Coffee Break: Giza 45 Sheets

So: I do not have these sheets. I have not FELT these sheets. But these sheets are on my radar after my last round of research on the best sheets. Why am I researching the best sheets? I have far too many; this is clearly a sign of pandemic anxiety and craziness on my part. (I am an EXPERT at wasting time.)
But: I have recently researched sheets. In one article, a New York Times reporter who is involved in Wirecutter testing called in some of the fanciest sheets she could find, ranging from $1,000–$2,000. She concluded, “But though the $1,000 Frette Doppio Ajour and Sferra Giotto sets cost about five times as much as our upgrade sheet pick, they don’t feel five times better. The $2,000 Giza 45, however, is absolutely 10 times better.”
Ohhhh. Well. So I dutifully shopped around to see where I could find these sheets… even though I don't need them! I don't like white sheets anyway! But, you know, just in case.
So I feel a little duty-bound to tell you: the amazing sheets are on sale. Specifically, 25% off today! And you can double InCircle points by using your Neiman Marcus credit card. Allrighty then. Have I mentioned that I do not need sheets and do not like white sheets? Yet I am tempted all the same.
Fitted and flat sheets are sold separately; each are now $502–$600 for Queen and King (normally $670–$800); sets of pillow cases are $281–$311 (normally $375–$415).

Psst: My favorite, more reasonably-priced sheets for summer include Lands' End linen sheets and L.L.Bean's percale sheets. (N.B. that linen sheets aren't for everyone!) If you're on the hunt for winter sheets, the heavier flannels are the best, including Eddie Bauer's Portuguese flannel (generally 5.4 oz.), Lands' End (5 oz.–6 oz.), and Garnet Hill. Hunting for the best sheets on a budget? These are reader favorites!

I’ll stick with my cotton percale from the Company Store, thanks….
I ordered the Zella dress from the weekend thread and am reporting in that it is very nice in person and especially nice for $40. Fabric definitely has a bit of a ‘tech fabric’ sheen to it, but it’s flattering on. I got the blue thistle color which is a lovely light periwinkle. 34C, size S is perfect and hits this shortie right around the knee.
Good to know! I have the olive coming.
I ordered the coral but the order was canceled! :(
Does Kat get credit if we go buy it now but don’t click back to that original post?
No, if you don’t go through the link, how would they know you’re buying it on her recommendation?
If you clicked on it last week, the cookie may still be hanging around? Not sure how the specific affiliate links K-t uses work.
I commented late the other day, but I got this a couple weeks ago and love it. It’s comfy, I like the silhouette a lot, and the pockets are great.
I’m looking to buy my parents a gift card to a nice restaurant in Bozeman, MT for my dad’s milestone birthday. Suggestions? No dietary restrictions and cost isn’t a concern either – my siblings and I are splitting it so we have plenty of money to spend.
Blackbird or Open Range are great options, and if they like steak Open Range is the best option. Fieldings is in the new Armory Hotel and is supposed to be really good – I haven’t tried it yet but will soon. (And there’s a rooftop there – not sure if it’s part of the restaurant or a separate bar, but could be a fun part of the experience depending on time of year.) I wouldn’t bother with Squire House (it’s underwhelming). Copper and Sweet Chili are also underwhelming – I’d pass on those.
Urban Kitchen is fun and the food is mostly very good (I’ve had a few hit or miss experiences there but I still like it). Montana Ale Works is a solid option but it’s more casual. Feast is great but it’s not on or near Main Street (it’s a little south – not far though). Actually Feast is probably my favorite restaurant here right now.
Happy to provide more recommendations if you’d like!
When I was in Bozeman recently I tried and was disappointed not to be able to get into South 9th Bistro. Would be curious if someone local would recommend it.
+1 for Feast. We took my in-laws there for their significant anniversary two years ago and it was fabulous!
This is absurd.
I teach a single class at a college near me, and I’d like to bike commute. Anyone have any pants (or other attire) that would work for a bike commute plus teaching without changing? I’m mostly worried about wrinkling and tightness. It doesn’t seem worthwhile to change to teach for 50 minutes, but my current pants don’t have enough give (it will be cold, so probably no on skirts, and no, I won’t need bike shorts).
FWIW, I think of bike commute as transportation vs exercise, so I have some woven (vs stretchy) elastic-waist Athleta pants (they always have a mode on offer, mine are from different years) that would work. BUT to get me to either close college is also about 2 miles and flat (with some danger from light rail tracks that your wheel can get caught on).
