I'm always a fan of the sedate but interestingly-colored suit — and this is a great one from Brooks Brothers.

I like the darts on the jacket, as well as the wide neck on the matching sheath dress (although it looks like there are some fit issues with the model). I'm not a fan of the pleats on the straight wool pants, but that's me — and the pencil skirt looks great.

    Random but does anyone use the Peloton app for Roku? If so, is there a way to turn off the playlists/music? I could barely hear the instructor over the loud, distracting music when I did a core workout yesterday, but I can’t seem to find a way to turn it off and Googling didn’t get me anywhere.

      No — music is one of the core selling points of Peloton, and they do not divorce the instructor’s feed from it.

        Ugh really? That’s too bad. It would be fine if I could turn it way down at least, but I couldn’t even hear the instructor’s directions over the blasting, which I really don’t need for a simple core workout.

          I use Fitness Blender. There’s no music, but once I get the hang of certain workouts I play my own music.

        Actually, that’s not totally true. On the bike, you can choose “more instructor” or “more music” on your volume options. Have not seen this on the app though.

          I briefly used Peloton on my computer, and remember that it had this feature. Maybe it is just not on the Roku app yet.

    Does anyone have a first-hand view of what’s happening outside the Capitol? The news is not keeping up with the snippets I just heard when a bunch of people left a call.

      I’m watching MSNBC’s live feed and it is crazy. Protesters are actually on balconies on the Capitol building and the Senate chamber was just cleared.

        May I just say if this isn’t an attempted coup, I don’t know what would be: egging on your supporters to literally storm the Capitol while they are trying to certify your opponent’s election. Good Lord.

          It is a coup attempt. We shouldn’t obfuscate that fact. Every word out of Trump’s mouth since Election Day has been leading to this moment and it’s incredibly terrifying.

            Plus, honestly, all the assurances on CNN that Biden/Harris will be the next President/VP are starting to feel like 2016 when the NYT and WaPo assured us all that Trump would never win. I would like to tune out and figure it would all shake out correctly, but I just don’t trust that it will, and if it all goes to hell I at least want to be watching it on TV. I work for a political .org, and there has been NO email traffic since 1:00 PM. We’re all working from home and I think all glued to the TV.

            I am 100%, insanely floored. The people proximate to and inside the capitol’s statutory hall having gone through no security checkpoints with both chambers inside, including the current VP and future VP. As one senator just said on TV you can’t take a hairbrush through security let alone flag poles and lord knows what else.

            Everyone in DC, please stay safe.

            I’m pretty sure Congress will certify the election results before January 20th, but if for some reason they don’t Nancy Pelosi would become Acting President. Trump and Pence are out at noon on the 20th even if Congress does nothing.

            Yes, Senior Attorney–you’ve seen alot, and I agree. This has turned out to be a day that will be both “the best of times” and the “worst of times”.

            The “best of times” is that Georgia elected 2 Democrats to the Senate — a Black reverend and a young (33) man, and in so doing, got rid of two Republicans. With the Senate now @50, our very own Senator Schumer will be the majority leader of the Senate. This will be so much different then having that Senator McConnell. Life will be better for all of us.

            But later, the “worst of times” refers to the rioting and breech of the Capitol Building by a bunch of lawlessness. I can safeley say that this day (January 6, 2021) is a day that will live in Infamy, much like December 7, 1941, when the President Rosevelt said it.

            I have been glued to the TV all afternoon, and I really did not care that the News coverage preemted Judge Judy on CBS. I listened about the Press talking impeachment, and invoking the 25th Amendment. It sounds very techical, and by the time they do that, Trump would be out of office anyway. I never thought we would get to this, but we should be ashamed of those people who went there to defile our democracy and break windows in the Capitol. Even President Bush said that this was the action of a Bannana Republic, not the USA, and I agree. I never saw any of this happen before in DC or anywhere else. TRIPEL FOOEY on all of this happening today.

        Me too. Even if Biden does ultimately get seated, this entire experience reflects incredibly badly on our country and has eroded any residual trust I still had in our republic.

          I’m watching a live feed that said something about a woman who smashed through some windows at the capitol and was shot by police. Obviously it’s a live-feed and no confirmed reports so take it with a grain of salt, but it is terrifying.

        I’m thinking about the tear gas and rubber bullets and real bullets that were fired at Black Lives Matter protesters this summer. This is horrifying.

          I agree. Clearly a true defensive responsible is possible – but our government prefers to hurt black people than to defend against a coup. Things will never be the same now.

          From NYT: “A Capitol Police officer tried to reason with the crowd: “You guys just need to go outside,” he pleaded with a man in a green backpack. When asked why they weren’t expelling the protesters, the officer said, “We’ve just got to let them do their thing now.””

          So armed vigilantes attempting a coup get to “do their thing” but black people can’t peacefully protest for civil rights. Got it.

