Does anyone have any recommendations of things to do in the Asheville, NC area? I have about 7 hours to kill during the day there on Saturday. Can travel up to an hour outside of the city too.
Are you an outdoor person? Chimney Rock has beautiful hikes, especially this time of year. The Grove Park Inn has a fabulous spa, if that’s your fancy. And of course there’s the Biltmore and the Winery at the Biltmore. Downtown Asheville has fun shopping. I like the shops in the old Woolworth’s. It’s artists/artisans and some of it is really fun.
The spa at Grove Park Inn. It’s one of the best I’ve been to and worth every penny.
Asheville has many, many breweries (apparently more per capita than any other U.S. city!), all of which come highly recommended by my friends who live there. I happen to like Highland and Wicked Weed, but have also heard good things about Lexington Avenue Brewery (LAB). For food, Posana Cafe and Tupelo Honey are both delicious, but I would encourage reservations or you might use up your entire 7 hours waiting for a table! Asheville’s official website is really comprehensive: http://www.exploreasheville.com/foodtopia/beer-breweries/
I just ate at Tupelo Honey, and it is indeed amazing!
Several years later, I still remember fondly my meal of shrimp and grits at Tupelo Honey. It was amazing.
I would recommend a good brunch then a short hike followed by dinner at Tupelo Honey and then wander the streets window-shopping and stop in somewhere to have a glass of wine.
Tupelo Honey Shrimp and Grits, soooo good! I agree with that and also the Grove Park Inn and Biltmore comments! Asheville is a fun place to explore.
If you’re a J.Crew superfan, they have a distribution store in Arden, NC which isn’t too far from the city (not to be confused with J.Crew Factory which is what’s at most outlet malls). It can be hit or miss but I have scored major deals there on work clothes.
Asheville is so pretty!
You can visit the Biltmore Estate. It’s a steep admission price, but that’s because they aren’t subsidized. It’s got an indoor swimming pool and a bowling alley in the basement! Plus, the grounds are extensive and I believe they allow picnics.
+1!
Knew I could count on you all – this sounds great. Thanks!
My brother got married at the Biltmore, right around this time of year. The grounds will be absolutely stunning! You can get an AAA rate to get in too, which pulls the price down a smidge. As to the winery, all of the East Coasters at the wedding really liked it, because it showed how to make wine, and you don’t get that so often on the East Coast. That said, being from CA, honestly…the wine was not that good. If you have limited time, I would tour the Biltmore house itself (the mansion), perhaps stop at the hotel and look out over the grounds from their lovely bar, and then spend the rest of your day in Asheville itself–it’s a great town. Enjoy!

Does anyone have any suggestions for a pair of dressy black flats? I’m thinking a pointed or almond toe.
I want to wear them with business casual outfits, especially with pencil skirts and sheath dresses.
I posted a few on this other comment thread a few weeks ago. You can search for my name to find them. A couple of the ones I found had pointy toes and looked like a flat version of a pump.

I live in these (I have them in multiple colors) –

I was going to suggest Ivanka Trump as well. I have the Angeline in black but I don’t think they’re available anymore.
I saw these at Macy’s and they’re really pretty as well: http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/ivanka-trump-collie-flats?ID=961649&CategoryID=55748#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D26%26ruleId%3D52%26slotId%3D10%26kws%3Divanka%20trump%20womens%20shoes
Depending on your budget, I love my Ferragamo Audrey flats (http://www.berenshoes.com/Salvatore-Ferragamo-Audrey-Maryjane-Black-Nappa/p/FA0777_BLK_NP/)
I was lucky enough to get them at huge discount from Yoox, but I would pay more for them now that I’ve had them (maybe full price less a F&F sale). The only caution is I needed to resole them pretty quickly, since I was wearing them so often, because the leather sole didn’t last long.
I bought a pair of pointed toe flats from White House Black Market (city flats?) this summer. They’re pretty comfortable, they have a nicely padded sole. Haven’t worn them a lot, so I’m not sure how they’ll hold up long term, but they seem to be of decent quality.
