Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. Ok: this shirt does not look like much on the mannequin. In fact, it kind of looks like a boring, frumpy, shapeless blouse. But I think if you look closer it's that rare basic, an ivory silk blouse, that has some gorgeous detailing on the neckline, sleeves (appropriate for all offices!), and would look stunning tucked into a pair of trousers, a pencil skirt, or worn beneath a suit. It's marked from $180 to $128 at Yoox.com (sizes 0-12 still available as of this AM). PORTS 1961 Short sleeve shirt Seen a great piece you'd like to recommend? I’m wearing a very similar styled blouse this morning, actually. It looks fabulous on me and I always get a ton of compliments whenever I wear it. I have narrow shoulders and a small bust. Not sure how this sort of neckline would look on someone more broad shouldered.
soulfusion
agreed, I fear my broad shoulders would make this pretty boxy.
housecounsel
That blouse is absolutely gorgeous.
Diana Barry
I agree. Very nice!! (Is it a bit shiny, though?)
anon
Too shiny for my personal office style, but I’d probably love it on someone else. The “stylists” for this garment didn’t do it any favors with the white background and gray bottom-thing.
Bonnie
I’d definitely have to see it in person but I have a feeling that this blouse is much more attractive on a person than on a hanger. I wish they had not shown it on a mannequin.
fresh jd
I feel like you can find something like this at Ann Taylor for half the price.
AJ
I think you SHOULD be able to find something like this at Ann Taylor for half the price but what you will instead find is a $60 polyester top.
KC
Exactly, with the neckline detail only on the front. If I ever tucked things in, I’d go for this blouse.
Mir
I hate hate hate that Ann Taylor only “does” the fronts of their shirts! I really liked one of their silky tiered shells a couple seasons ago–it looked great from the front but the back looked like a $5 tank made of see-through cotton blend. I couldn’t justify the price for something that looks so cheap when worn alone. grrr
I love this blouse, though!
SF Bay Associate
That drives me crazy. It’s the strangest thing – you have to keep a cardigan on all day so no one sees the cheap, flimsy cotton that’s not even the same color as the pretty front of your top. UGH. Why would I ever buy that, Ann Taylor??
soulfusion
HA! I just bought a shell like that from Ann Taylor despite the weird cotton back simply because it was on absolute clearance sale (marked way down plus 40% off so it was in the $20-something price range). The back really gave me pause except that I rarely take cardigans/jackets off in the office in the summer due to the A/C.
fresh jd
Hmm, not sure I ever noticed this. I have plenty of Ann Taylor tops and I can’t say I’ve noticed this issue in any of them.

I love ivory (good for my pale pale skin) and I often find this style of blouse extremely flattering with my usual choice of tailored pants. This is very pretty. I don’t like to wear white/ivory blouses because I think it looks odd with a white lab coat on top (which I wear to clinic).
Very pretty choice!

Yesterday, I received a suit I ordered online and tried on the pants, which are charcoal with a single pleat (not a scary pleat) and more of a straight leg look. DH told me I looked like I was in a Golden Corral uniform. Then, once I put the jacket on, he swore that the pants looked fine. *sigh* I’ve got to get a full length mirror…
Legally Brunette
Got my first stash of goodies from the Nordstrom sale, with mixed results:
Classiques Enter marcasite jacket, skirt, and pants: I like this suit and the pretty details, but I’m not in love with the fabric, which is pretty much all polyester. I wish it were a wool blend.

Paige Premium Hidden Hills jeans — it seems to be that my quest for good jeans for pear shapes remains elusive. I thought these jeans just emphasized my thighs. Sigh.

I’ll add my review:
I got this 3 piece suit and don’t love it: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/halogen-two-button-blazer/3140797?origin=category&resultback=251
It’s an ok suit but I seem to be between sizes on the jacket. I wish they had it in numbered sizes instead of small, medium, large.

Mine:
I got these Jag Jeans capris. The fit was Ok, but the fabric was itchy – yuck! These go back.

And this BCBG dress is gorgeous, but b/c it wasn’t petite sizing, the waist is a bit low (and not really alterable). I might have to keep though b/c I love that it’s a bit modern but w/ a conservative cut.

