These hammered gold hoops — handmade in Canada — look lovely. I like the tiny size, and the fact that you can get rose gold, white gold, or nickel-free 14K palladium white gold for the same price. They're $75 at Etsy. Silver Cedar Jewelry Gold Hoop Earrings (L-2)Sales of note for 9.16.24

Any recommendations for a gradual sunless self tanner lotion? I’m very pale and would like something that will look natural with minimal effort. Not looking for a major tan, just trying to make my legs look more uniform in color.
Shopaholic
I’ve never used it myself but I have friends who can’t stop raving about St Tropez (foam I think?) You can find it at sephora
KLM
Best gradual self tanner is St Tropez foam (lighter option). Either use as directed or add a little into your face lotion and leg moisturizer.

I haven’t tried it, but reviews confirm the two above recommendations for St. Tropez as the best. If you want to try the self-tanner concept generally at a lower price point, Clinique was one of the best reviewed that I saw. I ordered that so I could see if I would actually use it regularly and like the effects to justify the more expensive stuff, and it’s still in the box, so no St. Tropez for me. I have a hard time finding down time when I can apply it, wait for it to dry before even touching anything or getting dressed, and then just sitting at home for 4-8 hours until I can shower off the smell and put on clothes that I don’t care about getting stained.

That’s what I am afraid of, too. I was more thinking one of those lotions you put on after shaving that slowly builds a bit of color with time. Jergens does one and Nivea too, I think, but I can’t remember which one I’ve tried and disliked.
Emmabean
I recommend Target’s version. I think it smells better.

I haven’t used Jergens in a while so they may have improved the formula, but I didn’t care for the smell–I would not feel ok going to work with it on, but I suppose fine for grocery store-type errands.
I’ve tried applying at night, but it stains my sheets badly enough that it doesn’t come out in the wash (it might with a stronger detergent like Era, but I’m allergic to fragrance and dye-containing detergents). It’s also so absurdly hot and humid where I live that layering up with an old long sleeve tee and pants makes me sweat off all the color overnight. Lastly, I work out first thing in the morning and any color that was still on my skin when I got up stains my exercise clothes and just turns into a streaky mess when my sweat starts pouring (see heat and humidity). Just not for me, but maybe those aren’t issues for you.

I apply the St. Tropez at night. First I take a quick shower to rinse off any lotions/exfoliate if necessary. Then I apply the tanner with an application mitt. Takes about 5 minutes to dry, then I put on an old tee-shirt and off to bed. Any color transfer to my sheets or clothing comes off in the laundry. I shower first thing in the morning and the color is good to go.
I’ve used the gradual ones before (Jergens used to have one?) and got okay results. The St Tropez has worked far better than other at home or spray tan machines in terms of application and non-orange color.

I have trouble getting the middle of my upper back though! Tan Towel is easier to apply, but the color isn’t as noticeable. St. Tropez = heavier color; Tan Towel = better application, at least for me.

Yeah, it’s definitely a two person job to get perfect coverage. Fortunately, my husband is a meticulous assistant.

Try the Neutrogena lotion.

I’m very pale and in the summer I’ve had success with jergens gradual lotion (body and face) and Loreal tan towelettes.

+1. Makes me not transparent but by no means tan. You do have to rub it in good–if you’re in a rush an leave a random glob somewhere, it does leave a streak.

Pale, translucent skin here too with the same thought. I tried the Jergens last week on my legs for 3 days and was pleasantly surprised. I used the Jergens Face one (thinking it might be more subtle or fine), and I thought it smelled and applied fine. It was spf 30.

I don’t like the smell of any of the self-tanners that I’ve used, and I could never tell when I applied it how it would turn out, so instead I use Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs lotion. It comes in several shades and is both cheap and at my local CVS. It’s essentially leg makeup. I mix it with a little lotion to make it even paler. It dries quickly, doesn’t smell, doesn’t come off on my clothes, and washes off in the shower.