I was going to suggest the Athleta Brooklyn pants. I’ve been eyeing them and just got a pair from Poshmark.
Athleta Brooklyn are great for this.
Just about any Athleta pant can be dressed up enough for teaching. Just throw on a nicer shirt and a necklace/scarf/blazer and you’ll be good to go.
My commute is short, but I still wear cycling clothes and change at my destination (or just walk into the store looking like a dork if I’m running errands). If for some reason I can’t change, I’ll wear tri-shorts and pull pants on over them. Comfort > fashion here.
I would change. You’re going to get sweaty and windblown.
Check out prana pants in the Zion fabric (Halle, Briann). Super comfortable and depending on the color can read a bit dressier.
YMMV, but I found that the Halle pants didn’t have enough range of motion for comfortable biking. They were too tight in the knee area. I prefer Kuhl for this purpose, although they’re not super dressy.
For a dressier option, lucky sizes only in these pants, which are PERFECT for biking and then the office: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072Q11JCR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
A reader recommended them here and luckily I got a few sizes before they seemed to be mostly discontinued!
Agreed- I bought the Halle pants for the response portion of my job and they’re meh.
Interesting. I find them super comfortable for hiking. I haven’t tried biking in them. Columbia is my other go to for this type pant, but they run small imo.
This reminds me of Ross Gellar roller-blading to class.
I bike commute 4 miles each way in the midatlantic year round. I love Athleta pants for this, but you can find similar pants at Sierra Trading Post (the outdoors version of TJ Maxx). I don’t know the brand (and you probably couldn’t find them anyways) but I have a few pairs of pants that are made out of athletic material but have the same cut as work pants. They’re thin though, so not super warm.
I also like Old Navy’s elastic waist for pants for the same reason. Enough give for biking, but nice enough looking for work.
If I could afford it, my entire wardrobe would be Athleta but I can’t so the TJ Maxx equivalents are my favorites.
I have a pair of the Vuori Ripstop pants and they might work for you. They don’t wrinkle, they’re stretchy and I’d wear them to teach in a casual setting. The only caveat I’d offer is that they do tend to be warm, so I’d only wear them if the weather is cooler and it’s more of a casual ride, not a workout.
My co-worker’s spouse is Dutch and he insists that Dutch people bike in whatever they would otherwise be wearing and it is always fine. He thinks that we are very extra for having bike-dedicated clothes for mere bike commuting. Sport biking he acknowledges could be different but says you do things differently when everyone has a very tiny closet and most people bike often to get places.
+1. When I lived in Germany, I biked in jeans and cardigans and ballet flats. However, I need more comfort these days!
Do they also have bikes that let you sit upright? I much prefer bicycles where I’m sitting up straight to ones that make me lean over the handlebars. (I don’t know much about cycling as you can tell.)
Beach cruisers!
This is true, but biking to work in the US is also a far more athletic endeavor because we have hills and less biking infrastructure.
Signed, lived in the Netherlands for a year, now in hilly Seattle.
+1 agreed. I’ve lived in Germany, Copenhagen and Sweden and would rather bike commute 10 miles to work there than 1 mile in the US.
Some smartish joggers? Especially if you’re behind a podium. I wore skirts and thick tights on occasion last year, but do find I tend to snag my tights as I rest my pedal on my shin at red lights.
Modern Citizen Brooke Pants – my new go-to pant – would work for this.
Boden has some cotton pants with give that would work for bike commuting. I live in a casual place and haven’t paid attention to wrinkles for ages, though. You might want to consider a leg band so your pants don’t get stuck.
A dress/skirt with leggings or tall boots could also work if it’s not too cold.
I commute by bicycle in whatever clothes I’m wearing that day. My clothes have been more casual during the pandemic, so a lot of skinny jeans, loose cotton trousers and dresses/skirts with tights.
I think my jeans get stretched out at the knees a little faster because of the rides, but not in any meaningful way the same day after one ride to work. I have also got windbreaker and rain pants as an extra outer layer if needed, and cycling overshoes to help with splashes and mad during spring and autumn.
Is this post a joke? $800 for a single sheet?
I aspire to be bougier than I am, but this is absurd.
+1
I love nice linens but I also love to eat in bed. I’m not spending that kind of money on sheets.
