Tuesday’s TPS Report: San Sebastian Dress

· ·
Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. 42.indexed LeTrainBleu has a bunch of great office dresses that have just a hint of an indie vibe right now — for example, this lovely silk crepe de chine dress, with dolman sleeves, a wide boatnecked scarf collar, and a belt to nip in your waist. We might get daring with shoes with this one, and perhaps a cuff, to accessorize it for the office. It's $189 at LeTrainBleu. San Sebastian Dress (L-0)

  1. i love it! I am on a shopping ban or else I would buy it right now. my one concern is that the sleeves drape in such a way that my bra would be visible through the arm hole. Also, I think I would replace the belt.

  2. Hate the belt. It looks more interesting in the 2nd view on the website, but I think that these kinds of sleeves are not flattering to most people.

    1. Belt is odd, but the sleeves are flattering on most women because they don’t cling to your arms, instead draping over them for a smooth line — most women’s arms look more slender in them.

        1. But in the pics, the model’s whole top half looks WIDE. I can’t imagine how it would look on DD me (e.g. bad!).

          1. DD?

I think she has an hourglass figure – so yes, wider then her waist… but that’s something that a lot of women want!

    2. This is so cute, with a reasonable price and classic enough shape to last a few seasons. I hope to live vicariously through those who buy it.

But (here I go again…) WHY OH WHY is everything belted this season (and last)? So unflattering on short torsos and/or large bustlines. I’m on a non-self-imposed shopping ban because nothing in the stores is flattering right now . The last thing I need is lots of crew necks, ruffles across my chest, and a belt cutting me in half (or blousy shirt that must be tucked in).

      1. This is why I say every woman should not wear every trend. Better to know what flatters you, and dress to enhance your assets, than to have a closet full of this season’s must-haves.

  3. I would like it better if it were V-necked, just because I’m busty and boatnecks are not the most flattering neckline. Plus I don’t like the belt. But I totally get what you’re saying about indie appeal–I really like the material.

  4. I love it. Might replace the belt, but really love it. This is a rare work dress than if I was meeting a non-lawyer friend after work wouldn’t make me feel like I lost my personality in the day to day ‘corporate uniform’.

  5. 20% off at Le Train Bleu with the code Spring10! That dress (which is GORGEOUS) would be about $150.

  6. Love this dress. For some reason, it appeared to be dark green at first glance, which I liked even better, but the black is still very nice.

  7. Beautiful dress — site describes it as hitting just below the knee on most women, though, and I prefer my dresses at or just above my knees because if it hits my legs at a wider point – i.e. below the knee, it makes my legs look stumpy/bigger, and also give a matronly appearance that I don’t find attractive.

    1. i nearly posted that one also but didn’t like the picture as much (it looked foggy to me for some reason this morn)…

  8. I think this dress looks really sloppy. Even the model looks embarrassed to be wearing it.

  9. Tailor! :-) That’s an easy alteration – especially as opposed to, say, changing up the sleeves so that they’re more flattering.

  10. Is it just me, or does anyone else want to force this model to eat a burger and a whole cheesecake?

    1. Instead of criticizing the model’s body and starting a fight, can we (collectively, not me and RC) agree to criticize the stores, designers and agencies that hire such thin models as a representation of the female ideal?

Although I do see that it’s easier to create sample sizes in a standard, small size, it would be nice to see more average-sized women as models, if for nothing else than to help me figure out how that dress is actually going to look on me.

      1. I can agree to that.
Especially with online shopping I feel like real-sized models are important. We spend all this time debating whether those sleeves work on our arms, etc., and if they put the dress on a more regular model we would know!

        1. For some of us, this model is our real size. Please don’t insinuate that there is something wrong or not “regular” with wearing this size. I will always be tall and skinny (unless/until I hit that magic age where my metabolism changes). Just because it isn’t your personal size doesn’t make it a less “real” size.

          1. Thirded. Anyone notice how today thin arms are good (oh this dress makes arms look more slender) and yesterday the arms were too thin? LOL.

          2. Let’s say it would be nice to see “average” sizes, not “regular,” then. It is hard for my size 12 self to shop online when almost all the clothes are modeled by size 2s.

      2. What Eponine said. Let’s just not comment on the women’s bodies at all.

        1. Agreed. I was told numerous times as a summer associate, “We’re going to do our best to fatten you up at lunch today,” and I hate to think that others out there think that this is an acceptable comment to make simply because I’m slim. My diet (and my naturally-high metabolism) is no one else’s business and shouldn’t be up for discussion more than anyone else’s.

  11. What really gets me is her expression, which she duplicates throughout the site. If my 12-year-old daughter were sporting it, I’d ask her if she was aware she was radiating hostility. (Poor introverted daughter, in training to interact with awareness in an extroverted world!)

  12. This looks like a very expensive swimsuit cover-up. All it needs are huge sunglasses, a designer tote, and a fabulously overpriced suite at a beach-front hotel in Cannes…

  13. 25% off and free shipping on purchases over $100 at Banana Republic today – code is BRSPECIAL

      1. Right? they call it raven black, I’m glad my eyes aren’t broken! Maybe its black with a green sheen

  14. A little too “different” for me…. but would look cute on someone (just not me!)

  15. I almost bought this and the Cecily day dress, until I saw their return policy:

Returns must be received by us within 14 days of the ship date for domestic customers and 30 days for international customers. …
We do not offer refunds on returned sale merchandise. Returns of discounted items (whether on sale or purchased with a discount coupon code) can be returned for a store credit or free exchange, no refunds.

I’m sorry but 14 days (receiving!) is ridiculous, and if I use the coupon code someone suggested above, then I can’t get a refund at all! So much for trying on these dresses, they really were nice..
