For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. Reiss is having some amazing sales (including this former Suit of the Week pick). This salmon pink suit is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm kind of loving it — it strikes me as a lot more grown up than an all-pink suit would be, almost like a chic version of beige. I like it as styled here with white and gray; for some reason I also think this particular color might look nice with royal blue. There are, of course, limited sizes only, but pretty good discounts: the blazer (San-Tor Seamed One Button Jacket Salmon) was $360, now $216; the skirt (Tan-Tor Seamed Pencil Skirt) was $180, now $108; the pants (Lily-Tor Seamed Straight Leg Pant) was $210, now $126, and the dress (Justine-Tor Seamed Formal Dress) was $320 now $224. (And no, I have no ideas why all the names sound like they're from planet Krypton.)Sales of note for 9.10.24

Normally I don’t like suits in out-of-the-box colors, but this is beautiful.
AIMS
Agreed. Not sure it would look as awesome on me, but I love it as pictured.
Cb
Gorgeous, right? And each of the pieces would be nice on their own.
eek
Olivia, you would look gorgeous in this suit. Truth.

Thanks! I think it compliments my skin tone, but I prefer light grey suits. ;)

Maybe next season when Olivia is the story :)

This color would look horrible on me but I love the cut of every single piece.
Baconpancakes
Same. The color would wash me out, as shown on the blonde model, but it’s just a beautiful suit.
Lyssa
I definitely would not care for it on myself (and dislike it on the model), but I think that it would be striking on a very dark skinned woman.

OMG. Love. Wish I knew if this tan redhead could pull it off…

Was just told today that basically my job is going to last maybe another month or two. Then they won’t be able to justify my position (and will likely hire someone cheaper). This isn’t a surprise because I was hired by old management in a somewhat senior role, but new management, who came in about six months ago, is petty and dislikes old management and anyone from the ancien regime and has been making sure I don’t get any of the “good” work. So I’m expensive (relatively speaking) and affiliated with “those” people, so out I go. I was looking anyway, but the job market is still not great and I have a niche-y sort of skill set. Also, I carry our health insurance and earn about 3/4 of the household income. Bummer.
KLG
So sorry to hear that. Good luck.
Hollis
Bummer! If they are talking about giving you severance, perhaps you should ask to stay in your office/job for those weeks instead, because it’s easier to find a job while you are still unemployed. I would start sending out resumes and crank up those efforts to contact people asap. Good luck!
eek
Definte bummer. I hope you are just doing mindless things tonight and refocus on finding a new job tomorrow! Hang in there.
SA
Are you me? I have nearly the same thing going on. I’m so sorry, it’s stressful. On a positive note though I think the job market is coming back. I’ve had a bunch of interviews, just not something perfect.
anon
So sorry to hear that. I second the remark that the job market is improving. I had to find a new job, and it took me far less time and far fewer interviews/applications than I expected. Hopefully the same is true for your industry. Good luck!

Damn, Reiss has some pretty things on sale. I can think of at least a half-dozen, “ooh-want that”s that I came across on their site. Sigh, no more spending for me for now.

