Gift Idea: Lilly Pulitzer Lanyards

I just happened to see these Lilly Pulitzer lanyards on Etsy, and because I can immediately think of at least four women I now need to email to let them know personally, I thought I'd mention them here. I know readers are always looking for a “nicer” solution for the dreaded ID badge, and this option is certainly colorful and fun.
Whether it will work with your existing wardrobe will largely depend on what you wear; for example, if you tend to wear a ton of black and gray then I think it'll be a fun pop of color (although I'm not sure what the overlap is between Lilly fans and women who wear primarily black and gray). Just a note: This Etsy seller, JustFrocket, also does little neck pillows for flying. Lilly Pulitzer Lanyards

I’ve gotten the flu every year the last 3 years, had a sinus infection or serious cold every year for the last 4, and had the stomach flu every year the last 3-4 as well. I am very healthy, single, no kids – doctor’s only suggestion is stop volunteering with kids and maybe I’ll be less sick. I plan to give that shot in 2019, and take a daily multivitamin. Anyone else successfully whip their immune system into shape? Swear by EmergenC / similar products?
I mean…that doesn’t seem too crazy to me? Are you getting the actual flu, or just a bad cold?
Hand washing, hand sanitizer, flu shot, lots of sleep. I used to work with kids and got sick a lot, so that’s probably a big factor.
+1 when I rode transit, I was less sick in the winter and attributed it to gloves = cleaner hands; so treat your hands as germ transmitters and wash often!
yeah, kids are petri dishes. my niece was visiting and in 24 hours she took me down with her kiddie germs.
+1 – kids are germ factories. Wash your hands often (its one of the first things I do when i come home. Get lots of sleep. Drink water, run a humidifier. If I feel a cold coming on, I go for the Mucinex to thin the mucus out enough that I can get it out and it doesn’t collect. I don’t like the options that dry you up just to alleviate symptoms.
And even then, you’re still probably going to get at least a bad cold.
Get the flu shot every year.
Wash hands regularly and avoid touching your face.
Sleep is also key for immunity and often overlooked.
Do you get a flu shot?
They say the gut is the key to the immune system, so looking into yogurts with probiotics, etc, might be helpful.
I mean this in the nicest way possible, but this isn’t going to make an ounce of difference. You’re only chances are flu shots, and avoiding germs as suggested elsewhere (lots of hand washing, not be around sick kids) etc.
I’ve gotten a bad cold, usu. followed by a sinus infection, nearly every other month for the past like four years. I’m single, I never interact with children, and I don’t take public transit. Literally every single time anyone is sick at work, I get sick. I eat well, exercise regularly, drink a ton of water, use hand sanitizer constantly, and I am aggressively protective of my sleep.
I’ve been to the doctor repeatedly and they insist it’s within the range of normal, or maybe it’s a stress reaction. It’s so frustrating. Recently I started really ramping up my vitamin intake and it seems to help – I take a multivitamin, vitamin c, probiotic, allergy med, and zinc every day. Fingers crossed I’ve survived a couple of people being sick and I didn’t get it (though I feel like I’m fighting a cold now… ugh). I always have emergen-C and cold eze on hand but I think you really need to start taking them early. When I feel like I’m coming down with something (like now…) I clear my schedule and sleep like 12 hours a day (or as close to it as I can get).
It sounds like you need to ditch the GP and see an ENT. You may have problematic sinuses and need an MRI/other scan to determine what’s up. I did this and my doc said my sinuses are a disaster, but unfortunately I’m not a candidate for surgery. He has me doing a daily saline nasal rinse and while it’s miserable and feels like drowning, it’s helping.
I’m sorry to hear that! I’m similar with sleep and other health habits, including handwashing and sanitizer. I have gotten the flu shot every year – either I’ve gotten a different strain or got the flu in March (after getting the shot in October or November). I’ll take a look at my vitamin regimen and will start keeping the emergenC/similar on hand. Thanks, and good luck with your health as well!!
That does sound like a lot of illness. Prioritize handwashing (and hand sanitize before you eat if a sink isn’t available), sleep 8 hours, take Zicam ASAP at the first sign of a cold, and don’t be around sick people to the extent possible. I have an immune disorder and rarely get sick (have never had the flu, maybe get one light cold per year or none at all, etc). following these guidelines (knock on wood).
I’ve started using a humidifier everywhere. I do mean everywhere: I even have little one that plugs into the USB port on my car. I’ve found when my sinuses aren’t dry, I’m less likely to pick up a respiratory bug.
Take Vitamin D3 daily (up to 10,000 IU), Vitamin C and drink Kefir or very good yogurt that has maximum probiotics. When I feel a cold coming on, I take EmergenC as early as possible and drink Kefir….I am usually able to nip it in the bud. Get lots of extra rest and eat well – healthy foods, broth soups and lean proteins.
