These shoes caught my eye during last week's strappy pumps roundup, and a week later I still think they great for what they are: an inexpensive heel from the makers of Hush Puppies. I like the Mary Jane strap, the rounded toe, and the pearlized patent. They're cheapest at 6pm (priced $36-$47 in purple (pictured), black, brown and red), but still available on Zappos as well, where you can look through the 31 largely positive reviews. Fleece leggings help needed! I have several pairs from Walgreens. At first, they were fine but now the waistbands on all are so loose. Did I buy the wrong size or is this just what happens to them after several wears? For reference, I’m a size 6 normally with longish legs. These only came in two sizes (s/m or l/xl) and mine are the l/xl because I figured I would want the extra length. Plus, the legs fit really well so I can’t figure out if I’m wearing the right size or not.

Fleece tights troll, where are you now?
FLEECE TIGHTS!!!
you rang? seriously though i was going to post anyway about whether or not these shoes would go with fleece tights but this chick beat me to the punch

This isn’t real, is it? How many questions on fleece tights can there be. Also, yes, if you are buying your tights at WALGREENS, they are going to stretch out after a couple of wears.
Can a tiny bit of common sense be used around here?

Um, this was a real question. But I’m sorry to have offended you.

I bought my FLEECE TIGHTS at Nordstrom Rack and they haven’t held up especially well. Lots of pilling anywhere my shoes touch them, and they have stretched out. I still may buy another pair though–they were only $6-7 and I got about 10 wears out of them before they looked too nappy to wear to work (I can still wear them with tall boots I suppose).

After the 2008 election the Walgreens near President Obama’s house proclaimed itself ‘Obama Election Headquarters’ and sold every kind of Obama-related paraphenalia you can imagine. I particularly liked the children’s book about his childhood.

CVS in DC did the same for 2008 inauguration.

As long as we’re talking FLEECE TIGHTS, I recently tried the fleece-lined running tights from Nordstrom’s Zella brand and I have to say they are awesome. Obviously not the same thing, but pretty amazing in their own way. Just the right amount of warmth and compression.
tesyaa
Take it from someone who wears skirts every day: I have stayed away from the fleece tights trend and stuck with my regular tights. If it’s very, very cold, I recommend layering two pairs of tights (and if you’re wearing any kind of boots, you can get away with the second pair being footless, which is much more comfortable). Avoid the trends and stick with the tried and true.
Leigh
I also wear skirts every day, and LOVED my fleece tights for winter. They actually stuck to my skirt less than regular tights do…

The words “fleece tights” are starting to look like they’re spelled wrong I’ve read them so many times now.

I just bought like three pairs of these for about $6 each at Marshalls, and they’re very warm.
Hush Puppies quality
I haven’t had good experiences with Hush Puppies quality. My sister and I both got pairs a few years ago and they both lasted 3 months before the insides were torn up. Naturally, N=2 in this experiment but it’s not a promising sign.

I agree. I love these pump’s but every time I read the word HUSH PUPPIE’S, I think of my dad when I was a little girl, and how he used to wear these clunky shoe’s that were swade, and how mad he got when he stepped in Susie’s poopie b/c there was tread on the bottom of those shoe’s. Suzie was our little puppie that did NOT ever get house broken b/f we gave it to Grandma Trudy.
Anyway, the IRS guy is still talkeing to the manageing partner, and I see that the manageing partner is sweateing b/c he has sweat ring’s under his arm’s of his suit. It is hot in here and he NEVER wear’s his jacket, but today, he is and you can tell he is sweateing! FOOEY! Margie will be mad that his suit has sweateing stains on it unless they can be dry cleaned out, he will need a new suit. FOOEY b/c that mean’s less money for Margie to spend on herself.
Sam texted me about food, and so did FRED. I should never have given that guy my cell number. I should have just given him my FIOS number at home. What a jerk I was b/c his message’s keep poppeing up on my phone. I put a picture of a mule next to him so every time he call’s or text’s, there is a mule that come’s up, so at least it’s funny.
I have not put a picture up for Sam, and was thinkeing I should put a picture up of a winkie, but that would NOT be professional if I was in a meeting and all of a sudden a winkie showed up on my IPHONE. FOOEY! Willem also want’s to meet. He is a littel to stiff for me tho. I need a guy who is freindly but not that stiff.
Myrna thought the guy at the superbowl party was a jerk, but she knew him. She asked me if I wanted to date him. I said DOUBEL FOOEY to that!
I need a new guy in my life. YAY!!!!!

Ellen is super consistent about spelling suede “swade”. Most people who don’t know how to spell aren’t quite so consistent. Let’s see a suade, suedd, or my fave, and how I spelled it as a little kid, “swayed”.

