Threadjack–
Ladies, when do you decide that salon coloring is just too cumbersome/expensive and move to drugstore coloring?
Here’s the backstory–my hair is naturally auburn/brown with substantial red undertones. I don’t like to look like I have roots or dye my hair, as I dye to cover gray, and dye to match my normal color. I am early thirties, have been coloring for about five years. I recently switched from a Redken to a Matrix salon (long distance move, had to find a new place).
I have found that a roots only dye job is not just a little gray after 5 weeks, but embarrassingly so. No change in my shampoo or routine…I just look awful, tons of grays, cannot cover with a part (my hair is curly).
Is it time to call it? I am terrified of picking the wrong color at the drugstore, or overdying and ending up with _completely_ red hair (proof: unfortunate Sun-In incident in 1994!). Also, because I have very dry hair, I would need to only do my roots, which I think would be tricky to do on myself at home.
Should I talk with my colorist about longer-lasting options? Ditch the colorist and head to the drugstore? Have you successfully done roots-only color at home? Help?!? My hair does not look good.
Cornellian
I have hair that’s somewhere between red, blonde, and light brown (dark-ish strawberry?) and played around with Henna a few years ago. If you’re committed to not doing chemical coloring for a while, I might consider that. you can start off at whatever level of intensity you want to see how your hair responds. Some women will leave it on for a whole day or over night and covered with plastic wrap, but I would just leave it on for 30 minutes or even mix it with conditioner your first time and leave on your roots for five minutes and see how it comes out.
I would consider Lush’s brown-red henna block a good place to start, although I know some henna purists would argue against it.
Sweet as Soda Pop
Cornellian, your hair color sounds very similar to mine. Did you use the brown-red henna block that you mention above? Or did you find something else that worked better?
Thanks!
Cornellian
I actually used the lighter one “Rouge Mama”. If you go on their website there are hundreds of reviews, and most reviewers give lots of details about exactly how they applied it and for how long. I’m not trying to cover grey, so I can’t speak to that, but making a paste out of the henna and chamomile tea and covering my head for about 20 minutes really brought out the red in my hair. The smell is pretty strong and it stays for a day or so, but it’s really gentle on hair and seems to make it healthier, unlike chemical hair dyes.
If you’re applying for any longer than 20 minutes, I’d be really careful about not accidentally dying your hairline by covering it with vaseline or something similar.
Anonymous Poser
It usually takes longer for the color to “take” to gray hair in my experience. I left my henna on for about 4 hours to cover my grays. I didn’t use Lush: just pure henna.
For comparison, when I used henna in my twenties, just to play around with my hair color, I left it on for maybe an hour or so.
NOLA
Given the challenges of doing it yourself that you describe, I would at least give it a chance in having a discussion with your colorist.
FP
Not sure if this will work for you – but I have tons of premature gray (prob 75% gray and I am in my 20s) and I can’t handle having obvious gray roots just yet. I go to a colorist who is on her own in a salon of independent stylists. I talked to her about going in every 3 weeks and she gave me a decent deal that includes root touch up and no blow dry (which I am fine with).
Anonymous
I would suggest a demi permanent color treatment if you want to go the at-home route. It will be gentler and fade over time instead of growing out with defined roots. I have dark brown/auburn hair and have been using the Umberto hair color in red cayenne for years and it is amazing. It’s very inexpensive and makes my hair silky and soft. The box looks like it very red, but it really is just dark brown with a bit of red. I cannot recommend this enough, I love it!

Thank you, this looks amazing. And I will talk with my stylist. And I am really interested in Henna too….definitely some good options! I knew the Hive would have good suggestions. Thank you, ladies!

