I’ve been using the same desk lamp since the mid-2000s. While durable, it doesn’t do much besides turn on and off.
OttLite’s LED Emerge Sanitizing Desk Lamp with USB Charging is a lamp for our times — its “SpectraClean’s patented technology has been shown to kill potentially harmful bacteria like those prevalent on mobile phones and desktops.”
It has three brightness settings and modes (so you can turn off the germ-killing technology), touch activated controls, and a USB port to charge your devices. It’s also adjustable and “features the eyestrain-reducing power of ClearSun LED technology.”
This lamp will definitely enhance any remote (or not-remote) office setup.
The desk lamp is $64.99 at Target.

I have to fill out one of those corporate self review/growth type things and one of the required questions is “What is your untapped skill?” Uh, if I knew what it was, I’d be tapping it. What would you put for this question?
Cat
Hmm – I’d read that as “what skill do you think you could offer to the company but the company isn’t taking advantage of it” more than “what skill do you not know you actually have.”
Anon
I read it this way too, but I still can’t think of anything
anonshmanon
would it help to reframe as what is not really part of your job description, but you’d enjoy doing more? It would be public speaking for me.
Anonymous
I would read this as ‘how can we squeeze even more labour from you without paying you more’ and thus would put a BS answer. When I was an admin (before I finished my degree) my ex-boss tried to make me do high level data analysis for my whopping salary of $13/h I laughed and declined.
Anon
This is a good take. I retract my tech answer below, that’s just an invitation to get devops dumped on you.
Monday
Taking this into account, it makes sense to think of this question as “what’s something outside your job description that you enjoy doing, or would like to be recognized for doing, at your current pay rate, and maybe in lieu of some of your current duties?” If nothing fits the bill, then BS it.
Anon
I have a lot of tech skills that aren’t applicable in my dinosaur company. Anything in that genre would do.
Anon
If you are not in management and want to be, I’d put management type skills. Motivating others, providing constructive feedback, project management.
Anon
This seems incredibly gimmicky and dubious.

lol, Patented SpectraClean™ Visible Light Disinfection my ass. We used to say sunlight is the best disinfectant. Even if you remove the more powerful component (the UV light), the visible light still will kill *some* little germs. Maybe your desk will be more sanitary than if you left it in the dark, though not as much as if you allow some daylight (with UV still in it) to shine on it.

I would love to see those studies.

For lawyers with in-person CLE requirements (NJ) — what are you doing to keep up with that? I think we were OK in 2020 but do you think we’ll be able to do online ones in 2021 (largely: rewatching old ones or bad zoom ones but I’m grateful for whatever).
Anonymous
It’s 2021 now and we are still allowed to fulfil the in person requirements online. Idk why you’re worried about this.
Anon
I guess the thing to do is do all your hours now in case they change it on a going-forward basis later in the year.
Cat
Isn’t NJ’s in-person relief simply valid until further notice? I would just keep doing live online CLEs.
Anon
I need some diversity & inclusion hours — does anyone know of any good ones, especially if available on PLI (I can watch those for free, so admin favors it)?

A job has gone up on our internal job board, applying my area of specialism to a very different part of our organisation… oh and it’s one band up in our structure. I think I’m going to apply – please wish me luck!
CHL
You go! In our organization, it would also be appropriate to use your network to reach out to the hiring manager or someone in that area to have coffee (virtually, I guess) to learn more.
Ribena
Yes, it’s appropriate in mine too. I have dropped the hiring manager a message but as the open window closes later this week time is of the essence!

