Just back home. Raving about the food, view, and service at “Granite” in downtown St. John’s … next to the Marriott Courtyard.
We had changeable weather, as you predicted. It was good enough for time at Signal Hill (surprised that we were there for the noon signaling … didn’t know, just lucky), boat trip out of Bay Bulls, and long walks around the MUN garden in surban St. John’s.
Yes, we’d go back. The only frustration was the changing street names and lack of street signs.
No worries. Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed!
Ugh. I think this dress is terrible. I think it looks ripped and if Im going to be closing the slash all the time, why have it in the first place. Also, I think a shoulder purse would pull it open awkwardly. I’m going to leave the cutouts for the coeds, esp asymmetric ones.
Agreed-It looks awkward and not deliberate
Also agreed. This looks terribly unflattering even on the model. Awful and cheap looking. And, to think, I thought yesterday’s suit was terrible . . . .
Also agreed. It looks very unflattering on the model. I can’t tell if it’s the way she’s standing or the dress, but I’m pretty sure it’s the dress.
+1. Also the ruching looks like it is pulling awkwardly.
I love it and want this dress in 7 colors!
It looks like you could open the slash to nurse a baby.
That was my first thought as well.
Can we talk about nails?
How much do you spend on your nails/upkeep? Do you do them yourself? Go weekly to the salon? Go natural? What’s the norm in your office–all neutrals or bold colors?
Hands: Natural and I keep them tidy with some basic manicure tools.
Toes: 1-2 pedicures a year. Otherwise, I do fun bold colors myself. I wear close toed shoes at work, so I like having bright blue nails with my flip flops on weekends.
I get pedicures regularly (every 3 weeks?) during the summer but not as much during the winter, only occasionally.
I do my fingernails myself some of the time and then get manicures for special occasions (birthday, weddings I am going to, etc.), but I would guess my nails are only polished 1/3 of the time.
In my office – very few women attorneys, most of them have nothing or red. I am the most ‘out there’ with colors when I get them done.
Approximately $20/year to replace worn out buff blocks. I don’t get manicures – I trim, trim cuticles, buff nails, etc. myself. They are always short, neat, presentable. Same with toenails.
I probably get a manicure/pedicure once every 3-4 years as part of some group event (bachelore**e party or similar).
Polished nails is just not my jam. Takes too long and I’m too OCD to put up with chips (which come quickly because I’m very active).
I have a manicure and pedicure every 2-3 weeks. My pedicure lasts between appointments, but my manicure doesn’t, so I paint my nails (and do a bit of filing and hang nail cleanup when necessary)in between. I do about 50/50 neutral grey/pink/taupe and brighter colours like red/fucshia/purple but stay away from neon shades.
In my industry (law) it’s pretty age-dependent. I’d say younger women most often have their nails painted trendy colours (but no glitter, jewels or nail art) and older women most often have their nails bare.
I do a gel mani (like Shellac but different brand) in the salon generally every two weeks, occasionally I stretch it to three, but only if my nails were cut really short and they still look good. That costs $65 ($50 plus tax plus tip) at a high end salon where I know the staff are being paid and treated well. Getting Shellac is very popular in my office – people generally do either neutral or bold, but stick to traditional bold colours (so very hot pink is fine, as is very dark navy or black but neon green or bright blue is out).
I get pedis less frequently. Once a month in the summer and only if I’m going on vacation in the winter. That’s the same price.
So overall, I spend slightly less than $2000 a year on nails. It seems insane but I am not otherwise a super splurge-y person (i.e. I shape my own eyebrows and I don’t own expensive handbags) and I really, really enjoy getting and having my nails done all the time. Having Shellac done and never having chips, uneven nails or anything but perfect nails really just removes one more concern from my at home grooming tasks.
Bare fingernails that I keep as short as possible, and painted toenails. I only get pedicures if people are going as part of an event, so I can’t say how much I spend per year–between 30-100 depending on how often it comes up. Otherwise, I buy between 3-5 new polish colors per year and paint my toenails myself. I always think about how nice it is to get pedicures but then I end up not wanting to spend the money. Late 20’s lawyer.
I do them myself in whatever color I want. Including green/blue/blacks. No one in my office cares. For court or impt meetings I go more toned down.
I’m in BigLaw. I do my fingernails and toenails myself the vast majority of the time (just not something I feel like spending money on, and I feel weird about the service aspect of it). I have on occasion gotten manicures or pedicures with friends when it’s something they really wanted to do. My toes are painted %100 of the time (I hate the look of bare toenails for some reason); I do them maybe every 2-3 weeks or whenever it starts chipping. My nails are painted most of the time, but when I get crazy busy at work I’ll forgo it, since it usually only lasts a week before looking sloppy. I personally stick to red/pink/coral because I’m pretty traditional, but I’ve seen much more out-there colors in my office (blue, orange, etc.). I usually buy nicer polish (Essie and OPI). Most of my coworkers have polished nails and many of them get regular manicures.
