These boots look perfect if you're on the hunt for new ones. I love the low heels but the sleek toe — perfect for the newer pant shapes we're seeing this season.
As always, I believe the hem should be about half an inch above the floor in the back, brushing the top of the shoe in the front.
The boots are $198 at Madewell, Nordstrom, and Zappos. Madewell has, by far, the most color options, including the pictured “true black,” (in calf leather and suede, as well as “true black multi,” which seems like a lot of look). They also have Turkish Coffee (calf and suede), Deep Merlot, and Tawny Khaki.
Looking for something more affordable? These boots from J.Crew Factory are down to $75 today. (J.Crew's Stevie boot is also pretty similar, with even more color options if that's your thing — if commenter Godzilla is still reading, do check these out.)

I had really similar boots circa 2007, and they were surprisingly uncomfortable! Can’t believe that was nearly 20 years ago.
Anonymous
I hate kitten heels. They are so uncomfortable.
anon
Oh god, me too. What goes around really does come back around, huh? I can’t bring myself to buy something like this, despite the “trendiness”, because of my wearing these out with “jeans and a going out top” in 2007.
anon
I tried kitten heels for a hot minute, too. I like the look, but I turned my ankle several times wearing that style of heel! Something about it is less stable than it seems.
20 years later, and I’m not wearing heels at all, so.
Just Engaged
I just got engaged this past weekend and am looking for wedding planning resources! We are looking at fall 2025 (likely domestic but potentialllyyy europe destination). Any recommendations for planning resources or platforms?
Thank you!!
Anon
Reddit has some amazing forums! Depending on your budget, r/BigBudgetBrides, r/weddingsunder10k, or r/weddingplanning are all great options.
Anon
No advice (I got married ages ago) but congrats!!
Anonymous
I was obsessed with WeddingBee when I was planning mine, but that was back when Bee still ran it.
Anon
Congrats! Once you decide on a location or region for the wedding, I highly recommend looking for and joining a Facebook wedding planning group specific to the region. My local group was an amazing resource for info about local venues and vendors.
Cat
congrats! It has been a long time since I was planning, but a few things that helped me in general:
1. You don’t have to have any wedding element just because it’s common. For me that meant no unity candle or sand sculpture, garter or bouquet toss, cake, or favors. (Guests could take home mini-desserts with provided boxes).
2. Your choice of venue will help set the vibe for the whole event, your dress, etc (is it going to be vintage-slinky? grand ballroom? Anthro garden? Minimalist art gallery chic? Polished and preppy?) and is the most important to reserve early, so tackle that first – that in turn is driven by budget and guest list.
3. There are only a handful of people that will ever know if something wasn’t “right” on the day for almost any problem. Like some of our flowers weren’t put where they had been designed to go… but did it matter? No.
All that said, think really hard about whether you want a Big Wedding before diving in. I absolutely loved our big day and celebrating with extended family and multiple friend groups… but if I were getting married now I would 100% do a tiny destination wedding with parents, siblings, and best friend.
Not a problem
Adding on: I once went to a wedding where the caterer had the wrong date listed and there was no food. No one told the couple, and family members raided local grocery stores and prepped a delicious meal at the reception site. The couple barely even noticed that the entrees were different.
Anon
Oh wow, amazing work by the family members!
Anon
Congrats!!
I have been married for decades and ours was a small event but hope this unsolicited advice is helpful. Decide your budget first. Then as you make plans, adhere to that budget. You will be just as married regardless of how much you spend.
Anon
Pinterest. Pin everything you like until you start seeing patterns in your pins – you’ll notice you like coral bouquets, etc. congrats!
smurf
congrats! I got married this year, so recent advice :)
reddit is great for general planning/process stuff – figuring out timing, things to think about with selecting a venue, navigating emotions of who can/can’t come, etc.
facebook – shockingly – the *local* wedding groups are amazing for finding vendors, actual vendor reviews, and more budget friendly options if that matters to you. Sites like The Knot rarely have negative or neutral reviews. The non-regional groups I joined were generally only good if you like reading about other people’s drama.
pinterest (though so many ads & AI now!) & instagram were helpful for theme/colors inspo, flowers, decor ideas, etc.
A Practical Wedding – the site is a bit..much at times now, but they have a good guide for thinking through what your actual priorities are, sounds like it’d help you in determining destination, size, etc.
personally we relied on google sheets/docs for planning, tracking, etc. and that worked great for us
OP
Congrats to you guys! Thank you for this list! Did you use TheKnot as your wedding website platform as well? Trying to figure that out as well.