            The Capitol Police in there are hugely outnumbered and outarmed. If they start shooting, the “protesters” will have an excuse to shoot them back and they will quickly all be dead and the “protesters” will still be in control of the building. This way they are buying time until reinforcements get there. Which they hopefully will soon…

            I’m really upset that there was no preparation for this, but I bet that all comes back to Trump, who is in charge of the National Guard deployment for DC.

            I will retract what I said then. I had not seen that but saw a video of a capitol police officer being chased by the terrorists inside the building. Apparently that was not representative. I’m really glad for everyone who reporting from inside the situation so we have a full picture of what’s going on.

      I don’t understand how there is so little security at the Capitol. Peaceful BLM protestors in my city were dealt with much more harshly by the city police.

          The Guard has now been called out. NYT is reporting the decision was made by DOD and the Army, but Kayleigh McEnany (sp?) says it is at Trump’s direction. Oh please, this rioting and violence were at Trump’s direction.

            Ilhan Omar is drawing up Articles of Impeachment. Trump is literally inciting violence and insurrection in the same sentence as telling the rioters to “go home”. This is f***ing insane, he needs to go NOW. Enough is enough is enough.

            Yes. If this is not the place to draw the line, then where? Too many of his actions have had no consequences. Today’s reckless, dangerous, and seditious behavior (and the months of lying and undermining of democratic processes that today’s events are inexorably linked with) cannot be one of them. If this is allowed to stand, then how is that not to be taken as permission for future similar acts?

      The entire DC National Guard has been called out, and Virgina is sending its National Guard and state troopers also.

      This is so incredibly shocking and disturbing to me, I haven’t been able to do anything but watch the coverage for the last hour.

      I just can’t get past the idea that IF they secure the capital and everyone is safe, half of congress is going to continue to pretend the election was illegitimate. Honestly, Ted Cruz and co. might as well smash the windows in along with the terrorists. That’s the side they’re on.

    I hate when stuff on my work to-do list is dependent upon other people. I work in software development and I keep getting asked about the status of software defect that needs to be fixed. One of the developers needs to work on it and I’ve asked him to send me status, but he’s not answering my IMs. I’m glad I’m WFH. One of my cats came over and tapped me on the leg, which means he wants cuddles. At least the kitty purrs to help with my irritation.

      I’m a PM in publishing. Not sure if it helps, but our team uses Jira ticketing and it has been amazing. I can add the defect owner on as a watcher. It helps them see where the progress is without me needing to pester the developer (or graphic designer or writer, etc.). I put status notes for every check-in meeting as part of the ticket as well so it’s all captured if things needed to be re-reprioritized. Doesn’t completely eliminate the IM status checks but has cut down substantially (and given folks better appreciation for all the work going on behind the scenes).

        We use Jira too for requirements. Unfortunately this is one of those situations where the issue has been escalated and multiple people are asking me for status on my TPS reports. Office Space is such an accurate representation of my workplace sometimes!

    Any anecdotes or books/essays on risk and reward?

    In 2020, as a salaried, non commission salesperson, with my bonus I made $200k. I got promoted this year to a commission role and although estimates are harder due to the unknown of eating what I kill, people in my role usually between $100k-1million (median is 400k, average is 500k).

    I just got a job offer at a company I’m familiar with that would hire me full time salaried at 350k. I expect to make 200-250k this year at my current job but expect I’d make more long term (depending on a lot of things, regulations etc). I think Job B would be fairly stable but it would be hard to go back to sales after too many years out. I’m struggling whether to take Job B – salary vs. busting my butt for a chance – and wanting some other perspectives. I love to read and plan to find some books this weekend so thought I’d ask for suggestions!

      I have no advice, but would love to know what you sell. Jumbo Jets? Missile systems? Sounds lucrative whichever way you go.

        I worry that it’s pharmaceuticals or medical devices. The amount of $ made here is staggering to me, and is one of the problems of our health care delivery system.

        I am hoping that Biden will finally address the problems we have with unreasonable drug prices, the skyrocketing cost of generics, and the lack of negotiating power of the Medicare to get better prices for the elderly population with high need.

        It doesn’t make sense that our universities/research institutes/hospitals and industries due the science that underlies most basic science leading to drug discovery and development, and pay for trials for most of the worlds drugs. And yet, we pay more to use them than anyone!

      i’m risk averse and don’t have the personality to be a salesperson and way too much anxiety to go with a commission based job, so i’d go with Job B, but that doesn’t mean it is the right thing to do, because ‘one person’s meat is another person’s poison.’

    I’m getting a mattress delivered on Saturday (“white glove” delivery). How much would you recommend tipping the delivery people? There will be a set of stairs and it’s for a twin XL mattress. TIA!

