6pm has a number of “desk to dinner” comfort shoes on sale today, include Sofft, Isola, Clarks, Naturalizer, Oh! Shoes, Vanelli, and more. I feel like these Sofft Mary Janes have been around, in one form or another, for years. I'm guessing most people will be thinking one of two things when looking at this shoe: “Gee, I never wear heels — but maybe I could wear those.” In which case, hooray! The other portion of you may be thinking, “I always wear heels, and those are ugly.” In which case, maybe they'd be great commuting shoes for you when wearing pants — you can maintain the hemmed height of your regular heels, but with a shoe designed for comfort. Whichever group you fall into, the deal is pretty great: they were $109.95, but are now marked to $32.99 at 6pm (available in four colors). Sofft Valda Pump (L-3) P.S. I have these in two colors and find them very wearable. I’m a sucker for a Mary Jane and these seem to be dressier than most flat versions. Extremely comfortable as well.
ANP
Can you speak to how they run? I’m a pretty solid 8 and they’re sold out in my size in the shiny brown color. Wondering if I can go up a half-size…
zora
Are they easy to walk in/do you walk a lot in them? The heel looks like it’s positioned in a weird place. But I lurv Sofft
Mountain Girl
I find that Sofft as a brand runs about a half size small. I usually wear a 9. I order a 9.5 in Sofft. I walk in them all day long and actually find the heel to be really stable. The heel ends up in a straight line directly under my ankle and seems to make them really stable for walking. They are definitely comfortable. If I didn’t already own them in the colors available in my size I would buy another pair today. I paid full price for them so this is definitely a steal.
Shopping help - grey flats
I have been searching for grey flats, preferably pointy toed ones, with no success. Help!
Business flats, not weekend/casual flats.
Morgan
Are you open to suede, or are you looking for polished leather? Patent?
Shopping help - grey flats
Either polished leather or patent – no suede. I’m like the Dos Equis man when it comes to suede (I don’t spill coffee on my shoes often, but when I do, I’m wearing my suede shoes). I’ve given up.

“I don’t spill coffee on my shoes often, but when I do, I’m wearing my suede shoes.”
Oh my goodness, I laughed so hard on this because I saw Elvis’ face on the body of the Dos Equis man. :)
Morgan
Shoot, I accidentally “reported” your previous comment. I feel like I see more gray in suede than leather, but how about these? Great deal!
http://www.6pm.com/nine-west-taker-grey-leather
There was a surprisingly large selection of grey flats on 6pm if you do a search. Calvin Klein and Frye ones, too.

I have those in black and they have not held up well, I have to say. I’m pretty hard on shoes to be honest, but I was disappointed by how worn they look after not too long.

Organizing TJ — I desperately need to get rid of some of our lesser-used pots and pans, as our kitchen cupboards are becoming unmanageable. As the child of a hoarder, however, I have some guilt about splitting up sets. For example, I registered for a set of three nonstick pans at our wedding 6 years ago. We only use two of those and I’d like to just get rid of the third but…GUILT. I consider myself a relatively good/proficient cook and I’m fairly confident I know what I need in the kitchen department but…more guilt. Any tips?
Anon
Donate kitchen goods you don’t need to a shelter for battered women. Someone who had to flee her home with very few possessions will be very grateful to have a pan to use when she starts to rebuild her life.
Anonymous
The domestic abuse women’s shelter is my favourite place to give my unnecessary things – the one in my city recently started accepting half-full or more beauty products, they got a real haul from me, and my bathroom is so much less cluttered.
Bewitched
I found an agency in our community which collects donation for recent refugees who are settling in the area. They need everything-but decent quality pots/pans/linens are areas of particular need. Thinking about a new refugee in a new country with my slightly used, unwanted items-guilt solved!
LizNYC
Seriously examine that nonstick cookwear. Does it have any chipping or scratches in it? Then it should be tossed without a second thought.
If it’s all fine, then I’ll echo other commenters’ suggestions to donate it.
Walnut
Donate! I tell myself that it is more wasteful for something to sit unused in my house when it has useful value to another person.
Killer Kitten Heels
This is my logic as well.
Also I donate frequently to Savers (giant thrift department store that benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters) – I like them because they take EVERYTHING and I know their stores fill a real need for extremely-low-priced home goods in my community.
Lyssa
I’m the same way – one thing that helps me is to set aside a large-ish box somewhere out of the way. Whenever I come across something that I think that I don’t need, it goes in the box. When the box gets full (well, overflowing), then I take it to donate. Putting stuff in the box is much easier than giving it up right away (since it’s still there in case I suddenly decide that I absolutely can’t live without it), and then getting rid of it months (or years) later is easier because I know that I haven’t touched it in so long.
preg 3L
+1. I have a whole drawer in my dresser dedicated to “donate” clothes. After being too quick to donate a few times (and needing to replace items that I donated), I’ve really appreciated having a place to toss things for a month (or more) while I find out that I really won’t miss those items.
Nonny
I have a similar box in my garage, and have for years. It works really well.
NOLA
Nonstick cookware is one of the few things you shouldn’t feel bad about. Nonstick wears off and needs to be replaced. I’ve had to replace some of mine and not others. It’s inevitable. No guilt!
Mpls
I swear they only sell “sets” because that’s the way they convince people they need that many pans. Don’t worry about splitting sets – if you only use certain pots, that’s fine. Donate the remaining utensils so someone can get some use out of it!