Following up as the poster from yesterday who has noticed a huge surge in men on dating apps who identify as conservative. I’ve also noticed an uptick of men flipping off the camera in their photos! Like come on, how old are we? My settings are set to ages 28-45.
anon
there is no question that there is a gender political divide. I’m very left and my teenage boys are way right of me. I thought it was just us but i hear that from a lot of people.
Anonymous
This would crush my soul
Cb
This tracks what I’m seeing from young men in the university classroom. Lots of men’s rights chat that feels really worrisome.
Anon.
I posted above. My son is fairly moderate but has an outdoors sports person and engineer, he is targeted with very conservative information. I think growing up in a politically mixed household helped him think critically.
Anon
Surveyors have noticed this. Check out the links to surveys inside this article.

Anonymous
If you care to discuss can you explain further? Meaning are your teen boys further right on every issue or just certain issues? Can you tell why? Do they feel like it’s harder for boys to get ahead now because girls are getting ahead? Or is it some resentment of the girls are equal type and can be anything they want type of messaging that happens in school or society?
Anon.
I am very iberal and DH is third party Libertarian. Our adult son’s values are moderate and he will vote Dem but registered NPA. Interestly, both DH and I are very active politically but our son has no real interest. Of course, he has the privilege to not have much interest!
Anonymous
YES — I’ve commented this before also. My son (13) is far right of me and he blindsides me at 11:30 at night with these discussions like “why is it offensive to say ‘all lives matter'” and “if the goal is equality why do women get special stuff and men get discriminated against?” I always feel like I need a power point slideshow to rebut his talking points with factoids and charts.
I thought it was because we live in a red city and a red state (and in part in pushback to my politics (Warren Dem) but my brother just sent me this about how the right wing messages permeate every hobby men, particularly in spaces where 20-30 year olds hang out. https://x.com/Papa_Roman/status/1845626704422646213
Anonymous
Lots of empathy with that. My 13 year old daughter also asks the hard questions at bedtime – like ‘what the deal with abortion?’. I’ve found that saying it is a complex and important issue and then committing to talking more about it the next day helps. There are lots of good resources for how to talk to kids about these tough issues.
Kids today grow up in a different world. They are inundated with info. Sitting down and talking through issues can help them become more critical thinkers. My 9 year old was shocked to learn that gay marriage used to be illegal and grandma couldn’t have her own credit card she married grandpa.
anon
Why the flipping off the camera do you think? Who do they think they’re attracting with a photo of that??
Cora
I read an article once about how some
men pick profile pics based on what would impress them / other men – and dont rralize that its not whats impressive to women
Runcible Spoon
That tracks, and it also is a helpful tool to weed out those very men who are impressed with themselves and/or think more of what other men think of them than show any interest whatsoever in what a prospective romantic date would think. Weirdos.
Anon
The discouraging part is that they are ALL very impressed with themselves.
Anon
That explains why every man needs a dog or a truck or a dead fish in his profile photo.
Anonymous
Lol. Or a bicycle.
Anonymous
I mean, there’s a reason they can’t get dates in real life and have to resort to the apps…
anon
people! this is a really bad attitude. yes there are lots of losers on dating sites but there are also plenty of real people (some who you will like and some you will not). this attitude isn’t helping.
Anon
That is a little rude to all the readers on here using the apps.
Anecdata
hey, that’s unkind – dating’s a mess and a lot of people use the apps in thoughtful and mature ways. Struggling to meet a partner in “real life” doesn’t mean you’re a bad partner!
(not the guys flipping off their profile pics though!)
Anon
I guess there’s a reason why I can’t get dates in real life either then.
NaoNao
It’s one of the few pics of themselves they have and/or they’re still in a juvenile mode thinking it’s cute/funny. To be scrupulously fair, a lot of a certain type of IG hottie/baddie women do this too almost like a…dance move? of some kind, like throwing a peace sign or a “heart” sign in videos and pics, it seems to be perceived as “playfully sexy/sassy” (bleh) and for some people it doesn’t seem to have the striking offensiveness that it does to others, it’s a playful gesture. But to me it’s a huge glaring red flag, I would never even match with a man who used this picture. It’s anti-social!
JTM
I need to inject some new pieces into my wardrobe – are subscription boxes the way to go, or should I look at rental services, or something else? Are there any recommended subscription boxes or rental companies for plus size? Years ago I was a member of Gwynnie Bee but I took a look at their site and it’s full of yucky florals.
anon
i used to like them but kind of over them now…. what i do is spend a few hours scrolling instagram and then look at nordstrom (free shipping and returns) and buy some stuff that approximates what i liked on instagram.
JTM
This is a genius idea…
Anon
I used Nuuly for this. They had a deal on the first three months and then I paused it after four months. There were usually 1-2 pieces from each shipment I wanted to keep. I will probably try it again when spring/summer comes around.
This was partly because I have been losing weight and was reluctant to buy things like pants that do not survive weight fluctuations. But it was also a good way to find things I really liked (I kept buying things that seemed fine in the store or the first wear and then had weird wrinkles or had other issues.)
Anon
I posted recently asking about the Quince Triple Compartment work tote. I bought it, so I’d like to update you all/review it for you! Overall, I’d say I’m very pleased with it for the price. I got the black and the leather is very nice. The hardware is almost a cross between silver and gold (whereas it looks very gold online). It is smaller than I expected – it does fit my 13” laptop and my full size padfolio in the center pocket, but the padfolio does not fit in either of the outside pockets. The outside pockets aren’t as deep/wide as I’d like either, but this may be a good thing as it will limit the amount of junk I’m hauling around. I really like the length of the straps. I’m a bigger woman and they fit very well (I think they will fit well with a coat on too). I like that the center pocket zips closed. Overall, it looks very professional and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that it stands up on its own and doesn’t flop over. I’ll probably get it in taupe eventually too.

