Coffee Break: Razor Bootie

Which boots are you guys excited to wear for fall? There are a bunch of them on sale at Nordstrom right now (both in the big Anniversary Sale as well as just on clearance), including options from reader favorites for commutes, such as weatherproof, heavy-hitting brands like Blondo, Aquatalia and La Canadienne.

These boots from Rag & Bone look great — I like the stacked heel, and Rag & Bone boots have consistently been hugely popular since the brand came out about a decade ago (or, at least, hit the mainstream consciousness with their Harlow booties). The pictured boots are available in three colors right now, all temporarily marked down in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale — they're currently $299, but after the sale they'll go back to $495.

  1. Have we discussed Hacks on here? I really, really liked it. The last episode was particularly great.

Also, is anyone watching Physical? It’s kind of hard to watch but I find myself pulled in nonetheless. Thoughts?

    1. Hacks is on my list, and I am loving Physical. Particularly as someone who has taught barre and loves 80s fashion.

I think it’s articulate on these themes, like a novel!
–For women, to what degree is exercise just another mandate of beauty and diet culture? To what degree is it about empowerment, fun, or bonding?
–Your college-sweethearts relationship based on leftist politics may just turn into a super conventional marriage in which you (wife) do all the work, while your husband gets to remain an untamed intellect.
–Women who are obsessed with being thin (Sheila) may be baffled by fat friends who don’t hate themselves (Greta).

      1. Your last comment made me thing – but both Sheila and Greta put up with cr*p husbands who treat them terribly.

  2. In what situation are read receipts on emails necessary and appropriate? I generally dislike them.

    1. It depends. I think everyone dislikes them. I used to get them from the general counsel (I am not an attorney) and I thought that was just some sort of legal record keeping requirement, but then I learned through experience that he was using them to play “gotcha” with me (and others.) So now my impression of someone who insists on read receipts is that they’re a jerk.

      1. Same. I refuse to reply to them. Does Gmail block them? My email is forwarded all to my Gmail box and set up so I can reply from there, and I don’t think I ever see them.

    2. I can’t think of a single positive reason for them. The only times I’ve wanted someone to use them it was because they were non-responsive or generally not reliable.

    3. Only time I think they’re necessary is when you’re required to send a legal notice via email and the notice is effective “upon receipt” — need it for litigation that inevitably follows but nothing else.

    4. My office auto turns them on and we cannot turn them off. I hate them. I have a rule set up in outlook so all the ones I receive automatically go into the trash without going through the inbox.

    5. They’re completely passive-aggressive. Which is warranted sometimes, but I do not use them. Most of my colleagues don’t either; those who do stand out in a very negative way.

  3. These boots — what do you wear them with? Mom jeans? Skinnies? Flares? I think of short booties with skinnies, but these might just look odd. Not dresses, I’m guessing. But need to think through my footwear situation before it gets cold enough to break out the denim (my workplace is denim and corduroy OK).

    1. These look versatile. I’d wear these with cropped mom jeans or kick crop flares, or bootcut jeans that hit the top of my foot, or casual flowy dresses. Lots of examples on pinterest I bet.

    2. I have short legs so have entirely ignored the bootie trend! I would wear these only under bootcut or slightly flared jeans hemmed to graze the top of my foot.

Others who are trendier than me would wear them with any variety of cropped, ripped, “mom” denim, but that’s not me.

  4. It’s the hottest day of the year in my city. I will look at those boots longingly.

I am basically wearing socially acceptable pajamas to work today: loose wide-leg pants, rayon tank, sandals, cardigan when others pop by my office. It’s too hot. I cannot.

    1. Would you recommend the loose wide-leg pants? I wore my only pair yesterday and thought that I seriously needed more.

  5. Has anyone become more active on the weekends in an intentional way that still felt relaxing? Like my husband and I would like to go hiking more but we don’t want to rush out the door first thing on Saturday — but if we don’t Netflix gets us.

    1. It’s hot right now so I’m loving early weekend swims in my neighborhood pool before it gets busy.

    2. I’m doing it with both exercise and volunteering now — out before it gets hot on the weekends. And then allow myself to lounge around later if I really want to. I love the idea of relaxing and easing in to the day, but I find that when I do so, it is 3pm and I am still easing…toward nothing. Committing to getting out early and then being lazy later (even if I wind up not being lazy) leads to a happier weekend for me. Some weekends, though, the best solution is out early on Saturday and then completely lazy on Sunday so I get the best of both worlds.

    3. I love a huge city walk on summer evenings. Can walk for 2-3 hours after work before it starts getting dark out, maybe pick up takeout or stop for a picnic along the way. It’s a great way to explore new neighborhoods.