Can you ever push for straight answer when interviewing? The position was supposed to start in December. I had two interviews. I checked in a week after they said I would hear, and they said that all candidates would hear soon. I checked in two week ago and they let me know last week that all candidates will hear soon. My husband is waiting to make his decision on a job until we hear about this (it involves a move) Is there anyway to ask for an exact date by which I will hear from them?
tesyaa
It’s stressful to wait, especially when other decisions are hanging on it, but it’s not a question of a “straight answer”. If their hiring process got delayed for whatever reason, they’re not ready to make an offer yet, at least not to you. You can’t really ask for an immediate answer unless you want them to tell you a definite no.
Stormborn
I would like them to tell me if the hiring process is delayed so I can make this decision. that’s the frusterating part.
Wannabe Runner
Sounds like you have your answer. Instead of incessantly calling, I think you could give them some useful info, like TBK says below. Otherwise the answer will soon be no from them.
TBK
I agree. It’s not clear from your post, but I’m guessing that you and your husband are hoping to move to a new city and both his offer and this job are in the new city? And if you don’t get this job he plans to turn down his offer and you both stay put? If so, then you can probably tell them what’s going on as long as it’s in a way that’s just giving them a head’s up that you won’t be available anymore if you don’t have an offer by a certain date. Because then you’re giving them information that’s useful to them. If they really like you, they might figure out how to make the offer more quickly. If it’s really still up in the air, there’ll be nothing they can do.

I got a gift card for my birthday to CwC. Trouble is, I find that their stuff runs big, and they don’t make PXXS or P0-2. What sorts of items could I be looking for where size isn’t quite as much of an issue? Their shoes & handbags aren’t particularly speaking to me…
zora
this isn’t what you asked, but honestly, if someone gave me a gift card for a store that didn’t really have my style or anything I liked, I’d post it for sale on craigslist for a little less than the value in cash. It’s not worth it to me to have stuff i only kinda like in my closet. Plus the time it is taking you to try to find something that you want is worth money, as well, you could be using the cash to buy something you have really wanted for a long time.

I agree, but there are a *few* things that could be nice basics, but again–too big. They do have some pretty accessories in the outlet. I will go to our local store to see if the sizing is really as off as I remember it being.

Career TJ — After waiting for four months, I just received a job offer for a job that I have been trying to get for four years. So excited! Anyway, some of the people I will be working with were instrumental in my getting the job and I would like to thank them somehow. I don’t think gifts are probably appropriate (it’s a government job), but does anyone else have any ideas on how I can show my appreciation (besides doing an awesome job when I report for duty)?

Write a heartfelt note of appreciation and include how much you are looking forward to working with them. It goes a long way. And, yes, then do an awesome job.
blender
I’m thinking of buying a small blender for smoothies, but I have zero counter space and also limited storage space for all thousand pieces that come with the Bullet. any recs for a small blender than can still handle frozen fruit?
Ginjury
I’d still recommend the Magic/Nutri Bullet. If you have space in a cabinet for two glasses, that would probably be enough room for the extra cups. We just stack ours in a higher cabinet. It’s also really useful for preparing smoothies for the week. On Sunday, I’ll throw spinach and whatever fruits in a few of the cups, seal them and put them in the freezer, so I guess that’s another storage option, too.
Sydney Bristow
Someone posted a hand blender/food processor here recently. I used to own a hand blender that worked well for smoothies but can’t remember what brand it was. I’m thinking about getting one and getting rid of my big blender I never use because cleaning it is a pain.

This is really not helpful, but I have a hand blender made by Braun that has really held up well. I don’t think they make for the 110V market anymore. If you find one, that’s what I’d recommend.

My mom has a Bamix hand blender that has lasted years and does a great job with individual smoothies. She used to use it to make baby food for my (much younger) brother & sister.

I’ve been using the Cuisineart Compact Blender and Food Chopper for 1.5 years and it is fantastic at blending frozen fruit, nuts, ice, whatever. It takes up very little counter space, and clean up is simple because I blend in the “to go” cup I take my smoothie to work in plus everything is dishwasher safe. It comes with 4 “to go” cups that I put overripe bananas and/or berries in and then store in the freezer ready for blending. I very highly recommend it.
J. Crew Tippi Styling
During a major sale some months ago, I overindluged and bought 4 or 5 J. Crew Tippi sweaters. I really like the fit of them and they’re easy to throw on, but lately I’ve been at a loss as to how to style them so I don’t feel like the woman who wears a different color of the same sweater every other day. I’d like my look to be more intentional, but still easy to pull together. I already wear scarves, but I think I need something more. Ideas?
KC
Some thoughts:
-Layer a shirt under them.
-Add a belt over one (at the waist).
-Layer under a blazer.
-If you wear one with a skirt on Monday, wear a different one with pants later in the week?
J. Crew Tippi Styling
That’s a good suggestion, wearing different styles of bottoms. With the weather lately, I’ve basically forgotten that I own skirts and have been sticking strictly to pants so I’ve really felt like I’m just wearing a uniform.