Anyone else here passionate about high quality notebooks? :)
I’m looking for a spiral bound large-ish (at least letter but bigger would be even better) notebooks with high quality paper and blank pages. I’m a big fan of the Appointed brand of notebooks but can’t find a large, blank page version there. Small dot grid would be OK too. Anyone have any favorites?
Also if you have any amazing pens to recommend, let me know!
asd
That sounds like a job for LEUCHTTURM1917?

Love mine. I have been buying one per year for 10+ years now. It’s my daily planner.

These look lovely and definitely have the quality aspect (and the option for blank pages), but I can’t see any spiral bound ones on their site.

Have you looked at the Levenger Circa system? It only goes up to letter size, but their notebooks come with all sorts of refill options that include blank pages and small dot grids.

I’m a Cicra fan. Love the paper.

Have you looked at sketchbooks or art notebooks? We’ve bought a few of those over the years — the paper is amazing. This may be too basic for you but I think it’s the one we got at Target in August

I’m a writer, and true to form I’m very particular about my notebooks and pens. I’d start by looking on JetPens https://www.jetpens.com/Blank-Notebooks/ct/2619?f=c4175aecfa32fdd3&pn=1
My favorite pens are the Muji gel pens– they write so smoothly and never skip. I’m in an MFA program and I see people using Muji pens more than any other kind.
It’s not what you’re looking for, but just for fun, my favorite notebooks are Delfonics Rollbahn, which are spiralbound grid paper notebooks. They’re pricy but I am totally spoiled by the quality. The Muji five pack ruled notebook set is a close second and only costs $5. Surprisingly good paper quality for the price point!

If you saw a government job (state or local) posted for a period of 10 days, would you just assume that they have someone in mind already and are required to post? Would you bother applying?
Anonymous
In my shop when we post jobs for only 10 days it’s because the requirements aren’t super specific and we want to avoid having to wade through a thousand applications
Anon
I wouldn’t assume anything (you know what they say..) and would apply if it’s a good fit.