Agreed. Self-tanner smells weird and can be orangey. Sally Hansen looks great.

I haven’t found it available in the U.S. but Garnier Summer Body in Light is hands down the best gradual self-tanner I have used. Every time I go to London for work I stock up.

OOOH! Nickle-less hoops…I may have to splurge on these.

Somewhat on-topic question: any recs for replacement earring backs? I bought a lovely pair of studs, but the backs are terrible. I then bought a pack of replacement silicone backs on ebay, which are only slightly better. I really like these earrings and don’t want to lose one – where do I get an earring back that will actually grip?
Kelly Andthenblog
Craft stores usually have decent ones!

Go on Amazon and search for secure earring backs. There are a lot of choices.
The Office Stylist
These are super cute! I haven’t worn hoop earrings in a while. Glad the trend is coming back, haha.
XC
I really like these earrings. It’s so hard to find solid gold earrings, not gold plated silver.
Any tips on navigating etsy? I was on a search for gold hoops, but I was overwhelmed by all of the options – some on target but most not.

I also love gold earing’s, but you have to be carful. Many places sell cheap gold plated (or fake gold) earing’s that scuff off after a few week’s. I bought something at a street fair from a guy with a big mustache who said the gold was 18 Carrot’s. In 18 day’s it wore off and I took it to a jewelery expert who told me it was not even gold at all. I paid $175 for them, but I never saw that guy again. Alan laughed at me and said that at least with CVS, he could alway’s bring back stuff I would not use. FOOEY!
Do not buy from guy’s at street fair’s especially those with big mustache’s who claim the gold is real. I am now economizing and am NOT buying any jewelery b/c I must save for retirement and do NOT want to loose my 401k benefit or have to borrow from it to start up my OWN businesses. FOOEY b/c what good is clotheing if I cant wear jewls. Ivanka wears a lot of nice jewls and Jared did NOT even give them to her. Yay for Ivanka!
I need to find a guy to marry so that I do NOT have to work any more. I am getting old and realy need to start a family, but NOT with any Schlub. Does anyone in the hive have a BROTHER for me? YAY!!!!
S in Chicago
Why oh why must by brother be married? You would be the most awesome SIL. I would look forward to every holiday like never before.

I’m going to be traveling to the Northeast and Europe for work this summer and was thinking of getting a trench coat for the rain (more for Europe, where it may be cooler in the evenings as well). I have seen some trenches in polyester, some in nylon, and some in cotton. Are there pros/con’s to the materials I should think about? From SoCal, where we don’t need to think about rain as much, especially not as part of summer weather.
Anonymous
No cotton – that will absorb water. Polyester is fine if it’s going to be cooler, but may be too hot for warmer rainy weather. Not sure about nylon, though.
Anonymous
Nylon won’t breathe well either. Waxed cotton could be worth while – it will be water resistant and good for a sprinkle or misting, but not protection against a downpour. Even regular good cotton twill would be fine for occasional sprinkles.
Anonymous
I don’t think you really need a rain coat in the Northeast or Europe in the summer (assuming you mean June-August). It doesn’t rain much and when it does the temperatures are so warm that you don’t really need a coat; just carry an umbrella. If you do really want one, I’d go with a light fabric and a short (hip-length) style. If you go with a heavier fabric or a long coat you will be way too warm.
Snoozy
Depends where you’re going. I wore a trench coat to watch the world cup final outdoors in Germany last summer, and needed it. However, in general I’d vote for cotton plus an umbrella unless you’ll be in places where getting around outdoors in all weathers is standard and/or it can be very windy. (Edinburgh, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam and Hamburg are places I like to have a waterproof/windproof jacket on hand, absent unusual heat.)
Anonymous
Thanks all for the input. I will be in northern Europe, where it does tend to stay chilly in the evening. I’ll start looking into some options.

These are just like the starter hoops most kids in South Asia wear when their ears are first pierced. No thanks…..I don’t want to wear what my 3 year old will soon be wearing!
