even if she misses a day of school.

This, exactly. It’s also how I choose to live my life as a general matter.

Absolutely yes since it would be such a huge deal for her.

I have a kid about the age of yours. She’s not as obsessed, so YMMV, but would taking her to a local high school level competition be equally fun? To my kid it would be.
But to my nba obsessed 12 year old high school bball isn’t the NBA so internally get that it may not be an option!

I have a 6.5 year old who’s not a superfan of gymnastics but she absolutely knows Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee and would be significantly more excited to see Biles and Lee and their Olympic teammates than random high schoolers, fwiw. Although she would enjoy a high school or college meet too probably.
Anonymous
Take her. And tell her that she has to get everything ready for Monday morning before she goes and that she still has to be up on time and at school and you don’t expect any whining about it.
Anonymous
She’s 6.5, not 12 ;).
Anon
Or let her know that sometimes fun things happen in life and it’s okay to not be obsessively responsible at all times. Yikes.
Anon
Yeah this is big yikes to me. Yes, a 6.5 year old is old enough to be generally getting ready for school independently. But they’re still little kids, you can cut them slack when they’re tired without ruining their progress towards being a functional adult.

Another vote for go and sleep in. We travel a lot and although we plan trips around school breaks, we sometimes send our first grader to school an hour or two late when we arrive home late at night from a trip or we’ve crossed lots of timezones and she’s jetlagged. At least in our district an excused tardy is not a big deal (vs absences, which are tracked and technically you have a finite number before they refer to CPS).
Anon
I would go and let her skip school the next day. This kind of experience matters so much more than one day of first grade.
Anon
Agree on one day of first grade not mattering much, but I don’t see why she’d need to even miss the whole day. It sounds like she’s staying up a couple of hours past bedtime, so letting her sleep in and go to school late should be plenty. Practically speaking, I don’t know many 6 year olds who could sleep until noon even if given the opportunity. They’re not teens.
Anon
Do it and enjoy being fun mommy.
Anon
I’d take her and let her skip school the next day. Once in a lifetime opportunity.