Cat Adoption help?
I decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to start seriously looking on adoption sites for a cat. I found the perfect one, visited her last night, and want to go through with the adoption. One (big?) problem: I’m going out of town this Friday-Sunday. It will be less than 48 hours total. Any suggestions for how to handle this? I am in the Northern VA area if anyone has local suggestions.
CKB
Not sure I would do this for a new to the house cat but we leave our kitty alone for 2 or 3 nights fairly regularly. Clean the litter box really well before we go, leave lots of food & water out & he’s always been just fine. Very happy to see us when we get home, but totally fine.
Cat Adoption help?
My Mom does this with her cat, I’m just wondering if it would work with a new cat because we aren’t sure of her food preferences and won’t be around if anything goes wrong…
TBK
What about a pet sitter? Or a friend who could come look in on the cat?
AIMS
Is this an agency adoption or a private adoption? Can you explain the situation and that it’s a pre-planned trip and see if they will let you pick up the kitty on Monday?
Cat Adoption help?
It’s a pound, government run, and the cat is being fostered at a local vet. I am definitely going to ask when they call me back tonight regarding paperwork, but I want a back up plan in case they cannot hold her over the weekend. This is definitely part of my plan, though!
AIMS
I think boarding the cat or leaving her alone when you first get her is a little mean, honestly, because she will already be under some stress from being in a new environment. I am sure that you can work something out with the local vet where she is currently being fostered. Maybe you can pay for them to “board” her there a few more days.
Anonymous
+1. They are sensitive animals!
Nonny
+2 It isn’t fair to leave a cat alone when it is in a brand-new environment. Best to get the cat at a time when you can be there for a few days and help it feel comfortable and get in a new routine.
Trixie
Most vets will board for a fee so I’d be surprised if this wasn’t an option. Even though the vet is a little stressful in itself, at least it’s familiar and you’ll know kitty is safe.
Related: I had to leave for a weekend about 2 weeks after I got my kitties. I felt horribly guilty the entire time (they were pretty young). When I got back, I discovered that they were MORE than comfortable without me and have basically treated me like a houseguest / maid ever since. Cats!
Anonymous
I just adopted a kitty in NoVa too!
Can you see if the vet she’s at right now can board her until you get back? That way there’s no trauma to her. You may have to pay, but infinitely better than leaving her alone!
If you do have to leave her, make sure you confine her to a limited space so she can’t get hurt/too curious and have someone check in on her.
AnonBK
You could look into boarding the cat for the 2 nights.
NoVa cats
I think Time for a Walk does pet sitting for cats and other pets. We use them for dog walking and really like them. And lots of vets board. We go to Cherrydale Vet Clinic on Lee Highway in Arlington (Cherrydale, obvs), and they do some boarding. We’ve also been to Suburban Animal Hospital in Falls Church, and I know they do cat boarding too.
Cat Adoption Help?
Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I am going to follow up with the vet office, and I suspect they will let me pay for a few more days of boarding. It’s definitely better to put out the money now to hopefully have a loving and playful cat for a long time!
Lola
Please don’t leave kitty alone without you. When we got our kittens, one of them got stuck behind a cabinet the first or second night during her house exploration and I had to get her out. What if your kitty gets stuck somewhere and you’re not there to help!! If you can’t board her where she is, then board her somewhere else. Still stressful but she’ll get over it. Worse if something goes wrong in your house and you’re not there for her.
anon
Always There Pet Care has a cat boarding facility in Falls Church and I cannot recommend them highly enough. They are wonderful. Even provide pet pickup and dropoff for a reasonable price.
Anonymous
There are a ton of petsitting businesses in NoVA. My street alone has five businesses for pet daycare, grooming, and boarding. Yelp should have suggestions, and the Washingtonian is filled with ads. If they are coming to your home, I recommend getting someone who is bonded.

I’ve been on 3 dates with a guy, and I’m already planning the wedding. Like, down to what his mom will probably wear. Which, obviously crazy. But how do I put the mental breaks on when it’s so much fun? (she wears bright rose, in case you were wondering)

I just watched a hilarious clip from Inside Amy Schumer last night on Comedy Central about this…ahem…past time. She has a funny bit about this.

Ha I saw this last night too. I like the porn from the women’s perspective.
me too!
I have no idea. I’m 2 months in and spending way too much time on A Practical Wedding (and I am not a “I’ve been planning me wedding since I was 5” girl). My mom tells me to not take it so seriously because it’s too early to know–and I get tears in my eyes.
In the meantime, I’ve been telling myself to enjoy this time–it’s (hopefully) the last time I go through the early-dating time (honeymoon phase) with a guy. It’s my last set of “firsts”–first kiss, first sleepover, first car-trip, first meeting-his-family, etc. It kind of becomes bittersweet and precious.
Calico
I know what you mean about the “last set of firsts.” For me, I can’t bear the idea of telling all of my crazy family stories again. So exhausting. After nearly two decades of dating I’m hoping this one sticks!