I get a mani/pedi every 2 weeks. I have the salon use the OPI Infinite Shine on my toes – it doesn’t require anything special to remove it but it keeps it from rubbing off from daily pointed toe heel wearing. I get the nexgen manicure – which is a dipped acrylic powder thing that’s magic. No chips, no breaks, and they don’t have to scrape my nailbed to get it off like with gel. When I was a partner in a law firm, I stuck with nude/pink/red primarily for my nails. Now that I’m in-house in the beauty business, I really just do whatever looks pretty to me that day. Right now, it’s a muted blue-grey; I think the last color was white.
Forgot the pricing. $95 + $40 tip (20/person) twice a week, so around $3500/year.
Where on earth do you live? That’s insanely expensive.
Dallas. It’s $45 for the nexgen manicure, then $45 for the pedicure (with mud wrap and paraffin) and $5 upcharge for the OPI Infinite Shine polish.
I’ve never heard of this. Interesting.
I would think, being in your niche industry, this is almost a deductible expense!
But the cost gave me seizure…. oh my oh my….
I freaking love the nexgen. And the cost looks so much scarier when I see it multiplied out for the year.
But I do make up for it by getting all of my hair stuff at 20% less wholesale price (and sometimes free from vendors or at hair shows). New GHD flat iron for $45? Yes, please. Liters of Kenra Platinum shampoo and conditioner for $7 each? Even better.
I do my nails myself. I paint my toenails once a month in the Summer (less in the Winter). I do at home gel manicures about once every 10 days, but will occasionally go a week or so with nothing on them. I have a few bright red/berry/coral colors, but mostly do nude. They rarely chip (I just peel them off when they start to wear down), but if they do, the nude is less noticeable. I bought the light and all the supplies a year ago for about $100 total.
Which brand/light did you buy? I think I should get at home gel too.
I have acrylic nails (for almost 18 months now), for which I go to the salon to have fills and a new clear gel manicure done about every 2 weeks. When I’ve just done the gel, I have managed to crack it in under 48 hours. If I go natural, my nails break & peel back into the quick.
I get a pedicure about every 4 weeks at the same salon. I started that last summer, then realized last winter that it was about the only thing keeping me on my feet before I had foot surgery. I’ve kept doing it once I healed up from the surgery just because it is a nice stress relief. I enjoy sitting in the massage chair and
I’m the only one in my office who has acrylics, but almost all of us wear polish of some sort. The official policy is that it has to be translucent enough to be able to “visualize any dirt or debris”, but in administrative offices no one really pays attention to it unless someone’s hands are so dirty that it is obvious. Actual care providers (health system) have to have short nails without polish when they’re on duty.
Gel mani + regular polish pedi every two weeks. Non-negotiable. $72 plus $30 tip
I have my nails professional pedicured once a month April through September. I’m not as flexible as I used to be (50+) otherwise I’d do it myself. Bare toenails in winter.
I have very steady hands, so I do my manicure myself – weekly, usually on Thursday evenings (so they look nicest for the weekend). Bright and unusual colors are OK in my office, so I usually just choose what strikes me at the time. Never nail art, though.
Hands: Gel mani. My nails are fragile enough that if I go with normal polish (or heaven forbid nothing at all) they chip and tear and are generally destroyed if I so much as look at the corner of a filing cabinet. I can usually stretch the gel two weeks at a go, and it’s one of my payday mini-splurges. I tend to go for cheerful colors – coral, teal, right now it’s a pale pink with shimmer. Tip 20%, no matter what.
Feet: Proper manicure every month during the summer, maaaaaybe once or twice during the whole winter season. Bright colors all the way – right now my toes are an almost acid purple. If it’s wintertime and I just want to keep my toenails from cutting through my socks, I’ll do it myself and put on some polish, and I have a home foot-peel that I do every five or six months that literally makes layers of calluses peel off like snakeskin. It’s the most disgustingly fun thing ever :)
Can you share the name of the home foot-peel? That sounds awesomely horrifying, and I want it!!
It’s probably Baby Foot Peel! So gross, but so great.
Pedicures monthly in the summer, about every six weeks in the winter. I keep my nails pretty short because I am a destructive typer and do most of the repairs around the house, which means they get junky quickly. I’ve been using Jamberry decals on and off for the last six months and am pretty happy with them, but not always disciplined enough to do the 20 minutes of work. They last about 10 days for me.
