I got an ad for this tote bag sometime last week, and thought the pattern was s unusual and kind of beautiful — I love the way the flowers almost disappear. (It's not quite an ombre or a gradiant effect, but it reminds me of those.)
Do note that this isn't my preferred shape for a tote bag — I've definitely prefer a shoulder strap! — but the hand-held bags definitely have a certain grace and polish. I tend to associate them with luxury, to be honest — I imagine the person who carries one like this would have a very easy commute (so they aren't carrying the bag for long periods of time), and doesn't need to keep a ton in the bag anyway.
Readers, what are your thoughts on hand-held tote bags? Yea or nay?
The pictured bag is now marked down to $210 (from $350) at Macy's. There are a few other colorways at Macy's, RalphLauren.com, and Zappos.

Women’s Prize longlist just announced. I always find it a reliable source for good reads, if folks are looking for something new. Of the list, I’ve loved The Marriage Portrait, Demon Copperhead, and Trespasses. Filling up my library holds list now.
Anon
Thank you for the head’s up! I actually haven’t read any of them (hangs head in shame), though many are on my TBR list. Moving them up now!
I just finished “I Have Some Questions for You” by Rebecca Makkai and enjoyed it for the most part.
Anon
The only one I’ve read is The Marriage Portrait and I loved it.
Anon
Loved Demon Copperhead and also enjoyed Stone Blind.
To the other poster above, I also just finished I Have Some Questions for You by Rebecca Makkai. It wasn’t nearly as good as The Great Believers, so it suffered a bit in comparison (I feel the same way about everything I read by Emily St. John Mandel that’s not Station Eleven, which I know isn’t really fair). I also felt like it was trying too hard to engage with every trend of the day in a way that will probably make it feel dated in a few years, and there was one narrative device that drove me crazy. But otherwise I thought it was quite good and did enjoy it. I certainly didn’t want to stop reading it and finished it within a day!
Anon
Highly recommend Demon Copperhead – my best book of 2022.
Vicky Austin
I really would like to get into Barbara Kingsolver’s work – would folks recommend starting with Demon Copperhead, or with something older?
highlander
Demon Copperhead is a retelling of David Copperfield, so if you’re familiar with that story it would be a good entry point for BK’s work. Of her other books, I most enjoyed The Poisonwood Bible.
anon
I’m so envious of you that you get to read all her books for the first time. She’s my favorite author and I’ve read her books several times.
I would maybe start with the Poisonwood Bible because I think it may be her best one, although I love love her first novel The Bean Trees and it’s much shorter (and has a sequel) so it wouldn’t be a bad place to start.
Vicky Austin
Oh, I love the way you phrased this – makes me even more excited to pick up Poisonwood Bible sometime soon! Thank you (and everyone) for weighing in.
Anon
Poisonwood Bible is her other big best-seller.
Senior Attorney
The first one of hers I read was The Bean Trees and I still remember loving it, even though I don’t remember anything else about it.
Anon
I loved Demon Copperhead and am a big Barbara Kingsolver fan, but I actually think it’s quite different from most of her books. It’s based on David Copperfield, and Dickensian is definitely the right word for it. Poisonwood Bible is my favorite and I’d be more inclined to start with that or Prodigal Summer, unless the idea of Dickensian brutality really appeals to you. In that case, Demon Copperhead is definitely worth it.
anon
Yes to Prodigal Summer! I need to re-read that one.

