I am so tempted to get the OG!!
Anon
Haha you should, and use it as a diaper bag – because that is exactly what I think the OG looks like :)
Anonymous
I think it looks like a diaper bag, too. I don’t get the love for it (except for as a diaper bag!)
preg 3L
Can anyone speak to whether it would work as a diaper bag? I am so tempted you guys, this is terrible!
Anonymous
I used it as a diaper bag when I traveled last year (it was also my carry-on on the flight) and now I use it as my gym bag. It works as a diaper bag, but the OG has tons of space that, in my opinion, make it too big to be used as a standard diaper bag. To give you an idea of the capacity, in mine right now I have a pair of sneakers, gym clothes, hair dryer, four full size hair product bottles, two full size brushes, a makeup bag, jewelry roll, full size perfume, full size deodorant, full size face wash, toner and moisturizer. Maybe the OMG would be a more appropriate size.

Diaper bags get gross. Things get spilled, things get sticky, you don’t need something that is high maintenance or spendy.

@Anonymous at 3:44pm, I definitely should not be using my very limited law school funds to purchase a bag like this.

If you still want a higher-end bag, check Coach and Kate Spade outlets. They usually have some for $150 or so.

I’m with anon at 3:22, I was contemplating a Lo & Sons for about a year, but I recently splurged on an MZ Wallace and love it!! I like the looks of the MZ Wallace better than Lo & Sons and I don’t carry a laptop too often, so that’s what factored into my decision.

Buy a ju ju be. You can throw those in the washing machine.

I forget – why are people so head-over-heels with this brand in particular? I remember people raving about them, but I don’t remember why. I love how they look and they seem to come in convenient sizes, but what is the major benefit that justifies the cost over other types of bags?
Deep End
I got one and the shoulder strap broke within a month of using it. They sent me a new shoulder strap and it happened again. The bag is otherwise convenient, but that left me pretty unhappy that I paid so much for a bag without a working shoulder strap.

I like mine because it’s very light and well-made. I also like small businesses.

I haven’t seen another bag that will go over the handles of a suitcase, hold a laptop, have tons of pockets, and be cute and light weight. Since I was replacing a 10 year old Herve chapelier, I felt fine about the cost.

Aha, it probably appeals to travelers, while those of us who don’t travel don’t need the features.

Ghurka makes a few bags that do that (and are leather). Not the friendliest price point compared to these bags though.

I have been meaning to weigh in since I got mine in August. I was unsure at first, but I love it. (I did not think it looked like a diaper bag, but worried it looked too much like luggage.) I got the OMG, and it holds everything I need for work: laptop, a few file folders, my lunch, a small makeup bag, a water bottle, and (if I don’t have a lot of work papers) my small cross-body purse. I like that it’ s not leather, so if you do like leather, that might be the only downside. I feel like it’s a professional bag that is actually made for women, from an aesthetic and organizational stand point. I feel very put together when I use it, and it has helped me stay more organized, primarily because of the various pockets. Overall, a great bag for me.

Student loans question?
I am super confused about student loans and I’ve having very little luck getting answers out of anywhere, but I’m not sure I’m even asking the right questions.
I graduated from law school in May and passed the bar last month, but I haven’t found full time work yet. Apparently to be eligible for unemployment deferment, I’d have to register with the unemployment office? What? Would it be smarter to do that or should I go ahead and register for IBR and then I’d have a 0.00 payment until I’m employed anyway? Am I understanding that correctly? (I’m not eligible for PAYE.) I’m sure many of you have paid down loans this way and may have some advice…also, how easy is it to change your repayment plan down the line if your financial circumstances improve?
Gah, this is so annoying. Any advice?
Sydney Bristow
My understanding is that if you defer your interest will be capitalized. I’d sign up for IBR. I did that and had tiny payments while I was temping. It was fairly easy to sign up for that and you just have to update it each year after filing taxes. I’m not sure about changing plans, but I think on IBR you can always pay extra to pay it off early. The most your payments would be based on your income would be the 10-year repayment amount.
R
From heart-to-hearts with my loan servicers, I understood that signing up unemployment+deferring loans and signing up for IBR with a 0.00 payment has the same effect (for right now). Interest will capitalize on the loan regardless. You can definitely pay off your loan early with IBR without penalty, so I understood that its better to go ahead and sign up for IBR, and just pay as much as possible when it is possible.
That being said, in the same boat as you. Graduated law school in May, got admitted to the bar yesterday, and working for free in local government right now. The job search is starting to feel really discouraging. Just had an interview, and having coffees/lunches/networking meetings several times a week. I’m exhausted and just want to be able to start somewhere so I can get excited about planning the rest of my career. Any words of encouragement/advice from Corporettes who’ve been through this?
Student loans question?
As much as this is THE WORST for the time being…we both passed first try, so high fives for that. We’ll get jobs. Have to hold on to that. Good luck to you going forward, btw. :)