I am in the same boat with dark hair and fast growing grey roots, and my (amazing) stylist lets me come in at the 3 week mark to put dye on the roots only (and not a thorough job – around my face, anywhere near my part, but that’s it) and lets me walk out the door and wash it out at home 30 minutes later. She charges me $10 more on my regular visits for this service, and it is soooooo worth it. Now I go every three weeks, but half the time it is a 15 minute/10 dollar appointment. Without it I would have given up and gone back to boxed color, including the inevitable botches.
Holly
Find out what redken color your old salon used and order it off ebay. Or, if there’s a hair cuttery by you go there for color, they use redken and its cheap, and then you can still have a professional apply it and not worry about making a mess in your bathroom.
anon
I don’t think you’ll find a longer lasting option. You see gray at 5 weeks because your hair has grown 1/2 inch or so in that time, and you now have a noticeable amount of gray. I’m in the same boat and hair color is something that’s worth spending some money on IMO. Good color makes a huge difference in your appearance, and by the same token, bad color can be really aging and just plain look awful.
Senior Attorney
I colored my hair red for years and finally gave it up when I got majorly white/gray because red dye + white hair = pink. Ugh. Not what I was going for. I switched to blonde and that has been much better. But honestly, it’s my view that at some point you have to call in the professionals.
I am a maniac about not letting my roots show, which means I’m in the salon every three weeks, rain or shine. It costs a fortune but it’s worth it to me. Plus I enjoy my every-third-Saturday mornings in the salon and they treat me like a queen because I’m such a loyal customer.
j
I switched from box dye to mixing my own from the beauty supply store. It’s not that hard and I’ll never go back to a box.
anon
I am similar to you – curly hair, about 50% or more gray, and I start going crazy at the roots at about 3 weeks. I admit to using box color on mine, here are my tips. Buy a lighter color than you think you need, because it always ends up darker in real life. Also, go to somewhere like sally beauty supply and get the bowl and brush like your stylist uses – this makes it much easier to apply to your roots. Shake up the color in the bottle, then pour into the bowl and paint it on the roots. Follow whatever the directions are for root touch up – usually it’s so many minutes on roots, then pull onto the rest of your hair for last 10 minutes so you don’t have a definite line where the new color went on. I’d love to pay someone to do it for me every 3 weeks, but it’s just not in my budget and I don’t have time. My hair is mostly light brown, and I’ve gone lighter in the past, which means I can go a little longer before touch ups.
Anon
I have fast growing hair and also can’t stand seeing the roots. Plus my hair is dark so I feel like gray in my part and on my temples is super noticeable. If I could take the time, I’d be in the salon every 3 weeks for a touch up. Instead I use that Clairol Nice n’ Easy root touch up kit. It helps me stretch out my salon visits to 5-6 weeks. The color matching is easy as there are not a ton of choices.
Windchime
This exactly what I do. After 3 weeks, I have some pretty good gray roots going (I call it my “skunk stripe”), so I use the Clairol Root touch-up kit. It comes with a tiny bit of color, a little try and a little brush and gloves. It takes about 10-15 minutes to do and I just do several inches on either side of my part, plus the roots around my face. It’s under $10 and it makes it so I can do a professional color every 6 weeks instead of having to go in at 3 weeks.
There is a wide range of colors and you could try out a couple to see which one suits you best. I use Medium Golden Brown, which is actually darker than it sounds and works perfectly with my reddish/brown hair.
M
Do you find that the color actually washes out? I have considered the Nice n’ Easy route, but I worry that it will not wash out as promised and I’ll wind up having a stripe of grey hair at my part all the same.
Anon
It doesn’t wash out of the gray it just covered.
NYNY
I used to manage a hair salon, so I can assure you that your stylist will want to discuss options with you before you make a decision. If it’s your roots showing, then that’s new growth and not a matter of how long-lasting your color is. You probably need more frequent roots-only touch-ups.
There are also mascara-like or spray-on non-permanent roots touch-up products out there. You may want to try one of those.
If you do go down the path of at-home color, keep in mind that you want to apply it only to the new growth for most of the processing time. Otherwise, the color keeps building up on the ends and you get a striped effect.
Em
“Cheap and Chic”?
Anon
Cheap and Chic is the secondary Moschino line. The “cheap” part is meant to be ironic, as the line it still designer.
Baconpancakes
I think the joke is in poor taste. Only people who have the cash to buy $1,000 dresses might find it amusing.
preg anon
Exactly.
Em
Yeah.
anon-oh-no
how is this poor taste? Its high end fashion and i dont see how it can possibly be insulting to anyone.
Em
I wouldn’t say it’s insulting, per se, but it does conjure up an image of rich trophy wives sitting around a pool with margaritas faux-joking about how “little” they spend on clothing.
Anon
Seeing as Moschino has made a name for itself by embracing the absurdity of high fashion, I think it’s rather fitting.
Orangerie
Seriously. Of all the things to be offended by..
Divaliscious11
But people DO have $1K for a dress? Lots of them, and lots of dresses? Why is it poor taste?
Divaliscious11
And $1K is “cheap” next to the top line…. comparatively
Em
So I think it’s worth distinguishing between something that’s in poor taste and a stand should be taken and something that’s in poor taste on a level that’s merely eyeroll worthy, and I think this is the latter. But I think this is eyeroll worthy because if you’re in a position where you can afford to drop $1,000 on a dress without thinking twice about it, you are more privileged than 99.999999% of the world. If you’re that privileged, that is amazing – go you! However, you should probably also have some awareness about that level of privilege; joking (or “joking”) about how cheap your $1,000 dress is is basically the exact opposite of demonstrating awareness.
Baconpancakes
Em, thanks for that. Your explanation is how the comment was meant, but I didn’t feel like going into the details. You hit the nail on the head.
Anon
Because it’s not cheap. Most people would never be able to afford that price, so it kind of seems like a douchey in-joke.
anon-oh-no
i just dont get the explanation of “poor taste.” I get it, you are not wild about the tongue-in-cheek reference Moschino has decided to use for its less expensive brand of clothes. fine. But the fact that many people cant afford the clothes is totally irrelevant. this is not any more poor taste than baconpancakes is poor taste for those of us who are vegitarians (so as to not start a fight, im not offended by baconpancakes, despite my aversion to bacon).
This is fashion. high end fashion. And “cheep” is such a relative term — by way of example, a pair of shoes might be cheep if its less than $200 for some, $100 for others, and $50 for yet others.
Orangerie
I think it’s worth distinguishing between what the designer has decided to name this line of clothing, and the customers who can afford to purchase the clothes. Someone who chooses to buy this dress may very well be more privileged than “99.999999% of the world,” but that doesn’t mean they are unaware of their privilege or are sitting around the pool with margaritas joking about how cheap it is. It’s just a clothing line for crying out loud, there’s no need to make inferences about anyone who has ever shopped there.
Em
Orangerie, nobody is making inferences about anyone who has shopped there! We’re saying why the name of the brand makes us roll our eyes. Truly, it’s not a personal attack; just an explanation of why it’s a stupid thing to name a brand of clothing.
Orangerie
Right, but this line is what makes me take pause:
“if you’re in a position where you can afford to drop $1,000 on a dress without thinking twice about it… you should probably also have some awareness about that level of privilege; joking (or “joking”) about how cheap your $1,000 dress is is basically the exact opposite of demonstrating awareness.”
At that point it isn’t at all about the designer’s choice of name, it’s a comment on the presumed privilege and lack of awareness of a hypothetical customer.
Em
It is not – it’s commenting on the assumptions inherent in naming a brand that. If you buy the brand because you like the clothes, it doesn’t apply to you (if you buy the brand then go around telling people “check out my uber cheap dress! I’m a frugalista!” it probably does, but I trust nobody would do that outside of Moschino’s marketing department.)
emeralds
This has always made me roll my eyes. Seriously, high fashion designer-y industry-y people can be SO clueless and tone-deaf sometimes.
With that said, I love the dress. I don’t think it would look flattering on my shape because of the placement of the black/tweed colorblock on the skirt, but still. Gorgeous and work-appropriate, but with some personality–exactly how I (hope that I) dress.
Sydney Bristow
I am so in love with this dress.