Also, one of the things I like about J. Crew is that their solid color offerings often pick up colors in their patterned offerings. So, if you bought a patterned pencil skirt, the chances are good that one of the colors in the skirt matches one of the Tippis.
Go with unconventional color pairings to avoid looking like you are wearing a uniform.

Has anyone here dealt with dry mouth? It’s become a problem for me all of a sudden and I’m not sure why. I’ve upped my fluids a ton but it doesn’t seem to be helping. It’s more of a constant paper-y feeling than anything else – I’m not having a hard time eating or swallowing or anything, but it’s quite uncomfortable. Any recommendations on what to do?
preg 3L
Dry mouth can be a result of either adding or stopping medication — have you recently changed birth control pills or anti-depressants or anything like that? As far as treating it, start with oral hygiene (brushing 2x/day, flossing, using mouthwash like biotene) and a humidifier!
BankrAtty
I had awful dry mouth the first few months I was on topamax. I drank water pretty much incessantly, although it didn’t solve the problem. Hard candies will help you produce more saliva. (I believe there are even candies specifically intended for dry mouth, although I am not sure why that is necessary.) Hang in there!

Interesting – I haven’t had any med changes recently, but I am on one that is designed to make me retain more sodium. Have been on it for three years now, but maybe I’ll make an appt to get my levels checked in case there’s been a change in my natural levels.

Nude for me pumps
Any suggestions on nude for me pumps for my South Asian skin (sort of Halle Berry complexion). These Cole Haan shoes come highly recommended but the color looks too light – can anyone comment?
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/cole-haan-air-chelsea-low-pump/3393645?origin=category&BaseUrl=Shoes
Also, assuming that I can’t find something my color, is it preferable to wear a “nude” shoe in a darker or lighter shade than my skin tone?
BB
I say lighter. When you wear “nude” pumps, it’s usually to match a lighter color palette (otherwise you would do dark brown or black pumps). I have East Asian skin and have some beige suede pumps that are lighter than my skin. They look great with pretty much everything that isn’t dark brown, navy, dark gray, or black.
Joanna Toews
I agree with BB. I work with a lot of stylish South Asian and Malay women. They look FANASTIC in pasty-white-person-nude pumps. Light pink works really well too, or so I’ve observed.

Kate Spade has the Karolinas or Licorice (or the Kikis, if you’re interested in wedges) in a camel patent color, which might work. Check out Piperlime. I’m half Asian (but my skin tone is more Caucasian) and they’re too dark for me, but the color might work for you.

