I was going to write a whole thing about how yes, it is obvious that I am obsessed with the cobalt version of this watch. But you know what? For once I am MORE obsessed with this “rose smoke” color, which reminds me of a watch that Audrey Hepburn wore in How to Steal a Million — I hunted for something similar for years without success. And while I am sure hers was leather and this is silicone, this one is also a mere $45, so there's that. The watch is available in a number of colors — fuchsia! violet! white! black! — and there exists another version of the watch face (sold separately) that looks like a big gemstone. What fun! And the best part: all of the watches are only $45, all at Shopbop. RumbaTime Orchard Enamel Watch (L-all)Sales of note for 9.16.24

Flip flops
Has anyone tried Tkees flip flops? I just heard about them today and am intrigued. Are they worth $50 (more than I would usually pay for flip flops)? Will they last more than one summer?
Ellen
Yes, while I have not, Rosa has, and she bought them at NORDSROM’S in White Plains! She love’s them and more importantly for the HIVE, they will be on sale starting July 10 at their anniversary sale! YAY!!!!

Mabye I will get a pair for the HAMTONS! Right now, I have cheep flip flops that I use from CVS, but I should upgrade. The manageing partner’s brother told me that his wife spend HUNDRED’s of dollars on shoe’s every month! Even I do NOT do that I told him, so he said I would be an improvement over her.
I was not sure how to take that so I just said that I was VERY FRUEGEL. He laughed b/c he wondered why he saw me weareing all of Margie’s clotheing all weekend!
The manageing partner’s brother is beginning to grow on me a littel, but I do NOT think I can marry him b/c he is so much older then I am. I wonder how much of an age diference is OK. Has Kat or anyone else in the HIVE taken a survey on this? When a man is virile NOW, what are women suposed to do 20 year’s down the road when we still have a sex drive and they are 82, especialy if we do NOT have to worry about becomeing pregenent? Kat, can you do a survey for us?
Anonymous
Yes, I currently have 6 pairs and I LOVE them. I don’t think they would last more then one summer. I switch mine out every 3 months or so. But I live in Florida.

So . . . work advice needed. I just was in a partner’s office. We have been working on a motion and brief with another partner. I was told they liked what I drafted, but then recently we’ve had a string of revisions and working to get it in line with the local rules, etc. So it’s gotten a little messier.
Anyway, while I’m in the partner’s office, she’s on the phone (on the handheld) with the other partner. She tells the other partner I’m in her office helping her. Then I see an email pop up on her screen saying, “Did she hear that?”
Obviously, I’m freaking out. She said something negative about me, but I am not sure how negative. And this is a really powerful person at the firm. What should I do??? Can I ask what she said?
mascot
You don’t know that she said something about you and you don’t know what was said. It likely is something completely unrelated to you. I’d let it go.
Wildkitten
Agreed. She could’ve said “I wonder if Bill is cheating on me” or “I think my sister is pregnant” or “This client is such a pain!” or “Let’s fire the receptionist” or “I’m concerned I have an STD.”
Anon
Yup. I’m guessing that whatever she said was most likely confidential, and not about you at all.

Love these examples Wildkitten! She probably just used a cuss word.
Wildkitten
JSFAMO. Alternatively, xanax and tequila.
Hildegarde
First, it sounds possible the other partner wasn’t talking about you at all, but made some comment that was inappropriate or confidential, and then became concerned someone else had heard it.
However, even if you’re confident from the context the other partner was talking about you, I think it would sound kind of hysterical to ask the partner whose office you were in what the other partner said. Also inappropriate. I do think this is a great opportunity calmly to ask the partner whose office you were in how your work was received, if there was anything you could have done better, etc. If s/he saw that you saw the computer screen, s/he may figure out that you have an idea of what’s going on. A reasonable person (I realize this may be asking a lot in a law firm) would want to level with you if you’re just calmly seeking feedback on your work.
LH
+1. I really doubt it was about you, and even if it was, its inappropriate to ask what was said. But asking for feedback about your work (once this is all wrapped up) seems reasonable.
anon
Two pieces of advice: 1) If you’re wondering whether it’s a big deal, it’s not huge. If something is majorly wrong, you find out sooner rather than later. 2) Don’t submit briefs to a supervising attorney that are not already in line with the local rules. You should make it a habit to read your local rules at the beginning of a project; it’s part of knowing your audience. Also, sad to say, but you should never look at anyone else’s brief — a colleague’s or an adversary’s — and assume they followed the rules.