Tattoo Removal?
Has anyone had a tattoo removed? I have a small tattoo on the top of my foot that I want to have removed, but I don’t know anything about it except I’ve heard it hurts more than getting the tattoo itself. That doesn’t bother me, but are there different methods or devices? I want to do this right!
MK
I’m in the process of getting mine removed. It’s a “tr*mp stamp” on my lower back. I’ve been going to Dr. Tattoff (a national chain) and so far have had very good results–no blistering/scarring, just nice fading. They do laser removal–not sure if there are other methods.
It hurts more than anything I ever have experienced in my life. The good news is that each session only lasts for 15-30 seconds, so the pain is over quickly (afterwards you just feel tender for a few days). They give you a numbing cream to put on beforehand, but it hasn’t brought me much relief.
They told me I would need 10 sessions. I have done 5 so far. They are spread about 8 weeks apart to allow your body to break up the tattoo in-between sessions (supposedly the longer you wait between sessions, the better the results). The total cost for me is about $600, which I had to pay up front. They guarantee free additional sessions if it takes more than the quoted number, but I am praying that I don’t need any more than 10!!!

Yay! HOLIDAY SPLURGE MONDAY! I love today b/c I am not being nuzzeled by men, and can rest in my OWN apartement!
I went to the Hamton’s with Myrna this weekend and it was cold and damp. FOOEY! And this guy who was a banker, was nuzzeling me on Saturday night at the house, and he did NOT even know me. He figured b/c he was a banker and I was a lawyer and MYRNA’s Freind, that I would be very receptive to his OVERTURE’S. And b/c he had been drinkeing beer and peppermint Shnap’s, his mouth STUNK! Why would I want to nuzzel with a smelly drunk, just b/c he was a banker? Not a chance, Mr. Banker. I do NOT even know what he does at Bearclay’s — I think they are a bank, but I have NEVER seen a branche office near me. He say’s he want’s to be a trader, but trust me, this guy has breathe that can stop a truck! I think he thought that I would just melt b/c he had a ROLEX watch. I am NOT the type of girl that is impresed by stuff like that.
MYRNA went into the other room with this other guy, and I am NOT sure what they were doeing, but they BOTH had to leave when I told the Bearclay’s guy that I was NOT interested in stayeing over, and that he should go back to where ever it was he came from, and the other guy was the one who was driveing. YAY! Myrna did NOT seem to be to concerned and I think that guy was proababley tryeing to see if Myrna would have sex with him also. FOOEY! Who want’s guy’s that just want to have sex, then burp and walk away. I am readeing this book that tells us women NOT to put up with this. We are worth more than just haveing sex with.
There was this guy, Rousseau, that was quoted in the book. FOOEY on Rousseau, b/c men must be listening to him. I will get that quote for tomororow, but all the HIVE should p’ost this quote on their door when a man think’s he is goieng to have free sex, and just tell the men that you do NOT subscribe to what this doosh said hundred’s of year’s ago. I’m thinking of stopping in Sephora for the VIB sale today. I was looking at the tarte matte lip surgence stains/balms (in particular, the light pink shade). Anyone have any experience with these?