Washing my hands regularly, keeping my spaces clean (but not overly disinfected), doing high-intensity interval training with weights four times a week, and eating a ton of citrus and brightly colored fruits.
I find sleep is the big thing for me. If I’m getting lots of sleep, it’s almost impossible for me to get sick. If I’m running low on sleep, I get sick at the drop of a hat.
Exercise also seems to help.
Forgot to also mention something that has worked for me when I feel a sore throat, cold virus coming on – drink V8 or tomato juice with lots of hot sauce and other favorite bloody mary type of seasonings – black pepper, horseradish, etc. Drink hot like a soup or cold several times a day. I started this in college and it kills a cold – I think it’s the combination of vitamins C and A from the juice, the cayenne in the hot sauce and some salt in the seasonings, and the fact that you’re getting extra fluids and flushing the virus from your body…good luck!
Thank You (and all) – here’s to a healthier 2019!
My kid is now 4 and I volunteered a lot with kids before he was born. I find I rarely have anything longer than 24 hours. I’m not in the greatest health or shape by Ive reached a point where I at least seem to bounce back fast.
To ward off colds I do the following: wash hands/hand sanitzer all the damn time.
I take a probiotic and eat lots of fermented food.
I also take a womens multi in the winter.
Is this ok copyright wise ?
I think the seller is making them out of Lilly Pulitzer fabric that the company sells.
I got some school logo boppy covers this way on Etsy out of material that is a licensed item for that school.
No, Lilly Pulitzer is a trademark. The seller should state “lanyards made of Lilly Pulitzer (TM) fabric.
But it’s up to Lily to enforce it….
I’m looking for recommendations for…I don’t even know what they’re called. Basically headphones that don’t play music but can block sound. I have a pair that’s meant for shooting ranges but they hurt my head (too tight after about five minutes, I have a big head). Searches for noise cancelling headphones just being up Bose and the like which are way more $$$ than I want to spend (around $50) and I’m not sure if those would even help block out all sound without turning on some sort of white noise mechanism which I don’t want. Help?!
I think you want “earmuffs.” I’ve used them for hearing protection doing set construction, so I don’t know if they will block the kinds of noise you want, but that search might get you closer.
I have a pair of Bluetooth Cowin headphones that have noise cancelling. Sometimes I turn them on/put them on and don’t actually play any music. It’s not 100% noise blocking, but it’s enough that I can focus.
I actually get a lot of the same effect by just putting in earbud headphones, except the Cowins are more noticable.
So…basically, you want earplugs :)
google “hearing protection”. Ear plugs will work just fine if you want the in-ear kind. (I prefer the over-ear).
Just to clarify, I want something to wear over earplugs to provide maximum sound cancelling. I don’t want anything that’s electronic though – does such a thing exist?
Look for hearing protection with gel ear pads (assuming you want over the ear ones). I have a pair for the range with gel pads and can wear them for hours with my giant head. They are pricey though (over $200) with some sort of fancy electronics, so my exact ones won’t work, but the gel pads did make a huge difference.
Forgot to add…if you want in-ear ones that don’t fall out, look up Surefire ear plugs. They have these adjustable clips for your outer ear, and you can actually pop out these stoppers in them for when you want to hear some things.
Thanks everyone! Some googling to do tonight now!
Just saw an internet ad for Bose “Sleep Buds” which are in-ear noisemasking. I like them because ones I’ve tried would be uncomfortable if you were to sleep on your side with the buds on the pillow.
I have them & like them.
Our library uses Leightning L3 Noise Reduction Headphones. They run about $25 each. I can’t speak to the comfort level.
Gift ideas for the gentleman cat fancier?
I’m getting a puzzle for a (senior citizen) gentleman bird watcher…
Lint roller?
Ha!
I once bought a cat bed made with his favorite football team’s logo fabric.
Guys who like cats often drink Earl Grey tea. Get him a box, along with a snifter. He will appreciate it, and cats like the smell too.
Last year a got a friend a bottle of cat wine and a mug that says, I work hard so my cat can have a better life. It was fora female friend but I think those things are pretty gender neutral, if your gentleman friend likes wine.
Socks with pictures of your cat’s face. I bought dog and cat socks for my nearly adult kids last year and cat socks for a 60yo cousin this year. I used DivvyUp and I know there are a few other vendors. Send a pic of your pet and pick the background color. They are adorable.
Cat bookends.
A cat wax seal. Also gift the wax seal set (spoon, candle, and wax).
An electric fleece blanket – for him and his cat!
Apollo Peak cat wine for the cat and a nice bottle of human wine for him.
