Banana Republic Watercolor wrap dressWe’re loving this gray silk blend dress from Banana Republic.  The watercolor print is interesting without being distracting (and: bonus points for being vaguely vertical, which is always flattering), and we love the high neckline.  We’d wear it with a fairly structured neutral blazer for work and skin-toned shoes.  It’s $120 at Banana Republic.   Banana Republic Watercolor wrap dress

tThe Limited has a lot of suiting on work pieces on sale right now, and reader K asked for our thoughts on this skirt.  “I think it’s really fun and might be work-worthy with a good button down. Wondering if the ‘petal’ effect might make it too short for the office?”  We do like the look of this piece, and agree with the reader that it looks fun and interesting — although with the obvious caveat that it’s a little short.  If you’re petite, though, or happen to have short legs, this skirt might just hit you at the right point — which we would say would be just at your knee, with the petal part being just above the knee.  (We’re talking centimeters, not inches, here.)  We’d probably wear it with a sweater set rather than a buttoned shirt, but that’s just us.  The skirt is regularly $69, but it’s free with any purchase of a jacket during The Limited’s current promotion.  Petal Pencil Skirt

Reader C wrote in to rave about this dress for the plus-sized readers.  “It’s a great dress, really comfortable and really flattering.  Also, the website says it has an elastic belt, but that’s not true on mine.  Just a regular skinny patent leather belt.”  Nice!  It’s on sale at Lane Bryant — was $80, now $55 online (although reader C notes that she got hers for $44 at the store).   Ponte cowl neck dress

We love this lightweight sheath dress.  The color of the gray feels more spring than fall to us, and the flower applique on the belt helps that impression.  (We’re guessing the belt can be removed pretty easily if you don’t like the look, although you might try to save the flower to wear as a brooch.)  We’d wear it with a structured jacket or, perhaps, a cardigan (the yellow cashmere one from Banana Republic that we featured week or so ago, for example).  It’s $118 at Nordstrom (which just began a shoe clearance, incidentally).  Halogen ‘Night Shift’ Sheath Dress

One of our favorite places to shop when we’re in London is always the Karen Millen store — her clothes are professional with a bit of a sexy twist.  (She’s been in the States for several years now, although for some reason we never think of it when we’re near her New York store, in SoHo.)  In any event — we really like this cotton jacket for the office.  We love the way the stripes play off each other — check out the lapels (diagonal) and the belt (vertical) — without being too busy.  We like the cuff on the jacket, and the low button stance.  Great, interesting look — we’d wear it with a neutral sheath dress (black, we think) and perhaps shoes that matched our skin tone.  It’s $199 at KarenMillen.com.  Tailored Knit Jacket

Great jacket from Nanette Lepore, and we’re curious for your thoughts on this one.  A lot of guys’ jackets have been doing the built-in vest thing for a while now, but this is the first incarnation we’ve seen for women.  We like the overall look — the satin lapels, the tailoring, the high-necked vest, the fact that whatever you wear below will peek out just a bit.  But: can it work for the office?  We think yes — we’d wear it with a white collared blouse and a high-waisted pant or skirt.  The high waist would avoid the appearance of impropriety while keeping the proportions, and the collared blouse would help avoid any “corset” thoughts from the vest.  It’s $428 at Saks.com.  New Moon Jacket

Athleta Pintuck Ponte JumperReader A clued us in to this really cute dress, one of many that’s on sale right now at Athleta.  We like the long length of it, and like the ballerina vibe we’re getting.  We’d probably wear it layered for the office — camisole or turtleneck beneath, with a cardigan or blazer on top of it for the office.  Was $98, now $49.50 at Athleta in sizes XXS-2x and in colors black, gray and brown.  Athleta Pintuck Ponte Jumper

We’re loving this sweet, simple silk blouse from Theory.  The sleeves have the perfect amount (or lack of) pouf, and we like the banded collar.  We also really like the way the blouse kind of looks like either dots or an ocelot pattern, but is more abstract than either of those things up close.  Was $150, now $89 at Nordstrom (available in sizes S, M, L).   Theory ‘Vikie – Choir’ Blouse

Banana Republic Cashmere V-neck cardiganCall us a sucker for a pretty yellow sweater, but we’re loving this one.  Doesn’t the model look happy to be wearing it?  Don’t the gold chains look nice with it?  The sweater’s long one, so be aware that you’ll definitely be rocking the boyfriend/mad professor/doctor’s coat-if-it-were-a-yellow-sweater type of look.  We’d wear it with a white buttoned blouse and gray trousers (or perhaps brown or navy).  Love it.  It’s $140 at Banana Republic.
