Frugal Friday’s TPS Report: Frond Pencil Skirt

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. Loft Frond Pencil SkirtLoft has a TON of nice prints out right now — I like the pictured palm frond skirt, but there are a bunch of others (this ikat cardigan, this gridstroke blouse, this tropic linen tee, or for the weekend, this floral midi dress, this space dyed pencil skirt, or this zebra stripe tank and maxi . . . ). In other interesting news, if you're trying to build a capsule wardrobe this summer, note that if you search on the color name at Loft, it pulls up many complementary things in the same color, including solids and different prints (for example, try this search on “turquoise bliss“). It's kind of fun to scroll through and look at the different outfits as styled on the models. The pictured skirt is available in petite, tall, and regular sizes 00-16 (as well as curvy regular and petite sizes!). It was $69 but with today's sale it comes down to $41.40. Loft Frond Pencil Skirt Here are two plussize options. If you're looking for a higher end version, check out these two similar palm frond skirts. Seen a great piece you’d like to recommend? 1. I need to become an expert on Stark and Anti-Kickback laws. I’ve done a bit of research on issues that fall under these, but I’d really like to study some grand overview that would help it all fit together and help me understand what to look for and that sort of thing. Preferably, something actually readable (hah!). Any suggestions?

    1. Lyssa, if you Goggle it, you will find a great chart that HHS put’s out expleaining the differences. Here is the link:
      oig.hhs.gov/compliance/…/StarkandAKSChartHandout508.pdf

I think alot of attorney’s just do not use the INTERENET like I do. Once peeople get more familiar with the power of the web, we can all do alot better and men will respect us more, rather than just want to use us to have sex with. I wish you luck in both your research and in your quest for a man who will MARRY you and can take you away from all of this. After all, I do NOT know much about Stark and Anti-Kickback laws, but also I realy do NOT want to know about it. I just want a guy who will MARRY me and suport me in the lifestyle I want, like Ed does in Chapaqua with Rosa and the kid’s, and that Chelsea Clinton gets with that guy Mizvinskiy or whatever. YAY!!!!

    2. 1) Join AHLA and look at their resources. I think that they have some wikis that are member edited. Plus the list-serves are great to discuss hypotheticals. There are also several publications (Representing Physicians Handbook and Legal Issues in Fraud and Abuse) that will help. Reading the Federal Register commentary for the regulations and the OIG Advisory opinions (AKS) will also show you how the govt would likely interpret a scenario

      2) this firm does a nice job http://www.bricker.com/services/resource-details.aspx?resourceid=435 Particularly helpful is the comparison chart btwn the two statutes and the exceptions/safe harbors.

    3. OMG! Thank you! I need this as well. And thanks everyone for all the resources!

        1. On that note, are you in compliance? Is anyone else? I have questions about making the transition…

          1. I am. I’ve worked for both brokerage firms and big banks. Currently at a smaller firm. Love it. Let me know if you’d like to talk.

    1. 1) That’s the oddest place in dc I can think of for a meetup. but 2) how was it organized? Somehow I completely missed hearing about this

      1. Oh, no, it was a great spot! They have a pretty great happy hour deal on their martinis, etc., and the location was nice. We essentially had the little front room bar all to ourselves.

I learned about it in one of the threads, as she was trying to revive the previous group that hadn’t met for some time. She posted about it again in yesterday morning’s thread (top TJ, actually), including where to email her. I don’t feel comfortable just reposting her email here, but since she did yesterday, you can def email her and get on the list for the future events!

        1. You had the front bar to yourselfs because no one but the russian mob goes there haha. Out of all the places in dc that wouldn’t crack the top 100. Its not that its bad its just the weirdest spot I can think of for a meetup. But I am glad it worked out- I’ll keep an eye out for future events

          1. I don’t know, it’s got a bunch of great reviews on Yelp… Doesn’t sound like only the Russian mob goes there.

          2. It’s not necessarily that only the Russian mob goes that, it’s that the Russian mob DOES go there.

Sorry I missed it, couldn’t get out of last-minute plans.

