That catcalling comment is just the least feminist thing I’ve ever heard in my life.
I have to disagree with you there.
Yes. I really hope that Kat/Kate/April linked it simply because it was interesting, not because she somehow thought it was an admirable response.
Exactly.
The real kicker is that she started the whole thing by saying that conservatives were “afraid” of her. Shapiro’s response was that he would donate money to her campaign or to the charity of her choice to debate her. She then… insulted him and played victim.
So pathetic and anti-feminist.
I’m not sure I really understand the issue with Ben Shapiro, and I’m not all that impressed by her response. We can’t simultaneously hold that women are no different than men in various arenas (e.g. business, law, politics, media, whatever) and then gender-ize things when a man challenges a woman… obviously she has no obligation to respond to him in any form (and certainly no obligation to debate him). But whatever he’s doing is not a man catcalling a woman – he’s a political media pundit engaging with a political candidate.
+100
She’s not saying he’s catcalling, it was an analog about his sense of entitlement to a response. Politicians ignore interview requests all the time. But when it’s a female candidate and a male reporter, they seem to feel entitled to a response.
He’s not a reporter, he’s a commentator primarily through social media. Male reporters don’t feel entitled to a response. He ginned it up to get more attention. It’s just not the same thing. She brought s e x into it unnecessarily. What about the female reporter Allie who has asked Alexandria for an interview repeatedly? Is she catcalling her? It just doesn’t work.
Those things are not analogous for the reasons that Ali pointed to. Obviously, pundits (no one’s going to suggest that Shapiro is a neutral reporter) can score points by pointing out that they didn’t get a response; they do that all of the time. There’s no evidence that it’s a gendered entitlement, and it’s offensive to real feminist issues to suggest that it is.
I feel like you are all right and that Ocasio-Cortez is just playing her crowd here. Another part of me is just happy that someone in politics thinks catcalling is bad.
Kat, I read EVERY word of the Parent’s article about haveing babies after age 35. I am goeing to show Dad and Grandma Leyeh who have practically told me to dress without panties so I can attract a guy who will impregnate me and marry me. This article gives me more hope that I have the time find a DECENT man, not just someone who want’s to have sex, and then feels guilty after impregnating me . That is NOT what marrage is built on. I want a guy who wants to MARRY me, not just b/c I am pregnant with his child. FOOEY on that!