I had one of the dark pink ones. I like it but it’s not terribly long lasting and has a tendency to come off unevenly. I got mine in a birchbox box, free, not sure I would buy it @ full price.

I have no experience with them, but I love Tarte cosmetics. I think they do a fantastic job. Sephora has a pretty great return policy, too. You can return anything.

Love these. I have the enchanted color and the matte one in fiery. They non-matte ones are very much just super fancy lip balms, but they tend to turn into a lip stain as the balm part wears off. The matte one is like a really creamy matte lipstick. I really like them, and wear them almost every day!

-grey leggings
-black boots
-target long muted purple cocoon sweater (covers my b*tt)
-purple pashmina scarf
Basically wearing almost all target, ha. Well, I feel like I’m still in pajamas, so who cares!!

Working, and on deadline (why am I procrastinating? Oh yeah, lunch break) for the 15th. Houndstooth cuffed pants, 3/4 sleeve black boatneck stretchy top, chignon, gray/black pashmina, long dangly earrings.

I work for the government and we’re not closed today. I’m spending a lot of time out in the field today, which is a literal field, so I’m pretty casual: J.Crew cashmere cable v-neck sweater frm 2006 in sky blue, white v-neck GAP l/s tee, tan wool Talbots trousers, Doc Marten 4-eye oxfords, and a puffy LL Bean vest. Trying to balance between serious lawyer and it’s seriously cold and muddy out here.

Grey “snakeskin” wedges, dark wash bootcut jeans, white top with cowl neck, colorful bib necklace with gold, green, red, purple, blue & yellow enamel, sage green blazer w/ cuffs rolled up showing the pale grey/white striped lining, watch, gold studs.
This dress
Has anyone clicked on the link? This dress seems to be way too tight on the model (back view). I am generous of hip, so this wouldn’t work on me (and for the $, I could get a nice Pendleton wool dress that doesn’t make me look like it’s time to give up the buffet – I AIN’T GIVING UP THE BUFFET).
Susedna
+1 on not giving up the buffet. That said, I like this dress. Not enough to buy it, but I can admire it from afar.

My four favorite words in the English language are “all you can eat.”