This watch is adorable. Its going to be hard not to hit ‘buy’…
Parfait
I really like it too. I just have to remember that I hate wearing watches.
Famouscait
I emailed the gem face one to my hubby as a suggestion for a (6 months early) birthday gift!
I have a different style Rumba watch (slim, rectangular digital face) and I like it a lot.
Wildkitten
Sounds like you should buy it for yourself as a half-birthday present!

Thank you to the person who posted this morning with “Ramadan Mubarak”; you reminded me to ask the Hive–can anyone recommend a nice way to wish my in-laws-to-be a Ramadan Mubarak? (I am not of their faith and want to avoid inadvertent offense.) I’m not sure if email is too impersonal for a high religious holiday but they live in a country where shipping is incredibly difficult. I could probably get a card and small non-valuable object through, however. Thank you in advance and to those of you celebrating–Ramadan Mubarak!
Ru
This is really sweet of you. A phone call or email is plenty – my phone went a little wild with texts from well-wishers. You can absolutely send a Ramadan card (which may say Happy Ramadan, Ramadan Mubarak or Ramadan Kareem).
Depending on shipping times and mail delivery in their country, I’d wait to send a gift/card for Eid, which is after the month of Ramadan is completed. It’s more traditional to send gifts during that time.
Your future in-laws are lucky to be getting such a considerate daughter!

So helpful–thank you so much!
AN
Say “Id Mubarak”.
another one
No that’s after Ramadan is over. You can even send an ecard that says Ramadan Mubarak. I’m sure they’d appreciate it. I think I sent one to my mother using 123greetings but there are a number of sites out there that have them.
edit – why is this in moderation?
houda
That is a very nice thought from you. In Ramadan, picking up the phone and voicing your warm wishes is well within the spirit of this month.
May it bring serenity and blessing.
Ru
Salam Houda!!!!!! Hope all is well with you!
houda
Salam Ru, I’m doing great hamdullah, been through some rough months but seeing the end of the tunnel.
I missed you and your colorful outfit pairings!

A personal phone call is the best. If you live nearby, maybe stop by with some cake pastries ect.