I would assume that and wouldn’t apply

If I thought I might want the job, I would apply. Not applying isn’t going to get me an interview, after all.

The answer to the question you don’t ask is always “no.” You don’t know what is happening, so why not go for it? The worst that can happen is that you don’t get it.
Anonymous
I wouldn’t assume. Especially in a legal role, we might need someone to start asap because we had an unexpected sick leave and we’re already short staffed or something and court dates have been set.
Anonymous
Adding that it can also be because they need to fill the position in a certain fiscal year.
Anon
It could also be trying to get the job filled quickly because folks fear that a hiring freeze is in the cards.

Fall is budget season. If you had a vacant position you need to fill it asap or it’s going to get cut.

Reposting again from yesterday to get more input:
What is your favorite wool coat for $300-ish or less? I live in Chicago, so looking for something that will work for at least part of the winter and be professional looking. I have my puffy coats for the bitter cold. Should I wait until Nov or later in the winter for sales? Thanks in advance!
Anon
J Crew.
Anonymous
If you are a small size don’t wait too long for a sale. They will sell out.
Anon
that budget is a little tight for real wool. But I like Artizia.
Anonymous
For that price I would get something high end at a consignment shop like max mara or akris. If you want new you’re going to get some sort of an icky blend.
Anon
What should I be looking for regarding the material? 100% wool?
Anon
Some nylon or polyamide in the blend helps wool wear better. I like between 10%-30% for better longevity without the fabric feeling like plastic.

