For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. I am loving this suit in “rouge noir” from BOSS Black. It strikes me as a really unusual color — a bit of a purpley brown — but one that isn't so wild and wacky that you can't wear it to important meetings. I wish the jacket's front pockets were functional, but so it goes. The jacket (BOSS Black Two Button Jacket) is $595, the skirt (BOSS Black Pencil Skirt) is $275, and the pants (BOSS Black ‘Tirana' Trousers) are $325, all available at Nordstrom.Sales of note for 9.30.24

I don’t love the flare on the pants, but that suit is otherwise gorgeous.
Kelly
I love that color and it looks stunning on the redhead model. I’d def wear it, but I think with coloring (brown/black hair, brow eyes, warm mediumish skin) it would pick up more of the brown tones.
Research, Not Law
Redhead here and I’m loving the color!

Love. New Year’s Resolution: rework budget and spending habits to allow for purchase of beautiful $1200 suits.
Herbie
Also: get college body back, eat healthfully at all times, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, drink more water and less booze (mmm… booze…), keep house cleaner and clothes more picked up and less piled at foot of bed, recycle more (or at all).
This is the year we finally do it!
RR
Your list looks like mine!
MissJackson
Amen. I recycle, but otherwise, you’ve adequately articulated everything I ought to be working on. I’d add: find a decent-wage job that doesn’t suck the will to live out of me.
Anonymous
Ha! I only aspire to stop cursing so much since my pre-teen has picked up the bad habit.
meara
Hah! This is pretty much my resolutions. Except the recycling, because I already do that. I even compost–it’s required here! If only the “exercise and keep house clean and eat healthfully” were as easy!
TechAnon
meara, are you in Minneapolis? When I visited that city, I was amazed at their commitment to composting .
meara
Nope, in Seattle. I didn’t have to compost when I was in an apartment, but now that I own a home, I do. But they provide the compost container and pick it up weekly, so it’s only a matter of me not being too lazy to take out the trash (slightly more annoying when it’s three separate bags–compost, recycling, and trash!)

Lose the 5 pounds I put on after law school, and find a job. Save more money. I drink entirely too much right now, but that’s my release for frustration in job search. Oh and take better care of my hair so I can grow it out.
Bonnie
This. And somehow find time to volunteer.
Anon
Lose 5-7 pounds so various clothing fits again.
Resuming running (for its own benefits, but see above.)
Declutter like a professional decluttering maven.
Develop organizational system so that stress of 2011 does not become the new black.
Set and pursue various career goals.
Get used road bike. :)
S
I love your “Develop organizational system so that stress of 2011 does not become the new black.” That now tops my list!
Anonymous
We should hang out. We’d either kick all of our bad habits together, or blissfully enable one another over some good booze!
Eleanor
I love this idea. Herbie’s list is mine exactly, except that I generally recycle, and I really need to clean the hair off my bathroom sink on a much more regular basis.
Diana Barry
I love these. Reminds me of Bridget Jones except much more high-powered.
My list:
Have husband do more chores as I become more pregnant.
Have baby #3.
Try to get sleep.
Organize clothes for children so they do not try to wear things that are too small.
Quit job.
Hang out shingle.
Begin exercising again (argh).
Lose some baby weight.
There are many more I could put!!!

It would be really interesting to have a big discussion about new years resolutions/things to accomplish in 2012 where people who have succeeded at one of your goals could give advice on how they did so. My list is getting long and I’m trying to narrow it down to things I can actually accomplish with specific components to meet in order to reach each one. Maybe this is a sign that I should stop listening to podcasts with Tim Ferriss as the guest…

I once tried a BOSS suit on in charcoal grey. It was the most gorgeous suit ever. I have never come so close to spending so much on clothing. I still dream about that suit. Sigh.
If my body size stayed somewhat constant, I’d buy this in a second. No questions.
Amelia
I agree about the body size comment. I’d also buy something like this if I could count on wearing it for more than 2 seasons.
Amelia
I really like this suit. Although it does look a little bit shiny, but I’d have to see in person.
MLG
I agree. This suit is incredible.
MelD
I love this suit. Anyone else having issues with the suit images? I am using FF 8 and the images of the suit are gigantic.
AIMS
Lovely!
RR
This is absolutely gorgeous. Want. So. Much.
On a happier, non-covetous note, I hunted down the elusive (for me) Stuart Weitzman kitten heel tortoise shell shoes. They should be at my door today. Fingers crossed that they fit!
Nancy P
Ooh! Hope they work. I have higher tortoise shell SW’s and love them. So chic.
JJ
Good luck! I have tortoise shell Cole Haans that I wear all.the.time. They’re surprisingly versatile!
Marie Curie
Yay! I love my Stuart Weitzmans which I got on ebay thanks to corporette.

I saw this suit online and loved it…and then saw it in store and poof! desire gone. The fabric IRL is not as nice as it appears in the pictures.