Related question – I love gel manis and started using Sally Hansen’s No-Light gel, which lasts chip-free for a week. After a few weeks with the gel on my nails, every single one of my nails will break off, like they’re dry and brittle. Is this from the gel? Is there something I can do to prevent this ? I’ve used CND Solar Oil before but not recently. Would using that on the edges of the nail help?
I have the weakest, most brittle fingernails of all time, so after spending most of my life with horribly stubby, ragged nails because they would constantly break or tear, I bit the bullet and started getting acrylics so I wasn’t constantly embarrassed by my hands. I keep them pretty short and relatively natural looking. Fills for my nails are anywhere from $22-$30 every 2-3 weeks. I’ve been going to the same manicurist for the last 4 years and stayed with her while she changed salons a few times and ultimately opened her own, so she gives me a pretty good deal. I also get a pedicure every 4-6 weeks, which is $18 + tip.
Also see the conversation from last week/2 weeks ago – someone suggested Zoya’s natural nail kit which I’m dying to try.
On Sundays, I give myself a manicure with Sally no light gel polish. Subdued colors when I’m in trial and crazier colors otherwise. I get pedicures about once a month during the summer.
So last year or so we posted about how much we spend per year on beauty regimen overall. After reviewing the other answers, I had one of the highest amounts! So, I cut back on some things. I get a pedi about 3 times per year, no polish, just buffed. I get a mani about once a month or less. It’s $20 including tip and it lasts about a week. Otherwise I use a cuticle brush thing from sephora and cut and file them myself. I don’t usually polish them myself but I would for a special occasion if I couldn’t get into the salon.
So ~$300 per year including toes and supplies?
My office varies but to be honest, I don’t notice stuff like that. Most other attorneys I see at proceedings have french or a solid color on shorter nails if I had to say.
Maybe $8-12/year, if I buy a new bottle of nail polish or remover that year? I paint my toes every month or so in the summer, sometimes in the winter, and that that’s it. Just trim my nails regularly (or bite them if it’s a stressful time).
Pedicure maybe 3 times a year. Otherwise paint toes maybe once a month? Cut nails as needed, and put on lotion every time I wash my hands. So maybe $100/year?. I find it hard to believe that I’m so far outside the mainstream, but maybe the people answering are those that care more about hands/nails?
I don’t think this site and its commenters are an accurate representation of the “mainstream” in any sense of that word, with respect to any topic discussed here. Which is neither a good thing nor a bad thing – it’s just a fact.
Trying for the third time (Kat this moderation thing is getting really tiresome…)
I don’t think that C—-tte and the people who frequent it are an accurate representation of the “mainstream” in any sense of that word, with respect to any topic discussed here. Which is neither a good thing nor a bad thing – it’s just a fact.
Also, what is even mainstream on this site w/ respect to readers and commenters? I’d love to see a breakdown of demographics of readers – field, formal/casual office atmosphere (suburbs/downtown), seniority level, age/years of experience, geography…
Kat, have you ever done a survey? I know ad clicks can tell you a lot but it would be enlightening for me as a reader to know who else visits this site.
I avoid spending the money and the time going to a salon. I do it all myself, unless I’m going with friends as an activity. I also get worried about sanitation and the treatment of the workers.
I do them myself. I paint my nails weekly, but at this point ignore my feet as they are a hopeless cause due to running. I would say I buy probably 10 – 15 new bottles of polish a year (at $8-$10), 10 nail files, five bottles of nail polish remover, and endless cotton balls. Over all probably $200/year.
Color wise, I always end up on the neutral end even though I buy some crazy colors hoping I will try them. I never paint my toes (when I do) any shade that could resemble fungus, so the toes are usually pink/red/nude. In heavy rotation at my house are the following Essie colors: Tuck it in my Tux, Chinchilly, Ballet Slippers, Mademoiselle, Sand Tropez, Topless & Barefoot . . . you get the idea. I will occasionally do a fuchsia or a bright red as well. My office is casual for that sort of thing so it’s my own hangup.
I need to buy the bridal nude collection as I am sure I would use all of those colors on the regular.
I give myself a manicure every Sunday night – soak, push cuticles back, file and shape, and polish. It takes a while but it’s relaxing to me and makes me feel ready for the week. I’ve perfected my technique over the years, and now hate to get my (finger)nails done because I can do it better than anyone (except gel, but that is too hard for me to remove). I do my toes once a month or when they get bad – I will pay for someone to do that occasionally because I am not as good at it, and it lasts longer. I don’t know how much I spend, but I tend to use Essie polishes in a range of neutrals and bold (but pink/red/purple bold, not blue or green) and the Seche Vite top coat.
Gel polish every 2 weeks, $30 w/manicure, $20 to remove polish and change color, without full mani.
