I spent far too long this weekend browsing the new Prabal Gurung for Target collection online, but I have to say: there's a lot of cute stuff, whether for work or play. For today's coffee break, I like these colorful pumps — personally I'd wear them with a black pencil skirt/black turtleneck combo, but I suspect they'd also look great with any number of colorful outfits as well. They're $39 and available at Target.com. Women's Prabal Gurung for Target® Pointy-Toe Pump – Nolita Print (L-3)Sales of note for 9.10.24

I went to Target yesterday to try things on, and thought that the sandals and heels with the ankle straps ran a 1/2 size larger, but that the pumps ran 1/2 size smaller, just an FYI!

Oh good! A shoe-related post makes my question almost not a threadjack.
I recently got a pair of slingbacks that I rather like; they are my first pair of slingbacks. However, I also like pants, and these shoes are giving me two problems. The first is that they sound like flip flops when I walk, and that just bugs me. The second is that the hem of my pants get caught under my heel when I’m walking and I end up walking with my pants between my foot and shoe, which looks a little ridiculous. Do these problems happen to other people? Is this just destiny with these shoes, or is there a way to stop it?
anonypotamus
I have a pair of shoes exactly like this – super comfy but slingback. I tend to wear them with skirts to avoid the pants problem, but they still thwack against my feet with every step. I have heard about people putting small weights or pennies inside the hem of their pants to weight them down, but haven’t tried it yet myself. I think my solution is just avoiding slingbacks from now on :) If anyone has any brilliant solutions, I’m curious.
Pest
I don’t think there is a solution. I gave up slingbacks except for with skirts in non-professional settings for these reasons.
Houston Attny
I agree with anonypotamus and Pest. I haven’t figured out a solution to pants-stuck-between-my-slingbacks-and-my-foot, and it drives me crazy. With slingbacks, skirts only for me too.
MN Girl
So annoying. I scarcely wear slingbacks, partly because of the annoyance you describe (and to be honest, partly due to weather. See: MN Girl). I do seem to remember there being some little device that was being marketed a few years back — I read about it on some fashion blog and was fascinated enough to click through and read up on it, but not attached enough to slingbacks to do anything about it. I’m going to see if my friend Google can come up with this ostensible miracle-product for slingback lovers.
MN Girl
Okay, fwiw, The Google found:

I also think there is/was something called Kix by Katie that did the same kind of thing.

