I’dve been tempted to ask him what color his underwear is or something. Then when he looked shocked, I’d be like “oh, I’m sorry, I just thought it was inappropriate personal questions hour.”
Blonde Lawyer
I wonder if he thought it was an April Fool’s Day Joke, hence the unusual response. A couple female staff here were trying to get all the ladies in the office to stuff their shirts as potentially pregnant bellies to freak out our boss. It is a small office and it would be a huge hardship if we were all out on maternity leave at the same time. There were other important business things going on today so they decided against it. It would have been funny though. The “stuffing” was their second choice. Their first was for us to go in one by one and let them know we were pregnant and going to need maternity leave at the same time. The first person he would think was legit. By the third he would figure out it was a joke. I wasn’t really comfortable doing either but if they had all done the stuff their shirt one I would have been one of the ones to do it near the end.
Profmama
Happened to me, too… “was this planned?”
My response: “we are delighted!” [and keep your mind out of my bedroom!]

It’s hard for one-sized-fits-all items to fit my 00 XS petite face. Can you please link to a product that would work for my head size?

Fooey! I do not think I would wear this, even in the winter when I have to walk through the SNOW with my Fitbit. I agree this will keep my face warm, but do NOT think it look’s that nice. I do NOT want to be thought of as a terorist. DOUBEL FOOEY! Today’s pick’s are a littel unusual, Kat. I would have prefered a NICE HERMES scarf or something like that if you want to stay warm.
BTW, Harold showed up today in the office, and he could use this. He has very littel hair on the top of his head, like the manageing partner, but he is groweing a beard with sideburn’s. It almost look’s like his head is upside down. I told that to Frank and he agreed. Harold want’s to meet me at Crumbs over the weekend. I said Mabye. Madeline got caught today in the toilet. I have an odd issue. I like to listen to the news during my very short commute but I can’t figure out what station. When I listen to npr, it is usually a feel good story or just done random thing that is interesting but not news really. And then we have local stations but they seem more like the local news on TV with murders and stuff. Any ideas? I just got a car with Bluetooth. Is would love to be able to just get into my car and have the news start playing without having to download podcasts or whatever.
Anon
I listen to my iPhone news apps in the car. My favorites are BBC news, France Info and Deutschewelle but I’m sure they probably have apps for whatever sources and/or langauges you are interested in.
Preg anon
It is audio? Do you have to push play on an individual article? I have the cnn app and I don’t see that it had just streaming news coverage. Am I missing something?
Anon
Yes to audio, and yes to streaming. I just hit the play button and it goes until I stop it – it isn’t individual stories that you have to individually click on.
rook
If it is a pretty short commute, you could try the “hourly news update” on the npr app – it’s the same news they repeat at the top of the hour. In my npr app, there is a “news” menu at the top and “play hourly news” is the first choice.
Lily student
On my iphone I can set it to check for and download new podcasts automatically, so it takes the hassle out of that part.

Couch Cushion Covers?
Has anyone had luck finding good couch cushion covers? We have a “leather” couch, that apparently is actually bonded leather, because the leather layer peels off and the couch is looking nasty. Replacing isn’t in our budget, and the shape works well for our space, but it needs help. I have looked into slip covers and haven’t found any that fit the shape of the couch – kind of an left hand L sectional with a chaise on the end. I will post a link of a similar shape in reply. Am open to just cushion covers (box cushions) or a whole slipcover. Any good leads appreciated!

Depending on how crafty you are, you could make your own. A good friend of mine does this – you just need access to a sewing machine.
Anon
Perhaps engage someone to make you a custom slipcover? Your local sewing store may have a bulletin board or list you can use to find someone. They’re also not hard to make, if you can sew. You basically drape/pin the fabric, sew it, and then turn it inside-out.