I just got these. Bought them during a F&F sale. They are very, very comfortable.

I’m the poster who wrote in last(?) week about scheduling my first therapy appointment and just needed a pat on the back. I had it today a few hours ago and I already feel better. She was able to outline a preliminary treatment plan and a course of action (perfect for the planner in me), plus just telling someone what’s going on was very helpful.
Thanks to everyone who encouraged and offered suggestions for what to do the first time around. Here’s hoping I start feeling (more permanently) better soon.
Kudos to you!
Yes, me too. I agree it is GREAT that you went to thereapy! DOUBEL KUDO’s to you. I spoke to my mom about the pantie’s and she suspects the releatives. Evidentley, many year’s ago dad went with her to Budapest and they stayed with the relative’s and when they were headeing out, Dad could NOT find mom’s duffel bag, which had alot of dirty clotheing. Everyone started lookeing around, and hour’s later, it turned up, but w/o alot of dad’s clotheing and mom’s stuff that was in the duffel bag. Mom think’s that they liked their clotheing so much they took it, but that was year’s ago, and I went with Igor and Oleg to H&M, Lord and Taylor’s and Macy’s and also Sak’s Fifth Avenue, so they sureley did NOT need to take my laundry to bring home to their relative’s or girlfreind’s. It was not even new OR clean for that matter. FOOEY! b/c now I am goeing to have to go out to Macy’s and spend mabye $50 on some replacement clotheing and the manageing partner will NOT reimburese me for any clotheing that he can NOT see. That include’s pantie’s, bra’s and stockeing’s. DOUBEL FOOEY! And mom want’s to tell dad about it because it is HIS side of the family, and mom is fed up with Grandma Leyeh saying his side of the family is desended from ROYALTY. Tripel FOOEY b/c I do NOT want to create an interneational incident. What about the hive? Has anyone ever had their releative’s take any of their clotheing, or is this just happeneing to me? OMG, what a NIGHTMARE! FOOEY!
Sounds like a wonderful start, good for you for taking the first steps.
Hope it keeps going well!
I can’t really tell anyone else this news, but I got a 20% raise at work today! I’m so happy I want to make ELLEN CAPS all over the place!
As ELLEN herself would say, YAY!!!
(And then probably add something about how she wants to get married so she doesn’t have to work anymore).
20% raise??? That’s amazeballs. Congrats.
Congrats!
20% raise is awesome! Congratulations!!! What are you going to do to celebrate? :)
Just went to the bathroom and realized that I had an unexpected per*od event and have apparently been walking through my client’s office with a stain on the back of my (light grey) skirt… and have several more meetings to go to which I am currently planning on wearing my peacoat to. I’m torn between whether this is completely mortifying or if I’m going to laugh about it in a few years.
Both, likely. Hugs!
Oh no! Hopefully you will laugh about it. I had that happen once (no stain on dress but completely ruined my underwear) and I threw away my underwear in the bathroom. Maybe no one noticed it? Usually someone will say something (privately, of course).
Ooooohhhhh, that’s happened to me. Multiple times. Thankfully I was wearing dark clothes but I’ve definitely stained chairs in various offices. THANKS A LOT BIOLOGY, RAWR!
That definitely sucks.I know I’d be bothered by it. Try not to dwell on it too much. Hopefully no one noticed.
I don’t know if this might be helpful but I have been using an app called Period Tracker. It helps reduce the chances of getting surprised by an event. It also doubles as a fertility tracker albeit a very approximate one. And best of all it’s free!
I usually roll my eyes when I hear about ridiculous return requests, and in no way find myself a particular stickler for quality, but here I go with my own marginal question of “Can I return this to Nordstoms?”
I bought several higher-end-but-still-everyday type of br@s from Nordstrom about six weeks ago and all of the lace/mesh panels on the sides are really ripped up. I treated them as I typically due my br@s – machine wash cold, lay flat to dry. I am not exceptionally gentle on my things and wouldn’t have been annoyed if they had started to get a couple of small tears after the first 6 months but these are seriously in tatters. I actually had to throw one away this morning because it was so far gone. For comparison, I also bought some of my standard CK bras with lace sides that same day that still look brand new so I don’t think my laundering process is to blame.