I just returned from a 2 week vacation and have a mountain of stuff to do, but I have no focus or motivation. Tried making a to-do list but got overwhelmed and distracted. Tips? commiseration?

Commiseration: I was out for two weeks for medical reasons and I feel so overwhelmed. I am trying to just focus on cleaning up my Inbox today along with a couple small goals for the day. It’s hard to jump back in after being gone for any length of time! Hope you had a great vacation! ;-)

Any tips on how to do a monochromatic look? I’ve been trying to do it more frequently because I think it makes me look taller and put together. I could be wrong on those two points, so feel free to correct me.
I don’t want to look matchy matchy, or on the other end of the spectrum, like I got dressed in the dark, so any suggestions are appreciated.
TO Lawyer
I think the best way to add interest to a monochromatic look is to mix up texture. I however only really do this with black so I’m probably not the best person to give advice. But I think mixing textures on a monochromatic look always looks chic.
Avodah
I’m short, and I find that monochromatic dresses make me look taller and more put-together. My favorite is this blue Elie Tahari dress w/ a multi-colored blue statement necklace. I try to keep the colors “together” like shirt matches necklaces and shoes match pants.
Anonymous
I just pinned an all black look to Pinterest that had a chunky necklace to add visual interest.
Another option is to go monochromatic, but add a shoe in a complimenting, but not matching color. I am picturing: navy silk blouse tucked into navy pencil skirt with light grey suede shoes.
A last option is colors in the same family, but not exact. So two different blues or two different reds. I saw this in one of the magazines this fall (amazingly helpful, I know, but there’s no way I remember where — I read InStyle, Lucky (mostly a hate read at this point) and People Style Watch) and it looked fantastic.
I think monochromatic works best with more subtle colors so as to avoid looking like a giant, walking piece of fruit. Navy, burgandy, grey, winter white, black.
Bonnie
Different textures or great accessories. You can also go for a modified monochromatic look by pairing items in different shades of the same color.
Adele
Any thoughts on whether this sort of sheath can work for the fuller on top among us? For reference, I am an hourglass-y DD current size 6/8 and wondering if something like this dress/matching blazer will be flattering or better left to the less full-figured. It’s a bit of a pain to return to Last Call so I wanted the Hive’s expert opinion before I ordered. Also, general thoughts: is a dress & blazer combo like this a bit dated? I know I can wear the dress with a black cardi just fine but I’d like to wear both pieces in place of suits, too. Still fashionable?