Pedi every month (may skip a few winter months); $30
Tips are in addition, so total of ~$1000/yr plus tips.
Gel manicure, approximately every two weeks, approx $35. No pedicure. Absolutely worth it, they look good and I never have to worry about them chipping.
More women here go natural or subdued with colors, but no one blinks if you go bright pink either.
I go natural. I sometimes remember to do something but that is usually worse because it chips a lot and looks bad very quickly. The last time I got a manicure was for my wedding. I actually don’t notice other people’s nails, so I don’t know what they do.
I am in biglaw.
Mani pedi 2x per month. Total cost 100 per month/1200 p.a. All inclusive.
There’s no tipping in my country, you can if you want to but not common and not expected.
I do my own nails because I save money and think I do a better job than most salons because I take more time to make sure the polish dries between coats. Lately I have been using Zoya Naked Manicure per a recommendation here and I think it makes my nails look natural but better.
Sorry, this was meant as a reply for the nails thread above.
The leader of my small organization recently told me ‘jokingly’ that the reason she called me a nickname was because I am “Young and dumb”. My boss who was in the same room seemed to know all about this. HR is a joke here, and the leader has a long history of this type of comment to other people that has never been reported. Obviously I am moving on and am shoring up my resume, but any advice how to handle this? On one hand I want to burn all the bridges when I leave and tell HR everything that has happened to me here (there is a laundry list of things my boss and the leader has done), but at the same time that means I am burning all bridges. I am looking to move into a different industry with jobs that have a similar skill set, but not the exact same job FWIW. There are other people at my organization that have said they will give me a good recommendation for my current job search.
Never torch your bridges. Tell all the crap to a therapist. It would feel good in the moment to tell off everyone in your exit interview, but the world is too small to take the risk. Move on, do great things, and let that be your best revenge.
I was once told, when requesting a well-deserved title change, that I was already doing so well for my age. Exit interview was thanks & smiles. Your option here is to find a new place.
While the phrase young & dumb is completely inappropriate to refer to a subordinate, it is a regular catch-phrase and I don’t think they are exactly trying to suggest you are unintelligent. Just that they don’t value you equally because of your age… (not any better)…
My boss at a small non-profit (v. unprofessional setting) once told me while we were walking back from a team lunch (with the whole team), that I didn’t really deserve it because I was being disagreeable but I was getting a 5% raise and paused for my reaction… She also told me I was a “diamond in the rough” and needed polishing, which she acknowledged was a backhanded compliment.
The only thing you can do in these types of situations is move on and show them how valuable you can be to another organization.
A competitor, if possible.
Yep! Thanks for all the contacts, see ya!
Reminds me of Louis C.K.’s bit that you are dumb if you’re younger. Obviously just a joke but agree that it’s bad whether or not they mean “all young people are ‘dumb’ because they don’t have as much life experience” or not. I wouldn’t burn bridges even if you are changing fields. Vent here, therapy, to friends and moveon dot org.
Wait and see how you feel when you are leaving your current job, and decide then. I despised my old job and had planned on burning the bridge, because honesty is very important to me and also I wanted to improve (if at all possible) the situation I was leaving behind for the coworkers that I was also leaving behind. However, once I had a new job lined up, I felt less passionate about how I had been mistreated in the past and was happy enough to move on to my new position by making some general comments in my exit interview on how I thought things could be improved, but not digging up specific insults.
Thanks for this, I have the same feelings about wanting to improve the working environment for my coworkers. There have been a variety of blatant ethical issues here almost all stemming from the top and being ethical and honest is at the top of my priorities in my day to day life. Maybe once I am already out the door I will feel like I want burn the place down in flames less than I currently do.
I know we’ve had conversations here before about costumes. Heard a Halloween announcement on the radio on my drive into work and realized I need to think about a work costume. Any ideas for can work all day in it (medical office), is appropriate and preferably something that doesn’t need to be explained? Tempted to do the usual stripey tights, black dress and witch hat. Boring! And yes, the WHOLE office dresses up.
Your comment has been rejected due to gross failure to respect the rhythms of the seasons. All Halloween inquiries will be accepted no earlier than the Tuesday following Labor Day.
Also dress up as the zombie corpse of Dr. McDreamy OBVI.
There’s already Halloween candy displays in the grocery store…
+1
haha so true but once it gets closer I fold under pressure!

I’d also love suggestions for cool non-work outfits. I’m never witty enough or slu**y enough with my costumes
I wear a t-shirt with a periodic table of the elements on it (the radioactive ones glow in the dark!) and go as…a periodic table (life science industry). Bonus points for it being black and wearing it with orange pants.
A friend of mine wore an all black outfit with those long narrow colored lights (kind of like the glow in the dark flexible stick things) connected to his clothes to make a stick figure. When he was outside in the dark he looked like the walk sign at intersections and it was amazing.
