Any Tech Problems?

Hi guys — As mentioned earlier we made a big change behind the scenes — we moved servers. The database is large and takes several hours to copy, and then other steps in the process have taken days in the past, so I kind of expected we'd just lose the entire weekend thread — but it turns out we are already up and running on our new, faster server. (Wahoo!) Unfortunately this does mean that we lost about 25 comments from late Thursday night to mid-day Friday, but otherwise things should be back up and running smoothly. If anyone is having any tech problems now, please let me know on this thread.

Thanks!

Update: And… I just realized that we are in fact having some caching problems. I've turned some stuff off, which will hopefully fix the problem for the remainder of Sunday. I also went back and PDFed the entire Weekend Open Thread as it existed on midday 7/4 — I can't restore the comments but hopefully this is an acceptable fix if anyone really wanted the comments/discussions that are missing.

  1. I’ve noticed lately that I get a networked blogs web address and header when I go to this site or click a link to it from fb. It makes it more difficult to post comments (because when you get the posting too fast, refreshing doesn’t help) and is obnoxious. Not sure if you can do anything about that.

    1. Networked Blogs is the service I use to push posts to FB — there are other services (Social Flow, etc) but short of doing it manually I think we’ll always have those problems. Hopefully the new server/developer will help with those posting too fast/refreshing problems. (A big part of the problem is that the entire platform the blog is on — WordPress — apparently has scalability problems when you get to be as big as the blog is, which is why it was time to call in the pros and move to a better hosting company.)

  2. There was discussion in the comments of good professional books to read, like Lean In and NGDGTCO and the Defining Decade. Does anyone know which day that was on? I can’t find via Google. (Or add your own suggestions!)

  3. I’ll be curious to see a couple of things – if it saves our names again. Or if refresh works properly when we post. That has been working only intermittently.

    1. I know — in the next week or so we’re also going to get a special server tuning by the guys who make those caching plugins, so hopefully all of those weird problems will be going away. I’m also hiring a developer to help with the tech stuff… good stuff to come. :)

      1. Kat, this may be a cheesy comment. But I think it is SO COOL that your blog has grown so big that you (1) need to hire a developer; and (2) can afford to hire a developer. This is one of the few blogs I read religiously, keep up the great work!

  4. No matter how many comments are listed on the home page, there are always only 213 comments when I click on the weekend thread. Refreshing doesn’t help. I’m using Safari.

    1. Same here, it says 234 comments on the homepage but when I open the weekend thread it’s only 213 comments.

      1. I think that’s a caching thing — the home page is refreshed less often, but going to/making a comment manually flushes the cache. Or something like that. I don’t really understand it but am told Corporette is at a size where we cannot possibly operate without it. Anyway: hooray for the server tuneup and the developer, both of which will hopefully bring nothing but good things our way.

        1. In the past few weeks I didn’t get all the comments automatically (this started several weeks ago), but they would show up if I refreshed my page. Now even if I refresh I’m still only getting the 213 comments.

          1. again, its because they have been deleted. full convos are gone that were there, and nothing new can be posted.

          2. Just seeing this comment now — there’s no reason you can’t post new comments on old threads. Is anyone having that problem? I posted a “test” post to the Weekend Open Thread after the server move was complete and it’s still there.

          3. Kat, go check again its not there. all new things are being deleted. over 100 comments are gone, and new things stay for a few minutes and then are gone.

          4. I just looked and there are now 241 comments there, including Kat’s test message and the one about mice that came through recently. The problem with new things not “staying” may be more about the issue of refresh not working properly.

          5. If anyone can give me a solid example of a comment that is missing, I’m happy to look for them. I either need specific words in the comment (just a noun or verb that isn’t totally common, such as if you said “apartment” or “Boston” I can go search the spam filter) — or I need an IP address (i.e., for someone to say, “me! I’m missing a comment” then I can get your IP address on the backend.

I just realized that the caching plugin isn’t playing nicely with the new server though — so for the moment I’ve deactivated it and will contact them for help on Monday morning.

          6. The only message I see about mice is from NOLA.
I think I’m also seeing only the 213 or 214 Weekend Open Thread comments that arrived before the move to the new server. (I keep searching for comments dated 07/06 or 07/07. Nada.)
FWIW, I’m on an iMac and using Chrome Version 27.0.1453.116.
I expect it will be OK tomorrow, so not a crisis now, just disappointing that I can’t read everything this weekend. Thanks for working to upgrade the blog.

          7. Kat – there are several posts on the Kuwait question from the open thread that are missing, if that’s helpful.

          8. Hmmmn. I think the entire Kuwait thread was prior to the server switch. Can you guys see the PDF that I posted of the Weekend Open Thread? The Kuwait thread starts on page 60, and looking at the time stamps it seems like all of those were coming from the “dead zone” of comments that can’t be moved over. (For context — moving servers is kind of like moving one large file from one place on your computer to another. The database is so large that it takes 5-6 hours to copy entirely — so from when I gave the “go” signal any comments were going into a part of the file that would not be moved over. This happened the last time (mid-2011) that I had to move servers too.)

I wonder — if people are getting older comments from the “subscribe to comments” feed on Server 1’s version of the Weekend Open Thread, and trying to reply to comments that don’t exist on Server 2’s version of the Weekend Open Thread, if that explains why comments are “disappearing.” It still doesn’t explain why people can’t see the few posts that have been made on 7/5 or 7/6 on the Weekend Open Thread, though.

          9. I had one under the name “To TBK” and I asked her to repeat her photography recommendation for a boston photographer. Both her comment and mine are gone.

          10. I see your comment asking her to repeat her photography recc for a boston photographer — that one is on the current Weekend Open Thread (screenshot here: http://bit.ly/13wFz2P). Did she answer you and that comment disappear? (Her original comment was on the old server and didn’t make the move. Screenshot here: http://bit.ly/1daAJXK).

  5. When I view the weekend open thread, there’s no link to this post–even when I go back via the link on this post. I also had a “networked blog” address initially.

  6. The last comment I can see on the weekend thread was posted the fourth at 5:53. I checked w/ Chrome (my usual browser) and IE.

    1. Same here. Last comment I can see on the Weekend thread was posted 7/4 at 5:53 pm. I’m on an iPad using Safari.

  7. I wasn’t able to get my post to show yesterday, but now when I went and tried posting a test on the open thread, both appeared! So it is working for me now!

  8. The posts on the open thread show for me sometimes but not others. So I went to the page, didn’t see any, refreshed, saw a bunch of new posts, refreshed, and the new posts disappeared.

  9. Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though
you relied on the video to make your point.

You clearly know what youre talking about, why throw away your intelligence on just posting videos to your weblog when you could be
giving us something enlightening to read?
