For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
I recently realized that I really like a lot of Etro's prints — it's a shame they're so expensive. I was taking a swing through their collection for another story I'm working on, and this unusual pants suit came up. I love how the colors are ultimately muted and almost serene, but the pattern is really interesting — it looks so lux.
I think you could wear the blazer and pants together, or separately — I think both would look great with a lot of white (white blazer + tank + pants, white tank + white pants + blazer), but I think it would be so easy to pick out that dusty blue or even the slightly warmer pink and have fun with a more complicated outfit.
The blazer is $2450, and the pants are $890.
(There's an absolutely stunning fit & flare dress in a similar pattern… if I could wear beige I might just have to stalk that one on sale.)
It's difficult to find very similar options in lower price points, but in the same general ballpark, you might try this Banana Republic Factory linen suit in a pale blue print, the blazer from this affordable ASOS shorts suit (sigh) (in regular and plus sizes), or (much brighter) this blue floral drapey suit from J.Crew.

Remember the hot pink floral Etro suit? I still dream about that one.

I love Etro scarves. Somehow I managed to score two at an outlet. They’re big shawl type things in gorgeous prints. One is navy base with magenta, lime, and other colors in sort of a modern paisley. The other is off white base with a black curlicue type print. They were expensive but I have used them SO much. They’re my preferred travel scarves/airplane blankets.
Anon
Is there a good budget-friendly dupe for these? They are spendy even used (but lovely). What else is there like this?
Anon
Honestly I haven’t found anything. And I’ve looked.
Anonymous
You might look at Peruvian Connection, they have some gorgeous print scarves.
AIMS
Look at Saks Off Fifth, I’ve found some great huge silk scarves there in fun prints that weren’t not ex-endive (easier in person than online, I think).
Also – look for paisley shawls on Etsy, and check out muse up gift shops.I love the scarves at the Met.

Has anyone used eQuip for a background check? They require a current supervisor’s contact info.
I’m wondering how soon I should notify my current employer/supervisor about a tentative federal job offer starting in Fall 2023!
Anon
There are probably some exceptions for very unique job situations, but generally I wouldn’t give more than two weeks notice. I made the mistake of giving several months notice when I left Big Law – I was moving for my husband’s academic job so I didn’t think it would be acrimonious, it’s not like I was going to a competitor – but the main partner I worked for got super p1ssed off and treated me really badly, and they tried to make me the fall guy for some ongoing problems the client was unhappy about. It ultimately didn’t really matter that much and I don’t think the client really believed them that a fifth year associate was solely to blame for all the problems, but it was just such a crappy way to go out and I wish I’d given a much shorter notice period. It’s also not unheard of for your employer to terminate you immediately so unless you can go without income until this new job starts it’s a big risk (in my case I was actually kind of hoping that would happen, because I wanted a break, but it didn’t).
DC Pandas
Yes, my preference is definitely to wait and see how the background check shakes out; I’d like to give notice around the 2-3 week mark.
Unfortunately, my current supervisor is required to be interviewed- and the contact information is due by EOD Friday. I’m not quite sure how to proceed- the tentative start date is more than 4 months out.
Anon
I believe I used a trusted co-worker for that when I was in your position years ago. Can you reach out to your investigator / eQuip rep at the federal office you’ll be working at and ask?
Anon
If I recall correctly, I spoke with FBI agent before the contact at the supervisor. You could probably wait thirtyish days, but it would get a little dangerous to wait after that point if you don’t want them to find out from the background interview call
Cotton Cardigans?
All, I love the Jenni Kayne cocoon cotton cardigan but cannot spend $400. Does anyone know of a similar one under $150?

The merino wool cardigans at Lululemon are pretty close. I bought one a few years back that is still going strong.

It’s cashmere, not cotton, but Quince has spot on dupe for $140 https://www.onequince.com/women/women-s-mongolian-cashmere-oversized-boyfriend-cardigan-sweater?color=black

I had the cropped version of this cardigan from Quince and the quality was really poor. The cotton version they have might be better (and it’s a lot cheaper).
Anonymous
I do not get the love for Quince. Every item I have ordered from them has been disappointing. I’d rather spend a get more and get something that won’t frustrate me.

Same here. It’s bad knockoffs that they advertise as dupes, which rubs me the wrong way.

