Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. Pleated Voile Trim TopWe swung by our local Ann Taylor Loft yesterday and loved this bright top. The fabric is similar to a t-shirt, so it's comfortable, but the pleated detailing makes it just a bit interesting for work. It's also available in black, white, and a light, light pink. Was $34, now $23.80 (there's a 30% discount on all full-price tees). 1. I love the trim down the front, but I’m not sure about around the arms — although it would be underneath a suit jacket or cardigan — Thanks for the sale info — the price makes it much more appealing!

  2. I love tops like this that can be worn with a jacket or cardigan at the office or with jeans and fun jewelry on the weekend. Nice pick C!

  3. Pretty color, but I can’t imagine wearing this to work, even under a blazer. Seems too casual for my office.

  4. I think this is adorable!
For those who say too casual…. Why would this be too casual for your workplace with a cardigan on top? Is it the material or the ruffly edges? The color?

    1. Fabric is ok, if it really is as non-sheer as the photo shows. Ruffles down the front are ok. Problems for me would be the ruffles on the arm scye, which would make a cardigan lumpy, and a jacket sit wrong. When you look at it in close-up, the edges of the ruffles appear to be unfinished, so it would shred the first time you washed it. Which on my own time would be fine, and rather pretty, but not for work.

    1. I agree! The color that C has pictured would be beautiful with a black or grey suit! I think this is perfectly appropriate for the office and young and fresh!

  5. It seems like so many of the nice tops are sleeveless. Does everyone always wear a cardigan, even inside your own office? I do, but I always wonder if this is weird. I am extra sensitive about it because I have a large tattoo on my upper arm and I don’t want to be inappropriate. Do you think my colleagues think it’s strange that I always wear sleeves at least to my elbow, even if it is warm and I have a sleeveless top underneath? How do you all wear sleeveless tops at work?

    1. I don’t ever wear sleeveless tops or even short sleeves in the office. It just doesn’t feel appropriate to me to show that much skin. I either wear a suit – jacket on – all day, as do the other women in my office, or I wear a long-sleeve or 3/4 length sleeve sweater, shirt, or cardigan. I would just not ever do sleeveless, and I think it seems a little odd when people do. It would be strange to see a woman walking around my office in a sleeveless shirt.

    2. I don’t wear sleeveless (ever), but I do wear short sleeves in the summer. I usually wind up wearing a cardigan because of the climate control issues in this office (stupid A/C), but I feel fine wearing short sleeve sweater-type shirts or blouses even without the cardigan.

    3. I have a tattoo on my arm too, and I don’t necessarily need to cover it up, but I almost always do. I just don’t think sleeveless is the best look for the office, because my arms are not that toned, my armpits not always shaved, etc. The last thing I want is to wear a sleeveless top and then find myself reaching for a book on the top shelf in front of my boss and wondering if my pits look gross, you know? I will take the sweater off sometimes and no one seems to mind the tattoo, and I definitely see ankle tattoos around the office too.

  6. Love the color!

Question for the group: I just met with a Tom James tailor (referred to me by a friend) and he’s building me a pair of pants. I’m willing to invest once in a good pair as it’s a lightweight wool I can wear with just about anything. Has anyone ever used this group before? I am wondering whether it’s worth having him alter some of my other stuff that doesn’t fit as well. I am a 10 on the bottom and 8 on top, so I tend to buy suits that are a 10. He suggested I have the tops altered so it fits better all over. Thoughts?

    1. Great fitting clothes are priceless, as long as they’re made out of quality fabrics and in a style that will last you several seasons. If you like this guy’s work, then go for it – but balance the cost against how long you think you’ll be that size/like that style/etc…

  7. Perfect for my black suit. I am wearing the same top today, but with sleeves. It is the best piece in my wardrobe.

  8. Although I love the top’s color and appreciated its versatility (from weekend to work) I would avoid this purcahse in favor of something with sleaves so that I would have the option of removing my blazer during the day.

  9. I love the front detailing, but agree with those who’ve noted it will probably start to fray immediately. I also wish it had a short sleeve — it cuts down the dry cleaning costs immensely to have an easy, washable layer in between my deodorant and the jacket/cardi!

  10. Last Friday, after seeing this post, I swung by my local LOFT. Sad to say that this pretty top is too low-cut for me–very noticeable cleavage. I’m about 5’4″/5’5″ and a 30D. Just wanted to warn those who are similarly-sized and who are shopping online.