Ha, I’m so there! Luckily my SO is too so we squee over wedding stuff together. Keep reminding myself that I’m not getting a degree in Pinterest.

I’m no help. I’ve been working on my wedding plans for a year and 4 months; we’ve been dating a year and five.

I’m not dating anyone at all, and I recently wasted time on a Thursday night looking up local wedding venues (because, you know, you have to book these places early… like before you’ve even found a person to marry!). So, no advice, but you’re hardly the only one.

I still look at wedding dresses on line sometimes–and I’ve been married for seven years. So no judgment here!

That is a big part of why I don’t date–it’s fun for me to throw myself into it like that, but would not be fair to my son. (And honestly, I go so overboard that the negatives from breakups affect my career almost as much as the positives of having a good partner would)

I have to give a shout out to NineWest.com They will price adjust for you! I finally found a pair of nude peep-toe flats…. and then they went on sale for $10 less than what I’d paid. The customer service rep on the phone was helpful, no questions asked. The whole call took less than 5 minutes.
They’re also running a good 50% sale right now, with free shipping (and if you have ShopRunner, free returns!)
NOLA
Yeah, I discovered that recently, too. I had ordered a pair of wedges full price and then they had the friends & family sale. The person I spoke to said that usually the price adjustment only applies to things that are on sale permanently, but she did it for me anyway since I’d never asked before. It was a nice surprise!
Arlington Psychiatrist Recommendation?
sorry for the repost:
does anyone have a recommendation for a psychiatrist that accepts BC/BS insurance in Arlington, VA ? I’ve been seeing a therapist that has recommended I get screened for depression and mild anxiety. I’m also looking at my insurance company’s website. Thank you.
KLG
I don’t, but try calling the Women’s Center in Vienna, VA or DC to ask for a rec. A therapist there gave me a good rec for one in Fairfax but they might know someone in Arlington as well. Did your therapist have any recommendations? That’s usually the best way to go since they’ve been working with you.

I have a wedding coming up in a few weeks. It’s at a pretty university chapel in a major city at 4PM, and the reception follows at a gorgeous castle. I searched on Google Images for pictures of the venue and it’s pretty fancy. Definitely cocktail attire.
I bought the Mad Men Betty dress in hot pink from Banana Republic last summer and haven’t gotten to wear it. If you search for the dress, I look somewhat like the model in the original ad, minus probably 6 inches of height and several degrees of hotness (hah). I’m a little taller than the woman in this blog and a brunette but it shows fit of the dress well:
http://pennilesssocialite.blogspot.com/2012/03/banana-republic-mad-men-collection.html
Think it would work? I would probably wear light pink patent pumps (more nude for me than pink). I tried black peep toes on but they looked heavy. I would probably add pearls and silver jewelry. You could convince me to buy something else, or I have plenty of other dresses I could wear. I’m just trying to justify last year’s $75 purchase. It’s very fun but I shouldn’t have kept it. It’s a lot of dress.
anon
I think the Betty dress in hot pink would be totally appropriate, and very fun. Go for it!

I agree. You are empoered to be whatever you want to be, my mom say’s. Dad say’s that with a college or law degree, you can look great in anything! Dad was here today for another set of interview’s with the staff, and he is learning alot about the firm. The manageing partner is getting a little antsey about dad noseing around so much, but dad is doieng it to be sure I know what I am getting into if he let’s me be a PARTNER. YAY! I need to be a partner to get MARRIED and have a child. FOOEY if that fall’s thru b/c Grandma Leyeh is sticking to her offer that I have a child, but NOT out of WEDLOCK. She is “of the old school ” say’s dad, b/c she does NOT want me to get impregneated without a ring on my finger. YAY!