SOS. Attending a bridal shower on Sunday and need to figure out a gift (yes I need to bring a physical gift). This is my husband’s best friend’s fiancee, so want to get something nice, but also not looking to spend a fortune because we’re writing a generous check as a wedding gift. Maybe $50-75 range? I don’t know her that well, and unfortunately the registries are largely picked over or have items in the $25 or over $100 range. Would it be a huge faux pas to get a nice picture frame on Pottery Barn even if it’s not on her registry? Something like the Monique Lhuillier Mia porcelain frame? I do think this is consistent with her style (based on other things on the registry). And of course she could always return it and get something else (she did register for some things at PB). TIA!
Vicky Austin
I say that would be fine, or could you do a group gift on one of the more expensive items with someone?
Vicky Austin
Or pick a couple of the cheaper items that are semi-related to each other – did this for a cousin.
Anon
+1
Just… not another picture frame. She will get so many. And everyone has different tastes. And she has so many things to return.
Rainbow Hair
Between her registering at PB (e.g. returnable) and you thinking its her style, I think that’s a good approach.
MagicUnicorn
Are any of the $25 range items related enough that you can get several and wrap them together?
Anon
If an electric wine opener isn’t already on the registry, that could be an option. The Rabbit one is $45. They’re always well received.
https://www.rabbitwine.com/products/electric-corkscrew-with-foil-cutter
Anon
And get a bottle of wine to go with it perhaps
Anokha
Love this. I also do not know if this counts as a physical gift, but I’ve done gift cards to a local spa, with a message to the bride-to-be that she should take some downtime in the stress of wedding planning!
Anonymous
If it’s already $45 there is no need to get a bottle of wine too. Sheesh.
Anon for this
They did get a very fancy one already, unfortunately!
Anonforthis
Thanks all. I could buy a few $25 items, but they are really boring items like vegetable peelers and pot holders, and I just can’t bring myself to do it. I’m going to get the frame and include the gift receipt, hopefully she will like it, but if not, should be an easy return or exchange.
Anon
That’s ok. That’s what she wants! Not another knick-knack.
Do you really think she will put her favorite picture from her wedding in that frame and display it forever? No. But I guarantee you if she asked for a salad spinner or a fish spatula… she will use them forever.
I used to think like you do…. and then I saw the “nice” things I overspent for wind up in the garage sale / donation pile.
If you have to buy her something she has not expressed that she actually wants, buy her a consumable or a gift certificate to someplace where she can treat herself (great restaurant/spa etc..).
Anon
I totally totally agree!
It’s also kind of curious to me when someone asks a question, gets almost all “no” responses and other ideas, and then returns for some reason that they’re doing the first thing they said that everyone advised against. It’s okay not to crowd source decisions, but why even ask?
Anon
A lot of people said this was fine, though. Personally I’d go with the registry but it seems like a lot of people said OP’s plan was fine.
Senior Attorney
Honestly, my favorite wedding gift out of three of my weddings was when somebody bundled up all the small items like vegetable peelers and pot holders (along with the whisk broom and dust pan and similar) and put them all together in one big package. I still have and use some of those things and think about the giver every time I do.
Vicky Austin
Same – as somebody in the thick of baby registry stuff, I promise no matter how dinky the item, I did register for it on purpose! And even before I was engaged, I was leaving a years-long employer who knew I would be getting engaged soon and received from the folks there a basket full of tiny kitchen tools (citrus reamer, potholders, chip clips, a really nice ice cream scoop, a small cutting board I literally use daily five years later, etc.). I appreciated those just as much as I did the stand mixer and fluffy towels.
anon a mouse
This is so nice to hear, because this is my default shower gift – to get a bunch of nice wooden spoons and kitchen utensils (especially some more specific ones, like the berry colander, strawberry huller or egg separator), tied together with some fun tea towels. Boring? Yes. Useful? Absolutely.
MagicUnicorn
Same! I have such fond memories of my aunt who bought all the little random leftovers off our registry and bundled them into a laundry basket with a bunch of kitchen towels.
anon
You’ve now created an errand for her. Get the registry stuff.
Anon
exactly
Cat
