‘Tis the season to start thinking about sending food gifts to close friends and family who live afar. We traditionally trade gifts with my husband's uncle and aunt, who live in Texas — and while Harry & David or the like are always fun, Goldbelly has definitely added some fun options to the mix. (Warning: It's very easy to get into sucked into the site and find yourself drooling over various things!)
I was excited to see New York City staple Magnolia Bakery join Goldbelly — now you can send a huge tub of banana cream pudding to family members far away. The pictured “64 oz. party bowl” is $56, but if you don't want to overwhelm a family member's fridge you can always send this pack of 16 oz. containers.
(They also have a ton of options for Goldbelly gift cards!)
Readers, are you familiar with any of the shops or dishes on Goldbelly? In general, what do you send for food-related gifts for friends and family?
(Psst: two related stories from our past: cookie cards and the best of-the-month-club subscriptions!)

I’ve never sent Goldbelly specifically, but I’ve definitely sent food gifts. Usually ordering from a local place instead of Goldbelly. I know there was a thread a while back about whether or not people send gifts like this, and there were some comments about it being a “rich lady” thing to do. My friends and I definitely don’t fall in that category, and most of the things sent are either split between people or just not that expensive.
– Local donuts and a cake from a good bakery to my sister on her birthdays
– Snack care packages to again my sister and to a friend who had a death in the family while having a tough time at work
– Fancy breakfast to a friend who was very busy at work
– Champagne and fancy bakery macarons to a friend who was promoted
– Honestly my friends and I sent each other food on our birthdays, usually as a group, a lot over the pandemic.
– An uncle sent me a charcuterie board on my birthday
– A friend sent me donuts when I had a tough work situation

I don’t send food gifts (though the banana pudding is tempting….as a gift for myself ;) ). However my family grew up with Topsy’s popcorn (from Kansas City) and I’ve ordered that for special occasions. My lovely SIL comes from Chicago so now we know about the Garret Chicago Popcorn too. Delicious and easier to ship than perishable foods.

I do food gifts specifically for relatives who moved away from the area and no longer have access to the specific micro-ethnic regional food we like. But that’s me going to a specific Oma and Opa-owned hole-in-the-wall, buying a meal and dessert, wrapping it with cool packs in a cooler, and shipping it myself. Not a slick website type of deal.

Nice! I want to be your friend :-)

I do Goldbelly somewhat frequently. I sent ny bagels and lox to a NJ friend in Pittsburgh whose infant son had a scary operation. The whole family loved it. I also sent whoopie pies my central Pennsylvania at heart bestie who lives in Florida. I’m pretty confused as to why this would be a rich person thing to do.it’s frivolous but aren’t these type of gifts always frivolous? I dislike clutter so I tend to gift consumables.

I love sending food gifts–it’s nice to make sure it’s not just going to take up space in the person’s house forever. I really love Zingerman’s.
newbie IL ipass question
Can someone who uses this regularly tell me if I am missing something here?
We drove I-80 past Chicago for Thanksgiving and owe two very minimal tolls from that trip. I set up a pay by plate account online, found the tolls, connected my credit card, and the payment says it has been pending ever since. I am nearly 14 days out from the first toll and want to avoid fines, so I then went into the trip calculator and entered the plaza info for both tolls, my plates, paid the total amount due, received a receipt. However, when I log in it still shows under my activity for my vehicle that my tolls on my account are owing. I don’t want to assume it will all connect eventually, but I also don’t want to get fined for a toll I have indeed paid. Is there something else I need to do?
TIA!

I don’t live in your area. But when I had an issue with EZ Pass, even though it was my fault (like, I forgot I had a new vehicle and hadn’t transferred the EZ Pass tag yet), I just called them up and explained and they removed the $50 fine.

I would take it up with your credit card. Show them the receipt that you paid the tolls and have them cancel out the pending charge.
OP
Sorry, I was unclear. It’s pending in the ipass system, not with my credit card. I paid once with my card and got an email receipt, but ipass doesn’t seem to have connected it to my account or applied it to the tolls that show as “payment pending” when I log in.

My experience is that they are extremely slow. They —— eventually —- billed me, and then assessed late charges. Because they were late. Shrug. I paid.
Super anon - lawyer in Chicago recommendation?
Thanks all for your comments and thoughts on the am thread.
Wondering if anyone has a stellar lawyer to help me with a post nup and help prepare for whatever is to come (divorce or staying together)?
I would prefer a woman and would prefer someone who is not aggressive as a personality but is aggressive in protection. I am the higher earner but we both earn over six figures so financially it’s not a bad situation.

I left you a long comment about self blame and therapy that sat in m0d for a while. I hope you check back.
I don’t have recs for an attorney but I’m glad you’re going that route.
Super anon
I am reading every comment. I go back to my previous posts also – I will be thinking about todays comments for a long time.

Low stakes question unrelated to delicious banana pudding: any nail polish colors you’ve been loving that are “in”? I have light skin with olive undertones and am looking to refresh. I’ve been into Essie Gel’s Gala-Vanting (a good sparkly deep magenta) and Jewels and Jacquard Only (a nice deep blue-emerald!).

I just saw someone post about how 1 coat of Funky Monkey and 2 coats of bubble bath (both OPI gel) is “the perfect baby pink”

Is there ever a way to tell your boss that you’re feeling burned out and under-appreciated? In this post-pandemic world, aren’t we all? But really, I’m tired of pulling together small miracles and nobody really noticing or caring until something doesn’t go 100% according to plan. My boss is a very stoic type who rarely complains, so a large part of me thinks it’s not worth bringing up, lest I be labeled a whiner. Some of the things I need to change are just very unlikely to happen and not within her control.

Maybe we do need office moms and grandmothers? You aren’t wrong. Boss is just wired differently than you are.

I understand this feeling. If you haven’t made specific requests, try it–if you’re short-staffed or a lot of people have left recently, you may have more leverage than you think. Otherwise, sadly, I find that they most appreciate employees like this when they finally give up and leave. That’s why I am writing this from my new job.

Yup. IMO it’s worth at least looking around. I asked for help and support for years, got none, and left for a 50% raise.

What the other posters said. Speak with your feet.

I’m right there with you. I have pulled off so many “small miracles” and I occasionally get a “nice job!” and I know they’d be upset if I left, but I need more recognition and for there to be accountability for the poor performers whose asses I’m saving. I’m beginning a job search.

I send Graeter’s ice cream from Cincinnati, Ohio. It’s my favorite and Oprah agrees.

Graeter’s is sold in many grocery stores. I’m several states away from Ohio and we have a bunch of flavors in our local supermarkets.