Great dress! I don’t think I would wear together with the jacket, but the jacket with a solid complimentary colored (can’t tell on my screen if that would be black or navy, or maybe a green) sheath or pencil skirt would be nice. Unfortunately I’m not sure it would work for your shape without tailoring though; looks like you would have to size up for it to be comfortable up top and then have fitted around the waist.
Hel-lo
I think both of those pieces are beautiful, and I think wearing them together would be fine. :)
(But yes, unfortunately you may have to size up and then get the waist tailored.)
Bonnie
I’d definitely wear the two pieces together. In my experience though, this type of neckline makes well-endowed women look really large on top.
Lyssa
Threadjack: I’ve been looking for a new dress to wear to work, and I picked up this over the weekend: http://www.anntaylor.com/hourglass-sheath-dress/297145?colorExplode=false&skuId=14569883&catid=cata000012&productPageType=fullPriceProducts&defaultColor=6600 . I probably would never have bought it, just on the grounds of price (I never buy full priced clothing from Ann Taylor-type stores), but my husband was very insistent that it looked great and I should get it.
So, I’m wearing it today, and I’m feeling a lot more awkward than I expected. The material is nice and thick, so it’s not as clingy as it could be, but it is fairly body-conscious. I don’t usually worry about that sort of thing, on the grounds that I don’t really have much body to be conscious of (I’m very thin and not at all curvy). The neckline is fine, it’s the shoulders and waist that bug me, I think. Granted, I hardly ever go bare-armed at work, but it seems silly to cover the features of the dress up. Also, the dress is a stretchy material, and, while it is a good length when I’ve tugged it down, it rides up as I walk to a few inches above my knees.
So, a few questions: First, understanding that you can’t see me, am I crazy to be worried about the body-consciousness of it? My husband says I’m being silly and should just enjoy that I look nice. (Note that he’s never worked in an office, though.)
Second, can you think of any alternatives to a jacket/cardi to cover my arms? Not so much for modesty’s sake as for temperature management. I do like the print and would like to show it off, but I’m usually cold. The idea of a turtleneck underneath sounds a little off to me, but then, I don’t usually wear turtlenecks.
Third, anything that I can do about the riding up issue? I haven’t worn a slip since I was in elementary school, but might that or some kind of foundation garment help? If so, please, give me guidance about what kinds! I’m lost here. Also, might it be possible for a tailor to take out the hem a little bit and make it longer? (The hem is a little over an inch wide now.)
I know that there’s a know your office aspect here, but my office is less knowable than I’d like (small, only a few women, no dress-code guidance). Typical biz-cas law firm, I would say. It was more than I’d usually spend, and I do really like the dress, but I’m worried I jumped the gun here.
Anon
With the preface that I’m a conservative workplace dresser – this strikes me more as a date-night dress than an office dress.
V
Maybe a Chanel-style boucle jacket would tone it down a bit, but I agree that it reads evening / non-office.
preg 3L
It’s an adorable dress, but I agree that it’s more date-night than office… mostly because of the temperature control issue though. Maybe a blazer/cardi can make it less body-con and more work-appropriate?
Diana Barry
+1. I would put a blazer or cardigan over it. Otherwise it reads a bit evening/c-tail.
Veronique
+2. I would definitely wear it to work with a blazer, especially if if I was less curvy, but not on its own. I also stick to the style rule that bare arms are not appropriate in the office, so I wouldn’t wear any sleeveless dress on it’s own.
OCAssociate
I was considering this dress, but decided not to get it for the reasons you’re mentioning: bare arms, a little too body conscious (I’m pretty curvy).
Re: foundation garments – I usually wear a Spanx full-body slip with more body conscious dresses. It seems to help with riding-up issues. (It’s part of the “assets” line – the open bust body slip.)
Blair Waldorf
1. This doesn’t look too body conscious to me. The part I would be worried about is neckline, but you said that’s a non-issue. I think it would also work as an after-work outfit, but it seems fine for work.
2. I would style this with a black collarless blazer. I would not wear a turtleneck underneath. Maybe a long-sleeve blouse. I know you don’t want to cover up the pattern, but doing something like a throw sweater or shawl might make it even more evening-y. Something like this would work: http://www.hm.com/us/product/14935?article=14935-A#article=14935-D
3. Get a slip. You only need a skirt slip, like this: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/farr-west-charmeuse-half-slip/3335468?cm_cat=datafeed&cm_ite=farr_west_charmeuse_half_slip:577103&cm_pla=underwear/lingerie:women:slip&cm_ven=Google_Product_Ads&mr:referralID=0d177294-1f0c-11e3-bae4-001b2166c2c0
A tailor can let out the hem if there is any to work with. It sounds like you could get it lowered almost an inch, and I don’t think that would be too expensive.
Also, I really like this dress for what it’s worth!!
Lyssa
Sigh. I swear it looked perfectly business-like on the mannequin in the store. I should have tried it on with heels. I don’t really need another date dress, at least at that price.