That’s so cool! Might have to relay that idea to my BF…
I did that one year. You can get the glow sticks at the dollar store.
Office appropriate suggestions from previous Halloween threads here have included “Devil’s Advocate” (wear a suit with horns and a pitchfork) or “spelling bee” (bee costume with letters taped to it).
I would protest that it’s too early to talk about Halloween, but it’s my favorite holiday, so… I’m ok with two months of Halloween costume planning.
I love Halloween too. We throw a party every year but I’m having the hardest time coming up with a costume idea this year.
Oh my god, it’s Halloween-leadup season already? *buries head in sand and pretends it’s still summer*
Pirate is always a fun one that you can usually make out of stuff in the closet. Skinny black pants, loose white shirt, gaudy (fake) gold jewelry/hoop earrings, heavy kohl eyeliner if you feel like it. If you have long hair, wear it down and messy, Jack Sparrow headband, beads optional, tall boots. Accent for as long as you can stand it. :)
Our office doesn’t dress up, but I’m repurposing my Renaissance Faire outfit for this year. I don’t get enough chances to wear that thing!
I figured out a Hogwarts uniform costume out of things in my closet. Finally a reason to use my graduation robe again…
My sixth grade teacher dressed up as static electricity one year. She dressed all in black, cut out the bottom of a clothes basket, and pinned socks to herself.
I did this once but I was the hole in the dryer where all the socks get lost.
These may need an explanation but :
Get various grey paint chips, stick to your clothes- 50 Shades of Grey
T-shirt that says Maybe- Call Me Maybe
White clothes with white paper plates & plastic flatware taped to it- White trash.
Maybe I’m a prude here, but none of those sound work appropriate.
Forget work appropriate – I don’t think a costume of “White Trash” is appropriate anywhere.
I have definitely seen this costume in my office before… but I do not disagree.
Gah. No kidding. That’s horrible.
#1 and #3 are definitely *not* work appropriate. I don’t get #2…
Fortunately, I no longer work in a “mandatory dress up” office, but when I did, my go-to office costume was ballerina. Black leggings or workout tights, one of those trendy tulle skirts that are everywhere now, camisole, an old wrap sweater from my ballet class days, nude/pink/black flats, and hair in a bun.
I am a lawyer, and I’ve had fun adding a cape and super hero headband to a regular outfit. It’s cute enough and easy enough to be funny/cute, and easy to take off if I need to meet with someone/go to court.
I’ve always wanted to just show up with judicial robes, but I think that my boss wouldn’t be happy with that.
I’ve had to be in court on dress up day too (it is still taken very seriously in our office) and I had a suit and carried a little toy ambulance and was an “ambulance chaser” :-/
What kind of medicine? If you could do something related to your field, that would probably be doubly office-appropriate with bonus points for cleverness.
Two that I have done a lot are little red riding hood (red hooded cape on top of a normal outfit, which for me was pencil skirt and white shirt) and also a bat (dress in black, buy yard of black felt fabric and cut out a bat wing shape. Pin to your shirt along the arms).
Dress in a bath robe and shower cap and carry a loofah and baby doll and be a baby shower. Or wear a football jersey with a wand or some harry potter wizard stuff and be a fantasy football player.

Q-tip. Wear all white with a fur hat and tapes some fur to your calves and down. Have other people be cotton balls and other doctor office things…? That’s it. Sorry everyone I am procrastinating HARD today.
Airline pilot, ship captain, pirate, Albert Einstein?
To play off the medical office:
Do you wear a white coat (or could you borrow one)? Mad scientist is pretty easy, and generally just needs crazy hair or a wig, and safety glasses or goggles are a good prop.
I’ve seen Mad Cow Disease (basically pin black spots on white outfit and horns to be a cow and a scowl) and Bird Flu (Feathery headband and a surgical mask with a beak sticking out of it) or Swine Flu (pig ears and mask with snout) as well.
Someone in my office once dressed as Jennifer Anistons’ character from Office Space with a green & white shirt with pieces of “flare.” It was cute, easy (I think) and definitely work appropriate.
*flair, not flare
One year I wore all-black with a black knit cap and had a bunch of costume jewelry hanging out of my pockets, and said I was a jewel thief.
The next year I wore all black without the cap and said I was “the dark” (as in, I’m afraid of the dark).
I also had a friend one year who wore all gray and attached Pepsi logos to her clothes and said she was a can of Diet Pepsi.
Dress up as audrey Hepburn/ holly golightly
I just got a cleaning service, and I’m so excited. For those of you that have cleaning services, what kinds of special projects/cleaning do you have them do, other than the usual? I have a small place, and I know they’ll have extra time.
