  1. I recently applied for a job in another city. I have been through two rounds of interviews and have been told I am a top candidate for the position. However, my apartment lease ends in a few weeks, and I need to know very soon whether I need to sign another year-long lease. Would it be inappropriate for me to follow up with my interviewers and explain to them my situation? If I am offered the job in the next few weeks, I will likely take it; if not, I will have to sign another lease, and will probably turn down the job if it is offered to me after I have signed another lease. (I live in NYC and finding a year-long subletter is unlikely).

  2. You are VERY lucky. if I were you, I would go to your landlord and ask him to give you a TEMPORARY month-to-month extension with a PROMISE to renew if you don’t get the job, and tell him why. In NYC, it is a landlord’s market, but if you have been a good tenant, and NOT made a mess of your apartement, he should give you the extension. Then, if you get the job, you give 30 day’s notice and leave. If you don’t get the job, you will HAVE to sign a new 1 year lease at the market rent. This way, you should get the best of both world’s! YAY!!!!

BTW, I kind of had this situeation in DC b/c when I was in law school, the landlord wanted to date me. I did NOT want to date him, but b/c the apartement was so nice and looked out on the TOEPATH, I told him I would go out to a restrunt with him (with no funny busness afterwards) if he gave me a 2 month extension on my lease so that I could work one summer there at a goverment job. He did and we went out to eat. He tried to do stuff afterward, but I pushed him away and told him that he PROMISED not to do anything. So he didnt after all. That is what you need to do, but make sure your landlord keep’s his hands to himself. YAY!