Something WILL come through. I was job-hunting for a long time and can totally relate both to the inability to make plans for the future, and the exhaustion from an endless series of networking meetings and interviews. In the end, the pieces fell into place for me — and I think the only way to get through this kind of period is to have faith that they will for you, too. Good luck, and congrats on passing the bar!

Feeling alone
(posting again to try to get more responses, but thank you amelia earhart – unfortunately i’m not near you – and coach laura)
Regular poster going anon for this one…. I have started feeling more and more lonely and isolated recently. I’m on a temporary assignment at work at a new location, recently got out of a relationship, my close friends are all coupled off (or seem to have lost interest in me), and I’m just far enough from my family to not have an easy trip home. I’m not sure what to do or how to feel better. I’m hoping this is a phase that will pass, but it does seem to get harder every day, not easier. I don’t know who to talk to about it. I even have a therapist but he doesn’t seem to help that much on this matter (thinking its just a process from ending my last relationship). For anyone who may have advice, I would love to hear it.

I might consider getting a new therapist . . .

I agree with the idea to get a new therapist, but as far as concrete suggestions — I would look into activities in your community to the extent you can. Are there classes you can take? Like yoga, cooking, wine tasting, etc.? Also, have you looked at Meetup dot com? Or Living Social? Sometimes group discount companies have low-cost meetup opportunities. This sounds really tough though. Hugs.

I felt something similar when I was away on training this summer. I’m here for a second stint and it’s been a lot better. It’s hard when you’re somewhere for a short period, you don’t necessarily want to ‘invest’ in relationships when you’ll leave again soon but I find the little daily connections help, whether that’s chatting at your regular coffee shop or taking a drop-in class.
Ashley
Do some volunteer work? It always gets me out of my own head, even if only temporarily. Taking a night or Saturday class is another way I pull myself out of the doldrums.
zora
oh yeah, I was taking a weekly class at a very relaxed and friendly yoga studio for a while. That was nice. I agree with the volunteering thing, too.

Do you live in a cold area where there’s not much sunlight? I live in Chicago and started feeling that way a couple of weeks ago… I’m taking vit d supplements (5000iu/day) to combat the blues. It’s not a silver bullet and it just may be a placebo effect , but I think I feel slightly better. *hugs*
TBK
I agree with the suggestions to volunteer. I’d also look specifically for things to do that involve other people, involve the same group of people on a regular schedule over a period of time (e.g., weekly), and require actual interaction with the people instead of just being in the same room (you can certainly make friends with people in your yoga class, but it’s also easy to just go in, do your thing, and leave; you want something where everyone is forced to interact with one another by the very nature of the activity). Volunteering can be like that, especially in situations where you’re doing something physical and are likely to chat with other people while you work.
Bonnie
Look for meetup groups in the area. In addition to finding a new therapist, it may help for you to meet others.
R
I second the yoga/volunteering/taking classes! Filling up my weekend days helped me feel less low in the evenings. You could also try taking work/a book to coffee shops, which feels a little like having company and isn’t a bad way to find someone to have a conversation with.

