Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We like this simple boiled wool jacket from Nordstrom. The boiled wool will hold its shape better than other sweater-y type fabrics, and the purple color strikes us as very flattering. We'd throw it on top of a sheath dress, or perhaps combine with a pair of gray trousers and a black tee, with a brooch on that lovely folded collar. It's $228 at Nordstrom.com in sizes XS to XL. 1. This looks like a weird mix of indoor jacket and outdoor jacket to me – am I parsing it wrong? It seems like it might be heavy and uncomfortable all day at the office.

  2. I like this. My office is frigid all day, so I sometimes wear up to 3 sweaters at once. A piece like this might be warm enough while being fashionable at the same time.

And I disagree with the previous poster about the collar…in my experience face-framing shapes like this one are way more flattering than higher collars.

    1. Invest in a small, quiet, under-desk space heater. They’re under 20 bucks and work miracles!

      1. Just be careful when it comes to any kind of small electronics…the office I worked at had a fire that destroyed a large part of their space due to a fan that short-circuited and sparked!

  3. So, what DO we all do with the belt when not tied in front? I always wind up tying them in back. It just dawned on me that for all I know that looks like hell…

  4. I tried this sweater on a few weeks ago. It’s cute and nicely structured, and the purple is a lovely, deep one. I thought it made me look a little bulky on top, though, so I ended up walking out the store without it.

  5. This is just “eh” to me. Could find a million like this at TJ Maxx’s or Marshall’s for $39. Yawn.

  6. I like boiled wool but given its bulkiness I don’t think it lends itself to a belt, unless maybe you are super, super reed-thin and tall, in which case maybe it would work. Not crazy about this jacket.

  7. I got a boiled wool jacket in a turquoise blue from this same line at Nordstrom’s during the anniversary sale. It’s built more like a blazer and doesn’t have the belt, which I would find annoying.

    This is it:

Much more flattering than the purple. Of course, now it’s on sale cheaper than I bought it for. Grrrr.

  8. I don’t like boiled wool because it is itchy. I love wool blazers, even heavily textured wool blazers, but they are always lined. I find that I end up having to wear a turtleneck with boiled wool and then I think it looks too casual.

  9. The aubergine, as well as a teal “Indian turquoise,” were listed by Real Simple a while back as two of the four colors anyone could wear. The other two were true red and, I think, a warm rose pink.

All boiled wool isn’t itchy. It’s a quality thing.

I agree that belting it is going to add pounds. At least self-belting it will. It will also be warm–so take that into consideration.

I’d love it for out and about town down here. We don’t need coats often, so I could get away with it instead of a structured jacket. Boiled wool is slightly stretchy, but more structured than a sweater.

  10. I think of boiled wool as a grandma-goes-to-the-craft-fair fabric. It just doesn’t look polished and professional to me.

    1. That looks a bit thinner. Love it!

Germans and Austrians, very formal folk indeed, wear boiled wool for dress. It’s also a preppy staple. I think that’s where it gets the stodgy rep. These jackets look stylish to me–not edgy, but we are talking corporate, not arty, right?

  11. I agree with everyone else that this jacket would only work on a much thinner frame.
Is use of this plus size model on purpose in response to requests fro “real women?” Definitely doesn’t appeal to me.

  12. I just bought this in an actual Nordie store, in a lovely dove grey. The jacket runs small, but is not bulky at all. Had to go up a size for shoulder comfort. The sleeves are long but can be cuffed or tailored if you like. Nice soft texture, not as scratchy or rough as some boiled wool. Although they are having sales online and in stores, this was still full price. If they had it in black, could be a good back-of-the door jacket/sweater. Just my opinion.