          3. It was serviceable (and seemingly devoid of Bond villians…this time)– I’m sorry you missed it! I want to meet Baconpancakes (/eat some).
Anonymous, next time, we’ll wait in line at Rose’s Luxury or Little Serow ;-)

          4. haha true Bacon pancakes is more correct. I am sure the group was not let upstairs:) But again, I am glad it was a good time- that is what matters!

          5. haha yes there are the hockey player(s) too. And bacon pancakes has it right- its not ALL of them but I’m sure the group was not let upstairs :) But hey, at least its not lebonese taverna :) I kid I kid, just good natured teasing. I am glad everyone had a good time- it sounds like it would be fun to meet people!

      2. I posted 2-3 times prior to this regarding past meetups and then organized the event when I realized nothing had happened in quite some time.

If you are interested and/or have suggestions as to new locations, email me at asideralis@gmail.com

    2. It was nice to meet you all, too! I’m glad you had fun. :D

For all other DC area hive members, please feel free to email me at asideralis@gmail.com for future meetings.

I honestly had no idea regarding the Russian mob, and just moved to the area from LA. I am open to suggestions for future locations!

  2. Yay! Fruegel Friday’s! I love Fruegel Friday’s and this Pencil Skirt, Kat! It is so springey! Great Pick, Kat! YAY!!!!!

I read in today’s NY Times that the Doctor that was treated for Ebola in Atlanta STILL has Ebola in his eye. FOOEY! Mabye Dad was right after all about Noah. They say that Ebola can stay for MONTHS in your eye or in Semen, which mean’s that even if you are decleared EBOLA-FREE, that if you have sex with someone who is a doctor who had Ebola, you can get it through the semen. FOOEY! Now Noah did NOT have Ebola, but Dad was worried that with all kind’s of peeople showing up at his ER that he could, and then he could give it to me, even if we did NOT have sex or exchange semen. I supose that if he did have an active case, that would have been true, but even if he was cured, and we did get sexueal, then the semen could also give me Ebola. I am glad dad was MENSA, b/c I never would have been abel to figure all of that out on my own, particulearly b/c I am so involved in being an attorney at law here in NY, and I want to remain in good standing, at least until AFTER I marry a rich guy and he impregnate’s me with NON-Ebola Sperm. YAY!!!!

Dad want’s me to come out to LI this weekend to discuss the partnership agreement. He think’s that Mabye I should branch out on my own, so that I could get the FULL benefit of all of my case’s. I do NOT have any suport structure for doeing this — no associate’s, no secretary, or office. I think Dad wan’ts me to set up MY OWN Practise, which would mean getting my own office and secretary and wireless rooter. He also said that I could do all of it out of my own apartement, particulearly if I get the 3 bedroom uptown. I have alot to think about.

What does the HIVE think? Should I go it alone? I would need an associate, but would NOT take Mason, because he is a doosh, and Lynn would have to come with him, and I do NOT want to have to pay for those 2 haveing sex on the conference room tabel, like they did in the old place. FOOEY on that. Myrna has agreed to drive me out and stay over for the weekend b/c she is thinkeing that mabye she would buy my apartement if I move to the 3 bedroom. I am NOT realy interested in moving b/c I have my apartement set up just the way I like it and everything actualy work’s! I have my own home office and wireless rooter already, and I do NOT want any cleint’s comeing into my new apartement, even tho there is 2 1/2 bath’s and they would only be using the toilet to go to the bathroom, not shower, so that might work, but still. I think I have to be abel to seperate my work from my personal life. Otherwise I will NEVER find a rich guy to MARRY me and take me to Chapaqua. FOOEY!

What does the HIVE think? I useueally read alot of good advise from the HIVE, and I try to give good advise. Now I hope the HIVE has some advise for me. BTW, I may go back home early b/c it is so nice out and I need to slim my tuchus down b/f dad sees me. HELP!

  3. Yesterday I got some feedback (criticism) from my supervisor, which I responded to (I hope) in the approved, professional way. Now, the logical part of my brain is saying “ok, that’s valid you can use that/improve that.” BUT the emotional side of my brain is ping-ponging between “everybody hates me, I’m terrible” and “how dare he say that doesn’t he know how hard I have it, blah blah blah” I was tossing and turning all night and now I’m exhausted and my stomach hurts, I can’t concentrate. UGH.