Oh my, you are right! Not only does it appear to be too tight, but the slit in back is way high. Like venturing into the danger zone high. Maybe that’s because the model is 6 feet tall.
Confrontation
I need to confront a senior associate today about some inappropriate comments he made to and about me on Friday, and I’m really nervous about how to approach him. I’m a midlevel biglaw associate and SA and I have been working, and will be working, very closely together lately. SA is a pretty gruff guy and a self-proclaimed pr*ck but I have a thick skin so it doesn’t faze me. On Friday, though, he made a few comments that I think I need to address: he made a derrogatory and gender-laden comment about me to opposing counsel, made a condescending and dismissive comment about a former relationship of mine/went on a smug parent tirade, and made a passive aggressive comment suggesting I was brown nosing him when I said he did a good job handling something. There wasn’t an opportunity to address the comments in any detail on Friday.
SA and I are going to be spending a lot of hours together over the next few months, so I want to nip this in the bud. I think I’ll start with the brown nosing comment and ask if he wants constructive criticism from me. He’s been hesitant to give me feedback, so I think it’s a good opportunity for me to reinforce that I want feedback from him and to the extent he wants it from me I’m happy to give it. The personal stuff, though, I’m nervous about. I’m concerned he’s going to be condescending and defensive, tell me I’m being too sensitive, and try to have a debate with me about whether his comments were inappropriate. Any tips on how to handle this? TIA!
Avodah
Ok, a few questions: Were there witnesses to any of this? Would they back you up? Can you address it with his boss or your boss? Do you think they would support you? How much clout does this guy have? Lastly…is this something you really want to address?
I firmly think the workplace should never tolerate harassment, derogatory comments, etc. Nonetheless, you need to be sure you can handle this if it escalates. That said…
Use “I” messages. “I felt hurt when you said…” “I feel uncomfortable when you make comments about….” Good luck. These things aren’t easy.
Kanye East
Actually, I’d go in the other direction. I wouldn’t make it about me or my feelings–I would make it about the fact that what he said was objectively inappropriate.
Senior Attorney
+1
If you make it about your hurt feelings, you come across as weak. It should be about HIS inappropriate conduct in the workplace.
Divaliscious11
Negative. That’s boyfriend/husband/girlfriend/wife speak….
Don’t make this about feelings…
Anne Shirley
I wouldn’t touch the brown nosing comment with a 10 foot pole myself. I’d start with the comment to opposing counsel. Tell him you found it unprofessional and would appreciate him refraining in the future. And then stop talking. It isn’t a debate. You don’t need to win or explain yourself or justify your feelings. It is simply a fact that you are sharing with him.
mascot
I agree that you need to present it as not up for debate. Also, if Friday was the first time he said something offensive, which you commented on, I’d probably hold off to see if he fixes it. Then you can correct him closer in time to the event.
Senior Attorney
I’m thinking something like “If you ever put me down in front of opposing counsel like that again, I will have no choice but to cut off your balls. Do I make myself clear?”
OP
I might be stealing this line.
Contratian
This all passed without comment when it happened. You say you’ll be working with him a lot in the future. I’d wait until the next time something comes out and if it needs a “What do you mean by that?!” then let it fly.
Do you want to be the person who stewed about this all weekend? I don’t think so. [His mother gets to do that.]
Another time, you will be the person who is reponding appropriately to something inappropriate. That is the person you’ll want to be (and I suspect that opportunity will come).
OP
Well it wasn’t exactly without comment, I always said something like, “that’s not cool,” but there were other people around so I couldn’t exactly go to the mat with him about it at the time. I take your point though about coming off like I’ve stewed about it all weekend, so I’ve been going back and forth about whether to say anything.
AnonInfinity
Given this info, I wouldn’t say anything about it today. Why do you feel you need to go to the mat on it? I’d handle it like Dianna Berry suggests below.
OP
He just brushed it off; I think he’s the kind of person that, if there’s a problem, you need to sit him down, look him in the eye, and command his attention. It’s bad enough that he’s already made one demeaning comment about me to opposing counsel, I really don’t want to wait for him to do it again before correcting him in a forceful way. But then again I don’t want to come off like an oversensitive girly girl… ugh idk what to do.
Diana Barry
+1, I agree. I would give a very stern “That is inappropriate” the next time it happens. If other people are there, and if he then says nothing, you can also apologize ON HIS BEHALF for his comment, to the other people.
KS
OP: Only you know the dynamics involved. If you truly think he’s the kind of person that, if there’s a problem, you need to sit him down, look him in the eye, and command his attention — then you need to sit him down, look him in the eye, and command his attention. I personally think it would be a bad idea to wait until it happens again. I think your original instinct is probably right: that you need to nip this in the bud NOW.
ss
“May I ask you something ? Do you really think that I [fill in derogatory statement here] ? No ? Then why do you say it ?”
If he does confirm that he thinks it and the thing is really unambiguously offensive, tell him so and proceed to escalate. In the more likely scenario whereby he tries to turn it into a debate about appropriateness, just keep coming back to “why do you say it if you don’t think it ?” and don’t back off without a proper apology and undertaking not to repeat in future. Be prepared to state that his derogatory side-bars about you to opposing counsel simply make you both, plus your client, plus your firm, look dumb.
I don’t agree with saying things like “I feel hurt” or “I feel uncomfortable”. It only confuses the issue -are you being over -sensitive ? – when this is simply about his inappropriate behaviour.
Hope it works out ok! You are absolutely right and brave to nip it early.
Monday
I agree that “I feel” statements can be risky when you’re dealing with someone who doesn’t care about you. The person can always just reply “well that wasn’t my intention, I’m sorry you feel that way” and you’re either back where you started (plus a bit more condescension) or you have to escalate to making points about how it impacts the work, as ss outlines above. Even if you’re totally right, you will have undercut yourself by starting out focusing on your feelings. I’d tend to keep it all business from the start.

Wondering
I walked around my city for about 2 hours yesterday in my comfortable boots. This morning, the heel on my right foot is really really hurting. Anyone ever have this problem?
Anne Shirley
Sore feet after walking a lot? Um, yeah! I find boots to be particular offenders. They’re heavy for me feet after a while.
S in Chicago
It may be a minor bit of plantar fasciitis irritation. Stretch yourself out a bit–bend your foot upward against a wall and lean in or stand on a stair with the front portion of your foot and lift yourself up and down. It sounds strange, but a lot of heel pain actually comes from your mid-foot needing to be stretched. Flat shoes, improper arch support, and lots of walking on concrete can all contribute to heel pain. When you get home tonight if it’s still hurting, roll your foot over a cold pop can.
Wondering
Thanks so much! PF is exactly what I was worried about. This is more than just sore feet, I have never felt my heel ache like this.

Not sure if this would be a good fit for you (ha!), but I love my Enell bra. It straps me in and doesn’t let the girls so anywhere.
Anon
I recommend the Panache sports bra. I’m a 32DD and as much as I love my Moving Comfort and other less expensive brands for low impact activities like yoga or pilates, I think the Panache or the Enell (recommended below by LizNYC) to be way more supportive and more appropriate for high impact activities like running and horseback riding. The best thing about the Panache bra is that you don’t have to contort yourself to put it on – it has a back closure.
Anon
Panache and the booby bracer from Lululemon are the best for sure (32F here). Moving Comfort are fine, but not great. Shock Absorbers are good, but difficult to put on. Ta Ta Tamer from lululemon is pretty good, but is better if you wear the straps crossed and that can be a little difficult to get on. The Wacoal mentioned is ok. Le Mystere also makes one that is pretty good.

hunting for a tote bag
I’m looking for a casual, relatively lightweight zip-top tote bag that I can use on a daily basis. I don’t mind leather straps or details, but I would rather that the bag itself not be leather, just for weight issues. I prefer a neutral color–dark gray would be ideal–but am not opposed to prints. Hoping to spend less than $100.
I like the Everlane classic tote and have come across a number of others that look nice on Etsy. Where else should I be looking?