FWIW, there were a few people who did ‘clean the registry’ shopping for me when I got married, and I loved it. It was kind of hysterical at the shower to open a box that was a bath towel, a fancy garlic press, and a pretty canister for countertop storage of cooking utensils. I would 100% go that way rather than the picture frame!
Anon
I’d get two $25 items.
Nesprin
Nice bottle of champagne and $ would be my vote.
Anon
Bottle of Veuve.
Senior Attorney
I don’t do Veuve Cliquot for weddings because “veuve” means “widow.” Maybe some Moet & Chandon or Tattinger. I like Schramsberg, too.
Senior Attorney
Clicquot
Anon
As someone who is well aware that Veuve means “widow,” I still don’t think that’s somehow a problem for a wedding or bridal shower.
Anon
Yeah, have never heard not to give Veuve to brides because of the name. I would still do registry stuff over champagne though. Not everyone drinks it or will have occasion to serve it.
Emma
The Veuve Cliquot (she was a real person) was actually a bas@ss and one of the first women to make high-end champagne. I wouldn’t worry about the symbolism too much!
Anon
I am superstitious so I very much appreciate this advice!!
smurf
There’s a registry for a reason and you don’t know her well — just get a few $25/cheaper items!! Showers IME aren’t about surprises.
I personally would not do champagne unless you know they love it, we got SO many bottles of champagne as engagement gifts (which was very sweet & generous!) and it’s hard to get through them as more than a glass gives me a headache and you have to drink it in one day.
Anon
+1 This is my big problem with champagne/prosecco/cava. I love it, but my husband doesn’t drink it and even if he did two people can’t begin to finish a bottle, so unless I have occasion to serve it to a large group (which I rarely do) a lot of it would go to waste.
pugsnbourbon
It’s regiftable, tho :)
Anon
I guess, but I feel weird giving someone champagne for the same reason I don’t like receiving it (unless I know they’re hosting large gatherings regularly, but that isn’t most people in my friend group). And also it makes me sad, because I really do like it and want to drink it, it’s just hard for me to do that.
Senior Attorney
The solution to “you can’t drink it fast enough” is to include a champagne stopper as part of the gift! They work really well!
anon
I am not a champagne person, at all, and I know I have a bunch of bottles of nice stuff that I haven’t opened. And regifting is risky.
ALT
Get a couple $25 things that “go” together — cookie sheets + cookie dough scoop; peeler + veggie chopper; colander and dish towel; etc. I do this all the time when registries are picked over or if my budget isn’t very big. Choosing two or three items that are companions or related makes it seem a bit more thoughtful.
Anon
If they have registered for China or glassware or silverware, get them open stock items, like a plate if it’s expensive or a place setting if not. She can always return extra pieces if she doesn’t want them but most people welcome extras for the inevitability of something getting broken.
Anonymous
Okay I have what is probably a dumb question: do people generally use dental insurance to cover any of the cost of orthodontics for their kids, or do most people end up paying out of pocket? We have kind of crappy (and very niche) insurance with a limited list of in-network orthodontists. I’m trying to figure out if it is worth finding someone on that list.
BeenThatGuy
Absolutely. I have the “Cadillac” of insurance plans, per my son’s Orthodontist. It paid for 50% of his braces.
Anon
Most people I know have paid for it out of pocket. I think it’s possible to get an insurance plan that covers it but it severely limits your choice about who to see, and it was important to me that we see someone reputable who had good bedside manner. So we sourced recommendations for orthodontics and went to someone who was great but didn’t take insurance. I think that’s pretty common.
Anonymous
We have pretty good dental coverage and ours covered something like $3000 of the cost, which is about half. Our preferred orthodontist took our insurance.
Anne-on
We wound up paying out of pocket as my plan covers preventative dental care/Xrays but not braces. From asking around it is super common for orthodontia not to be covered, or to have only a portion allowed. I’d also go to the best ortho you can find – I’ve heard too many horror stories of dentists prescribing braces for everyone whether or not they need it, badly attached aligners, etc.
Anon
dental insurance is inherently cr@ppy for orthodontia, so I think most people do what they can with the lifetime max + out of pocket. If your plan is super specific, and it’s worth the additional cost, just go for someone that works for you.
Anon
Yes, I signed up for the highest level of dental insurance specifically because it offered a 50% orthodontia benefit. The extra premium amount was like $12/month and the insurance saved us $3000, so I was pretty happy with the choice.