Antidepressants. Does anyone have a success story about trying 50 gajillion things and finally landing on the right one/combo? And something that won’t cause weight gain? I have an appointment with a psychopharmacologist on Wednesday. Unfortunately this isn’t my first time at the rodeo, but I have to try again. Many thanks in advance.
Anon
I don’t have much experience as I have only tried one kind, and only started it about 2 months ago, but it seems to be working for me. I’m on effexor, which is an SNRI as opposed an SSRI. I think the main difference is that it gives you a bit more energy as opposed to being sedating like the SSRIs can be, but everyone reacts differently. It definitely gives me more energy, and has made me lose appetite which has led to some weight loss. I’m on a low dose. Some sleeping difficulties in the beginning, but that seems to have gone away now. Good luck, and I hope you find the right medication for you. I wish I had started on mine sooner.
Anonymous
Absolutely! I tried several things over time and they would work for a while and then become less effective. I found a wonderful psychologist who excels at making “cocktails” of different medications that work together better than individual medications could work alone. (Disclaimer: I call them cocktails because it sounds more fun; he’s far too professional to call the combination that.) Hang in there!!!
Anon
I had a horrible time with Lexapro. Now I’m taking Wellbutrin, and I can’t believe the difference. It took a loooooong time (30-45 days) to feel the full effects, but it’s been well worth the wait. It also is an appetite suppressant, so weight gain shouldn’t be an issue.
Antidepressant experience
I have been on several different antidepressants over the years, starting in the 1990s. I’ve tried SSRIs, tricylics and am currently on an SNRI (Cymbalta).
I’ve never had any weight gain problems related to antidepressants.
It sounds like you are already aware that it can take some playing around until you find the ideal drug/combination/dose. Keep the lines of communication with the prescriber open and try not to be too impatient (easier said than done, I know!).
Anon
I only ever tried one , Celexa, but it worked very well for me and caused me to lose weight to the point where I had to be very conscious about eating enough. I went off a couple of years ago after my personal situation improved, but I often miss its mood effects
Anon
Celexa didn’t work for me. I basically had no appetite as it was, and I don’t think the Celexa helped on that front. I lost weight quite quickly, and like a previous Anon, I had to make sure I was eating enough. I’m on Lexapro now, and after playing with dosage a bit, I’m doing better. I gained back some of the weight I lost, but I don’t know how much of that is due to medication and how much has to do with feeling steadier and regaining more of an appetite.
Good luck in finding some that works for you!
Anon for this
The prescription drugs made me feel like a lead balloon mentally and emotionally and the weight gain made me even more depressed. The doctor completely sugar coated the weight gain. He said expect to gain maybe 15 pounds. It was closer to 50!
My solution was hardcore:
To the best of my ability, I got all the things that were making me crazy out of my life. I ditched the toxic people and job; I moved; I stopped eating the crappy food and drinking booze; I reconnected with the hobbies that made me happy; and I work out regularly whether a I *feel* like it or not. This is the “medication” that helps keep the anxiety at bay and helps me sleep through the night.
But like I said, this is hardcore. I completely changed my life for the sake of sanity. It was scary and stressful, but I felt that I had no other choice. I have NO regrets and will never let myself get sucked back into the toxic mire that I was in before. And I can say this in full confidence because I know its true. I am a completely different, stronger, wiser person. And I have been completely free of the meds for 11 years now.
Its your life. You have to fight for it. No one is going to do it for you and the doctors would love for you to stay on drug$ and in therapy ($) for the rest of your life.
L
Good for you – with no snark. But everyone is different and “drug$” help some people. Not everything is a conspiracy aimed at keeping people in a crappy state for the sake of making money.
b23
I agree. Your story is impressive. But really, doctors do not make any money by putting people on drug$. Sure, they have to come back regularly for refills, but most doctors are so overworked that they certainly would not unnecessarily prescribe drugs just to get an extra appointment every six months or so. And they make no money from it directly.
Yes, I’m married to a doctor, so I get defensive. But it bugs me when people disparage an entire profession like that, and I see it so. much. with doctors. There are bad doctors just like there are bad lawyers, plumbers, accountants, mechanics, etc. But what you are accusing them of is pretty low — intentionally keeping you on unneeded medication, thereby disregarding your health which they have sworn to care for, just for a few extra bucks.
Emjay
I’m a doctor and I am plenty busy with patients and their actual issues to the extent that I don’t have to put people on unnecessary medications to ensure follow-up. Plus there’s that whole Hippocratic oath do-no-harm thing. I am so annoyed at the assertion that we push meds to increase our bottom line. That’s bad medicine and I have yet to meet a colleague who does this.
Anon as well
Congrats on your success!
I never made as many aggressive changes as you, but while in my 20s I thought I could diet and exercise to happiness because of the benefits of nutrition and working out. Also, I had no health insurance. It helped, but it was NOT enough. I cried at the gym, in the pool, and on the trail. It is a relief to finally have access to the help of an M.D. and a Ph.D.
You are fortunate to have had the resources to at least try medication and therapy. The barriers to adequate mental health care are huge, and I wish I had the insurance to seek medical help years ago.
just Karen
I had an awful time on Paxil and did really well on Wellbutrin for a very long time – I am on my third day of the taper-off trying to wean off of it, but only because we are at the very beginning stage of thinking about TTC. My experience was that I lost weight when I started it due to appetite suppression, but my body/mind adjusted and appetite went back to normal – one way I would realize I had missed my daily dose was if I was inexplicably ravenously hungry. Everyone’s different, but I know more people who have done well on Wellbutrin than who have done badly on it (the ones who it didn’t work for…it just just didn’t work for them. not a horror story). Bonus for me was the ADHD assistance it provides.
EmilyD
Thank you, everyone — I greatly appreciate your thoughts.
I definitely believe that no drug in the world will help if you can’t make changes in your life that support those pharmaceutical efforts. That said, I believe it is time to give this another shot.