Everyone likes to spend their money different ways, but unless these sheets are going to make me soothing tea and sway me to sleep while singing me a gentle lullaby every night, they’re not worth it. Thanks to perimenopause, I imagine I would sleep just as poorly on these sheets as I do on the linen blend sheets I got from Target for $60 on sale. At least the linen keeps me cool when I have a nighttime hot flash.
The best thing I did for my sleep hygiene, BTW, was buy and install blackout shades for the skylight and window in my bedroom. Cost $350 for both shades and we installed them ourselves; totally worth it. I also got a good humidifier that I run overnight and now I don’t wake up congested and headachy, which makes the day better even if I don’t sleep very well.
Yeah, I just can’t really imagine that there is enough of a difference between these sheets and a pair that costs. say, $150 to justify the increase.
Yeah I’ve found a huge difference between sheets in the >$100 range vs those <$50, but at some point there have to be diminishing returns.
April fools came early
Aspirational me always wanted bougie sheets. Real me is married to a man with painful psoriasis plaques that break open and leave bloodstains everywhere.
Why doesn’t he have his own bed and sheets? You have posted about this several times and it really seems to bother you, which is totally understandable. You don’t have to put up with it.
No, I haven’t. Weird comment.
So there are two commenters whose husbands ruin their sheets with psoriasis?
Yeah I’ve definitely seen this exact complaint about her husband before. I pass out at the sight of blood so the thought of waking up to a crime scene every morning really stuck with me after the first time she brought it up.
I’ve slept on sheets that were already generations old by the time they made it to me. They were definitely at least 10x better than regular nice sheets.
I will mentally file away bedsheets as something to get from estate sales then.
At first I thought it was $800 for the set, and I thought “well that’s not for me but I guess I could see it.” Then I realized it was just for the fitted. Omg.
What sort of “toppers” are current?
I work in different buildings and project sites and need layers. I default to cardigans but that gets boring fast. I know blazers are always good but a) I have wide shoulders and b) they are very “dressy” for my department. Are moto jackets dated? What about a knit bomber jacket?
it’s almost aggressively casual, but I often wear a longer button front shirt, unbuttoned and loose as my “topper.” I am 100% WFH but it presents OK on camera. Most of my colleagues are in hoodies so it doesn’t seem to matter that much.
I thought it might work for you because you said project sites.
I like some arm coverage because I don’t like my arms and I also prefer to have some sun protection.
Are jean jackets too casual? My jean jackets get a ton of wear and I don’t feel dated in them.
I suggested a button front shirt worn open but I’m in m-d, no idea why
Is there a good one that won’t make me look like a rectangle / Minecraft character? I am short and short-waisted and just feel lost. But I see this look everywhere.
I think rectangle is part of the look. The alternative would be a shirt with waist shaping like princess seams or darts but imagining wearing that shirt untucked seems like it wouldn’t look right.
This look only says Chessy to me…
bc of the weird f-tish person who occasionally comes here and posts about that type of garment…
*man. Only a man would do that.
Haha I just tried to respond to the rectangle question and I’m in m-d again! Maybe it’s the word sh-rt.
Knit moto jacket!
I am not a good source on what’s current, but I am drooling over the Athleta moto jacket. Can say with much certainty it will be headed my way next time I get any sort of discount to that store.
I despise the term “topper”, have only ever seen it used here, and think it should be banished from the vocabulary.
I agree.
Haha fair enough! I don’t use it in my daily life but figured people here would know what I meant.
It reminds me of the college town pizza place in my state. Taco Topperstix foreverrrrrr.
Hell, I thought it was a gardening question.
+1
I typically use the term “third piece” or just plain old jacket, but topper doesn’t bother me.
I’m trying to get some specific bookshelves from Ikea to match some I got pre-COVID. I just got a notification from Ikea this morning saying “good news! we have an estimated date when your items will be available in store: November 1st-10th, 2022.” Yes, good news, Ikea, thanks, that’s a lot of help to me in August 2021…..
Back to Craigslist it is.
LOL!
Kat, please remove the name from the earlier reply to this post.
If you were opening a new brokerage account today for basic investing (probably index funds) where would you open the account?
Vanguard.

also been happy with Charles schwab.
We love Fidelity.
Just bought some Lands End percale sheets and washed them. They have a weird texture. Do they get better