I tried several services but it was a huge disappointment to be honest. I have very high standards and expect everything to sparkle because this is how I clean. Sadly, my opportunity cost of cleaning is too high so I have found no solution.
I have our bed linens to be washed/changed and it is the best. Although with my cleaning service, I pay extra for that (and other extras like vacumming the curtains or taking out the recycling), so I’m not sure it’s a matter of having extra time.
Laundry. Ours washes and folds our sheets/towels which is a huge help. Even just folding a load of laundry is helpful and it’s not really a standard service offered by most companies.
I wouldn’t be giving them any extra tasks to start with. If it’s really a ton of time cut the hours. If not, let it go. Hiring a cleaner is about letting someone else take care of it not micromanaging everything they do. You’re paying for their standard service. If you want extras expect to pay for them.
I disagree – many services have a minimum number of hours, and so having a list of tasks that should be done periodically fills that time and takes things like wiping down baseboards, vacuuming curtains, wiping down blinds, etc off the poster’s plate. Yes, if you have to pay for 4 hours and your place takes two, you need a contract that sits your situation better, but that’s not what it sounded like.
They’re the professionals – I let them figure out what needs to be cleaned.
Disagree, Wildkitten – every service has a different threshold of what is “standard” and what you need to ask for. Especially tasks that only need to be done only periodically and not regularly. They’re probably not keeping track of when they last cleaned out behind your fridge or oven – you need to ask for it. If you’re paying for a service, then you should certainly communicate your needs.
I guess my standards are just lower than yours – I’m not keeping track of when my fridge or oven has last been cleaned either. Probably never? I’ll keep doing my system though since it works for me.
If you’re not paying extra, they’re never cleaning behind the fridge.
… and I still don’t care. Thanks for all the concern about my fridge though, guys.
The only extras I get them to do are cleaning the fridge/oven and the windows every once in a while. It costs an extra $10 though. I think the extra scrubbing tasks that need to be done every once in a while are good extras but I also agree with the other comments that I wouldn’t give them extra tasks at first. When I first got my cleaning lady, I underestimated how long it would take her because I have a small space but I much prefer her spending her time being thorough.
Maybe I’m weird but I don’t like my cleaning lady to change my linens or do my laundry. I like changing my sheets on Sundays so I get into bed that night with fresh sheets but I have my cleaning lady come during the week. I’m also particular about the laundry so I don’t really like other people (including my SO) doing it.
I’m the same with laundry (clothes, bed linens) but do have my cleaning lady wash the towels.
Extras will probably cost you. When we had a 1 bed apartment, it never took them a full hour but if we asked the to do stuff like clean the fridge, there was always an extra charge.
It would take me at least an hour to clean my 1 bedroom apartment.
Can anyone who has ordered from the clothing line Boohoo comment on their quality or sizing?
It’s cheap fast fashion – quality is in line with other retailers at that price point (Primark, Forever 21, etc). I wouldn’t if you can avoid it.
Any advice on negotiating a job offer? I’m expecting an offer next week and think the pay will be in line with what I expect and it is done in bands based on years of experience anyway so I don’t think there will be much room to negotiate there. What I’d really like is an additional week of vacation from what they typically offer. If they aren’t willing to give me additional paid vacation I’d like to at least be able to take a little extra time off unpaid. My husband has twice the time that I think I’ll be offered and part of the benefit of my current job is that I can pretty much take off as much time as I want, although it is all unpaid. I’m scared of giving up that flexibility. Also, I won’t be using their health insurance plan because I already have a great plan through my husband. Does that provide me any leverage? How do I phrase a negotiation email requesting extra vacation time? I’ve never negotiated an offer before and I’m nervous.
I asked for an extra week of vacation when I moved from Big Law to small law (they offered 2 and I asked for 3, which is what I had in Big Law) and they gave it to me no problem. I simply asked outright for the extra vacation. I asked for more money too, but they didn’t give me any.
Vacation is typically easier to negotiate for, in my experience, because it doesn’t factor into a budget the way salary does. I’d just ask for more vacation time.
Do you all have a favorite? Preferably with limited scent. I have dark hair and am really struggling. So far I’ve tried Bumble and Bumble pret-a-powder, tresume’s spray (smell was too much), livingproof spray (smell wasWAY too much), and the only one that comes somewhat decently close is Psst, but it leaves my hair with a slight gray tinge. I’d like something that helped with the oily roots and maybe helped with some volume. Help!
Try the drybar dry shampoo. It comes in colors so you can get the one that is your hair color. If you dye your hair it will also help cover the root color.
I have dark hair, asked my hairdresser for a recommendation and came away with salt spray (to dry out the oil, I guess). Which was also the recommendation for holding lightly curling hair/waves instead of a curl cream. Use it more for the curl function than the dry shampoo function.