I love these shoes.
SFBayA
Me too. I wish they were better quality.
Divaliscious11
This. I just can’t wear cheap shoes…..
b23
Have you seen them in person, or are you just speaking to the general quality of these collaborations? I’m really tempted by these shoes.
SFBayA
I have not seen them in person, but I won’t even consider buying shoes that started as less than $150. At present, all my shoes retailed over $300, though I sale stalked them before buying. I only wear shoes that are real leather, with real leather lining. Yes, I know how snobby/princessy that sounds, but at this point, I own my “need” for quality shoes. Cheap shoes give my feet, ankles, and knees blisters, soreness, and pain. I’d rather have only a few pair of quality shoes than a dozen plus pairs of junk shoes. Props to the women who can wear $40 shoes, but they would be a painful disaster for me. Too bad, because they are super cute.
b23
Thanks. That’s what I figured. I am usually the same way but am tempted by these nonetheless.
Katy Beth
What brands do you wear?
SFBayA
Ferragamo, Kate Spade, Stuart Weitzman, LK Bennett, Aquatalia.
Divaliscious11
In the same place as SFBayA.
I have tried, but if it is cheaply made or constructed, it just hurts. My dad has always said, you only have one pair of feet – if you chew them up in cheap shoes, your stuck with them!
I am a huge fan of hi/lo in clothing, but shoes are off limits. And some are cute! the Target wedges everyone raves about? Really cute, but not worth the foot pain…
NOLA
Yeah I’m getting there, too. I can easily wear heels all day if they’re balanced and well made.
Bonnie
Ditto. I haven’t seen these in person but the shoes in the Missoni line were cheaply made.
Bonnie
Incidentally I am allergic to an ingredient used in cheap shoe glue so can honestly say that I have to wear nice shoes.
hoola hoopa
Oh, and they come in flats, too :)
Cb
Ooh. the flats are tempting!
Nancy P
I don’t see them available though in any size. Sigh.
Olivia Pope
The flats seem to be unavailable, which is weird. That pattern is very cute, and my feet do a lot better in cheap flats than in cheap heels.

Monday needs to go away already.
Just got an update that my favorite teacher from High School (had him all 4 years: he singlehandedly convinced me that I was smart enough to succeed, and forced me to learn Algebra when I wanted to quit), my very first mentor, has been given less than a year to live.
And yeah, I did cry at work. Complete ‘r3tt3 fail.
For anyone who has dealt with this: I am not extremely close to him anymore, but I would like to do something. Do I send a warm blanket for chemo? Dinner? I’m completely at a loss.
AIMS
I’m so sorry. I would send him a letter and tell him all this. My father was a teacher and it always meant a lot to him to keep in touch with his students and know that he had a positive impact on their lives. When he passed away, it also meant a lot to me to see how many came to his funeral. It was really beautiful and very meaningful to me and my mom. I’m sure a kind gesture like sending a meal or some other item of comfort would always be appreciated, but I think knowing his life made a difference in yours would go even further.
anon
AIMS, that’s a sweet story and a good reminder to thank people when we have the chance. I wished i got to do that with my long-time mentor/boss before he died unexpectedly in October.
AIMS
@anon, thank you. If your mentor has a surving spouse/children, perhaps you can write them a note to share the impact he had on your life. I know I always appreciate hearing stories about my dad from those who knew him in ways I didn’t and it may make you feel a certain closure, too.
cc
I’m really sorry to hear that. I think reaching out in general is a great first step, especially with maybe a card stating how much his teaching has impacted your life.
Also I want to point that a lot of people here go “r3tt3 fail” when they cry. Its a r3tt3 fail to cry after constructive critism, but not when something actually bad happens. Men cry at that too.

This. I cried at work last week when I found out that a college friend died unexpectedly. We are human, we cry.

This exactly. There is nothing wrong with crying in this sort of scenario. So sorry for what a shock this must be.
I second the suggestion to send a thoughtful letter. It would be very meaningful to hear about the impact he has had in your life.
Divaliscious11
That’s not a fail…. at all.

Hugs. I absolutely agree with the recommendations to write a letter telling him how much you appreciated him as a teacher.

