Gift Ideas: Chess Set

This chess set caught my eye recently and it just seemed like it was really fun gift idea. I like the different colors and shapes, as well as the fact that it's a very feminine, modern take on an ancient game. (I also think it would be great as a possible office decor item so long as your office doesn't get too dusty!) The set is $160 at Urban Outfitters. Acrylic Chess

Looking for a more affordable set? Try this glass chess set for $35. This pink set or this more subdued acrylic set are also great.

  1. Where can I shop for a 12-year-old girl who wears a kids’ size 8-10 but likes the aesthetic of Madewell and Free People? Right now my only source is the big girls’ section at Nordstrom.

  2. Going on this morning’s slip thread – what’s your secret frumpy secret? Mine: I wear crocs as slippers around the house (the fug ones) and prefer granny panties…

    1. I wear ugly (purple) Crocs around the house, too! They are so comfortable, though. Also, I have some white underwear with a blue tinge because some new dark-wash jeans transferred dye to them at some point, but I haven’t thrown them away because they’re perfectly fine otherwise…

    2. Wearing Crocs around the house cured my plantar fasciitis. I won’t wear them out in public, but they really made a difference vs. going barefoot.

I don’t have granny panties per se, but I definitely prefer underpants with coverage. I think the kind I get are usually billed as high-cut briefs, but they are not that high cut (but a little higher than the GPs).

      1. Yeah I only wear sexy underwear if someone is going to see it. All my regular undies are boring full-coverage briefs.

        1. Agree on the underwear issue. I abhor thongs. If you’ll excuse me, I’m off to go give my pearls their daily clutching. ;)

        2. Me too. I do not wear any sexy underwear any more b/c I have NOT found a guy to show off my body too. Sheketovits used to love it when I wore my floral nightie, and it didn’t stay on for more then 2 minutes after I got into bed. But now, I prefer flannel, which is warm b/c I no longer have Sheketovits to keep me warm. By the way, has anyone in the HIVE watched the movie on Showtime called Escape from Dannamora? It is very interesting, but the woman who was haveing s-x with the prisoner, Inmate Sweat, was gross, but the thought of Inmate Sweat huffeing and puffing on top of me in a prison office is even more gross! DOUBEL FOOEY!

    3. I still wear two of the pairs of sweatpants that I bought from Walmart when I was pregnant (after I put on 50 pounds that I’ve since lost). They are huge on me but unbelievably comfortable.

    4. I love hot rollers and sometimes wear my slippers to walk the dog. Also, I have (and wear daily) a dressing gown :). Cooler than a robe but lets me take my time getting dressed without putting on “real” clothes.

  3. Anyone have experience with 3-day transfer vs. 5-day transfer with IVF? I messaged my clinic to ask about it but haven’t heard back yet and want to be informed. I’m not expected to get very many embryos, so my understanding is a lot of clinics would do the former, but it has not been mentioned to me as an option.

    1. 5 day transfers seem to be the norm now. 3 day is an outdated protocol from my my doctor told me/i read on the internet.

Good luck! I am pulling for you.

      1. Thanks. A friend recently had success with a 3-day transfer, so I started wondering if I should be considering it. I heard from my clinic that they don’t do them and don’t believe the research supports them, so I’ll plan to trust their expertise.

    2. I had 3 day transfers 11 and 6 years ago. I had very few embryos both times though, so it was kind of a decision to transfer them while they were still viable.

  4. Where are your favorite spots for prescription sunglasses? It’s not clear that Warby does dark lenses, just those yucky transition lenses

    1. Warby Parker made my prescription sunglasses this past summer, even nailing my progressive lenses. Love them!

    2. I’ve had good luck with 39DollarGlasses for sunglasses.
I used to use EyeBuyDirect, but their sunglasses aren’t dark enough. I still get cheap regular glasses from there, though. I like having options.