Should I just chalk this up as a $90 lesson that this is not a good brand for me or can I return?
Yeah, they’ll take it back, especially since it’s been only 6 weeks.
I toss my bras in a cold water wash AND I stick them in the dryer. Except in a lingerie bag. Totally worth the extra step.
+1 on the lingerie bag. It’s the hooks catching on the lace that usually does them in. Having them hooked closed and in a bag usually keeps it all safe. Of course, I hang them, too. I hate bra shopping , so a little TLC is worth avoiding the aggravation later to me. They’re so darned expensive, too. I would definitely return since it’s only been six weeks. (I’m usually anti-return, too. But six weeks is nothing.)
Thanks. I think I need to invest in one. Where can I get one? Would Target sell this?
Yep. Lots of stores sell them.
I just bought a bra lingerie bag at Target, it was Tide brand. Shaped like a large hockey puck and fits two bras. I want to say it was $4 or so?
Awesome. Thank you all for both the laundry advice and assuaging my returner’s guilt.
Omg. Why have I never thought of washing them hooked closed? I feel like this will be life changing!!!!! Thank you! :)
Return them. I think they will also want to know that this is not a great brand to have if the quality is this bad.
Six weeks is not long at all.
I disagree. Lace bras are not meant to be thrown in the washing machine (without a lingerie bag). They’re probably ripped up because the hooks caught on the lace. This does not seem like an indication of bad quality but bad maintenance.
Agree. The laundry instructions on more expensive bras are typically handwash and lay flat to dry. I don’t think you should return them if you failed to care for them properly. I never machine wash bras no matter the price.
I wash my bras in the washing machine on delicate cycle/cold water, then hang dry. When I wash a bunch of them at once, I don’t use lingerie bags, but I have never seen a tear from the hooks even though they do tangle. My bras are middle of the road, CK/Felina price point.
My guess in the OP’s case is either use of regular wash cycle, or poor quality – especially if all the items are the same brand and model.
I want well-made dresses for work (sheaths, A-line, etc). Any recommendations for a dressmaker on Etsy (or another site)? Or another source for professional clothing without any sweatshop labor? I want to look good, but I don’t want to support inhumane working conditions.
MM LaFleur?
I had never heard of MM LaFleur. Beautiful clothing!
Lots of clothing brands are made in the USA (I know there are sweatshops here too, but it is more possible that the brand is following US labor laws). I just typed “made in the USA” in the nordstrom search bar and got hundreds of results for example. Enjoy!
A very simple solution. I’m going to try Etsy suggestions first to support smaller business, but these other brands are excellent suggestions.
A couple of other commenters here in the past have mentioned heartmycloset on Etsy for custom dresses. I am planning to try them (well, after I lose 15 pounds, which is also in the planning stage).

yystudio on Etsy is one of my favorites.
I just came back from a consultation for laser vision correction and found out my corneas are too think for LASIK and my right eye is really borderline for PRK, so I’m kind of stuck with glasses and contacts forever. I’m really bummed out about this and people in my real life won’t really care, I just needed to get this out there.
awe that sucks. But think about all the fun fashion statements you can make with glasses? maybe you should buy yourself a new funky pair now
Yeah – there are people out there wearing glasses that don’t even NEED them, because they think it’s cool.
But I get it – it sucks to be dependent on a piece of tech (even as low tech as a special shaped piece of glass/plastic) to just go about your daily life.
I have to admit, I was kind of sad at the prospect of giving up my big hipster glasses.
I will also admit that I kind of miss wearing glasses (had LASIK around 10 years ago). And I’m getting the point, where I don’t usually need them, but do have a pair of cheaters to help with prolonged computer screen time or small print.