Does anyone in the HIVE know anything about getting a pool house repaired in the Hamton’s?
The manageing partner called ME from the Hamton’s and told ME to look into it. I think this is some thing that Margie should do, b/c I do NOT even live out there, or know any carpenter’s, but he asked me. He said that Margie was to upset to call anyone.
I do NOT think any carpenter’s will be workeing with 26 inche’s of SNOW on the ground but mabye the HIVE knows?

Book group book recommendations?
I’m looking for recommendations for a ‘rette-style group of young professionals (though nothing to alienate any men who might join). We want to do a book group but don’t know where to start. Probably fiction &/or mysteries with some other stuff thrown in? Nothing too brain-candy-ish or girly would be great. I haven’t found similar recommendations on this site through searches – help please?
Thank you!!
Laura B
I just started Outlander this weekend and am about 60% through it. I know it’s been recommended here before and it is fantastic. I am so excited because it’s the beginning of a long series.
Also loved Game of Thrones (especially the first three books), which I never would have picked up if not for this site’s recommendations.
Other recommendations:
The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson
Finding Nouf by Zoe Ferraris
Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer
The Name of Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (another this site recommendation)
What is the What by Dave Eggers
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Hellhound on His Trail: The Stalking of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the International Hunt for His Assassin by Hampton Sides
The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent A Year Trying To Sing In The Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, And Generally Have More Fun By Gretchen Rubin
Water For Elephants By Sara Gruen
Weird that you haven’t found recommendations through site searches; there usually is a thread every now and then that I glean tons of book recommendations from.
Merabella
I’m so glad you liked Outlander! I’m on the last book that she has written so far, and I’m trying to savor it because I know I will be itching for the next one, but won’t be able to read it.
I also second the rec on Devil in the White City & The Book Thief.
I will also make my standard rec for The Disappearing Spoon. Seriously it is good y’all.

Currently reading the Cutting Stone by Attica Locke. It’s about a murder that takes place on a plantation turned tourist attraction, and it’s quite gripping, I’m about 2/3 done.

Thank you to everyone who offered experiences and suggestions over the weekend.
We’re going to try some fresh activities in the bedroom and in general. I’m also going to work on my boredom with my life outside of my relationship with my husband. Anna hit that nail on the head.
Leather repair?
I splurged on a marc by marc jacobs hobo bag last July (the classic q hillier in a mushroom color) from n’strom. There are two small spots on the front where the leather has scraped away. Is this normal? Is there a way to repair it? Should I have done something to prevent this? Are there general maintenance/cleaning steps I should be taking? Thanks. I’m sad because this was a big purchase for me and now it’s in less than great condition.
anon
I bought a MBMJ bag on ebay that had a similar issue, it looked like some of the “paint” had peeled off; I took it to a shoe repair place and they covered it for me no charge. It isn’t a 100% match but you can’t really see it if you’re not looking for it.
Anon
I would take it back to the store. I have a marc by marc jacobs (different style – baby groovee) in black and I’ve had it for about 2 years at this point. I use it every day and the leather still looks as good as it did when I bought it. And I am NOT gentle on my bags.
b23
Agreed. Take it back to the store. Or call Amex if you purchased it with their card. You should be able to get your money back for a defective purse.

Third. I have the small classic Q (percey?) and have had it for a year. Toss it in and out of larger bags, throw it on the floor of the car and generally treat it with reckless abandon. Holding up perfectly.