So, I used to have a pleather sofa that I couldn’t replace, and I bought slip covers at BBB. They didn’t fit well, but I’m not sure they would have worked even if they did. It just feels really weird to be sitting on fabric over leather (or pleather). The fabric sort of slips around. I would probably just try to buy something to patch the spots and save up for when you can buy a new sofa.
Totes.
Can you buy this at Walgreens?
style help
In addition to my fleece face mask, I just bought my first pair of cropped pants. I am not fashion-forward, but by g*d, I am trying to be. I am petite, (0-2, xs, 5’2″ but long legs), so I have always been uneasy about wearing something that would cut off my legs. But, now that I am finally tiny, I’m much better proportioned than I was 50 pounds ago.
They’re slender, dark lightweight denim–like trouser-jeans material. They come just above my ankle, so longer than capris, shorter than ankle pants, I guess.
How do I wear them? My office is very casual, so jeans with put-together top is totally acceptable.
Cat
I like pointy-toed flats with ankle pants — gives that Audrey-esque neat and chic feel. For a top, I’m always a fan of an untucked button front.

I just got cuffed ankle chinos for the weekend and I love them with button downs and boat shoes. Very practical for running around with my son but could also totally work in a preppy way for casual Friday I’d think. Especially if you add a nice slim belt and jewelry.

The only recommendation I’ve ever wound up buying was a variation on last year’s zombie shoes. Not sure what that says about my fashion sense. :-)
NOLA
I don’t know that I’ve ever bought one of Kat’s picks. But I have bought things on recommendations from other commenters.
preg anon
Okay, I really like you NOLA (my shoe twin), so this isn’t really directed at you. BUT I have seen a lot of similar comments, and I have to say: blogging is a lot harder than it looks, and my blog is about .132% the size of this one. It takes a lot of work, and frankly, it takes a lot of tough skin. All of us have different styles, and Kat is putting hers out there for all of us to comment on it. Think about that! So by saying that, you’re saying you don’t like Kat’s style, and that’s got to sting a bit. I get talking about a specific item, and why you do or don’t like it, or why it doesn’t fit into your personal style, but I don’t see the point of saying you’ve never bought anything she has recommended, or you don’t like anything she posts, etc. It just seems like people jump at the opportunity to say that. I know people might respond to this saying that you can say whatever you want, which you totally can, I just wanted to remind people to think about how Kat feels. :) (When you end it with a smiley face, nobody is going to respond badly, right???)
NOLA
I did not mean to offend, preg anon, or insult Kat as I have tremendous respect for her. Honestly it’s about 2 things having nothing to do with Kat’s taste. One is that many of the clothes just wouldn’t work for my body, no matter how pretty they may be. and two, my workplace is more casual than many of the clothes that are posted. so I admire, but mostly couldn’t wear them.
NOLA
And actually I misspoke. I have bought a few things, including a black and textured black version of the Skirt back in the fall.
preg anon
You definitely didn’t offend me (or maybe even Kat, ha ha), I just have been meaning to say this for a while. :) I just read your response in context (because the prior reader had asked what it said about her style) to be commenting on Kat’s style. Anyway, you’re great!
Sarabeth
Right, I should clarify too – I lppreciate both the blog in general and her picks in particular. I just don’t actually buy very many clothes! So the fashion here is satisfying to me as voyeurism, just not as anything useful enough to my life to justify buying.
Lily student
I’m also a blog voyeur here – I go into Banana Republic, sigh, and wish I had the kind of job where I could wear clothes like that all the time. But that’s why I’m at university, right….?

I just have to say that you ladies have been killing it today – both Kat’s posts and the comments have made me choke on my water/snort inappropriately at my desk more than a few times. It’s almost making me wish April Fools Day was monthly!
Feeling silly
Ladies, I am bummed about something that I think is silly. A very good friend of mine recently got engaged, and I just learned I will not be in the wedding party. She was in my (smaller) wedding party a couple years ago, and I consider her one of my closest friends. I guess it’s tough to learn that maybe she does not feel quite the same way (which is not to say I think she doesn’t consider me a friend, just maybe not of the same level).
Now, I say all of this is silly because (a) I know firsthand how complicated weddings are and I know there are so many competing interests that it’s almost impossible to make a decision without offending someone; (b) let’s be honest, being in a wedding can sometimes be an expensive/time consuming/complicated process, so I probably got off easy; and (c) I’m almost 30 and this is a dumb thing to be upset about. But despite knowing all of that on an intellectual level, I still feel kind of sad. Any tips for shaking this feeling? Thanks!
NOLA
Sometimes our first response isn’t always the rational response. I think you’re sounding very self aware and you’ll get over it. But it’s ok to have that initial disappointed gut reaction.