My anxious teen has to start high school at a new school in August. Open house is this week. It is in an area where people are rich and fashion-y. Teen will be in something on the hippie end of the preppy spectrum. Big southern city. I can’t go full-on rufflepuff, but if I’m not in formal workwear, I tend to err on the far not-cute end of the athleisure spectrum. How can I be more vanilla-invisible while still in comfy footwear for lots of walking? My workwear is very black and IMO not-too-approachable in a family-friendly setting (and I have a strong RBF). Help with just the fashion aspect of this — I promise I am fun and friendly and just want to be invisible so teen can have a good time.

Depending on weather, I love these “cool mom” looks:

Lily
Depending on the weather, some of these are very cute:
https://styleyouroccasion.com/cute-mom-outfits/
Generally, I’d say you should wear some cute, on-trend sneakers (not athletic ones), or some on-trend birkenstock type shoes, with a casual but tailored jogger or straight-cut jean and on-trend cardigan or blouse. Consider a trench or oversized blazer (with sleeves pushed up) if it’s cooler out. A pair of statement sunglasses (either fancy brand or no branding) would be great too if you’ll be walking around outside in sunny weather.
pugsnbourbon
What about some new athleisure and cute sneakers?
FP
Yeah I’d either go to JCrew and get some New Balance sneakers and have them help you pick out something cute (like paperbag waist pants or something like that), or go to Lululemon and get a fresh athleisure set to pair with on running shoes. I am also in a big Southern city and these would both work as under the radar looks for this kind of event. Do you have a store like Marine Layer nearby? That could work too.
Anon
This is not an occasion that requires buying new clothes. That is ridiculous. I know this is a place that exists to discuss consumption, but this strikes me as way over the top.
Anon
Maybe I am weird, but I usually only shop when I have things to do and realize I don’t have the right outfit for the occasion.
pugsnbourbon
Eh, it’s almost spring – lots of people pick up a few new pieces in the springtime. We’re not saying she should buy a ballgown she wears once. She says she wears athleisure.
Anonymous
My first thought is medium grey denim, ballet flats, floral print blouse with some color but maybe that’s very 2010? Interested to see what others say.
anon
I live this life (are you in ATL, by any chance?). Honestly, some degree of rufflepuff will be what most moms will wear, but understanding you don’t want to do that, a couple of outfit options:
-Spanx faux-leather high-waisted leggings, longline/crop-top that meets the high waist (so no actual exposed stomach – like the Vuori one), oversized oxford shirt or flannel in non-fall colors, fashiony sneakers, all your diamond jewelry if you have it.
-Nice jeans, flowy floral blouse (think Boden-y) or Breton shirt, chunky platform sandals.
In my experience, your options in this type of environment are either Very Rufflepuff, High-End Athleisure, or Kate Middleton on the Weekend.
Anon
+1 to Kate Middleton on the Weekend – nice jeans, a Breton sweater, good watch and jewelry, and loafers or upscale sneakers.
Anon
I recommend the Kate Middleton on the Weekend look. It is low key enough that you will not stick out and gives off marginally more polished vibes than leggings.
And take this for what it is worth, but my high school age daughter once looked me in the eyes and very seriously thanked me for “not being one of those moms who shows up everywhere in yoga pants and leggings with her Hydroflask in her hand like a bad stereotype.”
Anon
I would wear a cashmere sweater, which I assume wouldn’t work for you. If it was warm, maybe a nice top from a store like Sezane or Amour Vert with denim?
Anonymous
Athleta swing forward skirt and a top you already own? If you expect to have a few of these events over the next 4 years of high school it might be worth getting a few pieces close to the uniform.
Anon
Nice jeans in a current style worn with flats. On top, a Breton sweater and nice earrings.
Anon
I get my bonus on Friday and need to spend part of it immediately on medical bills. Is there any reason you all have seen that would require me to pay any part of my bonus back if I leave the company? I’m mostly thinking about this because I haven’t been there a full year yet. I started last summer and I do plan on leaving soon (I hate it here).
anon
Look at what you’ve signed/checked “I agree” to, including any relevant policies.
It’s common for sign on bonuses to come with an agreement to pay back the company.
I’ve never heard of such an agreement accompanying an annual bonus. It’s really common for people to leave a company soon after after the annual bonus hits their bank account.
pugsnbourbon
IME bonuses are for work you’ve already done, so not something you’d pay back. This obviously could vary depending on the circumstances of your job so check your contracts/employee handbooks/etc.
Anon
No one can answer this 100% without seeing your bonus plan documents, but IME if you are employed on the day it’s paid, it’s yours no clawbacks. It’s for the prior fiscal year generally (or quarter or whatever), so already earned.
Anon
It would be unusual to have to pay back a bonus, but agree with checking your employee handbook. Also consider that paying medical bills may not be the best use of the money. Medical debt normally doesn’t accrue interest and vanishes from a credit report as soon as you pay it off, so if you don’t need a strong credit score in the near term there’s not a lot of harm in letting it sit. Personally I would pay off all high interest rate debt (including student loans), build a sizeable emergency fund and even up retirement contributions before paying down medical debt.
Anon
+1
Agree with this.
If your medical bills are high, ask for a payment plan. No downside to this, if money is an issue.
Anon
If you’re using it for medical bills, can you put it into an HSA?
Anon
This is the best idea…
anon
In my world people frequently leave just as soon as annual bonuses are paid because there is no recourse to pay them back (finance/real estate). Sign on bonuses are generally different and come with a contract or agreement of some kind that does claw back the money either on a total or pro rated basis. So, agree with others that it depends on what the bonus is and what you agreed to, if anything, but generally speaking, no. Also, do you have any friends who have left the company before? Can you ask them if they ran in to this?
Anon
Did you have to sign anything to receive the bonus? If not, your employer would have a very difficult time trying to claw it back.