How do I cope with getting a $0 bonus? Don’t want to give too many details without giving myself away, but bonuses are discretionary, I was expecting something (maybe 3-4k) and found out today I got nothing. Found out because others got bonuses but I didn’t. No one came to explain it to me. I basically had a lump in my throat all day and I get super worked up whenever I think about it. I wasn’t sure what to expect since this is the first year of a new compensation model, but in precious years it was standard for someone in my position to get 3k, and I have gone above and beyond what was required in previous years. Obviously once I calm down I’m going to inquire as to why this is, but I would appreciate any help/advice you guys can offer on how to deal with this. I feel like it is a slap in the face and feel super unappreciated and not valued. If I didn’t have student debt and a mortgage I may have quit today.
CW
Hugs. That’s awful. Could it just be because you haven’t spoken with your boss or whomever would tell you this information today? Perhaps it was a timing issue.
momentsofabsurdity
I think you absolutely should talk to your boss, once you’ve calmed down enough that you can talk about it without getting emotional. I would say something just like you said here – “I believe I’ve gone above and beyond the requirements for the position by doing X, Y and Z. In the past, that level of effort has warranted a bonus of X, and I’d like to understand why one was not offered to me this year.”
Then let them speak. It’s possible there’s a good reason, it’s possible there’s not. Either way, it’s worth it so you can at least feel like you made your point heard.
Houston Attny
“Then let them speak.” This. Sometimes it’s hard to not babble on and continue to talk about why you deserve it and how hurt you were or whatever you are thinking, but instead of overexplaining, let them defend the decision. And obviously, on the ‘babble on’ front, I’m speaking from experience. :)
Brant
How’d you find out? No idea how normal this is, but I find out my bonus amount as part of my annual review. Well…I get the “score” upon which my bonus will be determined based on the size of the bonus pool, then the amount of the bonus pool is announced and I do the math.
Did you just get a check for $0?
Brant
I should clarify that I do have a bonus target as part of my comp package.
Rural Juror
We weirdly don’t get bonuses with our reviews (that’s too logical) one of the partners just goes around to the associates offices and dishes them out. I know I didn’t get one because today was bonus day (several people mentioned getting their bonuses) and this partner was in my office today giving me work, after bonuses were distributed, and didn’t even mention it.
TBK
Do you have any sense of how many people got $0? Is it possible that just a handful of people got bonuses, but they’re the only ones talking about it? How has your employer been doing this year? If they’re not doing so well (“new compensation model” often screams “oh %&!@, things aren’t going well but we don’t want to say that”) then it might be that they’re trying to sneakily cut compensation. On the other hand, is it possible that the new comp model has more discretion and you’re just not very good at promoting yourself (or at least not as good as your co-workers) so you’re just not getting credit for all the work you’re doing? Was it clear when they rolled out the new comp system that some people wouldn’t get bonuses? Because $0 is just weird, absent some clear performance issues (and it sounds like you haven’t had that).
Rural Juror
I think there are a few others who got snubbed too. When the new model came out they actually made it seem like more people would be eligible for bonuses but it may have been a devious compensation cut from the start. Sigh.
Commiseration
I got a $750 bonus. I was expecting $3k-$4k after prior talks with my boss. I know how awful it feels. I hate the concept of bonuses. It just lets employers promise employees tons of money and then legally get out of paying them the compensation because “bonuses are discretionary.” If employers were more honest about peoples’ chances and amounts then I would love them. But they are not. I’d rather get a higher base salary and no bonus than wait like a puppy for my treat and get nothing.
Brant
THe very first company I worked for was so honest and open (and generous) about bonuses that I’ve been spoiled ever since. At that company, I hit my bonus target every year, and on many occasions exceeded it by a substantial amount. While negotiating my next job salary, I explained that I was comfortable with a lower salary and higher bonus because I always meet/exceed expectations on bonus performance…It was a pretty big slap in the face when I learned that even though I got a great review, our company didn’t make its numbers so the bonus pool wasn’t funded. I have not made that mistake since!