If you can’t wear that dress to a fancy wedding, when CAN you wear it?
Jay
Absolutely! Gorgeous dress, styling sounds great. Have fun!
LR
Alright, you guys convinced me. Thanks! I’ll report back. :)
If anyone has specific thoughts on styling, please share. I need all the help I can get. I’m thinking hair down, nude shoes, but I’m not sold on the pearls. It might be pushing the 50s vibe too far.
AIMS
I’d skip the pearls to avoid being costume-y but otherwise it sounds perfect. I like the way it’s styled in this picture. http://luxurist.blogspot.com/2012/03/janie-bryant-springs-her-second-mad-men.html

Good call! I don’t have a necklace like that…off to hunt. Maybe navy and silver?
Pat
I love it! Wear it!
Gus
You may just be able to see a general practioner for this. Most GPs are comfortable dealing with the relatively straightforward mental health issues like depression and anxiety, and can talk with you about whether anti-depressants might be of use to you (and write the prescriptions if so).
Arlington Psychiatrist Recommendation?
Therapist recommended going to a psychiatrist, though. but thanks!
Gus
Yeah, but that may in part be because they’re all part of the same mental health gang, as it were. People who are themselves specialists tend to think that if they can’t do something, some other specialist will need to be called in, but in fact, sometimes a generalist is just fine.

Travel TJ! I am traveling to New Orleans for the first time in November, for a wedding. The wedding will be on Barron street, between Canal and Common. A few people I have talked to are staying at the Renaissance New Orleans Pere Marquette Hotel…but some of the reviews worry me. I’m not super picky about hotels, but it has to be clean. The reception is at the Le Pavillion. It sounds like we’ll be spending a lot of time in the French Quarter.
There is a Ritz, but too pricey for me for that weekend (it is $400 on up). I’m ok to spend around $250 a night, and really I’m just looking for clean and reasonably quiet.
Does anyone have any favorites?
NOLA
No hotel recs but just to say that’s right across the street from the Quarter. Maybe check out the Cotton Exchange. That’s where Deep End and her bridal party are staying. There are some other small hotels on the CBD side of Canal that would be nice.
NOLA
Oh and International House could be a good choice. It’s in the CBD as well. A small hotel but very nice.
Deep End
I’m optimistic about the Cotton Exchange, though it doesn’t have great reviews. It was the only FQ hotel I could get a room block on for the weekend of our wedding (which is also the weekend of July 4th and Essence Festival). Lesson learned, never get married on a holiday weekend.:)

I stayed at Hotel Mazarin last time I was there and liked it. The hotel and the rooms are really cute, the free breakfast is good, and the wine bar in the hotel is a nice place to hang out. I didn’t have any noise from Bourbon Street but there was some noise from people coming back to their rooms at night. The middle of the hotel is an open courtyard, which is lovely, but noise carries.

When we visited a few years ago, we stayed at the Auld Sweet Olive B and B (http://sweetolive.com/)–really cute, good breakfasts, and easy parking.