I had the opposite problem, my corneas are too thin. I understand the disappointment. I was so exited about the prospect of being able to wake up in the morning and see across the room without fumbling for my glasses (my vision is so bad that even if they got me to anything close to 20/20 I would have made a huge difference). I was, however, grateful that the doctor was upfront about why I was not a good candidate rather than going ahead with the procedure and potentially causing irreparable damage. So boo – I still have to wear glasses/contacts all.the.time but, yea – I can still see!
Sorry to hear this. If it makes you feel better, I shelled out the money and had LASIK done about nine years ago, had 20/20 for a few years and am now back to a -2.5 prescription glasses, which I’m pretty sure will be strengthened, again, at my next visit. :/
Oh that’s really interesting. I had no idea that could be the case. I have a consultation with a specialist in a couple of weeks because I want to explore surgical options. I have no expectation that my eyes could be corrected completely – I just would like to get to the point of being able to buy glasses/lenses like a normal person and not spend $650 for just my lenses. I guess I’ll just see what he has to say.
I had Lasik 10 years ago and I wear glasses again. (I’m only 37, so it’s not because of age, or so says my eye doctor). I know when I had mine done 10 years ago, it was pretty new tech, and they were saying they didn’t *really* have any long term idea of how it would do.
Folks whose corneas were too thin before are now eligible, so it’s possible the technology will advance so that you can get it later. I’m hoping they also get cheaper so I can afford it eventually…
The same thing happened to me. I was really disappointed. Like you, people in my real life didn’t really care. I’m actually getting second opinion from another doctor. I understand the answer will likely be the same, but it’s worth a shot and the second doctor is much more reputable.
Some people who aren’t eligible for LASIK are candidates for ICL (implantable lenses).
I am torn about whether to get lasik someday…I dislike being nearly blind, but I do kind of love fashion statement eyewear.
Yes, I recently read an article about ICL. (I was bored in the eye doctor’s office.) Sounds like a viable alternative for people who aren’t good candidates for LASIK, although I’m not sure what the downsides are (if any).
I had PRK earlier this year. It was a horrible horrible experience. Somehow the doctor glossed over the fact that my eye would feel like I had a handful of sand in it 24 hours a day for weeks, and I’d be unable to focus the eye for 2-4 WEEKS after the surgery. Also, I had to space each eye out by three months. The second eye was a cakewalk compared to the first. So…there’s that.
You saved yourself potential excruciating, not-advertised pain by not being a candidate. Please note that LASIK is not like this…only PRK due to the ablation of the surface of the eye (PRK) vs. flap (LASIK). I truly wish someone had told me that PRK can be a very painful and slow healing process…my doctor told me that this was normal, after I was so maimed that I could barely work. It was AWFUL. If anyone wants to talk PRK, just post with questions on another thread.
Actually, I had excruciating pain after lasik. The procedure itself was merely uncomfortable, it was after. Only for a few days, thank god, and it was only about 24-48 hours till I could see.
My doctor told me this happens to about 1% of patients.
My sister had PRK and she was in horrible pain. It’s great that she can see now (and sometimes I forget that she isn’t wearing any contacts) but she warns everyone that it’s an extremely painful recovery.
I had super seriously bad vision (my glasses were a -13, so too bad for LASIK) and got ICL about ten months ago. Best $5k I ever spent.
That’s where I am right now (-12 or -13). I’m looking forward to hearing about my options.
Have you considered orthokeratology? Basically contacts you wear at night to reshape the eye and during the day you don’t need contacts or glasses.
This is the best post Kat has made all year, claws down.
+1
All – I know it’s been discussed on here before, but I’m thinking I may want to find someone to talk to myself about dealing with my clinically depressed husband. Any suggestions for how I go about finding an appropriate counselor? I really just want someone to unload on, as my husband keeps his illness close to his chest and I’m hesitant to talk to either my family or most of my friends about it. And I suppose there’s a part of me that’s afraid of him pulling me down with him, so I want to get out in front of it. I’ve never had a specific diagnosis myself, but I did see someone for awhile in college for my own depressive issues (just through the student health program). We have a baby, and I know that between working full time, post-partum hormones, his issues and my own pre-disposition, I’m at risk of a downward spiral myself. Any suggestions?