Help me plan a low key nice surprise for my kid’s 13th birthday tomorrow. We are having a big party for him on Saturday, but I have a super busy day at work tomorrow, and he has school. Ordinarily I would let him skip school, and I would take a day off. In the evening, he has piano and trumpet lessons. His grandparents will take him to an early dinner. What can I do at 6 am before he leaves for school? Get up early and make pancakes? Balloons waiting at breakfast? I feel terrible because it is a milestone birthday that will be filled with very ordinary obligations.
Anon
Don’t feel terrible! Unless you’re born June through early August almost all childhood birthdays are filled with ordinary obligations like school and activities. I think it’s sweet you’re trying to make it special but it’s really not that big a deal to go to school on your birthday. My parents were in the “you never miss school unless you’re running a fever or vomiting” camp, so I always had school on my birthday except for the years it fell on a weekend and I promise I don’t have lasting trauma from it (even though I love taking my birthday off work as an adult – to me being able to take random days off is one of the perks of adulthood!).
Anon
+1 The idea of taking your birthday off of school is so foreign to me.
Anon
Yeah, I let my kid stay home in preschool but as soon as she started regular school she had to go.
Anon
Every day in school was a bad day, but I have especially sad memories of birthdays spent there.
Anon
That seems like a much bigger problem that has nothing to do with birthdays.
Anon
Agree. I never had a day off for my birthday but I kind of liked having my birthday at school. I was a shy kid but the teacher wishing me a happy birthday was so nice for me.
Anon
Yeah, huh? Is this something other people do?? It would never cross my mind.
NYCer
I would get some balloons for the morning and a cake for the evening at home. Any chance you could join the early dinner with grandparents?
Cat
My parents started a thing of me opening a small present at breakfast (think like a xmas stocking) to make my school year bday more festive. As a teen it was usually a cute accessory that I would be excited to wear to school!
Anne-on
Don’t feel bad! The idea of skipping school for your birthday was SO not an option when I was a kid and frankly we all loved the extra attention from teachers/friends that day.
Is there something he’s super into that he doesn’t get to do often? Mine would be over the moon if I let him watch YouTube or a TV show at the breakfast table along with chocolate chip pancakes on his birthday.
anonshmanon
I find balloons in the room door very festive, unless he is the kind of teen who would find that too childish?
Agree that going to school isn’t really problematic, that’s where all his friends are going to wish him happy birthday!
Anon
We do cake for breakfast on birthdays. It’s not that much worse than sugary cereals and it starts the day off with a celebratory tone. Super low key and easy to run to the store the night before.
Anon
Same!
Emma
+1 to cake for breakfast. My mom did this and it was my favorite. And I usually got to pick what I wanted for birthday dinner too.
Anon
I’ve done chocolate chip pancakes for my kids on their birthdays
We have a “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” banner type thing – big silver cardboard letters strung together – we bought when the kids were little and have had it ever since (they’re in college now.) One of the grownups has the responsibility to hang it up the night before the birthday. Over the years my crafty daughter has added a crepe paper rosette banner and battery operated twinkly lights behind the letters. Now the kids hang it up before our birthdays too! It stays up for about a week because we have birthday weeks, not just birthday days.
No Face
I never had the day off of school for birthdays and he probably won’t be able to do that in the future anyway.
I always have cinnamon rolls for breakfast for basically every holiday.
Anonymous
I do streamers in the bedroom doorframe for my kids bdays while they’re asleep and they still request it. Also small present morning of (earrings this year, but silly socks and other accessories have also happened). Occasionally a box of sugar cereal for breakfast that is a special treat.
Anonymoose
We always do a birthday banner, balloons, and a pile of sprinkle donuts on birthday mornings. We often open presents (or a present) at breakfast too because our evenings are filled with running about.
Anon
My parents used to tie balloons to my chair at the table, and I’d also wake up to some age-appropriate surprise (streamers taped over my doorframe, an unwrapped gift standing somewhere obvious, or fresh flowers). I could choose what we had for dinner that night and a movie to watch in the evening. Since I always had my birthday during the school year, I would go to school and if it was a party year, the party would be on the after-birthday Saturday.

Is it frowned upon to use personal days to cover vacations? It used to be prohibited by our employee handbook but it looks like they changed the wording and it no longer says anything about what personal days can and can’t be used for. But I feel like people may not be happy. FWIW, personal days don’t roll over like vacation days do and I have several expiring at the end of June that I would love to use to cover part of a vacation next month.
Anon
I think this is really a YMMV/company culture thing. is there anyone more senior you can ask?
Anonymous
I always use mine up first because they don’t roll over and it didn’t occur to me that it could be considered bad form.
Anon
Same. But I’m in higher ed and people tend to be really chill about vacation and days off.
Anonymous
I think you need to go to someone in your company who can answer these questions for you. Who is it that you feel would not be happy with you if you were to use your expiring personal days for vacation?
Anon
The only one who will know that you are using personal days instead of vacation days is your boss. I would ask them if they are ok with it