While everything you say about weddings being complicated etc. is true, this kind of thing still stings. Too bad everyone doesn’t just have a gaggle of sisters who can stand up for them. No one’s feelings get hurt when you can say “oh, well, her wedding party is all family.”
Clementine
TBK!! How are you? Was there an update I missed?
(Y’all can just point me to the thread… work got crazy last week and I missed a few posts. I’ve gone back and looked and not seen one.)
bridezillas
No real help with shaking the feeling, but I can empathize. I’ve been in a grand total of 3 weddings, including my own: my sister’s, and my very best friend’s from growing up. There is something unique about the inner circle of the bride & the bridesmaids, and I think it is not unreasonable to be a little bummed, if not miffed.
But, you can look at it this way: you won’t be forced into a dress that may be unflattering (best friend’s wedding bridesmaid dress was pretty awful for me: a color that totally washed me out, drop waist & long-ish length. I kind of had to make the best of it), nor will you be asked to run interference with anything or do any odd jobs.
In the end, you’ll get over it. I (and then bf, now dh) were not even invited to a particular friend’s wedding many years ago, but, by all accounts, it is probably better that we weren’t there (the group of friends is so rowdy, that the bride, a bit of a bridezilla at the time, composed a list of “rules” for the wedding party AND guest friends in the hopes that they would behave…the ultimate sad travesty is that she passed away last year, but we are closer than ever to her widow (who had always been a mutual friend) and her kids). You won’t be obligated to brunch, to host a shower, to come up with a toast. If it is a “destination” wedding (even if it isn’t), you can use the time you are there for a vacation, rather than an obligation.
KinCA
I can definitely understand feeling that way – no matter how old you are. It can certainly sting a little bit to feel left out.
As a bride-to-be, I’m currently choosing my bridal party and it is actually a lot harder than I anticipated. I feel guilty about leaving people out (there are people I really want to include, yet we are having a smaller wedding and 5-6 bridesmaids party seems excessive, plus my fiance really wants a smaller bridal party), yet at the same time, I feel guilty about including people too (being a bridesmaid is expensive and time consuming and I hate asking for so much of my friend’s time/money/energy, especially when they have their own things going on).
I would just say that at the end of the day, it’s probably not about you or the bride not wanting you to be a part of her day. She might have family members that she HAS to include in the bridal party and that is forcing her to leave a few friends out, or she might be having a smaller bridal party for cost/logistical reasons. She might even think you have other stuff going on in your life and wouldn’t care or wouldn’t want to be in the bridal party.
But hugs to you and I hope it gets better soon!
Anonymous
You don’t need to shake the feeling! You just found out , it’s okay to be sad for a few days.
Wildkitten
Yeah I would allow myself to be sad and then I’d make a giant list of all the reasons it’s awesome to not be a bridesmaid (no stupid dress! do your own hair! hang out with your date! dont have to go to 10 pre-wedding parties, or worse, plan them!) and then I’d go to the wedding and rock out and have fun. People like to be asked to be a bridesmaid but not being one is way more fun.
Feeling silly
Thanks for all the great replies. It’s helpful to know others would feel the same way, even while recognizing that this is really not that big of a deal and I will get over it. You ladies are the best!
Kathryn
I’m sure no one will see this, but I’m having the opposite problem. I was in a friend’s wedding 2 years ago, and now that I’m having to think about my own bridal party, I don’t believe she’ll be in it. She had 6 maids, I only want 3- my sister, fiance’s sister, and my BFF.
I am afraid she will be offended, but honestly, she hasn’t been the best friend to me, and I think one of the only reasons I was in her party (even though we were only speaking 2 times/year at the time) is because she doesn’t have many girlfriends– because she can be not nice.
Obviously this is a totally different situation than yours (as I don’t think at all that the reasons for not including you and her are the same), but I guess you expressed what I’m afraid she will be feeling when I don’t ask her.
Avery
Not an April Fool TJ (but you ladies are killing it today). I just went to the restroom and noticed a few more gray hairs. I’m thinking it is time to dye my virgin hair. I plan to talk to my regular hairdresser about my options but would love to hear what you do to hide the gray. Do highlights/lowlights work?
marketingchic
It depends on how much grey you have. For a few greys, highlights work really well. I did that for a few years (premature grey in my 30’s, yippee), and my stylist just switched me over to demi-permanent allover color since my percent-to-total grey has increased.
Here’s a thought though – when you highlight, you’re stuck with maintenance (or roots as it grows out.) You could try a demi-permanent first, which washes out gradually. If you don’t like that you could go the highlights route.
Bonnie
That you found the hairs in the bathroom made me think for a second that you were posting an April Fools TJ!
SlowAnon
Sorry, I read too much into your comment. I thought you mean you were a virgin and your pubic hair was turning grey. Not sure you would want to highlight those…or maybe you would?
Avery
HA fortunately I haven’t gone gray there :)