royal sonesta. just stayed there about 6 weeks ago. perfect location, and generally a little less than the ritz. my rooms were close to that rate i think
Darby
I love the Soniat house. It’s in the Quarter, close to where you’ll be & lovely. Rates vary depending on what else is going on, but it tends to be on the reasonable side (250/275/night). It’s a very NOLA place to stay.
Darby
PS – I used to live in NOLA & this is where I stay if I’m not staying with friends.
Lilly
Second NOLA’s rec for International House Hotel and add the Monteleone.
j
I stayed at the Royal Sonesta in December and really enjoyed it. Also stayed at Le Pavilion and the Windsor Court, both of which were very nice but lacked the personality I liked in the Roal Sonesta. Have fun, eat at Brigtsens!
Plan B
A second for the Monteleone. I’ve stayed here a couple of times and like it a lot.
Pancakes
The Marriott on Canal in the quarter is very nice. Great, huge lobby too, with a good bar.
If you’re looking for something cheaper but still clean and not far off the path, the Hilton Garden Inn on Gravier is totally fine. Had a good experience there.
Obviously neither of these have as much character as Monteleone or The Roosevelt, but still solid choices.
What a difference two weeks makes
Two weeks ago, I had just found out I was pregnant and I couldn’t remember not to eat soft cheeses and deli meat. Two weeks later, I’m so nauseous on a constant basis I couldn’t forget I was pregnant for a single minute of the day and I can’t stand the thought of any food. No advice needed, just complaining anonymously.
Lyssa
Congratulations! Just wait until you’re 2 weeks post-being pregnant and you find yourself forgetting that you don’t have to move your belly out of the way anymore and absent-mindedly touching it to feel the baby move, then remembering that, “oh, yeah, I can just go touch the baby directly.” :)
Pregomama
Or when you’re 3 months from delivering and you’ve given up no the deli meat ban because while you tried your best for the first trimester and well into the second, something has to give. And that something is turkey sandwiches. Listeria be damned.
Nonny
Yup, I was there a month and a half ago! I hope you aren’t nauseous forever – I just hit 12 weeks and I am now inconsistently nauseous rather than constantly nauseous. For now, just eat what you can, try to stay hydrated and if you can’t stand the nausea, ask your doctor for a Diclectin prescription. Seriously. It helps.
What a difference two weeks makes
I’ve read about Diclectin, but I’m very wary of taking drugs while pregnant. I don’t think I trust the pharmaceutical industry enough.
I have tried everything, though and nothing has worked. (Ginger, ginger ale, lemon drops, lemonade, sea sickness bands). Not throwing up, just constant nausea and aversion to all food.
anne-on
They’ve recently released studies that show that Zofran is safer than the unisom-b6 combo. However, for me, zofran literally only stopped the vomitting, not the nausea. At htat point thought I’d lost so much weight just being able to force food down and not have it come back up was a step forward.
victoria
Zofran’s category B now, and Unisom is category A. Both are considered safe, but I don’t think you can necessarily say that Zofran is safer than Unisom.
I had HG also (I lost 20% of my pre-pregnancy body weight). For me Zofran and Reglan didn’t do too much — I too found that it helped a little with the vomiting but not the nausea. Unisom turned out to be a miracle drug for me, but it doesn’t work for everyone…
victoria
You actually don’t need a prescription for diclectin. It’s the same medication as in Unisom plus vitamin B-6. There’s no specific benefit to taking them in one tablet. It’s a category A drug during pregnancy, which means there has been lots and lots of research on it showing no issues.
Not trying to convince you one way or the other to medicate or not medicate, but there you go :).
CKB
Vit B6 saved my sanity during my last pg. it really helped take off the edge of the all day sickness that lasted most of the pg. it took a couple of days to kick in, but I really noticed a difference. And it’s a water soluble vitamin so you just pee away what your body doesn’t use. And then on those really bad days Jolly Rancher hard candies really helped.
I didn’t have hypermesis gravida, or whatever it’s called. Not even close. But I did throw up most mornings & felt nauseous all day, for reference. Good luck!
Bizzyb
7 weeks here. Not too much nausea, but definitely food aversions. I spent the last two weeks living on pretzels and string cheese. I’m a woman with a pretty hearty appetite, so it’s been odd. Most meat sounds really gross, unless it’s served cold. As of yesterday, though, I want to eat ALL THE VEGGIES.
One day when I was feeling a little nauseous and dizzy, a coworker brought me a (regular) Coke, which she said was the only thing that had helped her with morning sickness. It did settle things.

Might be too late for today but –
Today one of the other managers (not my boss) asked me to see if any of my classmates would be a good fit/interested in interning with her. If I give him people’s names, or f people email him saying I told them about the position, am I recommending them?
I can’t really recommend anyone, but I can connect her with ppl who it certain qualifications (degree, field, etc)
Godzilla
If you give them someone’s name, you are recommending those people. Or you can be clear and say – I’ve never worked with this person but I saw him/her in my 500-student lecture class.
You can also ask for a written job description and application deadline from this manager so that you can just forward it to all of your contacts and tell them to forward it as well. That way, the responsibility is off you and you look like a good sport.
Intern
Also, should I tell the people to email her themselves, or should I email her a list of all the names or something else?
I am a banana.
Any person you recommend will be a reflection on you. I didn’t realize this when I did it once . . . and I regretted it when the person I recommended showed up late to the interview and generally didn’t show interest.