Poll: What is the deductible on your home insurance / auto insurance?
I think both of ours might be a little high and am wondering if it’s worth a conversation with our agents.
Anon
I honestly have no idea. Is that bad?
Anon
I poked around on the State Farm website and for our house it looks like the deductible is 1% ($4,300) but $43,000 for earthquakes (we don’t live in earthquake territory though). I still can’t figure out what it is for our cars but our cars are 20+ years old and near worthless from an insurance perspective at this point, so I don’t think it really matters.
Anon
Haha same!
Anon
$2k on home; $1k on auto. We’re established DINKs and feel comfortable covering items less than that.
Anon
I thought policy holders got dinged somehow for using home owner’s insurance for smaller claims anyway.
Anon
Yeah I was always taught you only use it for big claims.
Anonymous
$1K on home and $500 on auto. The price of the policy is higher if you want lower deductibles.
Anon
I work in SF and park my car outside on the street sometimes. My car deductible was changed to zero when I had to start parking in SoMa in SF, because car break-ins are inevitable here.
Anonymous
I have a much lower deductible for comprehensive coverage than for collision.
anon
+1
My catalytic converter got stolen this year….
Anon
$2k on house and auto. Our cars are older. We are long established and have that tucked away in it’s own little savings account.
Anonymous
Don’t remember exactly what it is on auto, but I stopped covering the car itself when it was 10 years old. The insurance company probably considers it totaled as is!
Senior Attorney
I think the rule is always “get the very highest deductible you can cover” because that’s the way to get the lowest premiums. So ours is, I think, $500 for auto and $1,000 for homeowners because that’s as high as the insurer will go.
Anon
That seems really low to me! Well, low for the home especially considering you live in a HCOL area. Pretty standard for auto.
Curious
Ours is $2,000 for auto, and we can cover it, but I keep hearing $500! It made me wonder if I was getting a bad deal. That said, I forget what the monthly payment is, but it’s under $2000/year.
Senior Attorney
Okay, I just looked it up and it’s $1,000 for both auto and homeowners’. Plus 10% for the California Earthquake coverage.
Anon
$10,000 for the home we’re supposed to buy Friday. I don’t know what it is for my current home. It has been a while since I’ve shopped HO’s insurance. I’ve owned a home for 25 years and have never filed a claim, so I wanted the highest deductible possible in exchange for the lowest premium.
Anon
$1000. I had it higher but my umbrella didn’t want to attach over that.
Anon
I should note, our auto collision coverage is as high as they’ll let us set it, but the comprehensive is low, because I priced it out and comprehensive is a cheap coverage. I encourage everyone to look into this. And yes, we carry physical damage coverage on paid-off cars.

Randomly, if you are in a city in the SEUS and have done a will/trust lately (nothing crazy, I’m just overinsured and if I die when my kids are young, I don’t want them to have funds outright), what does that thing cost? I’m guessing per person, but I need to do and so does my husband (he gets around to things; I want this done yesterday and am now threatening to do solo, which may nudge him and if not, I’m guessing that attorney can easily dup documents for him down the road).
Anon
It was $800 for me and husband in Indianapolis about 5 years ago. Not SEUS but guessing pricing is similar, at least in non-Atlanta cities. I don’t think it was really a per person charge – all the documents were shared and/or identical so I’m guessing the price for one person would have been only slightly less. But both you and your husband need the documents.
Anonymous
It really makes the most sense for married couples to do this together.

Does anyone — or any voter — still believe after all this federal courts fast-track practice about mifepristone and the chaos it causes for medical business (pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies, hospitals, medical offices) that Republicans/conservatives are really the party that favors predictability so that businesses can plan and make money? (We already know they don’t care about predictability for patients and families.)

Also, I pay MORE in federal income taxes because of his 2017 tax bill. The first year, I asked my CPA to calculate it. I paid roughly four thousand dollars more than I would have without his tax bill. I no longer ask the CPA to calculate it because it is too upsetting.

