Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We are loving this faux wrap dress from Lafayette 148 New York. It strikes us as flattering, modest, and hip — and something as simple as a change of accessories would take it from a day at work to a night on the town. It's $348 at Nordstrom. Love it!

That was my first reaction as well — but then I saw the price tag, and the over exaggerated collar – combined w/ the big belt that might be a little too Judy Jetson-esque for me!
Clerky
Very cute but wayyyyyy too expensive.
Speaking of Nordstrom, they just put a ton of stuff on sale, including many of the items that Kat has featured in past posts. I just bought the pin stripe black skirt and the high waisted wool pencil skirt.

Nordstrom’s half yearly sale starts Wednesday!
Miriam
Thanks for the heads up. I’m starting my first summer internship and really need to stock up on things. Esp. shoes!
AIMS
I’m not sure I would wear this to work. It reminds me of a high fashion take on a waitress uniform or something along those lines. Plus the belt is a tad too on the dominatrix side for my workplace.
But please do keep the wrap dresses coming though! :)
lawDJ
I love everything but the price. I especially love that they have it in navy. I have decided I can’t buy any more black dresses, I have over 10, and more than half are for work.
KelliJ
When I clicked over to the Nordstrom site, I thought it was such a relief to see they had it in Navy. I love Navy, and there’s just not enough of it out there. There are way too many dresses that only come in black (and I own several as well.)
I just can’t pay that price for a simple dress.
Shayna
I like navy, but I get caught on the shoes/accessories part — I have a bunch of pairs of black shoes in varying heel heights and styles, and cardigans, etc., but there aren’t a lot of navy shoes (especially navy shoes that don’t look extremely matronly), and when it comes to jackets/cardigans, white looks too nautical, and trying to match shades of navy is impossible.
lawDJ
I usually wear gray pumps and cardis for this issue. Also nude pumps and beige cardis or jackets.
Cat
with navy, I usually do nude pumps. And tons of colors look fantastic with navy — lavender, creamy yellows, pinks/peaches, tangerine…
KelliJ
I just bought these wonderful Tory Burch Espadrilles in Navy and can’t wait to wear them! (I’m a solo so there’s no dress code in my office.)

Mondays are tough because the items are usually incredibly cute, but totally impractically priced. I guess that’s why it’s called Splurge Monday. I think a cheaper version of this faux wrap definitely exists somewhere.
housecounsel
Love it, especially in navy, but I will stalk it and hope it goes on sale.
RoadWarriorette
I’m with you! I love it, and think it would be incredibly flattering on my curvy body. Waiting for the sale!!!

Like it!
The high collar/wrap aspect with the big belt reminds me of a kimono.
Cat
Like it, especially that the sleeves are longer than cap length… though I am curious what the sleeves do when your arms are just down at your sides. The material looks substantial enough that they might stand out farther than I’d like. Definitely worth a try-on.
A.
I actually like the belt more than the dress.
anon
I love it, but not for $348
But I’ll add it to my list of stuff to look for at Nordstrom Rack!
Lawgirl
This is very dull, IMHO. I’ve been stalking this stylish silk one at Anne Klein — over $100 less than this cotton LF148: http://www.anneklein.com/Shirt-Dress/90364665,default,pd.html?cgid=90330696&itemNum=7&variantSizeClass=&variantColor=JJ4FAXX

I must admit, that is a very interesting alternative and I love that it has long sleeves. I’m still not loving the price though =-(

Cute dress, too much money for what it is though.
Thread hijack — there has been some discussion on body shape on this site and I recently discovered a great site that features real women’s bodies and gives tips on what type of body shape the woman has. No affiliation to the site, I swear. I always thought I was a pear but am now wondering if I’m an X (hourglass)….

Reminds me of a great style book I bought a little while back, Pocket Stylist. Goes through various body types and best way to dress each. One of the better fashion books I’ve read, though some of the advice re measuring clothes on the racks is a little too intense for me.
A.
LOVE LOVE LOVE The Pocket Stylist. It totally changed the way I buy clothes.

I sometimes buy clothes at a site (no affiliation here either) called MyShape. You put in all your measurements and they tell you what shape you are and which of their clothes would look good on you (and fit). The measuring process takes a while and some of their clothes I don’t like, but I have found, for example, that Calvin Klein dresses look great on me.
Emily I
I’ve used MyShape, too. I wore a shirt I ordered from there today, as a matter of fact. It is incredibly flattering on me. The nice part – especially since it’s online shopping., which often means dealing with returns for things that don’t fit – is that it automatically plugs in the size you should buy based on the measurements you’ve entered at the beginning of the whole process. The shirt I’m wearing today is actually a small, and I never would have ordered a small myself (usually I’m in the medium range). It looks fantastic, though. I really hope they get some more brands on board.
Legally Brunette
I signed up for that site but don’t love any of the clothes featured on there. They need to feature a greater diversity of brands before they’ll get me to buy anything. I think it’s a wonderful concept though.
1L (Summer) NYC
I am confused — how can you figure out what shape your are? Do you take measurements?
Legally Brunette
Yes, you should measure your shoulders, bust, waist and hip circumference.
If your hips are 5% or more greater than your shoulders and you have a defined waist = pear
If your hips are roughly the size of your shoulders and you have a defined waist = hourglass
If your shoulders are 5% or more greater than hips = inverted triangle
If you’re straight up and down with not much of a waist = rectangle
That’s what I learned from various books that I’ve read, but I’m no expert.