When you select a new therapist, how much does age, gender, race, marital status, etc factor into your decision? Do you look for someone similar to you, different, or has that never factored in? I realized I’ve always ended up with married, female therapists slightly older than me. I need to find a new therapist and I wonder if I might get different benefits from working with someone a little outside my comfort zone.
Anon
Maybe it’s because I don’t live in a big city, but I’ve never had the luxury of being that picky. Providers are not that prevalent here.
Anon in NY
I do live in a big city and have never had the luxury of being that picky! Typically, I look for whoever will take insurance. My insurance covered a big hospital group, so I called them, and they assigned me someone based on (1) the specialty I needed and (2) availability.
Anonymous
I always look for therapists who share my value system. Otherwise I find myself being gaslighted by my therapist’s biases. It’s exhausting enough to deal with random people telling me their viewpoints on my lifestyle, I don’t want that from my therapist too.
Anon
Agreed. I need to talk about sexism, the patriarchy, and male violence in therapy and have her understand and support me.
Monday
I can’t imagine having a male therapist. I accept the fact that sometimes I have to call out or mistrust men in my family or workplace, but therapy is somewhere I shouldn’t have to navigate that dynamic at all.
Anon
I have had a male therapist for the last 5 years. I was dubious at first, but he is hands down the best therapist I have ever seen. I have never felt like I was navigating gender dynamics. In fact, he helped me a lot when I was struggling with my emotions around the 2016 election and Kavanaugh confirmation. I feel like he listens to me and offers much more helpful advice than any female therapist I have seen.
Senior Attorney
Completely agree about this. I saw a guy for years before I realized he was totally gaslighting me about my then-husband’s completely unacceptable behavior.
My current guy is younger than I, of a different ethnicity, unmarried, and, well, a guy. But we share the same general world view and it’s made a world of difference. (Actually I’ve graduated but I still feel like he’s my therapist — he’s there if I need him.)
Anon
I think this might be my central problem with therapy. I’ve never seen (or honestly even met) a therapist whose value system matched up very well with my own. We have such different backgrounds.
Anon
so i’ve always had and only wanted female therapists. i will say that in my experience and i’ve seen a number of therapists throughout my life, those who are the same race as me have been a better fit. maybe this makes me a horrible person, but i once ‘tried out’ a black female therapist and i was so worried about saying the wrong thing that i thought it would impede our conversations. what i’ve sought out at different stages of life has also been different. seeing a therapist when dealing with PPA/PPD who was childless, honestly, wasn’t that helpful. i only stuck with her because she was convenient and covered by my insurance. when i saw a therapist in my 20s, she was probably closer to my parents’ age. generally i do not want someone younger than me (i’m mid 30s) and i assume as i get older, if i want to see a therapist it will over time have to be someone younger than me, but for now, i prefer someone older
arnette
To a large extent, no. I’ve had mostly women therapists, but many of my (also Asian-American) friends have looked for Asian therapists, and I’ve never needed to. I’ve found that “midwestern middle aged lady” therapists have understood even the cultural issues just fine and been able to help me through them. I do think a woman over a man might be a bit easier.
Anon
I am not white and I believe racism and sexism have impacted my life so my goals have been to find someone who understands those life experiences so I don’t have to waste time explaining the context of a micro (or macro) aggression.
more generally, I was having difficulties with finding a partner so I wanted someone who had experience in relationships and attachment styles.
Anonymous
Did it help? The relationship piece?
Shananana
I was talking to a friend about that the other day actually. I have found I prefer someone who is similar in age to myself, but have two friends who have chosen replacement mother figures and one has essentially a replacement father figure. I always looked to peers and those just slightly above me for advice, and find when I spoke to someone in a parental age range I ended up feeling like I was being talked down to. I cringe at being parented as a 40 year old adult. . But, I think there is something to thinking about if there are certain people you are more willing to take advice/feedback from than others.
Anon
My current and only therapist is basically my mom if my mom were liberal. I find her very comforting, and because we share a similar value system, I feel she understands me as well.
Anon
Not a lot, but I think the reason I see a therapist is to lay out the problem, suggest my own solution, and pay the therapist for nodding supportively.
Anon
This cracked me up.

What’s everyone having for dinner tonight? I think I’m going to try the skinnytaste baked scallops.

Taco Tuesday with Beyond Beef!
Anonymous
It’s Taco Tuesday at my house too! We interpret “taco” loosely and are having the Half Baked Harvest Cool Ranch Chicken Tostadillas. They are kind of high-maintenance to make and a big mess to eat but so good. This reminds me that I need to put on my taco pajamas and avocado socks before I cook dinner.
anon
Lol I love absolutely everything about this — gonna check out that tostadilla recipe!

I have salmon thawing that I might make salmon cakes with instead of just baking. It makes the house smell greasy for a bit from the frying. I really like it with this habanero tomatillo hot sauce we have

Homemade pizza! Roasted chicken with cilantro/jalapeno sauce for Hubby and me; tomatoes, pepperocini, and vegetarian chorizo for my son and his roomie, who are joining us for dinner now that we are all vaccinated!