Pregnant Shoe Lover
I LOVE THESE SHOES. But…I am pregnant. Only 6 weeks, though! If I bought them now, how many weeks do you think I could continue to wear heels before throwing them out of the car in a rage?
Any chance in h3ll I could make it all the way to easter (end of March)???
JJ
Every one is different, but I was wearing my heels until I was about 7 months pregnant with my first. I couldn’t wear them every day, but probably 3 days a week, I was wearing something in the 2-3.5 inch range.
Now that I’m pregnant with my second, however, I switched to flats pretty much the minute the test was positive. I’ll still wear heels 2X a week or so, but I don’t enjoy it.
Anon
I think you could make it to the end of Easter, especially if you want to wear them on Easter (as in not every day, but for a special occasion.) That is less than 2 months away. My feet did not start swelling until I was further along, and I was able to wear heels even in the third trimester.
anonypotamus
Plus, Easter is super early this year :) Can’t comment on the heels/pregnancy issue, but as a shoe lover…enabling!
Maddie Ross
32 weeks today and still in 4 inch heels. I am also a heel love though and generally find that taller heels (3-4 inches) are more comfortable for me than 1.5 or 2 inch heels. Haven’t really had any swelling in my feet either. If you’re just 6 weeks now, I feel fairly confident you can make it to Easter.
Research, Not Law
You’ll be ~13 wks at Easter? You’re golden. You can probably be in heels through the second trimester. YMMV.
another shoe lover
Agree that everyone is different. I showed up at the hospital to deliver in 4 inch heels and wore similar height shoes throughout my pregnancy. (I went into labor at work, in case anyone was thinking that I dressed up to go to the hospital.)
Impressed
At first, I thought you were Victoria Beckham. But then I saw that your heels were only 4″ not 6″. Still, kudos! :-)
anon
I wore heels throughout my pregnancy. I switched towards chunkier heels (which are more grounded for me) towards the end, but I actually found that heels, tights, and a skirt was the most comfortable business-maternity-wear that I had.
a passion for fashion
i wore heels all throughout my first pregnancy and until about month 7.5/8 in my second. My second was born in the summer and with the heat, i was a bloated, swollen mess. So if youre used to wearing heels, you ought to be able to wear them for a while.

Does anyone know if the TSA would consider cream cheese a liquid? I know that sounds crazy but they took away my honey once and I now take no chances. I am flying to visit my sister tomorrow and would like to bring her some real NY bagels and cream cheese. The bagels in FL are just not the same!
momentsofabsurdity
Once upon a time, RIGHT after the ban was introduced, the TSA made me throw away cupcakes because they considered the frosting on them a “gel.” (Side note – I hate you TSA.) Now I think they’re less strict. But won’t your cream cheese go bad if you have it out for the whole flight?
cbackson
…the cream cheese is the same in Florida. Just bring the bagels.

I agree with cbackson, but if you really want to bring the cream cheese, I regularly get through security with a tub of vaseline (not in a baggie or anything), and vaseline seems like a similar consistency to cream cheese.
TJ
Thanks all! My sister is one of those people with only soy sauce and ketchup in her fridge so I wanted to make a whole big surprise out of it without having to detour to the nearest supermarket. The flight is only 2 hours so I feel like it would survive if only the good people at TSA would allow it. I think I am going to try it. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
GirlMeetsWorld
Or once you get through, ask the airline to gate-check your luggage?
CW
Are you checking a bag? What about putting the cream cheese in an insulated lunch box with an ice pack?
S in Chicago
Bring a baggie or two with you. After you clear security (assuming you will), ask one of the food vendors or bartenders for some ice. I did this to keep a slice of our wedding cake from melting on the way home from our tropical wedding.
Brant
As someone who has had yogurt and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (JELLY IS A LIQUID) confiscated, I bet cream cheese is a liquid. You could make the argument that it is cheese…which is a solid.
I travel a LOT, and never get anything taken away when I’m in business attire. On vacation, they give me the third degree, always.
Maddie Ross
I’ve heard that peanut butter is taboo for the TSA, so I would think that cream cheese may fall in the same category.
TJ
I guess I can always toss it? :-(
Niktaw
I’d think peanut butter and hopefully other nut butters are banned because they are powerful allergens.
In House Lobbyist
I often travel with those individual serving of peanut butter in my purse and never had any problems with TSA. I have also traveled with peanut butter sandwiches without problem.
anon
If you’re worried, maybe freeze it? It’ll technically be a solid. :)

Cream cheese does not freeze well! I had an unfortunate experience in college when my roommate decided to stock up on it and put a bunch in the freezer. It comes out all grainy.

Dying laughing right now. My husband and I got held up at JFK trying to get through security to an international flight because these poor people who spoke zero English were trying to get through with an ENTIRE CARRYON SUITCASE of Philadelphia Cream Cheese blocks. They were flying to somewhere in the middle east and security could not decide if it was a liquid or not. They tried to tell them they couldn’t have it. Then they tried to explain that it would spoil in a regular suitcase going all the way to the middle east inside the plane. Then they got a translator. Then they got a supervisor. We were stuck in line behind them the whole time. Finally, I honestly think TSA just gave up but for whatever reason, they let them through.