Agreed. I didn’t realize this either, and it came back to haunt me. Don’t give any names unless you know their background and personality and believe they would be a strong fit.

Hi! This is my first time posting after finding the site when researching interview attire for my first interview after 15yrs of staying home. Now I have the job and I’m struggling with what to wear everyday. My last position in sales was 20yrs ago as a pharmaceutical rep. My current position is a distributor rep for a flooring manufacturer. I have the largest accounts in my market and I need to dress more professionally when calling on them. I also handle display updates which leaves me drenched in perspiration some days! They are heavy, dusty, with ragged edges, etc. I bought a few pantsuits, but in St. Louis in the summer the jacket is really just a prop. I’ve seen a couple of other female reps (fairly rare) who are 15-20 years my junior and they often dress in cute summer skirts with short sleeved tops and bare legs or lightweight pants and a cute top. I read here about tops that are great to wear under a jacket, but I need tops that are appropriate for wearing without a jacket. Like many 50 somethings I’m not crazy about bearing my arms and my legs, but I guess I’ll just need to get over it. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (FYI: I’m typically a size 2-4 petite, but wear a 34 C-D bra, so that affects the tops that are flattering as well) Thanks!
Lady Harriet
Welcome! You may want to try reposting this tomorrow morning–not to many people check this site later in the day, so you’ll be able to get more help then.
I find that if I’m not wearing a jacket I need a top that’s dressier and I need to tuck it in. So I can’t usually get away with a plain knit top like I might wear with a jacket or cardigan. Button-ups may or may not work, depending on your figure. You should definitely get professionally fitted for a bra from a shop that carries a wide variety of sizes (NOT Victoria’s Secret!) I get mine from a small local specialty shop, but I know a lot of the ladies here like Nordstrom’s too. I may be wrong, but just based on the clothing size you wear it sounds like you might need a smaller band/larger cup in your bras. (For reference, I’m around a size 10-12 now and wear a 32 band. When I wore a 34, I was more like a 14.) The right bra size will make all your clothes fit better.

You should repost this tomorrow so that more people can see and comment! Also, yay St. Louis!
Are you comfortable in dresses? If so, a wrap dress, faux wrap dress, shift dress, or sheath dress with sleeves could be good. Heels and an appropriate necklace can dress up the look if you’re concerned about being too casual. You could also carry a jacket with you if you want to look more formal for the presentation. Picking a dress in a breathable fabric can help you with the humidity that we have here. The dresses at Land’s End are highly recommended by commenters here.
As far as shirts go, how about looser button front shirts on top of lightweight pants? (Link to follow). For tops, I honestly just go to high-end thrift stores and buy up whatever tops fit me well. I love Rung on Manchester (in the Rock Hill area). Occasionally, I find things that I like at ScholarShop (across from the Galleria, on Clayton Rd).

Thank you for the replies. I will post it again tomorrow. Great idea. I should have also mentioned that all I have purchased are button down long sleeve shirts and plain knit tops, partially because they were recommended here. I’m trying to find an alternative to the button down because it is stiff feeling, makes the jacket snugger, is hot and makes me look like I am not dressed for the weather, etc. That is why I purchased the plain knit tops after reading about that suggestion on Corporette. The problem with them is that they seem too casual and plain when the jacket is removed. So any other ideas? As to the bra, I find that I wear different sizes in different bras. I just purchased a size 34C but previously have worn size 36C or 34D. The 34C is the smallest I have worn and fits only on the last hooks (loosest), but I’m not concerned because I know it will stretch. Thanks again!