Does anyone know anything about a) consulting in denver or b) consulting with a phd in the sciences? Are there good places to read about those things if one is looking for a job doing those or good people to talk to? TYMVIA.
LadyEnginerd
No idea about Denver, but I know several people who went into management consulting after they finished their PhD. Work your network for informational interviews with people whose degree and background is similar to your own (linkedin is great for this!). I also recommend you check out a technical consulting firm in your discipline, like Exponent or the like.
Wildkitten
Thank you. I know zero about this – everything you posted is brand new to me – so I will probably post again tomorrow. Thank you.
Jill
Does it come with small pearl studs for earrings? I don’t want to wear something dangling or too glitzy and have it be distracting.
Keratin?
Does anyone get keratin treatments done on their hair? How often do you go and about how much do you pay each time? Also, my scalp is very sensitive and I typically lost a lot of hair (not an issue normally since I have thick hair), would keratin not be good for me? I’m just so tired of dealing with my hair (extremely wavy, sort of curly, thick and unpredictable). Oh and also, do you get the type that’s formaldehyde-free?
Avery
I did the Keratin Express treatment for a bit, which is formaldehyde-free. I think I was supposed to go every 6 weeks and paid about $75 each time. My hair is fairly straight to begin with, so I didn’t see any real results, but the process itself was very easy and pleasant. Hopefully some wavy-haired women will check in with results!
FWIW I would avoid any formulations with formaldehyde…
coco
Very late, but you might still see it. I hated it. I have wavy-curly hair, and was told the keratin would help with the frizz. Not.
It made my hair really straight and slippery for a while (and not pretty, but like it wasn’t clean).
If you still want one, plan it before a weekend, since you’re not supposed to wash your hair after treatment for a few days.

Hello Ladies, this is rather urgent. I have an interview for a position tomorrow that had no job description, and is at a start up where the CEO just seems confused. I have this sinking feeling I will haul my ass to his home office in the middle of suburbia only to be offered 1/4 market rate and be bombarded with illogical requests by someone who doesn’t know the industry at all. Would it be fair to ask for a job description, expected salary ect BEFORE I go to the interview even though I already accepted?
Otter
I dont think so, since it is such short notice. Instead, you could start off in the interview with asking for a run down of the job description. Salary would come at the end, don’t lead with it. It could also be a nice excuse to turn it down if you don’t like the job description.
JobHelp
Thanks, as a city dweller who relies on public transit, I think I was most off put by the idea of leaving my comfort zone to venture to the suburbs. Practice is practice I suppose.
Wildkitten
Know what you need and take the practice interview but don’t agree to anything you aren’t comfortable with. Good luck! Worst case scenario you get a good story out of the experience.
JobHelp
I just decided to ask, it was 12/h… less than 1/4 the industry standard. I think he was looking for an intern not a graduate with lots of experience. Either that or he was completely naive and though he could scam me. I made more than that at my internship.
ABR
Sorry ladies, just need to get something out. There was a pretty big error on one of my projects, and while I won’t bore you with details the error was something that someone from another department should have caught. Realistically I know that there was no way for me to have identified this issue as it is completely out of my expertise, which is why we brought in the other person to help. When the error was pointed out (by the client, so that was a bad phone call), it took others with expertise in that area an hour to determine what the error was and what should have been done. I’m taking the fall for it as I’m the person interfacing with the client, and I just feel awful. I can’t defend myself without throwing someone else under the bus, and frankly I don’t think this person is at fault anyway. The higher-ups don’t care for details, they just know that there was a problem and I’m fixing it. I’m just rambling out of frustration, but I feel pretty badly right now.
CA Business
Surely this is an April Fools joke. Are you going to mug your clients?