Custom sweater with his cats face. Or mug. Or pay someone to draw both as Simpson’s characters and stick on mug
I need recommendations for a gift for a nine year old niece. I don’t spend much time around children, don’t have my own and have no idea what is popular nowadays. For reference, she is pretty precocious, likes to read (but is not a bookworm), fairly girly (has always been into pink, princesses, now nail polish and experimenting with kiddie makeup – but I doubt her father would be happy me giving his nine year old makeup), and is pretty average with respect to interests in STEM or sports – she doesn’t love it or hate it.
What about fun bedroom slippers? I saw some for kids when I was out shopping that have unicorn horns, sparkly kitty cat faces, that kind of thing on them.
Other suggestion is headphones (for computer, tablet, etc.) with cat ears on the top headband part. My niece has some and she said they’re the coolest thing for her and her friends to have.
Noel Streatfield’s “shoe” books. Should be available on Amazon
Maybe one of those art kits or friendship-bracelet/jewelry making kits? No idea if they still make them but they were always a hit back in the day. Is she too old for American Girl doll stuff?
Meg Cabot books? I think she has a tween series called Diary of a Middle School Princess or something like that that is sufficiently girly but good. If that is too mature, there is a series called Allie Finkle that is about an elementary school girl.
Are you thinking of the Princess Diaries, or did Cabot write another princess series?
Cabot has written a LOT of books. “From the Notebooks of a Middle School Princess” appears to be the first in another series published starting in 2015.
Yeah she doesn’t write them. At this point her name is marketable and most of her books are ghostwritten.
It’s a spinoff of The Princess Diaries for younger readers.
If you’re going to be nearby her this holiday season, take her to get her nails done and then for a lunch date at a grown up restaurant. (Mom of an 8 year old here. Doing “big” stuff is very important at this age.)
Posting here as I think I posted wrong in the previous post!
single, mid-30s, LCOL suburb, USA… My work life is better than it’s ever been (though I’ve worked more than I ever have- have gone from approx. 40 hrs/week to 70ish), pets are healthy/happy, my rental apartment is consistent and all good. I do lots of volunteer work. Sometimes I think I might want to date but then realize I have no interest in making small talk and my work busy-ness would make it tough to make time for a new relationship. Great friends, though many are scattered throughout the country, so friend time is often phone, not so often in person.
Sometimes I just feel… down or something. Like when a kid needs a hug but can’t articulate why kinda thing. I snuggle with my pets, I have that companionship, I’m typically more of an introvert, but sometimes I feel meh or even meh minus. I can’t tell if it’s the cold and dark season or if it’s because I hate the holidays due to no family and all of society’s expectations for romantic gifts and a romantic NYE… how do I know if this is just seasonal and it will pass or if I should go talk to a doctor or consider anti-depressants or something?
If you think it might be seasonal, have you thought about a sunlamp? Very happy with this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K08ZDBI
I am a bit older, but this describes me well. I don’t want to suggest you absolutely don’t need to talk to a doctor or to consider anti-depressants, or to discourage you from exploring that, because I just don’t know. But I do think sometimes we just need more human contact than we are getting. While I feel like I have little to give, having taken care of 100% of my own needs for the better part of three decades, I also think I might have more to give if I were also getting. There is just no feedback loop if you aren’t dating and your friendships are remote. Maybe try to make a little more room for in-person contact.
I think it is a perfectly natural need. Why should it be seasonal at all? People just need some other people caring for them. I just need to snuggle and feel warm some times.
If being very busy is the only reason you are not dating, I suggest you make time. Who knows what will open up for you? Next year by this time, you my be getting all the hugs and snuggles you need :-)
In the same situation I would probably ascribe the feeling to skin-hunger or lack of sex.
Maybe get a professional massage or a cuddle session, and see if that might make a difference?
70 hours a week is a LOT, especially if it’s a baseline and not a short-lived busy period. I wouldn’t discount the ways that might be impacting your ability to do other things you want to do and stay balanced and healthy as a whole person (not just a worker).
Does anyone have an alone NYE tradition? I am single and don’t really feel like going to a bar with friends this year, and I don’t want to spend it with anyone I’m casually dating because it seems like too much pressure. I want to do something low key and fun but everything I’ve seen online is a quiet night with your partner which sounds nice but obviously is not my situation.
I watch my favorite movie trilogy back to back, starting at 6:00 p.m., with bubbly and popcorn. This works solo, with a partner or family, or as a low-key sleepover party with girlfriends who are also uninterested in going out to the bars.
I take a luxurious bath, put on my coziest pjs, and watch one the Thin Man movies while drinking champagne and eating Thai food.
I read and eat Chinese food. Last year I changed things up a little and binge-watched The Great British Baking Show while eating Chinese food. Chinese food is really the key for me I think.
My ex and I used to watch Princess Bride and eat Chinese food every NYE.
I map out goals for the coming year, perhaps even broken down by quarter, and identify the one biggest thing I want to achieve. I don’t do resolutions, but I do find that this feels re-invigorating.