And just to be clear upfront: the Le Pliage bag isn’t for me. Thanks!

JPK Paris. I have a dark grey one that I got from ideeli for around $35, although I think the regular retail price is in the around $100 range. You can find them on sale pretty regularly though. I use my Baggallini A La Carte bag all the time. It’s nylon with leather (maybe “leather”) handles. About $95 retail, but ebags.com has it on sale frequently, in addition to their widely available discount codes.

Running on Thanksgiving
So we just decided to run a half-marathon on Thanksgiving morning. Any prep/cooking tips from ladies who’ve run and hosted Thanksgiving on the same day? I already prep a lot of things a day in advance (desserts done, sides prepped to the point of “pop in oven” or “reheat on stove”) – but for the turkey and timing itself, I’m a bit stumped…
esp as I’ll be more fatigued than on a normal Thanksgiving!
All tips welcome
Anne Shirley
Who is “we?” everyone attending? Is there anyone not running who can stay behind and cook?
Running on Thanksgiving
Ah, sorry. SO and I are running. Feasters won’t be arriving until later in the day (whatever time we tell them to show up).
Anne Shirley
I haven’t done running and hosting, but I have done into the city to see the parade and then home to host. For the turkey, I roasted a day early and reheated. Yeah, it was drier than I’d like, but my family are gravy eaters anyway. Set the table the week before Then I had a detailed chart of everything that needed to get done sides wise, including which pot, pan, and serving dish it needed. It was exhausting and not terribly fun for me, but it got done.
Anon
Can you do a smoked turkey? Smoked turkeys are the best! We order them from our favorite BBQ restaurant (Blackstrap BBQ for anyone in the Boston area). The flavor blows regular roast turkeys out the water AND there’s no prep work to be done.
Otherwise, I would do what you’ve suggested and prep everything you can in the days before and ask your guests to bring any dishes that you need to fill in gaps.

Fry your turkey. Incredibly juicy and flavorful and takes only an hour including prep.