Would he be more open to a family therapy session? So he doesn’t feel singled out?
I’ve not discussed with him yet that I feel like I need to see someone. Honestly, I’m afraid that it will only hurt him if he feels his issues are hurting me.
Sometimes that is the only way to convince the depressed person that they need to do something about their depression. Obviously I would not suggest intentionally hurting him, but when I have been down in the past, I don’t do much/anything about it until DH says, “hey I’m concerned about you and btw your sadness is starting to rub off on me” — we’re both a little predisposed to depression so we have to check each other, and it’s really helpful.
He’s your husband, not your child. You can treat him as your partner, as someone who should be supporting you.
As far as finding a counselor, you can call your health insurance company and ask for a few names. You can specify gender, hours, location, etc. when you call. You can probably do this online too but I always have problems with my health insurance’s website.
Thanks. He’s actually seeing someone himself already and has a scrip from his PCP. He knows he’s having problems at the moment (which actually is making it worse — he was better, at least to live with sadly, when he was hiding it. Now that it’s out in the open between us, it’s like he feels he’s justified in acting out towards me. That’s honestly what is sparking my need to see someone on my own).
I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. I don’t think you need to throw it in his face (which doesn’t sound like your plan anyway), but I think you’re well within your rights to schedule yourself an appointment, and then matter-of-factly tell him “hey honey, going to be late coming home on Thursday because I’m meeting with a therapist.” If he asks why, something to the effect of “it’ll help me to support you better” should suffice (it’s true, but not as confrontational as “because your illness is causing you to be kind of a sh*t right now, and its affecting me” – there’ll likely be a time and place for that conversation, but I wouldn’t initiate it without a therapist of my own in place to help me navigate it).
Part of being with a depressed partner is learning not to take responsibility for the other person’s feelings – you’re not “hurting” him by taking care of yourself, no matter what he thinks. Don’t let his defensiveness about his own illness stop you from seeking out the support you need. And as for how to find it, definitely start with your employer’s EAP if you have one – if you don’t, you can Google the name of your town + therapist + relationships/depression, and you’ll probably get some results, which you can then vet to make sure that they’re (a) covered by your insurance; and (b) well-credentialed (look up their schooling, make sure their license with the state is current, etc. – again, this can generally be done through Googling). Don’t be afraid to set up consultations with more than one person to see who you “click” with best.
I’m sorry, hugs. But good for you for taking this step. A few ideas: #1 – go to your insurers’ website and see if you can locate a doctor. #2 – if your employer has an employee assistance program (EAP), that could potentially be a good resource as well. #3 – call your ob/gyn or your kid’s pediatrician and ask for a recommendation.
You can often use those resources to identify someone based on certain criteria (male/female, distance from a zipcode, etc.). Once you have a few names, you can run some google searches to try to narrow it down even further.
Call your EAP – you can usually get three or so sessions and then that person could refer you to someone for more long-term.
I am all for going to see someone on your own. My Ex is clinically depressed and it was the downfall of our relationship – everything was always about him, him, him – even when we went to couple counseling, it ended up always being about him. I should have started seeing someone on my own, but too late for us now. good for you for realizing you need to do this.
All the best to you, I’ve been there. the guilt is crushing.
hugs!
*hugs so much*
My husband has serious anxiety, and I just made an appointment to see a therapist myself after realizing how depressed and stressed I am getting. I used goodtherapy.org (lets you search by zip code and therapeutic philosophy) and my employer’s EAP to find some names.
Note on the EAP – I found that the counselor was very focused on the immediate problem at hand (husband’s behavior right now). So he was great about recommending communication styles to have conversations with my husband about the current behavior, but didn’t get into the trust issues we have as a result of my husband’s ups and downs. He did provide several names of therapists that accept my insurance for the longer-term issues.
Have you considered a temporary separation? I moved into our guest bedroom so I can be sad, messy, write in my journal, talk on the phone, etc without worrying that it will upset my husband. I know he felt guilty “forcing” me out of the bedroom, but it’s been good for my mental health to have a little “me” space.