At the end of one particularly awful year, I also wrote out some “intentions” and burned them in my fireplace along with close friends I had over. Can be done solo as well.
I go for a run on any holiday when weather permits.
Uh, my close friends were also burning their intentions in my fireplace. I did not burn my friends. Poor sentence construction.
LOL – thanks for the correction :-)
Never accept an invitation from Monday! ;)
Meditation and reflection (and prayer, because I’m deeply religious). I keep a journal all year long and starting around 4 pm, I put my phone on silent, turn off the tv, and just reflect on the past year and what’s happened. Then I journal/pray about the coming year and do some spiritual reading, as I feel called to. This lasts generally a couple hours and is SO what I need after the holiday craziness. I take a bubble bath when I’m done and head to bed at a normal time. Then I’m up early on New Years Day and LOVE to head outdoors with my dog hours before anyone else is up, and ring in the new year as a fresh, clean slate. Then home for black eyed peas! (But no hopping John – I’ve tried and just cannot get on board.)
I clean/vacuum, then take out all of the trash and take a very long shower… it’s my way of clearing the previous year and coming into the new year clean and ready. Then I journal favorite memories of the year, things I hope for/wish for/am working towards, and set goals/intentions for the next year. (I’ve done this in the evening while watching NYE specials, I’ve done it during the day before having evening plans with others, etc. so it can work around whatever schedule you have!)
For many years now, I’ve enjoyed writing in a journal on NYE. I reflect on the year and make a lot of lists, like places I traveled, new things I tried, new friends I made, things I accomplished at work, etc. I find that this brings a broader perspective to how I spend my time, and it’s very satisfying. Some years I’ve also done a yoga class either on NYE or NY day, which I like a lot.
Clothes gifts for a 9-y-o girl?
I don’t know her, it’s through a local “giving tree” program and her card gave no specifics, only asked for clothes and noted the size. I’m thinking Old Navy or Target – anyone with girls that age think one is better than the other? And are there any must-haves? I will do gift receipts of course, but I’m just not really around any girls that age and would like to try to be in the ballpark of what she might like.
I had a situation like this (for mom and a child). I just gave a $100 target gift card inside another holiday greeting card wishing them a good time.
This program mostly deals with actual, wrapped gifts, although some recipients do specifically ask for a gift card to somewhere. This is a good idea, but I want to get this girl something to open (and hope she’ll like but can return if needed.
There’s a store called Justice in the malls that I gather is What’s Hip for Tweens, so that might be a good place to browse for inspiration? The great thing about Target and/or Old Navy is they almost definitely have one nearby, so if what you buy doesn’t work, exchanging it will be simple.
Did you know Justice used to be Limited Too? They changed their name (and a lot more! Remember when the Limited used to be high end?)
I used to work at Limited Too! But their aesthetic was pretty different from Justice’s now… then again, it was [mumbledy] years ago.
9 is at the older end of the age range for glitter/unicorns/etc., which means Justice and Target’s Cat and Jack line may or may not work. My daughter preferred Old Navy at that age. Target also has a newer line for tweens called Art Class that skews a little more mature. Definitely include gift receipts.
Okay, good to know. And I had forgotten that I also need to buy jeans for a teenage boy, and I’d like to make one stop, so it’s probably Target after all. Thanks, all!
I do think there’s a Justice at the nearest mall, so I’ll check there. Thanks.
There is a Justice at the mall that’s on my way home, so win-win. But when I put the word “Justice” into Google maps, I got tons of attorney’s offices. Really? I’m a lawyer, I Iike to think we’re on the side of justice and all, but I wouldn’t actually tag my law firm’s office with that in Google . . .
Stick to Target or Old Navy because they’re more ubiquitous, therefore making returns and exchanges easier. I would do Target because Old Navy’s quality is pretty bad a lot of the time.
Thanks.
I suggest Target or Old Navy with gift receipts tucked in for Mom if sizes are wrong. I usually do a variety of colors or prints and make sure they have at least X number of outfits – if that was all the clothes they have, could they wear every shirt with every pair of pants? Or if I buy 6 shirts and 2 pants plus a pair of leggings…make sure there are 10 “outfits” that kind of thing. I got amazing deals at Target this year for a similar project (shirts for $3, jeans for $8, leggings for $4) and managed to get a ton within my budget. Good luck!
I’m hosting Christmas dinner for out of town relatives (so not pot luck). I would like to serve turkey, ham, traditional sides and desserts. I enjoy cooking but am thinking I will enjoy the day more if I outsource some of the cooking. Any tips and suggestions on what store bought items are as good as homemade? Also, any specific ordering suggestions? I have Safeway, Whole Foods, and Honeybaked Ham in my neighborhood.
I love ordering from Whole Foods. I have never had their ham, but the turkey, sides, and pies are all terrific. I think the menus vary by location, but my family especially loves the corn pudding.