I have a question for HR corporettes.
I was hired in the spring for a job with in the federal goverment, which is like wild West when it comes to employee rights. When I was hired, I was told there was no flexibility in the budget to negotiate my salary BUT because the position I was filling had been open for several months, I would get part of these funds as an end of year bonus. There are two people in my department (a supervisor and myself) and we would split it. Well, my supervisor has been mum about bonuses for the past month, so I approached her to see if a decision had been made. Her response was that it wasn’t her decision and that it was a sore subject. Hmm.
Would it be appropriate to talk to our program head about this? It wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but we’re talking about 20k and since its a small department, I don’t want to ruin the relationship with my only coworker. Suggestions?
Anonymous
We get any bonus or award at end of fiscal year. In our fed office, this would be a moot point and not wise to bring up. The new year has begun for a couple of months and the old year money is gone.
Social Etiquette Fail
A sign that reads “DO NOT DISTURB” on the door of a woman who just came back from six weeks of maternity leave really should indicate that knocking on her door just to wish her a belated happy birthday and ask her about her holiday plans is a bad idea…
Did not happen to me – just next to me. Oops.
SF Bay Associate
Pumping, I assume?
Social Etiquette Fail
Yes. And the knocker was a woman! Ah well, the woman handled it as gracefully as possible.
JJ
Some people are just absolutely clueless (and usually harmlessly) as they go about their day. This is why I’m thinking a “Do Not Disturb” sign just won’t cut it when pumping.
MeliaraofTlanth
Yea, probably not. Door locks might be important (or if your office doesn’t have locks, those door jam things you stick under the knob)
Always a NYer
Doorstops that are used for keeping doors open are also really good for keeping the door closed ;)
Research, Not Law
This explains the “PUMPING” sign (yes, it was in all caps) a coworker had when I started. I thought it was a bit TMI, but now I see why…
I hope the woman knocking learned her lesson. I had another pumping mom walk in on me by accident once in the pumping room. It was embarrassing enough.
Blonde Lawyer
I think the blunt “pumping” sign is the way to go. At my old firm I saw some backlash to a “do not disturb” sign when the partner didn’t “get” what it meant. His reaction suggested he was the partner and could disturb associates whenever he wanted. I also saw other associates put off by it thinking “geez, I’m as busy as her but I still let people come ask me questions.” So many people didn’t realize “do not disturb” meant pumping. Sadly, there are probably some people out there that don’t even know what pumping would mean. I could see one person in particular saying “pumping what? out a brief?” Maybe a giant sign that said “pumping breast milk” – do not enter would really get the job done. Kidding of course.
Anonymous
I would not want to pump or breastfeed in front of my boss, but I am not clear about why it is SUCH an embarrassment. Women routinely breastfeed in public. Why wouldn’t you just be blunt on the sign about what you are doing? And, what is the big deal if a woman walks in on you? She has boobs, too.
CSF
I think bluntness is probably fine. But I couldn’t in my office, because I am directly across from our two conference rooms. Which means there are always attorneys from other firms, mediators, court reporters, and clients right outside my door (or at the very least walking by it). I couldn’t take the chance that any of that group would be offended or disturbed by the sign. (they shouldn’t be, but you never no).
When the time comes, I will likely send out a firm wide email (we’re small enough and close-knit enough), that simply asks someone to knock before they enter, or else they’re going to get an eyefull of something they do not want.
Nancy P
So what colors would people wear under this suit, besides black / white / cream? I am seriously considering this as a much-needed end to Shopping Hiatus.
Herbie
It’s brown right? I always loved cranberry with my brown suit.
Eleanor
It’s brown right? I always loved cranberry with my brown suit.
Kady
The right coral.
MelD
I think this color is extremely versatile and would work with plum, cranberry, burnt orange, coral, and most pastels.
Nonny
Mustard yellow.
terri
Cream all the way.
conbrio
This suit is stunning. Woods-comma-Elle, you should get it to go with your new hair color!

Can anyone suggest a good online source for personalized stationary? I’m buying for a female friend for personal use.
I’m confident this has been addressed before, but my research of prior corporette threads was unsuccessful.
Alex
I haven’t ordered any, but I’ve seen walnut paperie recommended and it looks pretty nice.
ks
I like classiccommunication dot com . Their embossed note cards are heavyweight, elegant and very reasonable. Been ordering for years for self and gifts, never disappointed.
LA
I just ordered from classiccommunication based on the recommedation I received here — the stationery arrived quickly and looks great. Thanks for the advice!
a.k.
I am a fan of Silhouette Blue stationery. She has a very fresh but feminine aesthetic. I’ve ordered for myself and given as gifts – always well-received. Note that it is printed, not letterpress, so it is more affordable.
yesh
Minted.com has some great options.
Diana Barry
I have ordered from Crane’s before. Nice hefty paper, nice feeling, pretty envelope linings.
MJ
Crane’s is the gold standard. I do not care for the quality of expressionary. It is printed but not embossed and lacked gravitas and heft (which I think is important for nice stationary, as opposed to casual notes).

Argh! Brand new J.Crew cashmere sweater, the buttons are falling off already!
ss
I have 2-month old J Crew sweater, pilling !! FWIW Uniqlo’s cashmere seems to hold up much better.
An
Agree! My Uniqlo cashmere looks great after two years of regular wear.
terri
I guess if you look like the model, you can pull off sweat pants in the office…