Cream cheese is serious business, apparently.
Says the woman who got questioned at customs due to the the quantity of chocolate declared when returning from France…

And coffee. My mom had to pay import duties on the brand new suitcase full off coffee beans she brought back from Costa Rica.

Thought the collection looked pretty cute when I went last night, but it was *teeny-tiny*. That’s only speaking for the dresses. They looked like they came from a children’s collection! Speaking as a size 10/12.

Thanks for the warning. I hate that.
LSAT
Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced LSAT tutor in the Ann Arbor, MI area or a virtural LSAT tutor?
Thanks!

Reposting from Weekend thread, as I was late to the game and still seeking advice. Thanks to everyone who replied over the weekend.
I have a friend, as close as a brother- we’ve known each other since we were babies. He is spiraling out of control due to mental health and alcohol addiction. He has recently starting using street drugs (heroin) and I’m concerned for him. I’ve told him to go get help, seek rehab, attend NA. He sees therapists but apparently its not working. Thankfully- he is a continent away but I’m at a loss for what I can do at this point. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks.

This is a heart breaking development in regards to someone that you love. Honestly, the only thing you can do is take care of yourself — your mental health, your boundaries, your emotions. You can chose to be present for him, and you can decide what things you are willing to do (if he calls and asks for a loan, what will you say? What if it’s to get into rehab? What if it’s to get into rehab a fourth time? What if it’s a call form an ICU where he is critically ill due to the realities of heroin addiction). But he has a terrible disease that is winning right now, and there is honestly nothing you can “do” that will help the disease go into remission. If he decides to get well, there is a long road in front of him, and if he’s working a plan, I would be totally ready to jump in and provide support. But right now, when he’s in the depths of it? The only thing you can do is take care of yourself.
Mighty Mouse
So eloquent, EC.
Reminds me of a quote from Anais Nin—“you cannot save people, you can only love them.”
Agree that thinking through your boundaries *now* is so helpful.

Thanks for this. :)

Urgh. Misdirected email rant. My personal email address is being flooded with emails asking about a car that I suppose is listed on Craigslist. Some dumbf#ck typed in the wrong email address.
I could go looking for the listing as Craigslist has a process to remove stuff like this, but I don’t even know what state dumbf#ck lives in, and I’m sure there are plenty of people trying to sell a used Jeep… it’s just not worth my time to go searching for this. Easier to spamfile all the replies.
Seriously, if you want to sell a car, shouldn’t you get your own email right? If you are Jane Doe, and you know you’re JaneDoe2166493@gmail.com, you should remember that leaving off the number means somebody else gets your email.

You poor thing! Respond to the most properly-written inquiry and see if they’ll send you the link! They have an interest in getting to the right person, too, and it will be FAR less work for you. Very frustrating!

This is a good idea. I do realize that my rant is about the teeniest of annoyances in the molehill of #firstworldproblems, but it’s weird to get 100+ emails suddenly. I’ll do that, and it’ll make everybody’s life a teeny bit better!

Someone just joined a dating site called “Farmers Only” and gave my SO’s email address when he set up the account, so now he’s getting various notifications that women looked at his profile and so on. It’s obviously funny, but I think he also told me about it in case I saw any of these emails and thought it was actually him! (He’s not a farmer, but maybe he thinks I’d suspect he had secret fanatsies or something?) In the meantime, we’re wondering if this person is trying to stay under cover for some reason of his own, hence the incorrect email address. We also realized that if my SO “forgot password” he’d suddenly have access to everything on this guy’s account…but in the meantime he’s not sure what to do, if anything.

There’s a dating site called “Farmers Only?” That is awesome.

We had never heard of it before either.

Totally just saw an ad for it last weekend. My mom and I couldn’t stop laughing. How many women do you suppose are on it?
moss
it was mentioned on “wait wait don’t tell me” over the weekend.