Life lesson # 238947925: Never Trust the Mannequin.
No snark intended. It took me ages to figure this one one, and I still sometimes fall for the Mannequin Effect. Which is of course what the window dressers intend.
S in Chicago
Mannequin Effect. Ha! So true. I also fall for the dreaded “Clerk Effect.” That’s when some sales associate who has entirely different coloring and body type is completely rocking a look and I fool myself into thinking I can do the same.
marketingchic
I’d add a cardigan or blazer, plus opaque black tights and black pumps in cooler weather.
Baconpancakes
Yowza! That dress is super s3xy! I would keep it for special date nights – clearly your husband liked you in the dress. It might be ok for the office with a longer black blazer or a loose cardigan.

From the back, its just basically a frame around the wearer’s bum. “Look here.”

Why not something black long-sleeved under it for warmth?
I’d keep it for date nights. I love the dress. :)

TJ on birth control pills. I’m 41. I know I’m getting close to the age my mother was when she went through menopause. That being said, I’m still on the pill.
The particular pill I take has a 12 week cycle, rather than a 4 week. On the off-week, I always have a migraine, and my brain just takes a vacation.
Last week was the worst of these I’ve ever had. I likened it this morning to playing all the roles in The Wizard of Oz, and never knowing which character was coming out to play at any given moment. One moment, I’d be the brainless Scarecrow, while the next I’d be the Wicked Witch, then 5 minutes later I’d be off and running as the heartless Tin Man. Once in a while, I’d hit on the flim-flam artist known as The Wizard for a few minutes. The Cowardly Lion poked out a few times, too.
If you’re on a 12-week cycle pill, and you’ve found one that doesn’t have an off-week, could you share what it is? I can’t function like last week to many times. (I seriously considered calling in sick from Tuesday on, just because I couldn’t think to save my life.) I have an appointment for a physical coming up in a few weeks, and we are going to have to discuss finding me other options.
mascot
I have no advice, but your description of the multiple personalities is hilarious. As I have gotten older, I’ve found that I can’t tolerate the pill. The headaches were bad enough, but the increasing tendency to turn into a raging witch (complete with flying monkeys) just wasn’t fair to people around me.
OCAssociate
I know this isn’t what you asked, but: my neurologist recommended that since I’m over 35 and get migraines, hormonal bc is bad idea. Higher chance of stroke. After my next pregnancy I’m probably going with a mirena.
But hopefully you can find something that works well for you.
buffybot
Ahhh, this “report” button is not working for me either. Sorry, mascot, did not mean to report you.
Instead, meant to agree: My neurologist insisted that with migraines (with visual aura), I could not be on dual hormone birth control. That is, no progesterone/estrogen mix, progesterone only.
I imagine that over 35 would only make that recommendation stronger. Apparently the World Health Organization has a pretty strong recommendation against it.
Anonymous
The hormonal migraines are what caused me to stop taking hormonal birth control and get a Paraguard. I tried switching to a 12-week cycle pill but I still got migraines on the off-week.
anon
Hormones (first puberty, then BC) always make me migraine-prone. There have been times when pregnant that I have also had some killer almost-migraine headaches. I second the rec to think about moving to a non-hormonal BC option (requisite plug for IUDs; I haven’t had any issues with the M*rena, which has local hormones). If I got migraines as often as you say you do I would have stopped BC a loooong time ago–mine are enough to knock me out for a day or more. Good luck finding a better solution.
Blue
I take a 12 week, but I skip the off week always (due to out of control cramps, not migraines), can you just do that?
R
I used to get awful awful cramps and migraines every single time Aunt Flo visited. Before I got pregnant, I was on the generic form of Seasonique but I’d skip the last week and just keep taking it. I “let” myself get 1-2 periods a year, at most, and after a few years of being on it, they would typically have more mild symptoms, or the migraine would be only the first day.
I justified it by thinking that most women were pregnant or breastfeeding most of their childbearing years, so it’s technically less natural to have a period every month for 15+ years. There’s not a ton of evidence either way on safety of this, and of course insurance doesn’t cover the extra packs. But maybe an option for you?
Mpls
Tangential aside – I once calculated that my grandma was pregnant for 12 years, if you put all the pregnancies back to back.
Baconpancakes
SIXTEEN KIDS????
Mpls
Well, 18 pregnancies, since Gma tended to 8 mth pregnancies (according to my mom), but of those 18, 16 survived past birth. So, yeah – 16 kids. Makes the 12 on my dad side look puny.
Yes, we may be Catholic. And grew up on farms.
Mpls
No multiples, but one set of Irish triplets – 3 siblings born within 2 years.
Anonymous
Ugggh. I’m experiencing my first pregnancy and it may well be my last. 12 years of being pregnant is unimaginable to me!
cbackson
For what it’s worth, the “period” you have on standard-cycle hormonal birth control isn’t actually a period, because you don’t ovulate. So it’s no more natural to do three-week-on, one-week-off BCP than to take them continuously. In fact, the researchers who originally developed the pill considered formulating and packaging it for continuous use, but thought that women would want the reassurance of bleeding monthly as a verification that the user wasn’t pregnant.
NOLA
I’m 48 and I sometimes get headaches or what feels like pressure and an eeyore kind of feeling during the week when I’m off of BC. My gyn put me on the Vivelle dot hormone patch for that week. Sometimes it doesn’t help but it mostly does.
I keep wondering about menopause. My gyn is recommending that I stay on BC because it keeps me at stable hormone levels when I might be all over the place. I’m not wild about it, but I’m doing it. Just when I haven’t had a period in months, I got back to being fairly regular. My mom died in her late 40s so I don’t have any frame of reference.
Tuesday
I had cyclical headaches (terrible, terrible headaches). I tried many bcps. The first thing that worked for me was not a pill but the shot (depo), which I used until the FDA black-boxed it. Now I use the ring, continuously (no off week). Ask your doctor if you can just start the new pack in week 13 instead of week 14 if you otherwise like the bcp you’re using.

