Re: Parents not attending Parent-Teacher night. It turns out it doesn’t matter to your kid’s education if you do or not: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/04/and-dont-help-your-kids-with-their-homework/358636/

I skimmed, but will go read more thoroughly later. Really interesting article! I tend to agree with one line that stood out to me: Parents should set high expectations and then step back. I don’t think that means you should ignore parent-teacher night, though; it’s a chance to meet the person who spends more time with your kid during the day than you do. It seemed to me that the article was really telling people that helicopter parenting doesn’t give you child an advantage.
If I had a dollar for every time my mom, who is a teacher, complained about the overinvolved parents of her elementary school students…
CapHillAnon: Exposed Zipper Work-Around?
Has anyone ever tried to sew a cover an exposed zipper on a dress? Maybe with a grosgrain ribbon or something? I can’t decide if it’ll look subtle and more finished than a bright gold exposed zipper or not. Will it bunch up and look like a hack?
Ive stopped wearing my favorite Tahari dress because of my growning dislike of exposed zippers. I’ve always worn it with a cardigan to cover the zipper, but that changes the lines of the dress.
I could maybe sew a 3/4 ” ribbon on one side of the zipper, like a one-sided placket. Has anyone done something like this?

I think it will be even more noticeable to try to cover it up. It should actually not be a big job for a tailor to replace the zipper (or even sew the original zipper on the interior).

Just reread your original comment and I’m not sure what you mean by “exposed zipper”. A true exposed zipper has the zipper tape on the outside of the dress. The gold metal of a zipper is not really an “exposed zipper”, if the tape is on the inside. You might be looking for what is called an “invisible zipper”. Whether or not a regular zipper can be replaced with an invisible zipper depends how the fabric is cut. It might still be doable depending on the dress.

I had my tailor turn an exposed zipper into an invisible zipper on a Milly dress. The fabric was thick wool, and not too tight. I think it depends on the fabric, if there is enough to cover it. But I can’t sew for beans, so just ask your tailor what s/he thinks.
CapHillAnon: Exposed Zipper Work-Around?
This is so helpful! I hadn’t thought about the distinction. It sounds like my dress doesn’t have an exposed sipper, because the tape is on the inside, but it has a loud-looking metal zipper. I am heading to the tailor tomorrow to see if it can be replaced with an invisible zipper. Thanks so much!

That Slate article made me so mad I couldn’t think straight. Just wanted to pick up a rock and hurl it at humanity in general.