I’m looking for new luggage for my 13-year-old. Ideal: large carry-on size; wheeled; not too expensive but something that will last a while. (Yes, I do understand that you get what you pay for; still, I’m hoping for a good cost-to-benefit ratio.) No duffels.
I appreciate any recommendations — thank you!
Anonymous
I just bought my 8 yo an Amazon Basics hard-sided roll-aboard and I am v. happy with it. It’s as good as, if not better than, my Away bag.
Anon
In my experience luggage is not really a “get what you pay” for thing – expensive luggage doesn’t seem to hold up any better than cheap luggage. We have $50 Target carry-one that lasted longer than Away brand ones.
Nina
Okay. I have friends who are obsessed with Away vs. Quince vs something else, and I do travel a lot for work, but I am tempted to just buy the Quince suitcase that has good reviews.
Cat
TravelPro. There’s always a sale and my soft sided checked bag is going on 4 years of heavy use with zero trouble.
Anonymous
+1 to TravelPro. I bought one after noticing that all the flight crews had them and it’s held up very well.
Runcible Spoon
Consider the TravelPro FlightCrew line — it is not available at regular stores, but can be ordered online from retail stores that cater to actual pilots and flight crews. They are a bit more heavy-duty than commercial TravelPro luggage, e.g., stronger zippers, wider crash plates, thicker edge/corner protection, but quite affordable and competitively priced. This is my luggage of choice, and I have not been disappointed.
Anon
We have three hardsided Swissgear 19″ spinners that have held up well for the past 7 years. We mostly car travel but have done some airport trips and have no complaints.
Personally, I prefer a backpack style for carry on use, though.
Anon
Costco often has very good luggage.
Anonymous
Thank you all so much! This is all really helpful.
Nesprin
TJ Maxx and Marshals punch above their weight for luggage- I’d go there first. They’ve got slightly oddly colored stuff sometimes, but luggage colors don’t vary much.
smurf
I also feel like luggage isn’t get-what-you-pay-for.. I bought an american tourister roller carry on at tj maxx or marshalls when I was in my early twenties pretty sure it was under $50. I’ve had it for years and still going strong. Thinking about getting a new one soon but largely because I’m sick of the boring gray color!
(It doesn’t get checked super often but does at times)
Pep
I’m partial to TravelPro, but I just wanted to jump in and say that it appears that TJMaxx/Marshall’s has made some kind of a big buy on luggage: the stores I have visited this week have a ton of product available. Maybe it’s an event?
anon
my kid has an amazon basic roller. I agree with the anon above– spending more increasingly doesn’t make much difference.
Anon
I have an Amazon roller bag and it’s held up great.
Carole
I’m trying to decide whether it would be totally ridiculous to ask for a raise.
I’m a director at a nonprofit, and I’ve been there for about 1.5 years now. My salary is towards the higher end for the org, but low for my professional overall (as is to be expected). My org does give COL adjustments, usually 1-2%.
I know nonprofits generally don’t give raises unless you get a promotion, but I’m not really in a position where a promotion is possible. There really is no level between director and . . . c suite. It’s not an inflated title, its just that there aren’t many levels.
My team has grown significantly since I’ve joined, and our scope of work has changed as well. I’ve started and spearheaded some major changes. I think I have a positive impression overall.
We have year end performance evals, but I’m thinking of asking for a raise at my 2 year mark, a little after that. Does that seem presumptuous / unwarranted? I’m also not sure exactly how much to ask for given the well paid for industry but underpaid for profession part.
Anonymous
Ask, but I would be very mindful that many non-profits are not doing well right now. I’d definitely have an eye to whether your org is doing ok financially and how your job impacts that, not just the comparison to others.
Anecdata
It’s really hard to say without a ton of specifics, but the things you mention – growing a team, spearheading change initiatives – seem like things I would expect from someone ramping up in a director level role, not a huge change of scope of work that justifies a raise in a context where they aren’t otherwise given.
How long have the other directors been there? C Suite? 2 years also seems short to me, given the raises only with promotions” context — but maybe not if it’s something where most of the team is getting promoted that often.
That said – I wouldn’t worry too much about coming across as presumptuous just for asking! You might not get it, but only an unreasonable leader is going to react to “I’m really enjoying the XYZ work, but I’m concerned about comoensation, would like to get to $, is that possible here blah blah blah”. Especially since COL of 1-2% over the last few years is an effective pay cut.
Carole
The “raises only with promotion” is more for like sales associates who at one point were gettng raises every year – which the org wanted to move away from. Honestly I think the org in general is confused about when something is a raise vs. “adjusting to the market since XYZ department was underpaid when we were a broke startup” and what to call it. I’ve been able to argue for the people on my team to get raises and promotions as appropriate, or have planned with HR for them to happen early next year – which is what made me think of my own raise.
It’s also weird because other departments dont have someone exactly like me but for the closest one has been there shorter me and the other 4+ years. The “is that possible here” conversation seems worth it – good to know if the answer is “no we were never planning on giving you a raise since you can’t get promoted”
Anon
Hello, fellow Carole with an e! 👋
Anonymous
Comparison point. I worked for a 200-person or so NFP for about 15 years. There were only a handful of directors and probably less than 5 VPs. All VPs and a couple of directors reported to the COO. Almost everyone received a yearly raise between 1-3 percent. Higher was possible if you gained reports or had a title change (title changes were treated like promotions even if your duties didn’t change all that much). One of the reasons I left was even though I changed titles every 3-4 years, I knew there would be no growth and I wasn’t gaining skills I needed since training was nonexistant. The flip side is that there was a lot of stability compared to other settings (I was an editor, and consumer, and B2B magazines were folding left and right). Ask whatever peers you can about what is and isn’t normal. I would assume that the change in reports would make you eligible for something better. And I also wouldn’t assume that there wouldn’t be any raise year after year. That just seems like a recipe to leave and have constant churn.
Carole II
This is very helpful, thank you! It sounds like a similar org. For those title changes, did you get significant raises?
I woukd think so about the churn too. Thats why I think theres a chance of a raise at some point

Emily Ley has a daily or weekly planner that sounds similar to what you’re looking for. I have also used the Living in Yellow planner a few years & like it too.