I am loving this quilting trend for fall/winter! I’m normal not a huge fan of regular (horizontal) quilting, but I love that more interested quilted jackets (diamonds, diagonals, etc.) are everywhere! I absolutely love the Burberry Mordale jacket, but it’s more than I want to spend. Any suggestions for something similar in the $50-$250 range?
ShaneBot
I am with you. I have been tempted by but haven’t pulled the trigger on one for years.
Jcrew, BR, and LLBean all seem to have knockoffs of them this fall, which I want (and are aroun$100-125 with discounts), but then I wonder if I’ll love it as much. (My mother bought one from BR before the popularity of these jackets exploded and has worn it a ton!)
AIMS
I feel like these have been around for a while now so you should have many options. I even remember having a quilted jacket in college from esprit, I think, that I got at Marshall’s for about $40.
Nordstrom has a couple different ones for about $130-150 from Lauren Ralph Lauren. Old Navy has a “barn jacket” version for $50 less whatever discount promo they are running. Vince Camuto has a belted version that I’ve seen. Lord & Taylor also has a couple from CK and similar brands on sale. And I just did a random google, and this really cute one came up – not familiar with the brand, but love the floral lining: http://www.boohoo.com/usa/clothing/coats+jackets/icat/coatsandjackets/all-coats/leann-quilted-floral-lined-jacket/invt/azz49302?utm_source=AWIN&utm_medium=AFF&utm_term=92295&cm_mmc=affiliates-_-affiliate_window-_-92295-_-alpha&awc=2319_1379373167_73b2c2647180cac9a642c0dd52de309f

Meant to add, if you’re not attached to a particular color you can also usually find the real deal on sale at the end of the season or grab one at a Friends & Family sale. If your heart is set on Burberry, sign up for Saks and Bloomingdales emails.