          I imagine it will only take 10 minutes or so. I’d do $20 total but certainly you can’t go wrong being generous in these trying times.

        +1, $20 total seems fine. My mom did $40 last week for white glove delivery of a TV (2 men) but I think that is more than necessary.

      I did $20 each for wrangling a new dresser up tight rowhouse stairs. For a mattress $10 each seems appropriate.

    Lawyers and legal-adjacent people, can you help me understand why Merrick Garland would want the AG job? It seems like his judgeship is an amazing perch, not to mention a lifetime gig. AG is going to be extremely busy, political, and relatively short-tenured. Of course it’s a great job with lots of opportunities to set policy, but from this non-lawyer it doesn’t seem worth giving up a lifetime appointment. Other thoughts? (For the record, I think he’s a great pick.)

      The Senate results opened the door for him. Otherwise Biden would not open up a judgeship since a Republican senate would not confirm his appointees. I know that’s not your question.

      I read a theory earlier today that it’s to open his DC circuit seat for Ketanji Brown Jackson (since we’ll actually be able to get decent judges confirmed!) as heir apparent for Breyer’s SCOTUS seat. So it’s maybe a long game play that Garland is willing to go along with?

        I think this makes sense, especially if Garland wants to retire in the next 10 years anyway. Plus, a cabinet position is a great way to end your career.

          I just googled, and he’s 68, so well within retirement range. Maybe he’ll do this for 4 to 8 years and then retire, and this way his seat will presumably go to a liberal jurist. It’s not like moving to AG is exactly a demotion! I’m bummed it isn’t Sally Yates, though, now that we could actually get her confirmed.

      I don’t get it either (IANAL). My pick would have been Doug Jones. I hope he has a place in the Biden administration since the people of AL made their unfortunate choice of a washed up football coach with no grasp of civics.

      I think people just like new challenges. His job is certainly extremely cushy but maybe he’s a little bored after 25 years and wants to do something new.

        I agree. I could only be a judge for mabye 10 years b/f I would get bored. If I was the Attorney general, I could do that for 4 or even 8 years, and then I could go back into private practice. At my age I could do both for a total of 18 years and then retire completely b/f I get to be 60, and then become a professor of law at GW or some other place where I would not have to work to hard.

      Lifetime tenure is cool and all, but not the be all end all of a career, especially for someone in his position. He’ll have options after being AG. Plus, as others have noted, he’s 68. Looking at the totality of the circumstances (heh, sorry), he is probably not worried about job security to put food on the table or making exactly the right move to continue to “advance” his career the way someone significantly younger would be. I expect he’s had a satisfying career on the bench; perhaps he’s interested in doing something different but equally valuable to his country and personally and professionally enriching. I clerked for a federal judge who retired from the bench in his early 60s. He’s still working in a legal capacity, but he just wanted a new challenge and felt called to serve in a new way, as he put it. He’s worked in many different capacities — US Attorney, private practice, JAG, judge, some international law roles, and his current role–which he says have all shaped his abilities as a lawyer and as a public servant.

    OK, weird question. I’ve made three Amazon orders since the summer. 2/3 times, I’ve been charged twice and almost immediately refunded the second charge. Has anyone else had this happen? Or know anything about why?

      Are you actually charged? Or does it show up on your credit card statement as a pending charge twice? They might put a pending charge when you order, and then I usually see them actually charge me when it ships.

    Holy living hell. This is not protest, this is insurrection. Congratulations trumpsters – you have truly messed up a formerly great country. The failure to respect honesty and decency, the failure to respect others, and the failure to respect the institutions that are the foundation of democracy have led to this. I am horrified by what is happening, and I am horrified by people who have supported Trump. If you have supported him, you may consider yourself a decent person, but I do not.

      I really hope this is a wakeup call for the republican party. Pre-Trump, there were republicans I strongly disagreed with but respected. I cannot abide anyone who excuses any of this, let alone the ones who are inciting this.

      i jsut watched a video of police LETTING THE TERRORISTS through at a barricade. and a video of cops taking selfies with the mob. they weren’t all overwhelmed. there are police who are straight up participating in this.

        I do not know the difference in the meaning of these fancy terms, but I think we can forget those technicalities, and simply pass a motion labeling them as “A$$wipes”. Agreed? All Agreed? Motion! Agreed. Motion carried! YAY!!

  9. A happy update

    I posted a couple of months ago in frustration about my ninth-grader who was refusing to interact with any of her teachers. Today she attended on-line office hours for the first time and spent an entire half-hour working through problems with her math teacher, who was happy to see her (shocking!) and very helpful (also shocking!). She is beaming with pride right now. I am breathing a huge sigh of relief. A little spark of hope in the midst of a dark time.

      My husband is a high school teacher and he absolutely misses his students and worries about them when they are MIA. I’m so glad your daughter had this moment today – good moments are what keep me going!