Makeup help – I am going to a black tie gala on Saturday and want to try actually putting effort into eye makeup. The issue is that I don’t have time to go to a department store makeup counter, and I’ve had terrible, terrible experiences at my local ulta and Sephora stores for help on anything. So, does anyone have any suggestions for an eyeshadow pallet (is that even the term?) that has all the stuff I need in it and perhaps an extremely basic beginner YouTube video of how to do eye makeup? I don’t need anything that’s crazy colors. I only ever wear light foundation and some basic blush, so I’m totally lost in this front. Thank you!!!
Calrayo
I have one of the Urban Decay Naked palettes and I use that for the galas I’ve attended. I just wing it though, I don’t have recommendations for videos.
anon
If you don’t wear eye makeup normally, I would not attempt anything difficult. Also, be prepared that some people’s faces don’t look great with a lot of eye makeup even if applied expertly. I think you should just go buy a laura mercier caviar shadow stick in a fun shimmery color and get some good tube mascara. So easy to apply and will look like a great upgrade from doing nothing. Buying a palette is a waste.
Anne-on
A huge +1 to this. The caviar sticks are SO easy to use, wear well on my oily lids, and the shimmer shades look very festive. I’d go with either a copper/gold or a silver shade depending on your eyes with mascara. If you want some extra sparkles the Rare Beauty highlighter is great – the powder one broke when I looked at it sideways but the liquid one is just as pretty and easy to dab on. Put a tiny bit on the inside corners of your eye (more like the side of your nose really), on the tops of your cheekbones, and under the arch of your eyebrows.
Anonymous
Agreed. Concealer, the caviar stick, mascara, maybe a brow brush color.
DC Anon
I second the rec for the Laura Mercier caviar stick (+ tube mascara)! Amethyst is a great lid shade and would be worth checking out. I just swipe the stick onto my eyelid in a couple of passes and then blend with my fingers. Can consider doing a lighter shade above your eyelid as well, to add to the look.
Anonymous
I actually like the NYX drugstore dupes of these eye crayons better than I like Laura Mercier.
South American girl
Agree on the Laura Mercier shadow stick, it’s error proof and impactful. Kiko Milano has a fab cheaper dupe if you have a store near you. If you prefer a powder (though creams are easier to blend and you can use your finger), L’Oreal Paris Infallible 24 HR Eyeshadow is very good.
If you really want to do a smoky eye, I love Lisa Eldridge’s tutorials on Youtube. They are all tasteful, not overcomplicated and she’s a great instructor. Maybe pick a look, go to the drugstore and grab a mini palette with the necessary mattes and some shimmers (I find shimmery shadow a lot more forgiving and it’s automatically festive), like the e.l.f. Bite-Size Eyeshadow Palette.
Anon
Yes yes yes Laura mercier caviar stick! If you aren’t used to doing fancy eye makeup this is not the time to try it out. Go for something simple, you’ll look lovely and polished and still like yourself, which is ultimately best anyway!
No Face
I think you’d get more bang for your buck with simple eyeliner and a bold lip color. Much easier for a novice.
The resident makeup experts may be able to get you better advice about a palette if you describe your coloring and eye shape.
Anon
I like this idea. Maybe add Chanel Ombré Premiere Longwear Creme Eyeshadow in whichever shade is closest to nude for you. It’s in a little pot and quite sheer. Use your finger to sweep you eyelid with the lightest of coats for a very discrete shimmer that will l open your eye area without looking sparkly.
Bbanon
I like the smashbox eyeshadow trio. & there’s lots of tutorials for applying three shades (with the lightest as an all over base, the medium on on the lids only, and the darker one in the crease). Maybe one color on the lids is all you need if you really want to simplify things, but I think the 3 shades elevate it. Of course you could use any pallet, but google how to apply 3 shades of eye makeup & see what you think.
Anon
I think the Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte palette is great for this.
For technique, you really just need a flat, but not super wide shadow brush (something like the Sephora shadow brush no. 14). I use one of the lightest colors in the palette (usually the second one on the first column) on my entire lid (from lash line to eyebrow) and then one of the darker ones (any of the four in the bottom right corner quad) on the crease. For doing the crease, I put the darker shadow just on the tip of the brush, close my eye, put the brush right at the point where my eyelid creases when I open my eye; then open the eye a little, but not fully/wide, and gently brush back and forth on the crease while the eye is slightly open. Black liner and a couple coats of black mascara. You can also dab a little shimmery shadow or highlighter right at your brow to finish.
Anon
I bought a palette from FLEKK that seems to work pretty well and has a handy guide on the cover. Not sure if it will come in time.
HFB
i think you would actually get the most out of hiring a makeup artist at a salon for this, especially if you aren’t going to use the palette again anytime soon. the MUA will have all the primers and brushes and setting spray and stuff to really make it look right; buying all that stuff can be pretty pricey and add up to the cost of having an MUA just do it. that’s assuming you won’t use the stuff again/before it dries up of course.
HFB
ps- in Boston suburbs, got a nice face if makeup done for a gala for about $80 including tip.
Anon
I don’t want to discourage you, but you should just stick to basics for a fancy event if you don’t know what you’re doing. A single shimmery eyeshadow in a complementary light to medium tone plus eyeliner and dark mascara will definitely give a fancier wow look, especially if you normally wear no eye makeup.
Trixie
Lipstick. A bright or bold color will light up your face. Lots of mascara, do your brows, skip the eyeshadow and liner if you are not used to doing those.
Anonymous
For a tutorial – look at Lisa Eldridge on youtbe – her video’s are great.
You can go a LONG way with black mascara, a smudgy kohl (Urban decay is great), and a dark grey or brown (whatever you think suits your coloring) shade with shimmer, and a cream or white-ish shimmer. And do your brows (Benefit is great – get a cold color if you don’t know what works for you – ash for blonde and dark brown for darker, either a brow mascara or stick thingy).
1 Do your brows.
2 Put on the lighter shade on your whole eye lid towards brows area – including in the dip by the nose, go all the way up to your brows.
3 Put on the darker shade on most of the lid, say 2/3 of the lid towards the outer bit.
4 Blend the two shadows a little.
5 Put the kohl on the upper lid, follow the lash line.
6 Smudge kohl with your finger
7 Mascara