Contacts wearers–how many pairs of glasses do you own? I wear my contacts pretty much every day and have always only had one pair of glasses at a time, even when I was mainly wearing glasses. I’ve pondered if I should get a second pair just as a back up or to keep at work for those days when the contacts are aggravating, but my glasses are so horribly expensive that I can’t decided if it’s worth it (I have really bad eyesight, so I have to get the expensive fancy lenses so they aren’t super thick). Do people have multiple pairs they use as accessories, or mainly stick with one pair?
Anon in NYC
I have two for this exact reason.
Maddie Ross
I have one pair that I wear nightly (after removing my contacts before bed) or on the very (very!) rare occasion I don’t wear my contacts. I do however hold on to my older pairs and keep one pair at work and one in my car (in my gym bag actually) for emergency back up. My prescription has only changed the slightest bit in the last 10 years or so, and I’ve owned 2-3 pairs of glasses during that time. While the older ones are not a style I’d really love to be seen in necessarily, they work in a pinch.
Cat
Same – I keep my third-oldest pair at work as my “emergency contact rebellion” glasses, use my second-oldest pair as “yay sweatpants time at home” glasses, and use my current pair as my “I’m just plain wearing glasses today” pair.
Jennifer
Same, but I’m a glasses wearer. I get a new pair every year which is usually the same prescription, and a few years ago I got a cheap extra set for light outdoorsy stuff, housework, etc. to keep my other pairs from getting damaged.
PSA: my eye doctor told me you should not have reusable contacts if you wear them with several days in between, something about bacteria if they just sit in the lens case? Anyway, dailies were an amazing switch for me!
McGiggles
I have five pairs of glasses. Warby Parker changed my life.
anon
how are they with really strong prescriptions?
McGiggles
I think I am on the edge of what they can handle. It’s only $30 more. I am -8.50 in contacts and I have astigmatism. They have great customer service though. It’s worth asking them if the frames you like can handle your prescription / if they can handle it generally.
anon
oh thanks! i’m at the same Rx you are – been curious about WP and just assumed it would be a non-starter. appreciate the info!
Lyssa
I have one pair, and almost never touch them. My vision is really bad, too, and I just find the difference between glasses and contacts too stark (the lenses too thick) to really function with the glasses. I sometimes think that I should try to get a new pair that might actually be usable, but, like you said, they’re so expensive, and I find it hard to imagine finding a pair that I could actually wear.
Wildkitten
I got a really cute pair from Warby Parker and I still don’t wear them. I my contact-default is too strong.
lucy stone
I think I have four pairs. There’s two that I wear regularly, I’ll switch between them when I’m at home. I also have a backup pair in my car that’s not exactly the right prescription but close enough that I’d be okay if I lost a contact. I keep a backup pair in my desk for the same reason. I also have prescription sunglasses.
hoola hoopa
Same situation, down to the expensive lenses. I only have one pair that I really use, but I keep the previous pair in case of emergency. I don’t replace every two years (more like every six or so), so the old pair is pretty old.
I love the idea of having a pair at work. Maybe I should replace every two years so that I can have a relatively current pair available for those ‘this contact really isn’t working for me’ days.
locomotive
I have 4 pairs from Warby Parker as well. I’ve been getting one pair per year and rotating them in/out, which helps with the boredom of having just one pair. I also have severe discomfort with contact lenses and wearing glasses has helped my eyes feel waaaay better, and I’m not going back or really willing to sacrifice too much variety for them. I use my FSA each year so it isn’t a huge expense.
S in Chicago
I have three. All three were really expensive when purchased because I have a very high prescription and demand highest-quality/thinnest glass. There’s the “good-good pair” that I bought two years ago because they are super pretty but they aren’t practical at all–they have a really delicate metal design on the arm and that makes them difficult for folks to tighten (and apparently stay tightened), and so I only wear them on the rare occasion I am not wearing contacts to work. (I get lots of compliments–but never again!) Then there are my normal glasses–these are stylish but kind of geek chic in design and so can go months without needing to be adjusted and still fit well. And then there are my three-year old glasses that are a bit scratched, but they are the absolute perfect to wear in bed at night when I fall asleep watching TV without fear that I’ll “ruin” my glasses.
Flower
To offer a dissenting opinion, I have one. If you count the pair that I haven’t gotten around to discarded which have half the current prescription, I guess it is two, but I haven’t worn those since getting my new ones.
I have a fairly weak prescription though, so I don’t wear glasses nightly or anything. I got my new glasses about 9 months ago and have worn them maybe 4 times (typically when I am sick and want to see the TV). My old pair (to be discarded) lasted me about 10 years, and I might have the first pair from another 10 years before that somewhere at my parents’ house.
houda
I only have one pair and didn’t change it in years. It is so beat up.
I heavily rely on visine for contacts
Yay glasses
I have ten pairs of glasses, most in the 20 to 30 dollar range thanks to Zenni Optical. I don’t have a very difficult/unique/special prescription or anything, though, so I am sure it isn’t always that cheap. I wear contacts a lot but like to mix it up with glasses, and I love having a ton of styles to choose from depending on my mood/outfit.
Miz Swizz
I have a massive zit on my face and it’s taking all my willpower not to mess with it and pop it. I’m rather fixated on it and can’t run around work complaining about it so I’m telling y’all.
Blonde Lawyer
Me too!! I just came back from the bathroom where I went to just look at it. It hurts so much. Mine is still under the skin so no popping it but it is pretty visible nonetheless. I keep repeating in my head “hands off, hands off, hands off.”
Maddie Ross
Here’s reason not to – that was me a month ago and I am STILL getting over it. It festered, came back, bled, etc. and still is noticeable, even with makeup. Let me serve as a warning ;)
Wildkitten
This is the only OTC thing I’ve found to actually work on current zits: http://www.cleanandclear.com/product/acne-treatments/advantage-acne-spot-treatment It’s even more effective if you catch them early.
I have it at home and at work, so I can put it on as soon as I notice, and it’s clear.
christineispink
I am obsessed with this: http://www.mariobadescu.com/drying-lotion. Mario Badescu Drying Lotion. Dab on at night whenever you have or are feeling a zit coming on. With the little ones, they disappear overnight, and for the terrible you-know-it’s-going-to-be-a-volcano ones, they still rather quickly disappear (but not overnight) without ever coming to a head. It’s a little pricey but lasts quite a while (pro tip: don’t shake the bottle and put the cap back on ASAP). The quite distinctive color and smell has led me to google using plain old calamine but I haven’t done that yet.