My beloved pajamas have disappeared, and I’m looking for a replacement. Something fleece-lined for cold Northeast nights. Any suggestions?
Anon
Old Navy if they aren’t sold out for the year. The.my tend to bring them out October / November each year.
Anon
They’re sold out of a lot of warm stuff but it’s easy to find NWT on eBay. I had to replace my daughter’s Xmas pajamas because hers were too short, and I found them right away on eBay. (She wears adult sizes)
Anne-on
The LLBean flannel pajamas are so warm I sometimes have to take the bottoms off in the middle of the night. They also wash and wear like iron, so I’d start by looking there.
Anon
Has anyone tried wearing a stick-on bra that’s basically two pieces of silicone molds intended to be worn with a backless dress? Do they stay on and are they better than the alternatives (basically stick-on pasties I think)?
DC Inhouse Counsel
I’ve worn them, but I have never worn pasties, so I can’t compare. I liked the silicone mold ones, they stayed on, were easy to wash so I’ve been able to use the same ones over a dozen times with no reduction in stickiness. I felt like they added some nice shaping, which pasties probably wouldn’t do.
Anon
The one I tried didn’t work for me, was maybe a 32E. I had boning inserted into my dress so that my dress basically became a bra instead, if that is at all an option for you.
Anon
These options work really well for me, though fwiw I’m an A cup. Both are comfortable, stay sticky to rewear, and the bra version provides a little shaping/lift.