Yes and we ate INSIDE THE HOUSE!!

This doesn’t exactly bolster my rep as a foodie, but we have a ton of leftover French fries from a dinner a few days ago, which we’re planning to cut up into hash browns with eggs and bacon (and maybe cheese and avocado). Not fancy, but easy and tasty.
Horse Crazy
Are you kidding me?? That sounds So. Effing. Good.

Roasted cauliflower soup and freshly-baked bread :)
Ribena
I had leftover veggie shepherd’s pie from the freezer (thought it was bean chilli, whoops), with the end of a garlic bread baguette also from the freezer, and peas (from the freezer…)
Anon
We have been eating bizarre combinations to empty the freezer and defrost it. Tonight we are having frittata made with (Easter) ham cubes and whatever frozen vegetables I find on the bottom shelf.
Anonymous
This doesn’t sound so odd. Got any asparagus? That would be delicious. Spinach? Even peas. Those are all things I’d make intentionally.
Anon
This is Easter or 2020, for the ham? If it was the Easter that occurred less than 10 days ago, I am madly impressed with your freezer control skills.
Anon
Easter 2020!

No idea. I meal planned the whole week – both lunch and dinner – and purchased accordingly. I ate at work yesterday and now I cannot remember what I am supposed to be making. I think there may be something wrong with me. I can’t keep a thought on my head these days.
Anonymous
I can’t keep a thought in my head either, which is why I keep them all on paper.
Anonymous
Yeah. There is a paper. But I do not know where that paper is either.
Anonymous
I keep a list in the “notes” section of my phone that lists what is for dinner everyday. I also share it with my family because otherwise each person asks me constantly what is for dinner haha.
Anon
White bean soup/stew with leftover ham and some fresh chard from the garden. Lots of garlic. Maybe some cornbread (southern style with buttermilk and no sugar)
Aunt Jamesina
Omelettes and roasted vegetables. I’m so burned out and it’s only Tuesday :-/
Not that Anne, the other Anne.
Microwaved leftover casserole and a bagged salad because I have no stove.
I really miss my stove.
(Mid kitchen renovation. The stove will return by the end of the week, hopefully.)

Ginger lime salmon with roasted broccoli and rice. Got the recipe from a former HelloFresh box, surprisingly love it that I’ve made it at least twice on my own, to be thrice. Ingredients are fairly easy to find or substitute
Anonymous
And in case anyone is interested in the rest of my meal plan for the week
– Korean Crispy Pork Belly Bowl, recipe from Woks of Life
– Thai green curry with additional vegetables and chicken with rice (I cheat and use the ready-made Maesri cans)
– Roasted bell peppers and onion with sausage and penne arrabbiata from Trader Joe’s
– Sautéed bok choy with five-spice tofu, tomatoes, maybe some mushrooms with spicy doubanjiang for flavor, plus rice or noodles depending on how I feel (also adapted from a meal plan box)
– possibly some frozen Korean dumplings plus whatever vegetables I feel like stirfrying or blanching that day. Or roasted broccoli again.
Good luck
This all sounds so wonderful.
Can I come?

Somebody brought up vaccine passports in the morning thread. I am still working remotely, and haven’t done air travel, so I haven’t encountered any. I heard that my employer isn’t mandating the vaccine, but once vaccines are available to all, will allow restricting on-site social distancing rules for vaccinated staff. I am curious what others have encountered, at work or as customers, in terms of vaccination passports.
Anonymous
My undergrad university (private) is going to require it for in-person students in the Fall. I think it’s a little trickier since it’s under an EUA, but once it’s fully approved, I don’t see how it’s any different than requiring the other various vaccines they already require. And I’ve had to show proof of vaccination to get visas for foreign travel before (yellow fever, mainly). Not sure what my office is going to do–as of right now, they’re just encouraging people to get it and we’re still remote.
anonshmanon
sorry, what I meant to write was that once all have access to the vaccine, they will allow _relaxing_ social distancing at my workplace.
Cat
We are planning international travel for later this summer and there are different rules for vaxxed vs. non-vaxxed visitors.