Question for you ladies: My husband and I are currently TTC – we are only on month 2. I thought going into this that I shouldn’t drink between day 14 (approx. ovulation) and day 28 (my period). There is a networking happy hour I typically attend every month that is coming up next week and will fall during my no drinking period. I thought first about declining the invitation, then about going and not drinking, then about going and having one drink. Can anyone help me out on this one? Did you drink when you were TTC? Am I being crazy for thinking that I absolutely shouldn’t have a drink?
LeChouette
Have a drink. Think about the millions, literally, of babies born every year to women who had a glass of wine before they knew they were pregnant.
Accountant Lady
It’s my understanding that you don’t even share a bloodstream with the embryo for the first few weeks after conception, so unless you’re going on some kind of insane crazy drug and alcohol benders that causes you major health problems, there’s very little chance of harming the embryo, especially from just having a drink or two. I drank regularly (but not heavily) until I got a positive pregnancy test.
It can take a long time to conceive, and for me I didn’t want to add to the stress of that by denying myself tasty adult beverages half of every month, or by living differently, like deciding to not even go to a networking event. Pregnancy lasts a really long time, and it has been weirdly alienating for me to feel so different and have to modify my behavior for such a long time (I’m in the third trimester right now). I say take advantage of feeling “normal” for as long as you can, and try not to worry too much.
Mika
Yes, you are being overly cautious. At this early stage, alcohol won’t pass from you to the fetus. And even later on alcohol generally won’t make it to the fetus unless you are drinking enough to get drunk. One drink on a not empty stomach should be fine. I would recommend that you read up on this a bit, for example Expecting Better, which explains the science and research behind the various ‘rules’ people quote so that you can make an informed decision. Best of luck!
Anon
This. Drink ’til it’s pink! – from a fellow TTCer
whut
No, you are not crazy for thinking you should not drink while trying to conceive. But you should ask your doctor about whether it is safe to drink. Why are you asking strangers on the internet?!?
Silvercurls
Because this site is all about asking strangers on the internet. Well, also about seeing how the strangers are often quite skilled at tactfully communicating somewhat uncomfortable messages. Example: Mika at 7:20 p.m. writes “I would recommend that you read up on this a bit…” instead of “OMG! Why don’t you KNOW this already?!!”
Wildkitten
She’s not yet pregnant, so she probably doesn’t talk to a doctor every week, yet. And all the internet strangers who replied had smart, insightful things to say.
Kiki
Fashion question: do you buy Jimmy Choos (and the like)?
I have a hard time finding heels that are comfortable — I normally spend about $120 on shoes but have recently been buying ones that are more like $250 (from j crew etc) but have had to send the back because they are very very uncomfortable.
So I went and tried on Jimmy Choos and not only are they gorgeous but they feel awesome. Now I want to buy five pairs.
What should I do?
anon
buy them all and enjoy.
houda
I do not buy designer shoes. I have a combination of knee/feet issues such as I can only wear “comfort” heels, or padded shoes. So most coveted brands are a no-go.
Funny enough, my knee condition requires that I wear a mini heel at all time. I cannot wear flats.
txatty
Yep. If they’re within your general budget/financial constraints, buy them and make your feet happy. For work shoes, I rotate between Jimmy Choo and Louboutin. Have a few pairs of Manolo Blahnik and Miu Miu that are good for not-standing-all-day days. Valentino makes some gorgeous shoes, but sadly they don’t work for my feet.
