Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
We’re loving the asymmetrical ruched waist on this faux wrap dress, as well as the deep, rich color. We’d probably wear with a brooch, or possibly a long, opera-length necklace. It’s $128 at Nordstrom, available in sizes 2-14. Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique Ruched Faux Wrap Dress
(2015 Update: Note that the dress is now sold under the Maggy London label at Nordstrom — you can also sometimes find the dress at 6pm.)

Hi – just wanted to let you know that the site is back to normal now.

Love the longer length — looks like it would work for taller gals.
Anonymous
love it, but am not a fan of that length of sleeves (due to not having thin arms)
CorporateTool
You could probably wear a long-sleeve shirt underneath, or even a button-down might be an interesting look.

Now this is a win!

I love this dress- the color and length are great, and it seems like the neckline is high enough that you wouldn’t need a cami underneath. The only thing I question is the “faux wrap” nature of the dress. What does that mean? I see it has a zipper, but if the dress is still going to flap open in the front at inopportune times, I am not sure how that’s necessarily an improvement on the wrap.
Cat
ditto – I often have more of a problem with faux wraps (as there’s no functional tie, you can’t adjust the tightness) than I do with “real” wraps.
Nothing a stitch or two at the right place doesn’t fix, though – love the color and high-enough neckline on this one!
Heather
I love it! Great find.

Vaguely related – Anyone know anything about the “Semantiks” line of clothing that just arrived at my local Nordstrom? Irritatingly misspelled brand name aside, the clothes themselves seemed cute but I didn’t try anything on – I was just scoping out the scene in preparation for the semi-annual sale that starts next Wednesday.

I have several Semantiks items. I like them because they are affordable and generally fashionable, but they are not as high-quality as more expensive items and tend to be either synthetic or a synthetic blend. I have one pant suit and the pants are not lined (which I actually prefer), and one skirt suit, which is fully lined. I also have a wool-blend pencil skirt which fits me better than any other skirt I’ve ever owned. Don’t expect anything to last forever though. I’ve had my pant suit for 2 years and it is getting worn out.

I have several Semantiks items, including a suit. The suits are unlined and, IMO, poorly made. I have had to have the pants hemmed twice (the original stitching just plain gave out) and the fabric looks kind of “worn” already. The non-suit items are OK, but they, too, seem to have quality problems. I got a modal t-shirt that I thought would be nice as a layering piece or under suits. The stitching on the arms gave way and now the hems look ragged. I am going to have it repaired, but I would not purchase the brand again because of these issues.

It’s one of the Nordstrom house brands, along with Classiques Entier. The Semantiks brand is cheaper, and not surprisingly, of lower quality, though some things are fine. I like it for more trendy items, as the durability is less of an issue. I do have several items from Classiques Entier and am very impressed with the quality and styling of the clothes.

brrrr…. too cold

I agree. It’s cold (and getting colder) where I live. I need a dress with some sleeves! You can’t put a jacket/cardigan with everything.

good choice. i ordered and returned this dress last week. i thought i was going to really like it, but it looked all wrong. the way the sleeves are set up made me look like a linebacker, which is quite a feat given my narrow shoulders. i think it would look better on a woman with a medium or large bust instead of my small one (more visually balanced with the shoulders/sleeves). the asymmetric waist also made me look REALLY hip-y.
i really liked the neckline’s soft folds, so you could push it open a little to show off a necklace, or close it all the way up to the base of your neck for a conservative look. the skirt wrap seemed pretty secure; the under wrap goes all the way across, and the top wrap is partially sewn down so it wouldn’t be easy to get a concerning amount of leg showing. the length was right below my knee.
this dress would look great on some people, just not me.
Mel
I did look this up under dresses recommended for pear-shaped women and it was not listed. I still had some hope, but it sounds like it really is a bad choice for us based on your review. Oh well.

I’m surprised – I was thinking this would look better on someone with a smaller bust. I’d be afraid this might look a little more like something you’d wear on a date or out for drinks than something you should wear to work. Aside from that, I think it’s beautiful and a great fall color.

Love, love, love this! Will be running down to Nordstrom to try this on soon!

I love this dress! If I get an actual job this summer I am so going to be buying this. The color will layer really well with grey and black for the winter (I think) and would also look nice with a lighter colored contrasting cardigan for the summer.
As someone who is also blessed with um, linebacker shoulders and arms that wave back at me, I always wear cardigans with anything cap-sleeved or sleeveless.
E
This is really cute. I wish it came in petite sizes.

I loooooove this dress and I actually own one, only it’s black. And yes, I have big arms, but this dress really slims me down:)

The faux wrap part seems confusing. I’d rather have a real wrap so I can cinch it around to fit my body. I’d be leery of ordering anything like this online without trying it out first, but maybe I’ll check http://www.gatheringguide.com to see if any stores near me carry something similar. I like how it looks on the model a lot.