iPhone luddite
In part thanks to recent posts about phones on here and in part due to my growing frustration with BlackBerry, I have ordered my very first cell phone. Okay, first *personal* cell phone and first non-BB but I still feel like a luddite. The new, personal phone is an iPhone. I know I need a case to protect it. Do I also need some kind of film or sticker thingy to protect the screen? Do I put that on myself or are there people who will do that for me? I’d prefer that someone do it for me… so how do I identify a good place in my area? Please don’t say at my local cellular carrier’s store because I hear horror stories about the lines there…
roses
Others may disagree, but I have found that I don’t need a screen protecter if I am using a case that comes up over the edges of my screen – that is, if I dropped my phone face-down, the edges of the case act as a bumper and the screen would not touch the ground. I have a case from Incipio that I bought with my latest iPhone and it has worked great so far.
Famouscait
What style do you have from this brand? I’m about to upgrade to an iPhone 5, and have been looking for something like my Griffin “Elan” case (which they frustratingly don’t make for the 5). I agree that the raised edge makes all the difference when I inevitably drop/fling my phone to the ground, but it’s hard to tell from the photos exactly how raised the edge is.
roses
I’m pretty sure it’s this one, although I don’t remember exactly since I bought it in-store: http://www.incipio.com/cases/iphone-cases/iphone-5c-cases/dualpro-case-for-iphone-5c.html
zora
I think the reason for a screen protector is for the screen to not get scratched. Sometimes it ends up in my pocket or in my bag next to my wallet, or next to my keys. Any of those things could scratch the screen, with no dropping necessary. I have had a few iphones, and have gotten scratches on the screen protector and have replaced it, so I’m glad i still have a nice pristine screen to read.
I just buy the ‘no glare’ screen protector from the apple store when I am there. You can buy it online, too. Don’t go off brand, though, I had one horrible screen protector basically just fall right off like 2 weeks after I put it on, total waste of money.
I just put it on myself, it’s not really that hard. But you could also go to an Apple Store and buy the screen protector there, and ask them to put it on for you. I’m sure they will do it, they always have a ton of blue shirts around with nothing to do ;o) Honestly, one reason i stick with the iphone is the service, and being able to walk into an apple store and get a real human to help me.
So, I like just the simple no glare screen protector. And a simple silicon case from Belkin that just pops on, also bought at the apple store.
AIMS
FWIW, I have had many iphones, no screen protector, no case half the time, and no issues. The only damage I’ve ever had is from dropping it face down on a railroad platform (waaaaay down). Screen protectors get scratched much more easily than the actual screen. I am not a careful person, btw. It is meant to withstand the occasion key brush up. I would just get a slim case (more because the phone can be slippery) and not worry about the rest.
zora
Well, now that they can’t replace the screen at all, but have to replace the entire phone, in the unlikely event that it gets scratched, I would rather spend $15 every 18mo-2 years to keep the screen in good condition for 3-4 years. Since I don’t like paying to upgrade my phone every two years, but want to keep a phone going for as long as possible and get my money’s worth out of it. But to each her own.
Natalie
I drop my phone constantly (may 5-10 times a week) and I had it for over 2 years before dropping it and cracking the glass on the back of. Cost $30 to have the glass swapped out, which is less than most of the decent cases.
amelia earhart
I am in the same camp as roses, if my case has a high edge that acts as a bumper, I don’t use a screen protector. If you do want a screen protector, someone at your wireless carrier’s brick and mortar store should be able to help.
meme
I use a Speck candy shell case (very durable), plus stick-on screen protector. I have small kids and my phone needs lots of protection from drops and scratches, but the candy shell is low profile and nice looking (IMO). I tried the no-glare screen protectors, and they made the screen look pixelated (and I want the benefit of that beautiful high-res iPhone screen), so I go with the clear screen protectors.
R
I’m rough on my gadgets in general, and throw my phone in the same pocket as my keys, so I need a screen protector regardless of case. I use Ghost Armor – I have them on my phone, iPad, nook, etc. They’re usually in a kiosk at every mall – they put it on for you and if it ever gets messed up, they replace it for $5.
OP
Yup, there’s a Ghost Armor at the nearest mall. Thanks!!!
kjoirishlastname
While not in the corporate world (I work for local govt); I can at least speak to the iPhone case issue. If you don’t particularly care about the diminutiveness or daintiness of your phone, and you have the money, buy a Lifeproof case. It is 2 pieces including screen protector, plus it is 100% waterproof. I can vouch: Husband and I went on a sans-kids vacay in Tucson last year. Got in the hot tub at the condo community we stayed at. Phone was in his pocket. No harm, no foul!
They’re not pretty, but sometimes function over form.
If that is a concern, then yes, get a screen protector. Even if you get a different cover too. Screen protector is nice for protecting from scratches. Like your keys in your purse. I have had several different cases for mine before the Lifeproof, and the one I liked the most was an iFrogz Luxe case. Super thin and lightweight, and fairly inexpensive. With those, coupled with the 3-pack of screen protectors, I kind of consider them disposable commodities. Change out your screen protector once a month or so, and the cases are so cheap, you can change with your outfit.
Lady Harriet
Just as a warning, my friend had a Lifeproof case that was defective and broke when she tried to take the phone out of it. She switched to a waterproof Otterbox and has been much happier with it.
another Kat
I recommend going on ebay and buying one of the super cheap multi packs of screen protectors, generally from China or a US reseller. Even with high end screen protectors, the protector eventually get scratched up and you’re going to replace it anyway, so might as well buy a bunch of cheap ones so that you can replace as needed and have plenty of spares when learning to put it on. Just watch YouTube- the most important thing is getting it down before dust gets underneath; air bubbles are not a problem since they can be pushed out with a credit card.

