Something on your mind? Chat about it here. I bought a leather necklace a while ago from ShopBop and it's been surprisingly versatile — it's an easy way to make a simple jeans and t-shirt outfit more chic, but it also works with fancier outfits and even the occasional work outfit. This one from 3.1 Phillip Lim, in shades of black, blue and green, is lovely. It's $175 at ShopBop.3.1 Phillip Lim Double Leather Circuit Collar Necklace (L-2)Sales of note for 9.10.24

Anyone have suggestions on building a costume jewelry wardrobe. I have a bunch of “good” jewelry but want to get more into the fun trendy side of things while still looking appropriate.

Try http://www.etsy.com. Just type in the search bar what you’re interested in, for example: red coral necklace. You’ll get tons of hits from independent artists selling beautiful handmade one of a kind pieces. If you’re thinking more “costumey” than that, I really like the Ann Taylor Loft jewelry.

I haven’t bought a lot from Etsy yet, but I have had great luck at Anthropologie and Banana Republic. It can be hit or miss, but most of my favorite pieces come from those two stores.

Hey, Ladies.
How’s the storm treating you? I’m on the Cape. We lost power for about an hour, but it’s back. We’ve got winds gusting up towards 50 mph, but we haven’t had any rain this morning.
What’s going on where you are?
Scully
Center City Philly here- no power outages or damage. The rain is mostly over. I heard the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers flooded, so I’m taking a walk later today to see the extent.

I’m on Nantucket!!! We have a bright sunny breezy amd town is packed-my family has no electricty in CT which makes it even funnier

Mid-Atlantic – I was in a mandatory evacuation zone because I’m in a flood plain (not coastal), but I decided to stay because my car and I are in a high rise. If the flooding was bad enough to leave us stranded, I wouldn’t be able to get around town anyway so I was pretty meh about leaving. As it turns out, we never lost power and there wasn’t any real flooding around my complex. Hope everyone is safe and has electricity (or will be getting it back soon)!

Hey ladies – I’m wanting to get a pashmina for an upcoming trip to use as a blanket kind of thing on the plane and then as a scarf/ wrap for around. Has anyone had any experience with The Pashmina Store? http://www.thepashminastore.com/Pashmina-Silk-Blend-Shawls-s/5.htm
Do they ship quickly and what’s the quality like (are their shawls soft or scratchy)? The price is definitely right!
Thanks!

Hi — I travel A LOT and don’t think a pashmina of any type is warm enough to use as a blanket on the plane.
YMMV

I’m having deja vu – I swear I’ve seen this comment before.

I got one there and I did not love it. It was a lot thinner than the one I was replacing (left it in a villa in Tuscany; yeah, poor me). I used it on planes a couple of times, but when pashminas were on sale at Nordstrom’s after the holidays (as they always are), I picked up one that I like much, much better. I think it really helps to feel cashmere since it can vary in weight so much. My advice is to track one down in a brick and mortar store.
Charmed Girl
Thanks, that’s what has been holding me back from pulling the trigger on it. I’m sensitive to scratchy wool and think I’ll just stick to a real life bricks and mortar where I can test.
Thanks!
Ellen
I have NOT, but they are all 59.99. I know you can get PASHMINA’s on the street in NYC for $5 and that is less then 1/10 of what this web sight is posting.
I GUARENTEE that if you buy 10 on the street in NYC, you will be warmer then if you get one on the INTERNET.
Whoa!
Did a Nordstrom bra fitting today. What a difference! The first bra the incredibly helpful salesperson brought me was like night and day from the bra I walked in wearing. I wasn’t even that terribly off with sizing (I have been wearing a 38D, but measured at a 38DDD — at least I had the band size correct!), but just trying on a bunch of higher end bras made such a difference. You mean the part in the front can lay flat beneath the boobs? And actually support and lift rather than constrict? Amazing!
So I spent way too much, but haven’t bought a new bra in at least a couple of years, so it was totally worth it. Added bonus, I darted across the street to Nordstrom Rack and scored one of the same ones in a less cute color, for $26. Chantarelle really seemed to work for me, and I am now the proud owner of 5 new, well-fitting bras. :)
So how do I take care of them? I let the salesperson talk me into buying Nordstrom’s delicates detergent, and she suggested handwashing. Do I really have to do that? Can I wash on delicate in a mesh bag and air dry? Please?? I know they’re expensive and I should take good care of them, but I also know that I’m extremely busy and everything I own is wash and wear (or dry clean only) — I don’t have the time or patience to fuss with special washing instructions.
Little Lurker
You totally can — I do it all the time. I’d handwash the bras for the first time, especially if they have delicate/lacy bits. As long as you keep them separate from the dingy-making clothes in heavy fabrics, they should be fine.
Darlene
Definitely air dry vs. the dryer b/c of the way heat will break down the elastic. Also, perhaps only handwash one bra so that you can compare it over time with the four that you wash in the machine. Then you’ll know for sure if it makes enough of a difference to you. I would be concerned about the potential for the wires to become misshappen in the washing machine, but before I started investing in nicer bras, I machine washed all the time.
Jennifer
I always machine wash on the delicates or hand wash cycle on my washer, then air dry and I haven’t had any problems with damage to bras, I have a few that are more than 5 years old and still in great condition. I used to use the dryer when I was in high school, and that was what caused all the damage to the bras I had then.
FWIW, I also don’t wash after every wear, I usually stretch it to 3-4 wearings between washings.
I’m also a 32A, so it could be possible that mine just don’t have to work as hard and stay in better condition because of that.

I’m starting a new job tomorrow at a law firm that is definitely business casual – more so (I think) than my last firm (even though dress code there was technically business casual, I wore suits to work pretty frequently). I would usually wear a suit on my first day. My HR contact sent me an email about my first day, and she mentioned that they are business casual so I can feel free to skip the business professional attire on the first day. What would you do? Still wear a suit? Will it seem like I’m ignoring her advice? Wear a more casual looking suit? I have a beige suit (I think Banana calls it “stone”) – how about that?
CSF
Wear a suit, and take the jacket off. Leave it in your office. You can grab it if you need it, but you are dressing at the dress code, or one notch above. I’m the type that always thinks dressing better on the first day is always a good thing.
The beige suit sounds wonderful, especially with a top that will hold its own with or without the jacket.
AJ
I think it would sound like you’re ignoring her, but if you’d feel more comfortable having a suit, I’d wear the stone suit with a shell that can definitely go alone. That way you can take it off, but also put on the jacket if the situation seems like it needs it.
Mere
You could always wear the stone suit but bring a cardigan to wear with it once you get settled. You could also step it down and wear a blazer with a non-matching skirt.
Sandy McSouthers
If she told you to feel free to skip the business formal attire, definitely skip the suit, or go with your most casual suit if you can’t bear the thought of not wearing one.
I feel like when the powers that be explain dress codes like this, it really should be heeded.
WorkingGirl
I don’t think the HR person has a whole lot of power. I would wear the suit–it’s the other attorneys you want to dress for. You can take the jacket off.

Once you have the job, HR is not among the powers that be. After in-processing, you will (hopefully) never see them again.