Can anyone recommend a good either TV review/discussion site, or at least a site that has discussions/recaps of Breaking Bad season 4 and season 5pt1? I’m always a bit behind in TV, since I wait for Netflix or iTunes, but since my husband often doesn’t watch the shows with me, I feel like I want to go read something to see what other peoples’ reactions were. (Like the season finale of season 4? Um, what happened and was that in any way realistic?) Any recommendations?

televisionwithoutpity.com; sometimes a little too snarky if you ask me but the recaps are pretty detailed the the discussion boards for most shows are pretty active

I used to read a lot of twop several years ago, but then stopped because it was being overtaken by “kids” who weren’t snarky enough. Oh, to be in my early 20s again.
Lyssa
I haven’t watched Breaking Bad (I keep thinking I really missed out, though – if I ever get some time, I plan to get the back seasons), but I’ve really enjoyed Slate’s coverage/discussions (in the comments) of other shows, particularly of The Walking Dead, and I know they’ve been doing a weekly series on Breaking Bad.
zora
I love Videogum. They don’t do full recaps of *every* episode, but I think the writers and the commenters are funnier and less snarky than other recap sites. I can’t read it at work anymore, because I can’t stop myself from laughing out loud pretty much constantly. ;o)
AIMS
I really love the AVClub dot com for this sort of thing. The discussion in the comments tends to be more for current posts (they usually post a review within hours of an episode airing) but they have old reviews for BB and a ton of other shows and I tend to enjoy just reading the review & comments even without participation.
Too often, TV reviews like this are either really dull (X, Y, Z happened. It was/wasn’t awesome) or just really self-important (making grand “connections” where none may exist), but I find that the AV Club is pretty perfect in terms of giving you the key summary, reveling in the awesome moments/lines, and wrapping it all up with some insightful commentary that actually gives you some food for thought. NYC florist?
I want to send flowers to my mom for her birthday. Do any of you ladies recommend a local florist on the UES or in Midtown who will deliver to her? I hate using the national 1-800 florists because I find the product is lower quality and the markup steep. Thanks!

If you don’t get a better answer, I’ve just called random local florists off google instead of using the 1-800s, and it’s gone well for me so far.
Anon in NYC
Look up Fresh Cut Flowers on 43rd between 10th & 11th. The flowers are always gorgeous, last a reasonable length of time, and they’ll work within whatever budget you provide. I don’t know if they have any delivery range restrictions.
Killer Kitten Heels
The Windsor Florist at 1118 Lexington (UES). I haven’t ordered delivery from them, but I’ve purchased arrangements from their storefront before and their flowers are really pretty, plus the store is large-ish and well-stocked.

You could also try Eva’s Garden at 1506 1st Ave (UES). They did a great job with my wedding flower bouquets and arrangements. I haven’t used them for any other deliveries though.

No local recommendations, but I’ve always had good luck with proflowers dot com

I love thebouqs.com. All of their bouquets are $40, including shipping. And you can usually find a 20% off coupon as well.

Payless BOGO50%
Payless is doing Buy One Get One 50% off right now. I was able to get the discount buying two pairs of the Karmen pump which many ladies on this site rave about for its comfort. Also the nude-for-some croc, bronze, and an ostrich print are already half off (so with the 50% from buying another pair they were $7.50).

Nice! Hopefully my store has similar bargains. Looks like Payless’ website has its own troll, pretty much every shoe I looked at had a “I’m a man who likes to wear womens’ shoes…” review.

Ladies,
I have an interview on Thursday for a promotional opportunity. Basically, I am applying for the job I am currently in, but at a higher pay grade. Other people are also applying for there own jobs at the higher pay. Some of the other applicants have more experience. I work for the government as a project lead to give some background. Any tips preparing for this interview?
Thanks!

Paging NOLA – Sorry this is SO late, and I know a ton of r*ttes gave great advice earlier today, but I’m just getting on here now (long day).
I’m younger than you, but just went to Sephora with my mom, and she picked up Anastasia’s brow pencil (I use it as well, actually). It comes in very natural colors, and I’ve found that defining/filling in your brows can totally change the look of your face. I’m very, very fair and I have super blonde eyebrows and eyelashes (I’m a redhead). When I fill in my brows (takes about 5 minutes) it totally brightens up my face. My mom found that the same applied for her.
I also swear by Korres Greek Yoghurt night mask. It’s cooling, very soothing, and feels amazing on my skin, especially if you put in the in the fridge.
Also, Bobbi Brown has a great under-eye concealer that I love.
So there are a few makeup suggestions, but more than anything give yourself some TLC. You deserve it! If you’re able to take a day for yourself, sleep in, loiunge around, use a face mask, have a cocktail, read a great book…do whatever makes you happy. I’m sure you know this, but stress alone takes a huge toll on everything. You deserve a break!