trust a friend or family member to be in charge of the cooking and transporting of the turkey? I envision that you bring over bird ready to go in foil (or roasting pan) tray and give instructions. have your friend/family follow and bring bird to main event post-race.
this would also free up your oven for re-heating or heating. also, I’d suggest all/most sides that can be made ahead of time. which would benefit from having an oven cook/warm.
LizNYC
If you don’t mind just having breast meat, you could just do a turkey breast or two (or three) and it’ll take less time than a whole turkey. My mom has phased out the whole turkey as it became clear that no one went for the dark meat.
Hel-lo
We also do this for small holiday gatherings. Some people also love the carcass/bones. I hate dealing with that. Sometimes my mom does cornish game hens.
Anon
How many people are you hosting? If you can do a smaller bird plus extra breast or drumsticks, if needed, you will be able to shorten the cooking time considerably. An unstuffed 12-lb bird (which is the smallest I’m usually able to find) only takes 3-4 hours. I actually have to hold myself back from putting it in the oven too early.
MJ
Look into Trader Joe’s frozen mashed potatotes. They are delish, not instant and if you add a smidge of butter, cream or milk, you absolutely cannot tell they are not homemade.
Can you put the turkey in and have a turkey babysitter at your place while you run? That’s what I’d do. Easy-peasy!
Also, consider doing a potluck–my family regularly has folks bring side dishes–you could easily do that.
And consider outsourcing pies to somewhere yummy, or do the pies in advance.
Good luck with your run!
ArenKay
Brine your turkey overnight — it needs less time to roast, and then you can roast T’giving afternoon.
Smoke Out?
My husband and I are looking to buy a home and recently saw one with potential. However, the current owner is a smoker and the house absolutely reeks of smoke. We would need to do a substantial amount of renovations, not gut to the studs, but new kitchen, bathrooms, and flooring for sure; probably not taking down any walls or sheetrock. We’ve been in touch with some remediation companies who assure us the smoke smell can be eliminated, but I wanted to check to see if anyone has had any first-hand experience. We are being told that between the professional remediation and the renovations we should be good, but I am still nervous. This is my first home purchase, and I am freaking out about the possibility that at the end of the day, there will still be a smoke smell, we won’t want to live there and no one will want to buy the house. We are not smokers and are pretty sensitive to the smell, plus we have young kids, so this is a big deal to us. TIA.
Pretzel_Logic
Why would you want to buy a house with that many problems? Not trying to be a jerk, just curious. There’s “potential,” and then there’s “fixer-upper,” and this sounds like the latter to me. (My friends almost bought a house this summer with very similar issues and kept showing me pictures of a crappy looking place that apparently had “potential,” but basically needed to be gutted. They walked when the renovation prices kept rising and bought a much cuter place that just needed new paint.)
In my experience smell–smoke, pet, or otherwise–is hard as hell to get rid of, and there’s no way I’d buy a house like this, based only on the stank factor.
Anon
Have you ever bought a house? There’s no such thing as a perfect house that has no problem. Some people would rather buy a fixer-upper because it’s probably cheaper if you can do some of the work yourself and you can pick out exactly what you like.
Bonnie
Most of the smoke smell will go away when the current tenant moves out. Painting the walls and cleaning the floors should get rid of the rest. My mom was a lifelong smoker and we were able to get rid of the smoke smell quite easily.
anon2
Just faced this issue this past summer when house shopping. 1911 built house, smokers had not lived there for 20 years, carpet had been replaced but you could still smell it. We were told we would need – at minimum – to take down all wallpaper, replace ceilings, replace the less than 10 year old carpet (most of the home was hardwood) and any other “soft” surface because this is a very hard thing to remediate. We decided not to risk it, given the considerable expense and uncertain outcome. YMMV, but I’d keep looking.
lia
I moved into an apartment previously occupied for five years by heavy smokers. Hardwood floors though out. Two coats of paint did it no problem at all but the landlord had to paint the closets, ceilings and walls. I was amazed how effective the paint was at removing the smell.
Senior Attorney
When I bought my house some years ago, the previous owners had been smoking in it for years. I painted all the walls and ceilings and refinished the hardwood floors and that got rid of all the smell.
R
I know I”m replying late, but on the off chance you’re still reading…
Our neighbors bought a house in which the previous owners had smoked for 40 years. They replaced all soft surfaces and repainted walls and ceiling (including the attached garage), and even replaced drywall/insulation in a few rooms. The new owners swear the smell is gone, but whenever we go over, we still smell it. My husband and I are never around smokers and are sensitive to the smell, so maybe that leads to the difference. But set-in smoke is hard to get rid of, and if you’re at all sensitive, you may need to completely gut the whole house to get rid of the smell completely.
I would think long and hard about it, esp if young children will be involved.
SoCalAtty
I’ll second R’s experience. You’re likely going to have to replace all “soft” surfaces, and if you don’t replace the drywall, I would recommend painting over that with Killz or a similar product.
A good remediation company will be able to get rid of the smell, but it is more than just surfaces. Think duct work, the insulation in your attic, in your walls…those have all absorbed the smoke smell.
Nutshell
I’m posting super late, but wanted to answer your question anyway. I have a relative in construction who has had experience in this with different houses/buildings. When there has been a fire, it is basically a full remodel or the smell (and structural) issues can remain. The biggest problem with a smoker’s house is the paint – it really gets absorbed into the walls (and discolors the paint). It is VERY difficult to get the smell out without a full gutting for many properties. I don’t think I would take the risk, since I’m very sensitive to the smell, and especially not with children.
In House Lobbyist
I agree that’s it is very hard to get out smoke. We bought a rental house that had been smoked in for 20 years and it took forever to get it out. We removed the wallpaper and refinished the plaster walls. We tried reprinting the ceilings with Kilz but it took about 5 coats. We should have just refinished the ceilings from the beginning. All trim had to be redone and the hardwoods were redone or replaced. Any carpet would have to go. We have done several rental properties and we agreed to never do another smokers house again.
I am a banana.
Feet threadjack:
How do you stave off bunions? What works, other than buying shoes that fit (this has become a huge priority already) and avoiding heels as much as possible? I bought those round bunion cushion things and am wearing them today (I cut them in half though, otherwise they show). Help!
Sue
I’d say wearing shoes that fit and possibly avoiding those with pointed toes. I read that the latter can make it worse. If you still want to wear heels maybe restrict it to times when you don’t have to be on your feet for long and avoid very high heels. You could also consider seeing a podiatrist, they might be able to give you more recommendations.
Batgirl
I had surgery on mine (at 30) so I would encourage you to do whatever you can (but also, surgery is a pain in the neck but better than severe foot pain–whenever the time comes, that is).
Don’t wear heels unless you absolutely have to–any heels more than one inch. I know some womenwould rather die, but I’d rather choose lifelong mobility. I wear heels for weddings and important work events, but otherwise don’t wear heels at all anymore.
Also, I didn’t know this until too late, but get thee some custom made orthotics from a podiatrist and wear them religiously–makes a huge difference! They’re pricey ($400+) but last for years.

