Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.
I've seen a bunch of cute corduroys for work lately — obviously these can very easily read as more casual, so know your office. If you have a business casual office, though, so long as you avoid the cords cut like denim (with 5 pockets) then you should be fine.
Readers, are you getting excited to wear corduroy? (Are you open to wearing them on colder days in the late summer, or are they one of those things you definitely wait for the first day of autumn for?)

The Best Cords for Work Outfits in 2025 (TL,DR)
We just rounded up our favorite cords for work outfits in 2025 — look for pants cut like trousers, not denim. Our favorites include great options from Tuckernuck, Boden, Talbots, and Me & Em. If your office is really casual (or you're shopping for the weekend), check out J.Crew, Kut from the Kloth, NYDJ, Wit & Wisdom, AG, and Loft.
The Best Cold Weather Dress Pants In General
Hunting for warm dress pants for winter? We like fabrics like wool flannel, wool blends, corduroy, and velvet — but know your office before wearing pants cut like denim, with five pockets (especially corduroy and velvet). In 2025, for wool flannel, check Aritzia, Loft, Talbots*, and Nordstrom. For great wool and wool blends, check out Banana Republic, J.Crew*, and M.M.LaFleur. (* = plus sizes)

The Best Corduroys for Work Outfits in 2025
Let's take a closer look at some of those favorites…
Tuckernuck
Tuckernuck has had these cute Ashford pants for several years at this point, and it's this kind of styling that I think could work on a cooler summer day or night. Tan or other lightweight shoe, bare ankle, maybe a linen-y summer sweater on top… For work I'd play up the academic vibe to corduroys and wear it with an untucked white button-front blouse with a sweater layered on top.
The pants are $148 and available in sizes XXS-XXXL (they say an XXXL is close to a size 18, but do check the size chart if you're curious.) This is unfortunately the only color that the cords come in, but you can also get the pant in velvet, “black wax,” faux suede, and ponte.
Talbots
Talbots has these cute flared corduroy pants in a number of colors. This one does have four pockets but they're slant pockets on the front and welt pockets on the back, which in my mind is a lot better than the large, noticeable pockets on cords cut like denim.
The pants are available in six colors in sizes 2-18, 0P-16P, 14W-24W, and 14WP-22WP. (It's so rare to find plus petite sizes!) For those of you in more casual offices, they have a ton of 5-pocket styles in various leg shapes, colors (and prints that look like leopard!), as well as curvy cuts.
Boden
These Belgravia Cord Pants from Boden look great — I think these are some of the biggest pockets we've seen in this roundup. They're available for $179 in petite, regular, and long sizes for $179 (0-22, 0P-12P, and 2L-22L.)
Boden has a lot of corduroy pants right now that might work for work — these similar wide leg trousers are on sale (down to $63!) with lots of sizes left, and these slightly cropped straight pants are also on sale and look fab. These cropped wide legs in a happy blue look nice if a larger patch pocket on the front is ok for your workplace.
Ted Baker
Ted Baker seems to be going through a lot of changes lately, but these stretch cotton corduroy pants in “baritone blue” look lovely. I like that they have front slant pockets and back welt pockets; the hook-and-bar closure also helps. I like that they're machine washable as well!
They're $195 at Nordstrom, available in lucky sizes.
Me & Em
Me & Em has a number of items in a “cotton cord” fabric (as well as a “velvet cord” fabric) — these palazzo pants are I think my favorite from the selection. (They do have barrel pants, though! As well as wide legs down to lucky sizes.)
The pictured pants are $315, come in navy and black, and in regular as well as short sizes.
Akris
Oooh: I love the Ultra Violet shade here in these Akris corduroys, these really seem gorgeous. The wider weave adds to the feeling of luxury. The pants are 92% viscose, 8% cotton (with instructions to dry clean) but ack: gorgeous.
The pants are $730, available in lucky sizes.
Honorable Mentions if You Can Wear Corduroy Jeans to the Office
If you can wear corduroy jeans to the office, do check out J.Crew (I particularly like that the front pockets are more minimal than the usual denim pockets), as well as the huge selection at Boden. Meanwhile, Kut from the Kloth, Wit and Wisdom, and NYDJ all have great options. On the budget side, these Loft pants come in great colors.

Wool Flannel Pants for the Office
Some reliable spots to check for wool flannel pants in 2025 include Loft, Talbots*, Brooks Brothers, Aritzia, and Saks and Nordstrom (with options from brands like Theory and Vince). If you're looking for soft, warm wool pants, also keep an eye out for Italian wool options like those from J.Crew*. (Check the asterisks for plus sizes!)
Wool Pants for Work Outfits
Wool blends are a lot easier to find than flannel — but you really have to try the pant on to see how warm it really is. Nordstrom has a ton of wool blend pants for work, including some classic pants from Theory, Boss, and Lafayette 148 New York. And don't forget about Banana Republic's trove of washable wool work clothes, including a ton of pants; M.M.LaFleur also has a lot of great washable wool styles.