+1 for cheering St. Louis (I was born there).
Theresa, good luck with the new job and with looking crisp in the St. Louis summer, and congratulations on resuming formal employment after 15 years of being _and_ working at home. No style suggestions, but I wanted to pass along an idea I read somewhere about staying cool: Carry a frozen washcloth! The night before, wet it, wring it out, and stick it into the freezer inside a plastic zip bag. The next day use it to cool your wrists, back of neck, or face–if you don’t wear a lot of makeup.
Olivia Pope, thank you for the thrift shop recommendations. I’ll try to visit them–although my St. Louis visits tend to be heavily scheduled with family events.

Ditto, Theresa. FWIW, just purchased a cooling cloth that’s supposed to stay cool for hours. Can’t recall where I purchased it, but the brand is Magic Cool. HTH and good luck to you!

No advice, just sympathy. I am an East Coaster who travels to St. Louis pretty often for business. I STILL can’t figure out how to get from my hotel to my office (3 blocks, max) without showing up drenched in sweat. And that’s my fairly casual office, to which I can wear open toed shoes and lightweight dresses!
Most of the folks in the office drive and walk directly from the parking garage to the office, so they manage to keep it together. Last time I was there it was about 95 degrees, humid, and had INCREDIBLE winds.

Just looking for some internet hugs. My son’s very absent father called today, something about the child support payments. I don’t really know what the problem that he’s in trouble for is; the checks are too small to make much of a difference anyway (around the order of $95/month) BUT what he said did matter. He asked how school is going. I told him that it’s summer vacation, so no school but kid has done x and y camps and is playing chess with me. Then he asked what grade he’s in, repeated what I said to make sure he had it right. When we got off the phone, I cried. Poor son was there trying to cheer me up, and he’s who I was crying for. I feel like such a failure, having given him such an awful father, and I hurt for him.

My dad’s a jerk, and my mom is awesome, and I consider myself lucky to have such a great mom, and that she raised me strong enough to know that I don’t need to keep jerks around in my life. You don’t sound like a failure at all, to me. It sounds like you already raised your baby boy to be compassionate, caring, and empathetic, which are the hardest qualities to teach. Keep up the good work, mom!

And your kid is going to multiple camps and already playing chess in addition to being a great guy? Yeah. Uhm. You haven’t failed at all. Hugs for being awesome.

My mom once apologized for not picking a better dad for me, but then she pointed out that if he hadn’t been my dad, I wouldn’t have been me. So look, you wouldn’t have gotten your kid with a different dad. He sounds like a great kid and even if his dad isn’t great at being a dad, it sounds like he provided some good genes. Will he miss having a more involved dad at points in his life? Sure. But we all have things we miss. What’s important is that he has someone in his life who loves him with all her heart, and it sounds like he got that. He’ll be okay.

I’m sorry your son’s dad didn’t even know what grade he was in, that must have been really tough to hear. But it sounds like your son is doing very well without having his dad around and it might be less chaotic for your son that way. My stepdaughter’s mom is very present in her life and causes a lot of problems for my stepdaughter because she is generally very immature, has gotten into physical fights in front of my stepdaughter (which have resulted in the cops being at their house twice in the last 16 months), and treats stepdaughter like a friend and not a child. However, my stepdaughter adores her and we are pretty sure she would self destruct if we took her away from mom and so far her therapist agrees. Sometimes I think stepdaughter would be better off if her mom were absent.
It sounds like you’re a great mom and I’m sure your son doesn’t think you’re a failure in any way and probably thinks his family is complete just as it is.

Hugs hugs hugs! It sounds like you are doing all the right things for your son. He is lucky to have a stable, loving mom.

I need help with finding sandals. Most sandals are too narrow in the toe box for me, so it looks like my foot is consuming the shoe. Although I have a wider forefoot, I have a narrower heel, so I can’t buy a wide width shoe (not that there’s much choice in that department anyway).
Does anyone have any suggestions for a brand/even specific shoe that will work for me?
I’ve had good luck with some Target/Old Navy/Nine West, but I’d really like a nice (leather, if possible) sandal…not one I’m going to have to replace quickly because it’s lower quality and falling apart.
P.S. If you have any work-worthy pump suggestions, I’ll take ’em too!