I haven’t read the whole thing yet, but this line jumped out as I was skimming: “Feinstein makes herself available to every new female Senator who wants advice on how she runs her offices. In her trademark pearls, she is Pacific Heights proper and even has a dress code for her staff: stockings and skirts of a certain length.”
Thoughts? Do you think that means female staffers don’t get to wear pants or that when they do wear skirts, they have to be long?
zora
I’ve been in her DC office, women do wear pants. The Senator wears pants herself often. I think it means just not skirts that are too short. I haven’t checked out skirt length exactly, but I don’t think they have to be midi length or anything, probably something like what we’ve discussed here: 1-2 inches above the knee.

my go-to places for rugs are Home Depot/Lowes (check in store – they sometimes have better selection), RugsUsa, and Overstock. Sometimes Costco has surprisingly good selections as well, and Ikea can as well. We bought 3 8x10s when moved into our house a few years ago, all from Home Depot, and I’m pretty sure that each was around $150 or maybe $175? We have been really happy with the HD rugs so far. Heavy daily use and no obvious signs of wear. The ones we picked weren’t terribly plush or fancy but are soft enough under foot and neutral contemporary patterns that hide dirt pretty well. No complaints here!

overstock is great for this, as is target on line. as long as i have small animals and small children, all of my rugs come from these locations. i think 200 is the most Ive paid. it can be a bit overwhelming, so search by size and color, then prepare to look for a while. i add anything i like to my cart and then go back and look at the cart when i am done.

I mean, they might have been a little cranky, but it could have been about something else. I’m sure people do this accidentally at LPQ all the time. AND they had empty tables and you left a tip. You did fine! If you had been taking up a table in a full restaurant, and hung out for 2 hours talking on the phone it would have been pretty tacky. But the fact that you left a tip for the server who had your table absolves you of all wrongdoing/guilt. ;o)
TBK
Why would you feel bad if you left a tip? It sounds like some server got a gigantic tip for doing no work. I don’t think it was even a problem, but if you felt bad, you could have given 10% tip to the cashier and a 10% tip at the table (so divide a regular tip between the two people who waited on you) and been done with it – no harm, no foul.