I love PSsst, and I’ve also tried Batiste which comes in brown. I just bought Dove and haven’t found it to leave any gray mist, but sometimes this happens as you get to the end of the bottle so the jury is still out.
COLAB dry shampoo has absolutely no colour so is good for my dark hair, but I find it doesn’t have the lasting power and my roots look greasy again after about 8 hours. My favourite dry shampoo is Batiste XXL Volume because it adds volume and one application can last me 2 days. It does leave a white cast, but that can be mitigated by applying it at night or rubbing it in with your fingers.
I use the Not Your Mother’s brand, and I like it. I have gotten samples of amika and R+Co through Birchbox and enjoyed those as well.
One trick I do is spray it on at night and then just go to bed. It absorbs all the oil while I sleep and any white/gray cast and smell is gone (along with the grease) when I wake up.
I’ve heard that some of the tinted ones will run colors if they get wet, but that is secondhand knowledge, not based on my own experiences. I’ve never used the tinted ones.
I also use the Not Your Mother’s. I find the scent to be not too much, it doesn’t leave my hair looking chalky, and doesn’t make my scalp itch by the end of the day.
Aveda supposedly has one coming out. I like Not your mother’s for a cheaper option.
i also have dark and oily hair and really like the frederic fekkai brand’s dry shampoo. it doesn’t tint my hair grey-ish like many other dry shampoos and it also cuts down on that 2nd day itchiness for me. that was a huge benefit, not only did my hair not look greasy, but my scalp felt good, too.
Try Baptiste, they are a similar quality to Psst IMO and they offer tinted dry shampoo that doesn’t turn your hair gray. http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod3560065&skuId=2234688&cmpid=PS_Non!google!Product_Listing_Ads&cagpspn=pla&CAWELAID=940757783&catargetid=330000200000348232&cadevice=c&gclid=CIaK2sSW28cCFYMWHwodjUkMag
I use Bumble & Bumble’s pret-a-powder at night with a high bun in a fabric scrunie for great 2nd- day volume (or 3rd) or Psst in the morning as needed. The powder massages in overnight and there is no white residue left the next day. For reference, I have light brown hair.
@DC, does the powder get all over your pillow/face at night? I shy away from products in the evening thinking they’re going to migrate and give me acne.
I do this as well, but I make sure to run a damp cotton pad or towel along the hairline before I go to bed, and I sweep my hair to my back (side sleeper) to keep it away from my face. I haven’t noticed any breakouts around my hairline, but it would probably depend on your skin type.
Hi all, any suggestions for this weekend in DC? I’d love some insider thoughts on off-the-beaten path sights or events over the long weekend. Thanks!
The Washingtonian has some lists of what to do over Labor Day. Great Falls in VA or MD is beautiful, you’ll have to drive there. Get there early because it can take forever to get into the park and park your car on the weekends. Georgetown Waterfront and shopping in Georgetown. The Beach at the building museum has been so popular this summer but it’s sold out I believe. National’s are in town this weekend! While it’s not “off the beaten path”, it’s one of the easiest urban baseball parks to get to, it’s a nice, clean park, and you can get drinks before/after in the bullpen outside of the stadium. It’s actually one of me and DH’s fav things to do in DC in the summer.
Thanks- I read about the Beach. It sounds really interesting! No more tickets online, but they are still selling onsite. Great suggestions, and I appreciate your help.
Georgetown is lovely and the weather looks like its going to be great this weekend so maybe paddle boating in the Potomac river then getting delicious but overpriced gelato and walk around? Its an amazing view and really quaint area.
Dupont Circle is also a great place to walk around and there are some amazing restaurant choices – a recent favorite of mine is Keren (a really inexpensive Eritrean restaurant). There is also Mitchell Park in Dupont if you want to have a picnic or read a book. There is a circulator bus that connects Dupont to Georgetown so you could do both in one day if youre up for it. And there are always the museums/monuments =)
Nice- I was thinking about spending a morning canoeing/paddleboating. Georgetown’s a great idea. Thank you.
+1 to Mitchell Park, which is off the beaten path. Also the Phillips museum in DuPont. The thing about Georgetown is that it’s super crowded and touristy. DH and I avoid it except to go to Kafe Leopld, which we love. You might try the botanical gardens, Union Market and/or Eastern Market if you want to be with locals.
Hillwood Museum
Dumbarton Oaks
Netherlands Carillon
Great ideas- and a little unusual! Thank you.
The National Book Festival is on Saturday – all sorts of authors will be giving lectures and signing books at the Convention Center!
Already on my list- thanks!