For YouTube videos, check out Emily Noel. Also Julie Dawn Olsen. She doesn’t post anymore, but has a lot of tutorials using drugstore products. Or just search for “beginner eye makeup tutorial”.
Anon
I love makeup tutorials online. Angie from Hot and Flashy does some good YouTubes on this.
Anon
And Hannah Martin on Instagram has a few good Smokey eye tutorials. You’ll need a palette that has both dark and light colors + a shimmer – you can find this easily in most lines, I’m partial to NARS – and you can do a bronzey color or the classic black/grey palette.
Two brushes – a flat lay down brush for the shadow on the lid, and a fluffy crease brush you use in a windshield wiper motion in the crease.
I’d do a longwear pencil eyeliner with this in dark brown or black. Bobbi Brown’s are very nice.
It’s generally dramatic eyes or dramatic lips, but not both. I personally like a darker lip so I’d do a well defined but not Smokey eye and a red or plum lip. If you want to splash out, Chanel has gorgeous lipsticks for this, but Mac makes super iconic dark lipsticks like Ruby Woo at a much easier on the wallet price point.
Enjoy!

…like the military, walking with a 25 lb pack on your back? I mean, I did it for 6 years in the Army. It was my favorite form of PT because it was the easiest. I think I made a blunder at work…looking for advice on how to handle. Last week I received an invite from my great grandboss (who is in the C-Suite) to attend a local sporting event with my departments leadership team. The recipients of the email were BCCed and it started “hello all” so I assumed this was a department-wide email (which is not abnormal) and did not respond, as I had happy hour plans on the date of the event with coworkers, am not a big sports person, and didn’t really see the point of “mingling with the LT” if there were going to be 50+ people there. I started to realize I was mistaken earlier this week when great grandboss’ admin pinged me to ask whether I could attend. I said unfortunately I had a conflict, but started wondering if this was a more exclusive invite. I asked a coworker about it today, and she said she had not been invited to the sporting event. So, long story short, I think I was on a list of “top talent” to have the opportunity to mingle with our leadership team, and I essentially blew them off.
Is this a big deal? Do I explain to the admin that I misunderstood, or try to see if there is still a spot available? I really am excited to go to the happy hour I have planned, which is with coworkers who are peers/slightly above me – we’ve had it in the calendar for over a month. But, I kind of feel like an idiot for declining this invite.
anon
I would try and go. You have an admin checking in to see if you can come so I think it should be a priority.
No Face
Prioritize meeting with the leadership team, even in the future when the event is 50+ people. Reach out to the admin and say that you are now able to attend and would love to if possible.

Just contact the admin and say your plans have changed and you’d like to attend if still possible. Easy peasy!

Email the admin asap and say you were able to rearrange your plans in order to attend! Always attend these types of events! I was invited to a last minute dinner at 4:30 for 6:30 and I immediately jumped in the shower to attend!

Adidas athleisure is stalking me on social. A lot of it is cute! Any recommendations? Good for curvy hips / thighs? Or more of a straight shape? I usually get Athleta / ON but like their colors / patterns to mix things up. And I’ve started running, so this may motivate me a bit :) I hate Nike (Alyson Felix was done so wrong by them), so if there anything like that going on with Adidas, I’d avoid even if cute.

Yeah Adidas seems worse than Nike to me. The way they handled the Kanye situation was abhorrent.

I don’t know about Adidas, but I definitely agree with you about Nike! I already knew about the pregnancy discrimination thing and avoided them because of it, but I just read Kara Goucher’s new book with even more details about her time training with the Nike Oregon Project and how bad it was, and now it just makes me feel sick to see Nike advertising to women. It’s a good book, though, if you want running inspiration.