My “personal business” email is firstname.lastname_at____.com. I get all kinds of weird sign-ups and really private information intended for other women. One woman was so bad that I was able to log on to many of her accounts (financial, medical, social, etc.). I used one account to find her home address. I actually sent her a snail-mail letter informing her that I had access to all this and that she really needed to stop using my email. Haven’t had problems (with her) since.
Now, I respond to the sender with “You’ve reached the wrong firstname lastname. Please double check the email address and resend. If she is handing out this address, please ask her to stop.” It’s worked well with the real estate appraiser in the Midwest with my name. Still have someone in Latin America, someone in Israel, and an alum of a small liberal arts college to deal with.

I got emails for someone with a similar name in my last year of grad school. She was planning her wedding so I always replied back to let the person know it wasn’t the right address – it was often wedding stuff.
Once one of her friends wrote a long, funny apology email (for missing a planned get-together) that started “I am the stupidest person in the world!” And I wrote back, “Normally I’d contradict such a claim! But … ”
It made me laugh. But 100 a day would make me channel Godzilla.

Thanks for the wording. I have struggled with this as well. I try, but it just keeps happening. There’s one in particular that I should try to get a home address for.
Which always makes me wonder how much of my email they receive… Since mine is first (dot) last (at) blah (dot com), I don’t think that I or anyone else could get it wrong – there are no random numbers, etc – but I wonder.

Someone else has the same name as me. (I think there only two of us) We reglarly get emails/LinkedIn/FB requests for the other. It’s been funny to share them. She friended me on FB.
Mouse
I was inspecting my mother’s use of social media and discovered she had friended some chick with my name but was obviously NOT ME. I asked her about it, and she responded–I thought it was you! Why she didn’t unfriend after she discovered the error, I do not know.
Sigh.
Fairly Legal
I have the same first name and last name as my aunt (married my dad’s brother) and we used to live right next door to each other when I lived with my parents. I once got a voicemail from my aunt saying I needed to call this insurance man about a car accident I had been in, where I apparently killed someone and then drove away, because he called her first. Apparently it didn’t cross her mind that it wasn’t me who did this, that there is another of us with the same name
Gift for Teen Mom?
Regular poster, name change because this contains obviously identifying details. It may be too late in the day for this, so if you see this tomorrow, I apologize…
My mom’s husband’s daughter (not really a step sister since our parents were married when I was a senior in college and I only see her at Christmas) had a baby today. She’s a sophomore in high school. I’d like to send a good-sized gift card of some sort, since a cute outfit or sentimental something is not what she needs. Would an Amazon Prime membership so she could use Amazon Mom be appropriate, with a gift card, or should I just get a Wal-Mart gift card? She lives in a rural area, so those would be the only 2 options for getting diapers and baby staples. I’m not sure if a teenager would use Prime.
Help, please! Thanks!
anon
I’d just get the Wal-Mart gift card. Amazon Prime is great, but it does slightly require that you get your act together to order things in advance. I bet she’d be happier with Wal-Mart, where she can just show up and get what she wants. Plus it can be kind of overwhelming to sort through baby supplies on Amazon at first.
Olivia Pope
I would say Wal-Mart gift card. That may also be useful if her local W-M has a grocery section, for instance.
Research, Not Law
Normally I love the gift of prime for new parents (because two-day shipping can be soooo much faster than I can get my behind to the store, much less comparison shop), but in this case I’d do WM. I think she could use the money for items more than free shipping.
Gift for Teen Mom?
Thank you guys! You confirmed what I was thinking, but I love Prime so much!
MaggieLizer
Could you include something small for her to have an afternoon out with her friends? Maybe movie tickets or a gift card to a local nail salon? I’d imagine it’s really hard for a teen mom to stay connected with her friends, so anything that would allow her to do that without having to ask her parents for MORE money would probably really help her.
Gift for Teen Mom?
What an awesome idea! Thanks!

Local news just described this year’s Rex, King of Carnival, as the MANAGEING PARTNER of a prominent local law firm. Tee hee.

Oh, no, I don’t think it was in print. It was just on local TV news. I cracked up when I heard that.

I bought these shoes on Sunday and wore them to work yesterday with the black pants and a yellow sweater. They were a big hit. I love them.
