Endless has a bunch of great sales right now — lots of great brands on sale including Kate Spade, L.A.M.B., Cole Haan, and more. Today I'm liking these simple geometric flats from Delman. The red patent is cheerful and bright, and the closed toe helps make the other cut-outs more appropriate for a conservative office. The flats were $250, now marked to $137.50 at Endless. Threadjack/PSA- Ann Taylor is having a 40% off your entire purchase promotion online and in store. I
just picked up 2 more pairs of their “perfect pumps.” I can tolerate a slightly higher heel, and find these comfortable to work in, but recommend going down a half size.

“PSA” — haha, love it.

Cute shoe in theory but in practice I can’t seem to make a perforated shoe work. For the weekend with jeans – fine, but even for my casual office it seems wrong for me.
Besides, lately even my “flats” have to have a bit more of a heel or else I have this searing pain in my foot. Sigh…
Ru
I’m the same way. I’ve noticed that putting in arch support shoe inserts really go along way to alleviating foot pain in super flat shoes. Maybe it’ll help you.
UnSub
Thanks. I’ll give it a try. Anything to get back to all my lovely flats!
d
Do you think it’s plantar fascitis? I had that only when I was wearing flats or sneakers…got some more “special” gel inserta for that, with curved footbeds and it really helped…made it go away. Seemed strange to have sore feet only in flats…but this helped. Good luck.

For my office this shoe is too casual, except in summer, and then I would be wearing something more like a sandal if I want open.

Wait to cold to even think of wearing these puppies now!

argh, meant “way too cold”

I want these shoes, but do NOT want to pay this much for them. Aren’t they available somewhere at a discount?

Need advice: My new paralegal screwed up something pretty big (as in, its now passed the court filing deadline and cannot be fixed). She is normally very competent and this error was due to a miscommunication with a person she supervises, who misunderstood her directions. I didn’t follow up, she didn’t follow up, and now it’s too late.
She feels terrible and embarrassed, and has been avoiding me all day. I feel mad, but understand that (1) nothing can really be done about it now, (2) this is out of character for her and not evidence of a larger performance issue. Not mad at her so much as mad at the situation which puts me in a worse place with my case, and also with the partner who supervises me and trusted me to get this thing on file.
The case and partner issues I can manage. But, how do I handle this with the paralegal? Is just pulling her into the office and saying, I know you feel bad, sh*t happens, and leave it at that? I feel like I need to say something, but since it isn’t really performance related, she already feels bad, and the mistake will never happen again, do I need to?
stc
I think if I was in her position, I would really appreciate it if someone pulled me and gave me that message. Feeling scared and avoiding someone is awful and she would probably have a good sense of relief if you do that.
Laura
I would say something to her. I think it’s infinitely worse to know you messed something up and not have it addressed, as opposed to having someone say something to you and also say they are moving on.
If I were you, I’d tell her that you get what happened, it’s frustrating/upsetting, but it ultimately doesn’t undermine your confidence in her ability to do the job well (assuming this is the case–sounds like it is).
You say that this will never happen again but you also mentioned something about not following up. If it’s a one-off thing, I wouldn’t say anything, but if it’s a situation where something similar could happen again (e.g. she should follow up), it might be worth re-enforcing that in a non-paternalistic way.
I am now having recollections of my parents “seizing the teachable moment” :) Seriously, though, I would say something to her–it’s worth it to clear the air.
chis
I’ve been in this poor girl’s position in the past – PLEASE talk to her! It will be so wonderful for her to know precisely what you wrote here: “(1) nothing can really be done about it now, (2) this is out of character for her and not evidence of a larger performance issue. Not mad at her so much as mad at the situation…” All of those comments should be relayed to her.
Anonymous
Yes, that’s the perfect thing to say to her. She’s probably scared of getting fired. She’ll feel a lot better if she knows you see it as an aberration and you’re not mad at her.

Also, you can always file a motion for relief from a deadline. I live in a very liberal state and these are granted all the time. They could even sign affidavits that is clerical error and that your client should not be prejudiced due to it. Generally, Courts will see this as “good cause” and accept your late submission.

Business card question. I’m a currently-un(under?)employed May 2010 law graduate (I have a low-paid internship). I have realized I probably need business cards for networking events, because nothing is more awkward than having to jot down your email on a cocktail napkin, but what do I put on them? Though I’ve passed the bar, I’m not admitted yet (New York is taking their sweet time), so I can’t really put “Attorney” or any other title under my name. Do I just have name, e-mail, phone number? Or should I put “New York Bar Admission pending,” or something similar, somewhere on the card? No one seems to have design suggestions for business cards for the unemployed…
JessC
I had business cards made for the period between graduation and starting work. Though I was able to get admitted to my state bar without issue, it was still several months after I had the cards made before I was officially an attorney. In addition to my name and contact info, I had my schools (law and undergrad) with degree and graduation date.
The design was something like:
-Name appeared at the top (where a firm or company name would typically appear) with a decorative line underneath it
-On the top left (under the decorative line) was school/degree/grad date info.
-On the bottom right was contact info.
My name was in the biggest font, school/degree info in the next biggest, and contact info one size smaller than school/degree.
I had mine printed on VistaPrint. Decent quality and fairly inexpensive.
Jay
Put “NY state bar admission pending” or something like that–first year associates do that routinely in their email signatures until the admission comes through.
Good luck!

I’d put your degree and law school (can’t hurt if you run into someone who went to your school) and New York Bar Admission pending, or Passed New York Bar Exam, something like that.