Can someone please give me the virtual slap upside the head that I richly deserve? I am expecting my first baby this summer. We tried to get pregnant for what felt like forever. It’s everyone’s first grandchild, as well as the first great-grandchild for our living grandparents. Everyone has been appropriately over the moon. A little while ago, my brother-in-law told me that he and his fiancee planned to start trying for a baby rather than wait till their wedding, which is a good ways away still. Now I’ve learnt they’re pregnant on their first try. I have expressed the appropriate congratulations. However, in my black grinchy little heart, I am not really happy for them! I have some borderline-legit reasons relating to their relationship, which is a bit of a mess, but most of my feelings are downright pathetic (I wanted my baby to have the spotlight for more than a couple of months! Why does everyone else seem to get pregnant on their first try!) Someone just harshly tell me to get over myself? I really never thought I’d be this person.
Anonymous
I think your feelings are not that uncommon, but just focus on the excitement of you having a baby. First of all, there will be more than enough love and attention for both babies. Love multiples with babies, not divides. Second of all, you’re going to have a new niece/nephew and your baby is going to have a cousin. Yay!!! Third of all, I’m guessing they tried before their wedding cause of age? Or life circumstance? Just be happy they got so lucky and didn’t have to go through the waiting period like you did. You’re pregnant! that’s all that matters right now.
Ginjury
Get over it. Yes, it’s frustrating that it was so easy for them when you struggled, but this isn’t a zero sum game. If the little grinch in you wants something to be smug about, just remember you’re still having the first grand/great-grand baby.
tesyaa
I don’t know if this helps, but IMO it’s OK to have these feelings, as long as you never express them in any way other than totally anonymously. We can’t help our feelings, but we can help our actions. My SIL often seemed to get pregnant (with the appropriate excitement) either shortly after I announced my pregnancy or right after I gave birth. I don’t know why, but I found it annoying, yet I know for a fact she had trouble conceiving and carrying pregnancies so I should have just been happy for her.
In the bigger picture, it is so nice for kids to have cousins the same age, especially when they get older.
CKB
I agree that the feelings are OK. I was kind of in a similar situation with my first. I’d had 3 m/c and was finally expecting again, and hoping we had the medical treatment that would sustain the pg all worked out, and my bro & sil announced that they had got pg basically on their honeymoon and were due 1 week after me. And then gave birth 2 weeks early & 1 week before me.
When I first found out they were expecting I was quite upset, partly because I was worried I’d loose the pg & they’d have a successful one, and it would be really hard. And partly because it just wasn’t fair that they had such an easy time and we had a tough time.
Our kids will be turning 14 in the next couple of weeks and honestly, it doesn’t matter at all anymore. So, I completely agree with tesyaa’s advice – it’s ok to acknowledge your feelings, but don’t make your bil know you are having these feelings because almost certainly you will feel differently in a few years (if not months) and you don’t want to cause any hurt feelings in the mean time.
Sydney Bristow
This is a good point about being close in age. My cousin and I are 3 months apart. Our mothers were extremely competitive with each other growing up, which spilled over onto us a bit. Near the end of high school and in early college we realized how much we had in common and how well we got along on our own and are close to the point of sisters now. We wish we could go back and grow up that way. I think it is possible to have a great experience growing up with a cousin around the same age.
anon
Thankfully my sister is focusing on the cousin thing instead of me ruining her pregnancy/birth of first grandchild. At Christmas 2012, I told her DH and I planned to start trying in the new year. We didn’t have any luck right away and in April she called to say she was pregnant after just starting to try. Then in June I got pregnant and miscarried in July. Then I got pregnant again in September and her baby was born in December. Mine will be born in June. Neither of us got pregnancy spotlight or kid spotlight because of the similar timing. BUT our youngest sister and our cousin have been BFFs since they were like 5 years old (they’re now almost 30).
It’s definitely hard to see others get pregnant easily when it was harder for you and it’s okay to be upset initially. Just work on letting it go in the coming months and it’ll all work out.
Anon
Your feelings are definitely completely normal! It’s hard to struggle and then watch other couples who are blissfully ignorant about how hard it can be to get pregnant. As long as you aren’t creating a big public controversy with your family because of your feelings, I think it’s totally appropriate and non-grinchy to have them and share them openly with your significant other or a close friend.
hoola hoopa
I’ve been in a similar position, but the babies were born practically on the same day. Your feelings are understandable, but you shouldn’t worry. There will be plenty of excitement to spread out over two babies. My second child was third grandchild and there was still *lots* of OMG IT’S A BABY excitement. IME from my family and others is that grandparent’s well of adoration is very, very deep.
Also, there are some very real advantages of having cousins born close together. It makes turning family gatherings baby-friendly so much easier because two families will be running on the same schedule and with the same limits/preferences. We live near each other so it was easy for my parents to bounce between our homes to give us assistance and alone time. And the two cousins get to grow up together, which is fun for everyone. And someone will be there to commiserate with you rather than judge you and give you oh-so-helpful advice as only someone without children can do.
Plus, yours will still be the first-and-only for your side of the family. It’s the best of both worlds!
Miss Behaved
My cousin and I are 18 hours apart. I was born early and she was born late.
And my mother is still a bit peeved about the whole thing. She stupidly told her sister what she wanted to name me. And her sister immediately appropriated it so then she had to come up with another name. Then when my cousin was born, my aunt didn’t even use the original name. I would have much preferred that name, by the way!
And just to give you all an idea of how weird and close my family is. My mother and her sister (the one in question) married my father and his brother. So we have all the same relatives…

My cousin and I are 2 days apart; newborn roommates in the hospital even. My mom’s sister-in-law was so angry at my mother — they both wanted girls (there were boys aplenty) and my mom gave birth first and “got the girl,” as my aunt says. She says she cried because she wanted the girl, then luckily she had a girl too and my cousin and I have always been great friends, college roommates, etc. And now we have kids the same age and it is so much fun; I wish we lived closer together these days . . . I hope your babies will be friends as well as cousins! And also I recommend the Tom Chapin song, “Cousins.”

I’m not going to give you a virtual slap. It is frustrating how other people seem to get pregnant so easily. BUT, focus on the positive–a close in age cousin for your baby is an awesome thing.