I used a Papier hardback weekly planner this year and just reordered earlier this week for 2025. I’ve used Moleskine in the past, and like the week with lined paper on th facing page, but sometimes I need to carry things over and found the monthly goal planning in the Papier version helpful for this.
I also really like Mark’s Inc planners’ slider pocket on the cover– so handy for a pen, and wrangling notes or small items– but I mostly use my planner for home life organizing (my hourly breakdown during the work day is governed by outlook), so the hourly view with less space for the weekend was the opposite of the space allocation I needed

I Love love love my At a Glance, move a page 3 month calendar. It’s not pretty or snarky, but you can just move each month up to the top slot so you don’t have to re-write every month. What i lacks in aesthetics it makes up for in function0”ality.
Redeye or not to redeye
I have to be in Vegas for a conference in February from Mon-Wed. Would you (I) rather fly home Wednesday on a redeye from Las Vegas to Boston, 11pm Vegas departure at 5:30am Boston arrival Thursday morning, or stay Wednesday night and fly home Thursday AM at 11am Vegas time and arrive in Boston at 6:30pm.
I’m 40. I don’t sleep well on planes, so the redeye could suck. But, leaving Thursday and arriving at 6:30pm in Boston puts me in to the heat of rush hour, a possible 45+ minute ride home, and almost certainly missing kid bedtime (again) if things are even slightly delayed. Also, if I stick around Wednesday night I may be suckered in to more socializing/events/conference stuff – will be hard to just disappear and have a night to myself. I would not have to report to work on Thursday if I redeye but I could just disappear all day – could take a morning nap, for example.
Help me decide, because I’m otherwise about to flip a coin.
OP
Edited: I could NOT just disappear all day Thursday.
anon
will anyone know if you don’t really take the red eye? I would say take the wednesday night flight, get dinner at the airport or whatever to not go home until kids are definitely asleep, go home, go to bed, have thursday more or less to yourself.
Anonymous
I am 44 and literally would not take a red-eye flight at this point in my life for work. I would pretend I’d left on Wednesday, go to bed at a reasonable hour, get up and work a couple of hours, and then get the 11am flight. Realistically, I would realize a 6:30 arrival doesn’t get me started home until 7, which is when rush hour is starting to wind down.

Same. There is not a world in which I’m taking a red eye for anything other than a trip somewhere exotic and far away for my own personal travel.

I always take the daytime flight. A redeye turns me into a zombie for a solid week afterwards. It’s just not worth it.
Anon
I avoid red-eye flights as much as possible, especially short ones like this, so I’d fly home Thursday.

I would stay Wednesday night. I know I can’t sleep at all on planes, so I just don’t take redeyes if I have another option.

Personal rule of no red-eyes for me.
Given what you stated, my order of preference would be :
1. Jetblue departing 6am landing at 2pm on Thurs
2. Leave Thurs and risk missing bedtime
4. Taking a connection on Thurs that gets home earlier.
3. Redeye.

Missing kid bedtime is tough. That said, you’re not going to be getting to your car at Logan until 7 or so, which is usually the tail end of rush hour. Take the later flight. Duck out on Wednesday with the excuse of having work to do or taking an early flight home.

My experience is that people leave conferences early on the last day, so given your choices, I would skip the last couple of events and leave as early as possible on Wednesday.

This. This is the way. Last day almost never matters.
Cat
+1, from a quick check of flights, I would go for the 3:40pm JetBlue and plan to leave the conference after the last lunch session.
Nesprin
+1 the 2-3pm on Wednesday flights should get you home in the wee hours of Thursday.

On the other hand, if you have to get up with kids at 6 am, is getting home at 2 am really better than a redeye flight?

What would her spouse do if she weren’t there, though? Seems like if she gets home at 2 he should let her sleep and get up with the kids, if the alternative is that she stays another whole day.

Depends a lot on the age of the kids. With babies/young toddlers, it would have been easy for DH to get up with the kids and I could stealth sleep in. Preschoolers/early elementary, they would know I was home and the loud whispering and excitement would have been impossible to sleep through.
Anon
Yeah since the age of 4 or so there would be no sleeping in if my kid knew I was in the house, regardless of what DH did or didn’t do.

I wouldn’t consider a red eye
Anon
I personally can’t sleep on planes so I prefer the red eye as long as I can go right to sleep when I get to my destination.

Next day at a reasonable hour no question. And so what if you miss one bedtime, you’ll be a much better partner and parent getting some sleep and having a social life.

Are there no earlier flights on Thursday morning?