Why am I such a big baby all the time???

    1. Why have you artificially labeled totally normal feelings lots of adults have as being a baby?

    2. I give my emotional self a while to have all of the feels about it, a time in which I do not take action, and then I come back later and implement professionally appropriate changes to improve. That system works well for me.

  4. I love this skirt – cute with a camel or ivory tee tucked in…

Quick TJ – we’re spending the day on a friend’s boat at a nearby lake tomorrow – about 6 adults and I volunteered to bring some food. We’ll be there around brunch/lunch time and we’re all vegetarians. My DH loves paninis (go figure) and wants to make those…

I’m stumped for ideas. I thought a nice orzo feta salad and tropical fruit selection would be nice; any other ideas that would be ok for a boat (i.e., not too messy)?

    TIA!!

    1. What about caprese skewers? Buffalo mozzarella, basil and tomato but super easy to make. Just put one of each on a toothpick.

    2. fritatta cut into wedges. Or made in a muffin tin so that you have individual fritattas

frittata, caprese, fruit salad and bread and cheese is my go-to picnic menu

    3. White bean and garlic scape dip with pita wedges. Zucchini and guacamole with radish and queso fresco mini tacos, pre-made and held together with a toothpick. Fallafel. Street corn, premade and individually wrapped in tin foil. Lightly steamed asparagus spears with Parmesan.

  5. Shopping question. I love(d) the Jcrew Factory Winnie pants, which I believe were very similar to the Jcrew Minnie pants, in wool. I don’t like the stretchy twill version. Anyone have experience with a similar pair of wool ankle pants? I need a few more. It looks like Jcrew made some similar pants, the Martie and the Paley, but I haven’t tried them. I’m open to other brands as well. I am petite and pretty narrow but with a slightly pair shape. Thanks!

    1. LE has some that are washable and you can get hemmed in various lengths. The ones I have aren’t wool, but work for the office (business end of business casual). I dont like mine tight and order up. “Fit 2” works for me (slightly big in the waist; less so than the BR ones below, but not enough to spring for tailoring).

BR also has a stretchy pant (the name escapes me). Those are dry clean only, but similar to the LE ones.

I am also a skinny pear.

    2. I buy mine from marks and spencer, they have tons of ankle pants and they suit my pear shape.

    3. Yes! I recently bought and love the Loft “skinny pants” in petite. 98% wool. Always part of a promo. They stretch a bit so size down if you’re unsure.

  6. Would appreciate some advice….

What do I wear at an evening Country Club (6pm start) birthday party for an older relative? They live in the Bay Area. They are much more wealthy than I, but are very casual people… as many are in that area.

I am from the Midwest. I have never been to a Country Club. Money is tight for me so the trip alone is all I can afford. Hoping I can shop my closet….

    1. Do you have a spring dress? I’d wear that with nice shoes. Don’t be intimidated. If you have something in a pastel floral with a cardigan, I’d wear that.

      1. Alas, no florals in my wardrobe! I think they don’t quite match my personality….

    2. I think you’re over-worrying this. People are going to be happy you were able to come, not concerned about your clothes. Country club = not too tight, not too short, no denim (chambray shirts are usually okay)

Unless it’s clear from the invitation that this is a fancy event, I recommend you aim for leather low heeled or flat sandals and a dress or skirt (preferably in a natural fiber) that isn’t too short on you. Actually, the Loft skirt posted above would be fine with a slightly more polished version of that white top.

    3. I can’t speak to the Bay Area, but at the country/yacht clubs in San Diego and Boston, a pretty skirt and a nice top would be fine. Think the female equivalent of khakis and a (nice) polo.

      1. Thanks for your thoughts. I’m relieved that you aren’t saying I need a cocktail dress! I just wasn’t sure since it will go into the evening.

I don’t really own spring/floral/print dresses….. Because of my coloring, I don’t own many light colors/pastels. I basically have some sheath dresses in solid colors.

I have a navy blue sheath with a slight A line (I’m pear shaped) that is made of a linen blend. It has a little detail along the side…. Could I wear that with nude patent pumps (don’t really have summer dressy sandals…) and maybe an interesting necklace that has more color/contrast?