Thanks to all the NYC commenters who helped with casual dinner/drink recommendations in Chelsea. We ended up at Half King, and it was perfect for our little group! Friendly staff and cute space.
I also used your suggestions for a Big Onion walking tour (fantastic! I learned so much) and the Whitney (stunning). It was a great visit. Thanks again!
Hi all, I recently started a job where I report to just one person (male). So far I am loving the change, but I am having a hard time navigating how my relationship with my boss is supposed to be. I didn’t ever really have a “boss” before, most of the work I did at my last job was independent and not really supervised. Now I do all of my work for one person and we do a lot of work together, and also travel together. My problem is that I seem to be feeling all of the feelings, and I’m not really used to it. We are getting really comfortable and friendly with each other and it’s nice, we joke around with each other etc. I feel like my boss really likes me and it’s like working on a project with my friend. Then other times maybe he has to remind me to do something or not to do something and I feel so sad like my friend is being mean to me. I haven’t had a boss /worker relationship before and I’m not sure how it’s supposed to look/feel. Has anyone else in my situation felt similarly at the start of a new job before? Any tips on navigating the first few months until I figure this out? I feel like I need to say that this is 100% NOT about romantic feelings, so please don’t mention that. Ick.
How long has he been a boss? He should not be doing a lot of joking around either, for the fact that it makes it so much harder, as you have seen, to give out criticism. I think you should dial back on the joking around & keep it more professional, otherwise you are in for a world of hurt.
He has been a boss for a while, probably a good 5 years, but I do think that he likes me more than the other people at the organization, our personalities are very similar. Might have something to do with the fact that he hired me but did not hire the others.
meh it depends. I joke with my staff differently than I joke with my colleagues. There are levels.
I have a similar situation, where I moved from a situation where I worked for several partners to a situation where I was one partner’s right hand associate and had just one BOSS. It’s hard not to get very tied up in pleasing that person and being frustrated/upset when that person is not happy with you/short with you/not responsive/etc. Try to realize you can’t take it personally, and that you do need to realize this is your boss and not your friend. Constructive criticism will help you do better next time. Hope that helps
You need to learn to not take professional things personally. If your boss reminds you to do something (in a professional way) and you feel like he is being mean by doing that, then you’re being hypersensitive. That’s part of working with anyone – boss, team lead, even coworker. Being friendly and joking around is important because you want to have a good relationship with your coworkers, but you need to make sure you’re focusing on what’s important (deadlines, doing a good job, etc).
I agree with Anon at 1:34 and one thing that’s helped me is to always treat my boss as my boss. We are friendly and joke around and discuss our kids etc, but at the end of the day, I’m always thinking that she’s my boss, she’s friendly but she’s not my friend. I don’t mean that to be as harsh as it sounds, but that’s how I think of it. My boss is great, btw, so it has nothing to do with our relationship.
I agree with these two posts. You can’t take it personally unless he’s doing something wrong management wise. I would not like it if someone who reports to me felt insulted or upset every time I corrected them or asked them to do something. I guess it’s easier for me to see it from the opposite perspective too since I am a boss and I have bosses. I would say I am still friends with my bosses but it’s a different level of friends, somewhere between colleague and friend. If he delegates something just be on spot with it and continue to own it.
RAWR to call in webinars that beep every time someone comes on or off the line, and to people that don’t mute their phones and mean that the speaker can’t be heard.
Alternating banging my head on the desk and wanting to pull out my hair. I hate webinars. But at least I can only half pay attention at my desk, instead of having to be in a freezing conference room at a convention pretending to pay attention.
Ugh. May I also add a RAWR for the following people on webinars/conference calls:
– The person who doesn’t realize they’re not on mute and begins a full conversation with her coworker/therapist/physician’s office (yes, the last one happened, and it was HORRIBLE. People on the call were literally screaming at her to stop. There were…descriptions…)
-The person who puts the call on hold, not on mute and makes everyone listen to their hold music.
-The person who is apparently eating some type of gravel ALL throughout the call.
-The long-winded person asking a question who doesn’t realize that their cellphone means everything has an epic echo to it.
Interestingly, I have found that some of my favorite moments during webinars/conference calls were dogs barking and toddlers asking for popsicles…
Have we been on the same webinars? :-)
My personal best/worst conference calls is probably a tie for the person obviously at a drive through window and the person with the toilet flushing and sink running in the background.
Oh, wait, I just remembered the one with the whispered conversation that wasn’t so whispered and not muted about whether or not they were going to lie to the rest of the group on the call (which included the customer) or just play dumb about a total screwup that was the whole reason for the call. That probably wins for epic conference call screwup that I have experienced.
Oh well, at least it’s over.
If you are ever the one setting up the webinar, you can turn off the beeps and put the call in lecture mode behind the scenes.