Thread hijack –
Can anyone recommend a beige colored ballet flat? I used to have some from Nine West that are now (post kid #2) too small. I have a big forefoot but narrow heels. I tried the Lands End Canvas ballet flat recommended here last week, but it is too big in the heel and I was walking out of them.
KelliJ
I don’t have a recommendation on shoes, but maybe you could try heal grips, the little inserts you put in the back of your shoes to provide that little something extra so you don’t walk out of your shoes. I have to admit that I’ve used them in the past with varying degrees of success, but they might work for you.
Good luck!
Cat
If your skin has pinkish undertones, j.crew’s might work – I find they start molding to your foot shape nicely. http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/shoes/ballets/PRDOVR~21412/21412.jsp
also Delman’s Mona – it has elastic around the heel, which might help you keep it on your foot: http://delmanshoes.com/mona-camel-crinkle-patent–14238
CL
Ooh…careful with that elastic around the heel though. Several friends of mine have bought flats with that and by the end of the day it’s extremely painful because the elastic starts cutting into the back of your heel.
anon
I wear Mona flats almost daily and have never had this pain. Make sure you get the right size!
Law-Less
I recently bought these:
http://www.naturalizer.com/Shopping/ProductDetails.aspx?p=EC0203087&pg=3006560
They seem to be made for people with exactly the type of foot that you describe, wider in the front and narrow in the heel. I like them!
L
Thanks all!
F
Love my Delman Mona flats, but please buy a half size up, the patent leather’s pretty stiff and they are very tight.
CL
But I just checked the link and it looks like the elastic on the shoes the poster recommended is on the sides of the heel so nevermind. (but i still say to watch out for the flats with the elastic on the back–like on your achilles tendon–it does not feel good!)
jcb
Very true – the Tory Burch revas look comfy and cute, but the elastic back kills my heels. I have to put on a preventative band-aid prior to use.
Emma
Don’t know about beige-colored ballet flats, per se, but Ecco also says they design shoes for this foot shape. I recently bought a pair, and they really are comfortable on the wide forefoot and narrow heel.

I have a couple of very similar black dresses that I havent worn because I havent found the right belt. It cant be too spendy. Im a size 10, and a bit busty. Any suggestions? Im new to “accesorizing”.
Anonymous
ooh, thanks for the link to insideoutstyle. Im for sure an H and I love the suggestions for wearing a belt for that shape.
Legally Brunette
I’m glad! Yeah, I found it super helpful, particularly to see real life women’s shapes.

I think that at this price a dress should be lined! From the picture, I could not clearly see the style, but it looked a little bit “tricky”. Cuffed short sleeves can be a bit of a problem.
Liz
Actually, I think I like the belt a lot more than the rest of the dress.

Did you see this bit about Elena Kagan and her “dowdy” style in the Washington Post? Here is the link
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/21/AR2010052101670.html
Rather than get all up in arms about the sexist nature of her being judged for her appearance I take it as a lesson that no matter how smart or qualified we are, we are still judged in part on our outfits. Which is why we need Corporette!
Anon
Another lesson (from the photo accompanying article) – beware the skirt that hits above your knee when you’ll be sitting anywhere other than behind your desk. Even if you cross your legs, you will be giving anyone opposite you a nice view up the side of your thigh (see: woman in red skirt). No thanks!
eem
What is up with the bizarre caption for the photo: “UNUSUAL: Most women, including Sen. Amy Klobuchar, cross their legs when sitting, but not Kagan”?
Delta Sierra
I think they’re just desperate for something to say.
Legally Brunette
What an interesting article. Women have and will probably always be judged at least in part on how we look and what we wear. I agree that the article had an unnatural focus on the fact that she didn’t cross her legs. I mean, is that a mortal sin or something? I agree it looks a little strange, but not as bad as the Post makes it out to be.
KZ
that was bizarre. And leg crossing definitely not a mortal seem. I think crossing legs is actually a fairly recent thing–I seem to recall someone somewhere saying it’s more “ladylike” to cross at your ankles, or not at all.

Robin Givhan has criticized pretty much everyone in Washington, and it’s always a fun read. She’s so mean, though!