Sorry I’m so pathetic…. Although my relatives are “casual”, they are a bit judge-y…

        1. The navy sheath with nude patent pumps sounds great. Maybe pair with a chunky coral necklace (I am obsessed with navy-orange or navy-coral combos these days). Be sure to bring some sort of a wrap – a cardigan, a light jacket, a big scarf will all do.

          1. Thanks for this. I have some interesting stone necklaces in great colors that I never wear. Long necklace…. right? I am very flat chested.

The dress is sleeveless, and I’m always cold. I’m glad you say a scarf will do, as I have many more of those than appropriate light jackets, or even appropriate cardigans…

            Thanks so much you guys.

        2. I’ve spent a lot of time at Bay Area/peninsula country clubs and this sounds perfect. To echo other advice here, the biggest rule is no denim and men need to wear jackets. Otherwise, stick to classic looks – sheath dresses and nude pumps are perfect. It’s the Bay Area so no hose needed. Pay attention to your jewelry – opt for real (or real looking – e.g. Cubic zirconia studs) jewelry over costume.

        3. I can’t believe it took me this long to think of this… but why not call up the country club and ask if they have a jacket/tie requirement for men or any other dress code? If it’s jacket/tie for men, then it’s probably time for a cocktail dress (borrowed from a friend, maybe?). Otherwise, you’re good on that cute outfit.

    4. The Bay Area is so casual. Where exactly is the country club? My advice might be slightly different depending on whether you’re talking Peninsula, Far East Bay, or Marin. But in general, I think you’d be fine in a spring dress, cardigan, and heels. You could also wear a tunic and narrow ankle-length pants. Don’t wear jeans, don’t wear anything too flashy (no sequins, no glitz). Amid Privilege is a great blog that is this exact demographic, so you might see what she posts, or even reach out to her directly to see what she advises.

      1. Portola Valley/Atherton

Thanks for the ideas. Will check out theblog!

  7. I am planning a trip to DC with some girlfriends the last weekend in May. Do any DC ladies have suggestions for laid back dinner, drinks, or brunch? We are staying near Dupont circle. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

    1. Boqueria in DC is a great brunch. Circa in dupont has good food and lately has not been as crowded- its not amazingly special but if its tasty.

    2. Dinner – Le Mirch (French/Indian fusion in North Dupont) – kind of a lounge-y interior but very reasonable and delicious

Brunch – Busboys & Poets, or for very laid back (order at the counter style), Point Chaud has amazing crepes

Drinks – If you want to stay in the Dupont area, I think the bar Board Room is your best bet. I also really like Bar Charley, but it’s a little scene-y – go on the early side if you don’t want it to be packed. But I recommend getting out of the Dupont neighborhood too – up in Columbia Heights, the bar Red Derby is awesome (they have an incredible selection of beer in cans only!)

    3. For brunch I love Cava Mezze. There’s a location in Barracks Row. Ted’s Bulletin (14th or Barracks) is awesome for home-style “diner” food (and adult milkshakes!).

      1. Oh yes – I’d also add that if you need a quick lunch, Cava Grill (Cava Mezze’s fast food spin-off) is very good. Chipotle-style Mediterranean food with an awesome selection of juices and teas.

          1. Merzi? I used to live around the corner. Didn’t like it, to be honest – I thought it lacked flavor and the add-ons weren’t very Indian-inspired.

          2. You’re not thinking of Shop House, are you? It’s more Southeast Asian than Indian, but owned by Chipotle and also delicious. Not very widespread yet, not nearly as much as Chipotle, though I hope it someday will be.

Now I might have to go get Cava Grill for lunch… yum.

          3. Yes, Shop House is wonderful!

(And as I continue to type, I realize I have been to pretty much every DC-based fast food chain ever…I cook sometimes, I swear!….)

    4. Kramerbooks and Afterwords is a great bookstore-slash-cafe. Hubs and I enjoyed dessert there (before buying and lugging 6 books around the monuments at night. It was not our brightest moment.)

    5. Iron Gate is in Dupont and is lovely – small plates for dinner or brunch, amazing drinks. You want the patio, not the tasting room, and reservations are recommended.