About 15 years ago in high school I was bullied horrendously online by 3 of my (then) best friends. People didn’t really understand online bullying and the school was absolutely miserable in their response. I’ve been watching the Dolphins/Jonathan Martin case with some extra interest and it pisses me off to no end that in 15 years nothing has changed and it’s still common to hear statements like “You wouldn’t be friends with your bully, so clearly he wasn’t a bully and it was all a joke and you really do need to man up.” Or that, if the reports are true, threats to a family member are ok.
It took me a long time and lots of therapy, but I was able to successfully deal with the bullying and I’m ok. I know there are a lot of people out there who are dealing with something like this and need some help. I’m looking for an organization in Southern California (OC preferably, LA or San Diego possibly) or something I can do online to help combat bullying. Stuffing envelopes is fine, but so is something more substantive. I put myself on the volunteer mailing list for it gets better legal and found one place in LA, but I really want to do something. I feel like I have to.

I need some cover letter help for a friend.
She wants to move from London to a major American city, mainly to be with a guy. Although it is a major American city, it’s not huge in the international scale, and I worry that because she has no other connection to this city, it will hurt her chances. It is also not a big city for what she wants to do, but it is for a go0gl3 position, so at least the company shouldn’t be afraid of the London connection.
Do you think she should mention her motive for moving (him) in her cover letter? They are not engaged, but I can’t help but wonder that an HR person will read it and think, why on earth this city?? Part of me thinks it will come off as silly and unprofessional. The other part of me thinks it is honest, a bit endearing, and explains her connection to the city- in other words, that she isn’t just sending the applications to every random city and hoping she gets a job.
Any thoughts from those in HR or regularly read resumes? Or any insight into getting a job with the great go0gl3 machine?
Mpls
This would be a great question for Ask A Manager.
My 2 cents – I think it’s fair to include that she is considering/planning a move to New City for personal reasons and excited to find job blah blah blah. I would NOT go so far as to say that she is moving to New City because of Guy. The latter is unprofessional and doesn’t have anything to do with her qualifications for the job.
Anon
Hmm, I disagree. If they were married/getting married, she wouldn’t hesitate to mention that she was moving to be with her husband/husband to be. As someone who routinely reviews resumes and cover letters (attorney hiring director in big law), I think the reason, albeit personal, needs to be mentioned. Otherwise she appears to have no connection to the new city.

Agreed. When I moved across the country for my husband, one of the things I mentioned pretty prominently in interviews was the fact that I was married. It helped give employers a sense that I had some connections/ties to the area and that I wasn’t just applying for jobs in a place where I had no connections for some random reason.

Totally unrelated, but I love your tumblr.

Thanks! My favorite thing about that tumblr is the fact that I am always staring intently into the phone. I fail at selfies.

I always advise friends in this situation to say in up-front in the cover letter “I am moving to [X City] for personal reasons, and seeking a job [doing X].” This makes clear that you have a commitment to the city, are really moving there, and no employer is every going to actually inquire into those personal reasons for legal reasons. They will assume she’s married/engaged, whatever, and that’s fine.

I don’t see any problem saying, “for family reasons.” No one has to know they aren’t engaged (if that’s true). Employers are looking to find out if she’s committed to the area.

Proper Attire Needed
I am anticipating a funeral in my near future. A close relative is not doing well. Nothing in my closet looks appropriate for the occasion. I don’t know exactly what it is I’m looking for. Everything in my closet either looks like I should be at work or at the beach. I’d greatly appreciate ideas. Ideally, I could keep it under $250.
I’m in California, so the weather’s still in the 60s/70s. Family is conservative so something with sleeves would be appreciated. And, if it’s something that I can wear again in the future without looking like I should be going to a funeral is a bonus.

You could wear a simple dress like this http://m.whitehouseblackmarket.com/store/browse/product.jsp?maxRec=50&pageId=1&productId=570091080&viewAll=true&prd=Matte+Jersey+Faux+Wrap+Dress&subCatId=&color=001&fromSearch=true&inSeam=&posId=32&catId=cat210002&cat=&onSale=&colorFamily=&maxPg=1&size=
Add more colorful accessories for work.

No suggestions, but I would just comment that you may want to spend less and just plan to wear the dress only for the funeral. In my experience, I have never enjoyed re-wearing clothing I have worn to a funeral.

I think a work-appropriate outfit in jewel tones or darker colors is fine. I was at a funeral last week and barely anyone was in black. (Keep in mind that a non-religious “celebration of life” will be more casual than a Catholic mass.)

This. A dark suit is fine even. Funerals are a mixed bag clothing-wise anyways. I’ve seen everything from suits to khakis at the same funeral.

i am looking for a new concealer – any recommendations for a drugstore brand? freida pinto complexion.
Nutshell
I like the Maybelline Coverstick Concealer – no idea on their other shades, other than the fact that I wish more stores carried the lightest shade they make (because even that is darker than my skin, so using the next one up requires a bit more blending). I’ve been using it for years. Anytime I try another one (I’ve tried a bunch of different liquid ones, too, but I find they stand out on my skin as darker than me and make my skin look drier), I just think that they don’t compare.
