Bargain Friday’s TPS Report: Ruched Cap Sleeve Top

· ·
Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. Happy Friday! Reader L alerted us to the sale going on at Calvin Klein– lots of good markdowns, plus $25 off if you spend $100. For today's TPS, we're really liking this lovely abstract print (which also comes in blue). We'd keep it simple and wear it with black or, perhaps, white, maybe accented with a pop of a primary color. It's $29 at CalvinKlein.com (was $39). Ruched Cap Sleeve Top (L-0)

  1. I have this top and the cut and material is super-flattering on my 4/6 hourglass figure. It is a bit loose on top and some of you *may* not feel comfortable wearing to work. (Your co-workers may get a peek if you bend over!)

    1. Thanks! (from another size 4/6 hourglss!) — Love the pattern and the price – I used to be really hesitant about elastic-banded cap sleeves, but Ipurchased a shirt recently with them and am really liking – the key is to make sure that they’re not tight on your arm, but that in doing so you haven’t gotten a size that has a neckline that will be obscene :-)

      1. Shayna is there a particular reason why you repeatedly point out that you are a size 4/6? I know you lost a lot of weight recently, and I applaud you for that, but…it’s gotten to the point where I’m sort of surprised when you DON’T bring it up.

        1. I haven’t really noticed her say it. I don’t think it’s particularly wrong to state your size anyway – what looks good on a size 4 isn’t necessarily going to work on someone whos a 14.

As far as ‘showing off’ goes, I feel that there certain regular posters who are far more frequent offenders…(a certain WASP’s blog springs to mine). Given obesity statistics in this day and age, we should be proud of those who manage to reign in their eating issues.

I don’t care much for the top, persoanlly. It looks like it’s jersey and I don’t really like jersey for the office.

          1. I have to agree with both Frump AND Anon. Shayna DOES often mention her weight loss (which is impressive, no doubt). And that certain WASP’s blog IS a frequent offender, indeed.

          2. So Grump lives in the UK, Frump lives in the US, but yet they manage to mistakenly post under the other’s screen name. I’m confused.

        2. I find it helpful to know what size people are when they comment. If they are my size then I know the comment will apply better for me.

          1. It’s just that Shayna makes sure you know what size she is by reminding you again, and again, and again. She lost 80lbs, in case you weren’t aware, and has kept it off for like all of three months now, which makes her an expert in being a size 4/6 and body snarking everyone else.

          2. Agree with Lobbyist. It’s helpful to know a poster’s size/shape if they are commenting on fit. Also, if you are a regular reader, you may pick up details about certain posters, but if you’re new or an irregular reader, you may not.

          3. Anonymous, I have noticed that she mentions this with some frequency, but I assumed it was more out of just being excited about having lost the weight, not to make anyone else feel bad.

        3. Sorry – I mentioned my size b/c I was appreciative of a review that was in that size. When someone says they like something b/c it looks good on them, seeing as we’re all anonymous commenters, its nice to know what they look like – apple/pear/triangle/hourglass whatever shape, size, etc. As so many people here have pointed out, there is no one-style-flatters-all.

Nothing to do with my weight loss I’m afraid.

          1. I really appreciate it when people mention their size because it gives me a better sense of what would look good on me.

        4. You know, YOU brought up her weight loss. Tons of posters mention their size/shape in comments for context, just like Shayna did here.

  2. I like the shape & the neckline. Hate the pattern — not a fan of graphic prints, and this one looks especially grating on the eyes. Plus it’s super synthetic — just thinking about wearing that in the summer is making me want to shower!

    1. I agree – it’s just so common. Every store has something very similar and there’s nothing classic or distinctive that catches my eye. It’s a meh for me.

  3. Ann Taylor one is worth the extra ducats (esp with 30-40% off coupons), IMHO. Classier, better print, better fabric, just cuter.

  4. Hmmm…I’d have to try this one on. Cap sleeves can be less-than-flattering on me, but these look a little longer than a lot of the cap sleeves I’ve seen in the past.

  5. Does anyone know what the sizing is like on that Ann Taylor top that is linked to? Im generally a medium but am tall so want to make sure it is long enough…..thanks!

    1. That top fits fairly true to Ann Taylor sizing – if you usually wear a medium, you should be fine in a medium. This season, most of the Ann Taylor tops are either on the shorter side or abnormally long – this one is on the shorter side, but looks fine on my 5’7 frame.

      1. Thanks much – appreciate it. Think Ill wait until I can find some sort of 30% coupon – though AT Loft is currently offering 40% off through Monday.

      2. Agreed about “regular AT sizing”. I normally wear a size 4 at AT, got this in 4P and, surprise surprise, it’s on the tight side in certain places, so I bet the 4 would have been just right.

  6. Ann Taylor is always the best. Am wearing her this minute. Clothing fits like a glove. You can never go wrong shopping her sales. In general, whoever designs these fabulous mid-priced clothes? All of these designers are forever anonymous. I think they should be FAMOUS and their names should be listed in the catalogs.

    1. I hate to break this to you, 75, but there is no Ann Taylor & never was. Just a corporate name. The brand was founded by a guy named Richard something or other. “Ann Taylor” is the name of the style of a best selling dress that was sold at his father’s store. They picked it b/c Ann sounded waspy & New England, and the Taylor was thought to evoke tailored clothing.

    2. I agree with 75 – it would make things more interesting if the designer were listed with the items. Mini-collections.

    3. Love the old Ann Taylor clothes, but really can’t stand the new designer. The clothes are more expensive, and generally speaking the pants aren’t lined. Also, the cashmere I ordered over the net was one-ply and way too thin and slinky for work at my office. Everything also seems to be lower-cut, and the pants are just as often poly as wool.

Sorry, enough of my ranting. It’s just that I’ve spent several hundred bucks at AT in the last year thinking I was buying the old clothes and came back with a lot of stuff that has disappointed me.

  7. I like the blue version much better, the black and white doesn’t really do anything for me either way. For some reason I mis-read Kat’s description and thought that the blue would be white background with blue pattern, but it’s blue background with black pattern.

  8. I really like this, other than the ruched sleeves. I usually wear a cardigan or (less often) jacket over my shirt and those would create an odd bumpy look under a cardi.