      1. Oh, Iron Gate is fantastic. Look at the pictures on the website and you will get a feel for how great the ambiance is.

Estadio also has a nice brunch. Their G&Ts (with different housemade tonics) are my favorite drinks in town.

      1. I like Teaism for brunch/lunch, pretty sure there’s one near Dupont. And contrary to the ladies above, ShopHouse ranks among the worst food I’ve ever eaten. It’s not worth it for the price, as they charge you extra if you want more veggies and it doesn’t taste good as Chipotle.

    1. Yes, I think they are TTS. Be aware their dresses are high-waisted and tend to fit apples better than pears. I love how they look in the catalogue, but can’t wear them.

    2. I’d say true to size but they fit differently than many other stores. Mostly narrower through the hips, sometimes more room in the bust, sometimes not. So, if you’re a pear and are ordering a dress with a pencil-type skirt, you might need to go up one size from your usual size. If it’s an A-line skirt or you have any other body type, I’d guess you should stick with your usual size.

Also many of the dresses have an unusually high waistline: higher than usual, but not so high that it looks like it’s supposed to be an empire waist. This is often difficult to see in catalog/online photos, but you can sometimes tell. Sometimes this can create an unflattering pooch of fabric over the stomach, even when the dress fits everywhere else.

Basically, as a long-waisted pear shape, I seem like the last person Boden is designing for, but I keep trying! And the dresses that do work for me are great quality and very attractive.

    3. In my experience, the sizes run large in the larger sizes. I tend to wear a size 12 in most brands. The Boden 12 is enormous on me. I also agree with PP that the dresses don’t work for long-waisted folks.

    4. They have all the full measurements of the garments themselves online, so grab a tape measure and one of your existing dresses. I love that they do this.

  8. Anyone particularly familiar with Ithaca, NY? I have a free day and a half there. I’d also appreciate any reasonably-priced hotel recs that would be convenient (is walking distance possible?) to Cornell.

    1. Love Ithaca. We normally stay with friends or do airbnb so unfortunately no help on the hotel front (although I would check out airbnb). If you are there on a weekend, the farmer’s market is great. The Dairy Bar on campus has great ice cream. If you have a car and want to explore, Watkins Glen is a great, easy walk/hike. There are som fun wineries on the finger lakes. Stone Cat cafe in Hector (across from Red Newt) is a great place for a meal. If you’re into yoga, Mighty Yoga in Ithaca is great for a drop in class.
      Enjoy!

      1. +1 to wineries and the Ithaca Farmers Market! The breakfast burritos are my favorite but all of the food is great. Other ideas: Walk around Ithaca Commons (lots of cute/hippie shops, etc.). Collegetown Bagels for breakfast or lunch. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell. If your trip is in summertime and you want to swim under a waterfall, Treman State Park.

For lodging, the only hotel that is really walking distance is the Statler, which is directly on campus but pricy. There is a Best Western at East Hill Plaza near Cornell but that is a bit of a hike to the main part of campus so you would probably want to drive. I have no experience with this so I may be wrong, but if your trip is after spring semester is over you might have luck on airbnb with houses in Collegetown (area next to campus where many students live) that are empty for the summer.

As a Cornell alum I’m jealous and wish I could come with you! Ithaca is beautiful in spring/summer.

    2. Just a Taste is great for dinner. Ithaca Beer Co has a taproom next. Collegetown Bagels in Collegetown has a great patio to hang out and people watch at and is right outside Cornell. Love the Farmer’s Market. Wineries and hiking. Taughannock Falls. Not sure what hikes are open now with all the changes to the gorges. I believe there’s also a Hilton Garden Inn in the Commons but that’s a 20 min uphill walk to Cornell. Have fun!

  9. Hi hive: I have just moved up a bucket in shoe quality, and now I am so much more concerned about scuffing up my shoes. Specifically, I often scuff the toe of my pointed toe flats. Is there a product I can buy or something I can ask my cobbler to do so they don’t get scuffed as easily (other than learn to walk better, ha!)? Thanks!

    1. I bought a pair of fancy western boots and put metal toe cap things on them (based on pair #1 verging on becoming open-toe boots before open-toe boots was a thing). 14 years later, I am still wearing them.