Repost from late morning:
Laser hair removal question – at my third treatment I had a really bad reaction on my legs (no bad reaction on underarms or bikini though). I developed red itchy bumps that I of course scratched in my sleep and scarred. It lasted for close to 3 weeks covering the entire treatment area. Miserable. I went back to the medispa and they did a test patch with a lower frequency (?) laser, same thing. I’m only halfway through my treatment and I’m still seeing hair growth. Is there anything I can do here? The medispa (and the surgeon who runs it) are perplexed. Do I ask for a refund for the remaining treatments and just resign myself to going back to shaving?
pugsnbourbon
Did they use any topical gels for pain/numbing? Maybe you could be reacting to that.
OP
Nope, no gels ahead of time.

Repeating here for the afternoon crowd:
Has anyone recently purchased a home/condo in DC and can share anything – literally anything – about the experience and the marker?
anon for this
It will be easier to answer if you have a more specific question, such as a price range or a neighborhood. Condos slowed down over the last year because they are generally more sensitive to interest rate hikes. There’s a lot on the market now – my advice would be to look in your target market and look at what has sold in the last few weeks, and look at the price history on redfin to see if it’s going over asking and see if you can figure out the trends. Also pay close attention to the fees and the condo docs (if you are under contract) — the cost of everything has been going up so that will translate to condo services and repairs too. Make sure you understand any existing obligations to the building and any upcoming repairs, plus the status of reserves.

Best resources to prepare for a phone interview for in-house counsel job? I’m a senior associate (12th year) in big law. This is the initial screening. I was referred for the job by someone at the company. Multinational company. Hate the situational/behavioral questions.
DC Inhouse Counsel
Have somewhat of a script answer ready to go for why you want to leave big law, that’s not just “to work less”. If you’re talking to current in-house counsel on the phone they’ll totally get it, but sometimes the business folks don’t understand and are genuinely confused why you would be willing to take a pay cut.
Spend a lot of time on the company’s website and really try to understand the company’s product.
Good luck!
Anon
Be prepared to talk about how you’ve worked closely with business leaders at a company and can play nicely. I went inhouse at the same level, and a big question (since it’s a bit late to go in-house as an associate) is whether you’ll adjust well to in-house life and aren’t a cutthroat big firm lawyer. The fact that you’re a referral is a huge plus.
Davis
Hate them, but prepare for them! Use the STAR method and write a few of the common ones out, like “a time you juggled multiple priorities” or “a time you lead a team through a challenge.” The Interview Guys is one place that has a primer on STAR.
Good luck!

Goinhouse.com guide, and lean on your network.
When we’re hiring for more senior roles in house, we want to see that you get that you’re giving real, practical, actionable advice (not just providing regulations for the company to weigh risks), we want to see that you are friendly/personable enough to be a partner to the business, and we want to see that you are a roll-up-your sleeves non-diva. If you are doing a lot of international work, by definition, you will be supervising local counsel, so you should probably emphasize flexibility on time zones and excellent project management skills too.
Think of ways you sound like a team player who knows their stuff and gets stuff done.
Those are the examples we want to see. Your legal knowledge is table stakes.
Your soft skills and your ability to “think like an in-house lawyer” will get you the job.
Good luck! I am sure you’re super-qualified. Land the plane!!!

The sooner you tell her the better things will go for you. Without exception, in my experience the worst outcomes have not resulted from the initial screw-up, but from the (attempted) cover-up.