Thanks, everyone!

Threadjack and redux:
On the topic of ‘what to wear to the gym’ – I am wondering if it is all right for the sports bra (think pullover champion like sold at Target) shows…I picked up a pullover cami with racerback straps (that are like spaghetti straps) and it has that useless (for me) attached piece of fabric for a “self bra.” Due to extreme medical malpractice w/hormones, I am never again to be my 34B. At 40 years old I became a 34DD or a 36d. Over a decade later (gosh) and despite stable hormones (better living through chemistry and a hysterectomy), there is just nothing to be done. Big and floppy, tmi, I know. They need a sports bra. So can I wear the sports bra with the cami like thing on top or do I need to stay with my assortment of t shirts.
This is a walk in fitness place, frequented by high school athletes after school, college athletes when home, moms, even those senior citizens…a wide variety. Haven’t seen anyone other than the too-think looking college girls have their separate straps showing.
Just want to do the right thing. Not that I’m looking nor available, nor interested in my appearance at the gym, but the right, modest, appropriate thing. Love some advice.
for a laugh … one day during the holiday week, there was the too thin college gal (w/area uni on her shirt). Apparently two of the college guys there were friends/acquaintances from high school (last year). It was the four of us in there, early in the morning. The guys were chatting her up. They had already decided to meet that evening. Well, they DID know each other. So one looks at her and says, “I really like that sweat you have there.” I could have fallen off the eliptical, trying to be quiet. I should get much more flirting, if it’s a sweat thing!
Cute.
Louise
I think it is fine for the straps of a sportsbra to show under a cami at the gym. The bra is clearly for exercising, and the cami over the top gives it a bit of modesty.
Just for future reference, you might rethink labeling someone “too thin.” Many folks, especially when in college, are just naturally thin and athletic. I know there are a lot of women here on Corporette who are slender and they can feel bad by being singled out for a remark like this. I’m sure you meant no hard, though.
For reference, I am with you in the “floppy and not much we can do about it” category. Thank goodness for Spandex! :-)
Louise
That would be “I’m sure you meant no harm”…
e
Yes, I meant no harm. It is probably my therapist’s eye and heart reaching out to them. I truly meant no harm.
Yes, love that spandex. I was sold a rigorous, boned, sports bra at my lingerie store. it was fine, standing around there but when I wore it on a hike, oh the marks and soreness on the torso. Beats me. So just spandex for the work out ones u nless someone can really recommend something.
again, my hearfelt apologies!
Jay
Definitely okay to have the separate straps showing. I would not look twice at anyone of any size “sporting” (ha!) that look.
houda
I think support should be your main concern. If the bra underneath shows, it’s OK. Just try to make it coordinate or compliment the top that you’re wearing.
My own TMI, I have “highly pointy” breasts, so I wear a bra under the bra tops.
Usually, I would just go for coordinating colors: purple bra for a pink top or white with teal etc. I think it looks cute, and definitely I look I would go for over the university t-shirt.
Corporate Tool
I’m a fairly large-breasted woman with a small back (think 32-34E), and I can rarely find sports bras that are perfect. Really the only one is a sugoi RSR bra. I usually end up wearing a sports bra with a cami/tank over it, that has a built-in shelf bra. Between the two I’m supported and comfortable without constricting, rubbing, or annoying tension marks.
Secondly, I wouldn’t worry about visible straps at the gym. I dress in what might be kindly referred to as “prision guard on her day off” attire. I see women wearing everything from loose tees to really tight, matchy outfits, and it seems to be all good. But if you feel uncomfortable, switch to tees and see if that works better.
Anonymous
I wear a 34G and my sports bra is so substantial that about an inch of it actually shows over the top of my cami, in addition to the straps and racerbacki. I sweat too much to wear a t-shirt. It’s the gym, no one cares. So long as there’s not cleavage all over the place it’s perfectly modest. A sports bra isn’t as “underwear-y” as a regular bra.

So I’m going to Wisconsin next week for a series of work meetings. I’m from a climate where it just doesn’t get that cold and could use some advice.
1) Are off-black hose the way to go? (I wore nude to a recent hearing in West Virginia and clearly looked like an idiot to the locals, all of whom were in warm tights.)
2) We’re planning on walking the 5-7 blocks between our hotel and the meeting site. Can I wear boots and then switch into heels when I get there or do I really need some kind of flat that I can just slip into my bag?
3) Anything else I should be prepared for?
Thanks all!
Anon
I’m in Minnesota, not Wisconsin but the climate is similar enough (actually, a little bit colder here). It is very cold up here. When checking the temperature, don’t forget that if there’s wind out the wind chill will make it feel much colder than it already is. Black or off-black tights would be fine if you’re a skirt person. If you wanted to wear pants instead that would be fine as well. I would absolutely bring the boots. If the skies (and sidewalks) are clear and it’s not too cold you could probably get away with wearing a pair of flats. However, if there is snow accumulation of any significance while you’re there you don’t want to be slogging through 5-7 blocks of snow. It will get into your shoes and soak through your tights and then likely re-freeze in the cold air and you will be absolutely miserable. Don’t forget a warm coat, hat, scarf, and gloves!
ddd
Minnesotan here. Black tights are fine, and people regularly wear boots for commuting then change into nicer shoes. I make a stop in the restroom every morning to take off the various layers of commuting clothes, fix hat hair, etc. before walking into the office.
Have fun! Try some cheese curds. They taste more delicious than they sound.