I have found nothing that works on dress shoes. Frequent polishes help cover scuffs. Some patent leather holds up well (or takes a black sharpie and vaseline well).

I just have empathy (and my shoe bucket level is not high for this reason). I also avoid really skinny heels b/c I ruined a covered skinny heel on a space b/w bricks on my first wearing.

    2. I’ve had the same problem and have had good luck with the cobbler putting on a 1/2 sole (synthetic) and they sorta extend the sole a bit past the tip – not so much that it would be noticeable but enough to protect the tip.

  10. I need to wear a formal dress to an event this summer. I have the dress, but will need to get it tailored. I know that to tailor it I will need to wear the appropriate foundation undergarments, but I don’t know what to get. Basically I want to know what shapewear will be best for my body and the dress. Do I just take the un-tailored dress to the department store and try it on with every shapewear? Is there a personal shopper who can help me figure this out? I am in DC. THANK YOU.

    1. Yes, I would take it in and try on a variety of underpinnings. I’d start with wherever is known in your area for having a knowledgeable staff for lingerie (specialty stores, high end department stores).

      1. Anyone have suggestions of what stores to go to? I usually go to Bloomingdale Friendship Heights for lingerie but it’s not always staffed knowledgeably.

        1. Sylene in Friendship Heights–just around the corner (on North Park, I think?) from Brooks Brothers.
How is the selection/size range at Bloomingdales, btw?

ETA: Not anonymous, but Kelly Andthenblog. Had to switch to another browser because Cr3tt3 was not loading at all.

    2. I feel like Nordstrom (…close enough to DC, right?) would be helpful, or Sylene in FH (if it’s specifically upper-half shapewear). FWIW, I’ve definitely done this for bras with dresses I own.

    3. I often bring the dress with me to try things on! I typically can narrow it down quite a bit based on the style of dress. Feel like sharing what it is?

    4. My advice is to wear whatever lower-half-of-body shapewear is most comfortable for you. On the top, try on a bunch of bras and see what works best with the lines of the dress. But comfort is essential here – no shapewear will work unless you actually can stand to wear it.

    5. Definitely Nordstroms. If you are carless, Tysons, if you have car several options.
If you want to try on your own, they have free shipping and a much wider selection online than in any stores. (Especially if you are not a super standard size.) A happy medium would be to order online, and then bring your top picks to the store to have them help evaluate.

    6. When I was getting fitted for a bridesmaid’s dress, the seamstress working on my told me to be sure to wear the bra I was going to wear as that could pretty dramatically affect the fit (especially since it was strapless and needed to stay up) but that it wasn’t critical I be fitted with the spanx I was planning to wear as that would just slim me down a little bit and make the dress skim over my curves a little better.

Unless your dress is super body-con, or unless you are planning to get a slip and want to make sure it doesn’t show if the dress is shortened, I wouldn’t worry so much about needing the bottom half undergarments as immediately as the top half.

  11. Oddly, I had an A-line skirt from Loft about 10 years ago in this exact print. LOVED it… and I’m normally not a palm frond kinda girl. It was way more versatile than you’d think.

    1. Did you wear it to your office? To me, it looks like a casual, hanging-out-with-friends kind of thing, cute, but not professional. I’m surprised Kat featured it. What do you wear to the office otherwise?

  12. I had a first-round interview for a job on Monday. On Tuesday, I was contacted by one of the people who interviewed and said that they would like to call me back to meet other higher-ups next week, and that they would be in touch. It’s now Friday at noon and I still haven’t heard anything regarding scheduling for next week. Should I follow up?

  13. Kat, for the first time I’ve been on this blog in years, there are two autoplay ads on the sides that I can’t seem to turn off or mute. They just keep replaying and refreshing. And one of them is for lube. I can’t visit this blog at work anymore if this is the new deal.

      1. I’m not seeing them — Will someone please do me a huge favor and click one to grab the URL for me? Where do they lead? Also, which spot on the page (the one at the bottom of the sidebar)? Apparently companies “hide” autoplay ads like that so filters can’t catch them. #classy

        1. right side, two bottom ads. I just clicked but the ads keep switching to different companies so I’m not sure if I can provide much help.