I am interviewing for a lateral position (law) tomorrow. I am a junior associate. It is a 30 minute screening interview. Any tips? Any idea what these interviews are usually like? I assume much different than a summer associate interview?
ABC
Honestly, the screening interviews for junior laterals aren’t always all that much different than summer associate interviews. Sure, they will probably ask you more about what you have been doing at your current firm, but a lot of it (in my experience at least) was just chit chatting and “standard” interview questions (why do you want to leave, why do you want to work here, etc.). Thirty minutes will fly by!

Be prepared for the prospect that it may last longer! My last “30 minute interview” that was supposed to be just with the head of HR, ended up being an hour and a half and with 3 partners as well.

I love these, but wooden heels make me leery. I have a pair of Frye pumps with a wood heel that are so beautiful, but it took over a year for my dogs to stop barking after a day of wearing them.

Does anyone have suggestions for other business or fashion related blogs? The ones I read seem to be posting more baby/family/relationship content lately, which does not interest me.

Capitol Hill Style has 0 babies.

It gets recommended her a lot, but I find Capitol Hill Style way more useful on the fashion front than this site. I love the commenter community here, but I’m not very inspired by Kat’s fashion picks, generally. And it definitely focuses on fashion, with a dollop of career, and no baby/relationship stuff (YAY).

I think these would be really cute if you have a vintage-y style, but otherwise I don’t know how I would incorporate them into my own (not-vintage-y) wardrobe. There’s just something that screams “hipster thrift store score” about these, and I think it’s the toe shape/cleavage and the angle of the chunky heel. They’re cute, but I don’t think I could do them for work at all….

Funny, because this is one of the first shoes featuered on thissite that I could really see myself wearing and that’s pretty fair description of my style :p For the office, I’d wear them with trousers.
Woohoo
I just found out today that I got a raise after one year at NewJob! It’s not huge, but after not getting a raise for four years at OldJob (which can s*ck it), getting a raise in my first year here is a major ego boost! Woohoo!

Congrats!

Anyone know of shoes similar to this but with a 2″ heel?

Um, couldn’t find a lower heel, but I found these with a higher heel (????)

Has anyone ever gotten a notice from Pinterest alerting you that a pin has changed price? This happened today, weirdly! Unfortunately the shoes were out in my size, but still, neat!

Yes! I love this feature. I think it’s new. Down side, it reminds me of things I want that I may have forgotten about and I suddenly want to buy again bc it’s cheaper.

I love y’all except for talking about weddings but I’d love you advice now. What do you think about diamond engagement rings vs sapphire? I want a big shiny ring – I know that is dumb but it is important to me. Sapphires are more affordable and sometimes ethically sourced.
Does anyone have a sapphire ring? Do you get sick of it being blue and not matching everything? TVYMIA.

My first engagement ring was a sapphire and I loved it. I felt like it went with everything.

There are a variety of colors of sapphires, much like diamonds, I think. Monday, I sent a link to my boyfriend for a peach/champagne colored sapphire engagement ring that was over 3 carats and very reasonably priced.

A friend of mine has a sapphire ring that is lovely. It’s your engagement ring, get what makes you and your fiance happy. I don’t think your wedding jewelry has to match anything except it is nice for the wedding band and e-ring to look good next to each other. I don’t see how a colored stone messes that up.

I had a sapphire engagement ring and I also loved it. We could afford a nicer ring with a sapphire and I didn’t care about a diamond and liked the look of the sapphire. I had tried on an antique sapphire ring at Macy’s estate jewelry right before we got engaged so he knew what I liked (sapphire in the center, diamonds on the side) then had it made at a store in Philly. My wedding ring was a channel set that was made with a bit of a V to fit up against it and it was channel set with diamonds and sapphires.

I have a sapphire and it is everything I hoped for and more. I worried about it not matching clothes and other jewelry before I received it, but I don’t worry about that anymore. It looks great with everything!

Argh, self, repeat after me. I don’t want to work for a startup. I don’t want to work for a startup. I don’t want to work for a startup. Even if it IS a startup that I can totally geek out about and that sounds perfect and they think I’d be perfect and they’re willing to wait until next year and argh.