Depending on family dynamics, husband’s family may feel a bit left out of things b/c wife is more comfortable confiding in her family or having her parents present for the birth but not the in-laws. If this is your situation, having another baby in husband’s family arriving around the same time may ease any left-out feelings that in-laws might have, thus easing pressure on you to include them in the pregnancy and birth to an extent that might be uncomfortable for you.

Not that you shouldn’t feel how you feel, but that might be one thing you can use to comfort yourself. The silver lining of another baby coming so soon after yours.

Recently heard this: “love doesn’t divide, it multiplies.” Maybe a good short mantra to keep in mind, in addition to all the other helpful comments. Everyone is going to be excited about both babies–one doesn’t take away from the other.

Does anyone have a cleaning service they recommend in DC? (And do you mind saying how much you pay? My place is about 650 sq ft., and is a one bedroom.)
Anon
I pay $65 for bi-weekly cleaning for a 900 sq ft apartment in DC.
Em
That sounds extremely reasonable!

I got a Gilt City deal for Handybook, which made it extra-reasonable, but I think their typical rates are reasonable as well – about $50 for bi-weekly 2 hrs of cleaning, I think. I’ve only used one of their cleaners so far but she was great.

This lady is amazing despite her ridiculous website: http://www.liliscleaning.com/ She’s also really good about email/texting which I appreciate, since I’m not a phone person. But mostly she’s just an amazing housecleaner.
Anon
I pay $50 for once a month cleaning of a studio.
CapHillAnon
I pay $85 for biweekly. House is 1200 sq feet.

Thank you, everyone!

Another smoothie question. For those who take smoothies to work, what sort of cup/container do you use?
Ginjury
I just use one of those insulated tumblers from Starbucks. Some days, I’ll put it in a thermos and pour it in a cup at work.
Miz Swizz
A mason jar. I walk to work and having it in a completely enclosed container works so much better than trying to wrestle a tumbler and my bags.
rosie
I was thinking about mason jars, since we have them around for canning. I just ordered some plastic screw-top lids. Do you have a particular lid that you like?

I use this, and I absolutely love it. Get lots of compliments too!

Belated thanks!

Not a good one. Green smoothie all over my keyboard and chair last week.

A Klean Kanteen. Most other containers will spill.

Blender bottles don’t leak. (I don’t even use them for the blender ball function).

Thanks, all!

Motherhood and career advice needed!
I have a toddler and recently took up a new position which was a big step up for me in terms of responsibilities (larger team reporting to me, leadership role, etc.). We were planning to start trying for a second child very shortly, but due to the change in role I’m wondering how long I need to put things on hold.
Concerns: (1) about how it appears if I get pregnant so soon after I start, I don’t want to seem uncommitted (2) My toddler was not, and still isn’t, a good sleeper or eater and falls sick the usual amount so my first year back at work I was barely keeping it together. I can’t really coast in my new role the way I could before. (3) My first took a few months of trying and I don’t want to leave it too late with my second, though I know it could take more or less.
hoola hoopa
How it is perceived depends heavily on office culture, so YMMV. In a family-friendly environment, no one should suspect that you are uncommitted so long as you keep up at work and continue discussing future plans and keeping a long forecast in your work. IME people will straight-up ask if you plan to continue working, you will say “absolutely,” and that will be the end of it aside from planning your maternity leave.
Your next baby may be the same but they could be completely different. The same could be true of TTC. What I can tell you with certainty is that being pregnant while having a toddler is *exhausting.* Definitely get your feet under you at work, but my gut is to take the plunge once you feel like you’re maintaining at work because after the initial learning curve plateaus it’s probably not going to get any easier.

Snif. I miss wearing heels. I would be all over some high-heeled dark purple mary janes.
It’s been 3 months since I sprained my ankle and it STILL bothers me. Wah.

Advice needed!!
Where should I park a growing sum of money that I am socking away for a down payment? At the rate I’m saving and considering the amount of house I want to buy, I will probably need to cash out 2-3 years. CD? MMA? Money market mutual fund? High-yield savings account I don’t know about? STOCK MARKET?? I’m not opposed… I am so sick of living in this $*itty apartment.

To Parfait: Just back in heels after 11 months post broken ankle with related soft tissue damage. To get back in 3.5 in heels took patience and physical therapy. You have to actually do the exercises they give you for homework! Time alone doesn’t heal, it just makes scar tissue.
Parfait
I have been doing my exercises. it’s just taking a long long long time to heal. And I only have like 2 pairs of shoes I can wear and it is making me whiny. snif.