Low-stakes question: I need new perfume, mine has been discontinued and I’m ready for a change anyway. What’s the best way to round up several samples to try? Just go to a Sephora or department store? I have strange sensitivities to certain scents (but not sure what exactly they are) and have had bad luck in the past with scents changing by the end of the day to be unpleasant, so I’d like to try a bunch of different ones for a few days each. I’ve worn the same scent for more than a decade and before that stole a bottle from my sister.
Moose
If you’re open to trying a completely new-to-you brand, you could try come thing like Phlur, where you can be sent a whole bunch of samples to try:
https://phlur.com/products/the-discovery-set
Jules
I tried Phlur a few years ago on Kat’s recommendation and now one of their scents – Siano – is the only one I wear, I love it. The sampler is definitely the way to go; a couple that I thought I would like from the description were really not for me once I tried them IRL.
pugsnbourbon
Not an expert on perfume, but I want to plug Frama’s 1917 eau de parfum. It’s the most interesting thing I’ve ever smelled! I got a little sample and I can’t stop sniffing my wrists when I wear it. I’m going to ask for a full bottle for my next birthday.
pugsnbourbon
Oh and my less-expensive favorite is Demeter’s Salt Air.

I would buy one of those Sephora samplers that gives you a discount on the full price bottle.

Sephora will give you 3 free samples at a time.

I’ve had several years of good experiences with the perfumed court dot com. Just got another order yesterday! They offer sampler packs of different sizes.
The other place I’ve heard good things about but haven’t tried yet is lucky scent dot com. I believe they are former employees of the perfumed court who branched out on their own in order to sell more niche fragrances. I think in addition to samples they have a service where you describe what you like and they send you a bunch of samples they think you will like based on that.
smurf
sephora samplers! They have the little sample bottles and come with a certificate for a free full size perfume of any one of the fragrances in the set. There are variety ones and themed ones like ‘vanillas’, ‘florals’, etc.
Anon
I love smelling things in real stores – you have so many more choices than ordering things online.
Anon
I just asked at Sephora and they said they stopped giving out free samples :( company-wide policy apparently. But agree with other comments that you could buy one of their sample packs!
Anon
What have you been wearing and what are you looking for in terms of notes – same family/similar scent? There are some fragheads on here (including me) that may be able to point you in the right direction.
I personally find Nordstrom better for sniffing scents, for what it’s worth. Saks is even better if there’s one near you.

and also, don’t forget ebay. my scent was discontinued in the early 2000s, and I scored a lovely unopened bottle on ebay last year, not stupid pricy, and it makes me so happy to smell it again (Des Lys, by Annick Goutal, in case anyone is wondering).
Engagement Ring Anon
Engagement Ring Anon from this morning – no good news yet. I checked the gym locker / locker room (and meticulously between the parking area and the gym) with no luck. I remember that I stopped on the way home to get gas last night, so I’ve got the gas station to check. I ripped apart my drivers side area (no luck) and did a cursory search of the rest of the car – I’ll need to double down later. I’ll check my gym bag and then inside my house near my key ring next. You’ve given me tasks, which at least has given me more hope than earlier today.

I so hope you find it. Turn those pockets inside out, as well – I’ve often assumed something wasn’t in a pocket only to check again out of desperation and find it in the very bottom.

Yes! Check your coat pockets and gloves.

If you chuck your keys into the cup holders like I do, look there, on the floor next to both drivers’s and passenger’s seat close to the cup holder. I have lost (and found) things in both the cupholders and that fell between the seats as I was dropping something into he cupholders. Good luck.

Zipper pocket in your shorts or leggings?
An influencer I follow once lost a ring in her oven mitt – the prong caught on the terry and it slipped off inside!

Makeup bag? Sometimes I’ll throw mine in there without thinking when I wash my face. Any chance near a nightstand or your bedding? It’s easy when you’re tired to slip it off and not remember.

You may have luck searching the same places after dark with a flashlight. It’s easier to find shiny objects at night than during daylight hours.

I do this when I drop a contact lens—turn off the light and use a flashlight to look for the glimmer. It could work well for a ring, too–great suggestion.

The crossbody strap on an older leather bag with shiny silver hardware broke. Any recommendations for a black or black-patterned guitar-type cross body strap with shiny silver hardware as a replacement? Thanks!

Try Salt handbag straps

Etsy is your friend. You can customize black leather replacement straps by length, width, hardware. While you are ordering, maybe get a silver chain strap, also, for one of your bags.