Goodtherapy will also let you find a family or couples counselor, which is really valuable – I discovered in couples therapy that my husband had been lying to his therapist and his prescribing physician, so he wasn’t making any progress. Before that, I had no idea that he wasn’t managing his self-care and now I know that I need to enforce boundaries and hold him accountable, or else I’m just enabling him to be out of control.
Good luck. Please do take care of yourself.
Can anyone comment on the sizing of the popular Land’s End sleeveless ponte sheath dress? I usually wear a small or an XS in tops there (and a small or medium in most other brands) and haven’t yet ordered pants, a skirt, or a dress for comparison. I’m 5’4″ and usually wear a 6-8 on the bottom in most brands. I also have large hips and a big butt – will this dress even work for me? Thank you ladies!
I think it’s tts. I’m 5’8″ and wear an 8 usually I also wear an 8 in the dress.
Any advice for how to make brown rice a little more tasty? I cook it in chicken broth with garlic, but it’s still pretty bland. Any suggestions? (DH bought the most enormous bag of brown rice so I have a while to figure this out…)
Have you ever made Mexican rice? I boil it in chicken broth, saute some onions, spices, and tomatoes, and mix it all together. There are a ton of recipes online for it.
You also can’t go wrong with some butter, salt, and pepper.
One of my old roommates used to put sweet chili & sriracha sauce on her rice.
I was going to suggest sriracha, or mix in kimchi.
I love kimchi fried rice – my number 2 comfort food, after pho.
I make the rice itself plain (just with water in my rice cooker) but put stuff on top – usually stirfry with some combo of veggies, mushrooms, chicken, and/or tofu.
When I make brown rice — which I CANNOT STAND plain — I add to the pot:
– a healthy few shakes of tumeric
– a small scoop of coconut oil
– a cube of bullion
– a finely diced carrot
I bring it to dinner parties and people go nuts for it. The yellow tumeric and orange carrot make it look super pretty; the coconut oil and bullion disguise the brown ricey-ness. It goes particularly well with fish, I’ve found.
I make the Lundberg wild rice blend, cook it in chicken broth, then when I eat it I add a dab of butter and a shake of salt. It is seriously delicious. If I put in more than a dab of butter right off the stove it’s almost too rich to eat. I’ll frequently just have a bowl of it as a meal (which probably says more about my standards for a meal than anything else). Plus, wild rice is even better for you than brown rice.
Oh, I just saw that you have an enormous bag of brown rice, sorry! I usually just drown it in soy sauce when I make plain brown rice. Although if I had a big bag to play around with I might experiement and see how close to a risotto I could get it…
Check out “brown rice and lentil soup” on the epicurious website. Bizarrely good for such a simple soup, cheap, healthy, and freezes well.
Cheddar cheese and broccoli!
Any suggestions for DC area wineries for a day trip?
Don’t know if you will see this, but I love Sharp Rock. Near Sperrysville and Old Rag (a fantastic hike). Start there and then see what other wineries in the area they recommend…

I suggest Loudoun Valley – close to DC, pretty scenery, and many wineries, including the famous Tarara. Just make sure you visit the outlets before, not after the wine tastings!

There are so many in Loudon County, VA. I enjoy sitting outside, so I frequent Sunset Hills which has a great outdoor seating area and good food choices to go along with the wine. Within about 15 minutes of Sunset Hills there are about 10 more wineries – Breaux, Hillsborough, 868, Loudon Valley, Notaviva.
Chrysalis in Middleburg is also really nice.
Just an fyi (though most of you probably know) that Ann Taylor is having 60% off sale items (FLASH60 but it is listed on the website as well) and 25% off full price items through tonight. There is some great stuff there, especially peplum.
Bolivar turned on the external speaker and phoned. “Uncle Tom here. We are all so worried.”
“Neither has anyone else. James created it and planted it in the government memory banks. There are so many kinds of police on Fetorr that one more won’t be noticed. How do we get together?”