Very pretty, although I’d be terrified of spilling a single drip of coffee and destroying it.
attorney
Why would that destroy it? Coffee goes away with Woolite very easily. What I find gets destroyed and nothing seems to fix are the pits of silk shirts. Anyone have ideas?
AIMS
You could get those little “shields” to wear with the shirt.
I also started using a deodarant recently that claims not to yellow/discolor any garmets. Time will tell if it works.
visitor
Several people who know fabric and fine clothes have told me not to use Woolite. Baby shampoo has been suggested instead.
I would consider this blouse, as it’s pretty, but I would be fearful.
kellyn
It would destroy it for the rest of the day that you are stuck wearing it, though :(

I LOVE this!
Lithe Method
Anyone live in Philly and work out using the Lithe Method? Went to my first class last week and it kicked my butt, but I loved it. I’m considering signing up for the full immersion course. Curious if anyone has any thoughts about the workout.
http://www.lithemethod.com
C.
I know a woman who’s hardcore into the Lithe method. She’s an acquaintance, not a friend, so I don’t know too much about why it works for her, but I know she’s gotten really into the whole routine. Is it possible that there’s a dietary component, too?
Lithe Method
No dietary component as far as I know (unlike Crossfit, which recommends the Paleo diet method). Thanks for the response.
Tracey
Lauren, the founder of Lithe, tends to eat in locovore fashion. She likes whole grains, veggies, and tends to eat vegetarian overall. She doesn’t say you have to eat that way but they have a program that combines diet/exercise to lose weight/inches but it’s separate from their normal workouts.
Tracey
I love Lithe. I did it for a few months rather religiously. I did Immersion then a few weeks of 101 classes to make sure I had the basics. At that point, when I felt more comfortable I started doing the regular classes. I stopped doing it for cost (~$200/month unlimited is pricey) and I found that I didn’t feel I was improving. Each class felt like it was getting harder and harder and I wasn’t losing inches like I’d hoped. I also disliked their scheduling methods. I preferred early AM classes (because of work) and they didn’t always have the classes I wanted to take in that time.
That said, I loved the classes and teachers and if I still lived in Philly I’d probably be doing it again. ;)
Lithe Method
Very helpful Tracey, thanks!
Lana Lang
Love it, but I would tuck it in. But then I tuck everything in for work.

I have to be the dissenter here. I don’t love it. At least, not as pictured. Maybe in person it looks amazing. But it seems like one of those items you have to see and try on to figure out.
Anonymous
I ageree. I think it looks like dressy amish.
visitor
To make it work, the bottom, either pants or skirt, would have to be sleek and modern, probably black. Anything else might make it look dowdy.
j-non
ha.
Tracey
Nah, you aren’t the lone dissenter. It’s not my favorite. One, I can’t wear the color. Two, I’m broad shouldered with bigger arms and I don’t think it would flatter at all. Three, the neckline looks constricting like a noose. Four, it’s long and shapeless. :)
MelD
I dislike it as well. I think I’d like it more in a different color, but this just looks too nightgowny to me. It also has to be tucked because it isn’t tailored enough to work untucked. I prefer the option to leave untucked.
Anon
Did anyone see the movie, Bridesmaids? She was wearing a shirt that was featured on here a while ago – a black and white striped pleated number from Urban Outfitters. It didn’t look like much as featured on here, but in person (in the movie) it was gorgeous on her (her clothes were cute – I recognized all of them – J. Crew schoolboy blazers, Rebecca Taylor dress, that UO shirt). Anyway, I went to purchase it after seeing the movie and its sold out. Sadness.
COS
I think this is beautiful.
I fear that I’m always in too much of a hurry for the buttons-up-the-back to be practical. Even if I make it out of the house on time (and I have a hard deadline of my firstborn’s school bus stop dropoff) I workout mid-day and this seems like a shirt I’d buy but never wear until the kids are in college and dressing leisurely is an option again.
Gem
Must rant somewhere, and here seems a good place. Ive just returned a shift dress and pair of work pants because both are too short. Now the pants I can see it as a personal preference and heels issue, but the dress is being sold as an office appropriate item, it’s halfway up my thighs and I’m only 5’5″. Who is this office appropriate for really?
Anonymous
JCrew, by chance?
I heart JCrew for work basics, but not lately. I haven’t been able to wear any of their skirts or dresses to work in years due to upward creeping hemlines. I’m 5-8, so I understand that not everything is designed with my height in mind, but 5 inches above my knee is not appropriate!
MelD
It doesn’t have as much to do with your height as it does with your torso/thigh length. I am 5’5″ and many dresses are too short on me, but my sister is 5’8″ and can wear the same dresses because she has a very short torso and longer calves. I find that most dresses are just too high waisted for me, and as a result they end up being too short generally too.
AIMS
If it makes you feel any better, I have the opposite complaint and I am only an inch or two shorter. I recently had to hem a pair of “petite” pants. And, I swear when I tried on the “regular,” the length difference was barely half an inch, if that!
I think that it’s just a matter of finding brands that work better for your body/height and sticking with them. But it’s definitely frustrating!
On a random aside: I recently got a totally, non-boxy, perfectly fitted dress at Talbots! I was shocked, as I did not expect it to be even remotely flattering when I tried it on. The only downside is it was a polyster blend, but it fit so well and was on sale for $50, and I figured it would work well enough. Although shopping for work clothes is frequently frustrating, it can occasionally be a unexpected and pleasant surprise :)
Clerky
I’m 5’5 too, and I like my dresses to hit me at the knee. I have had good luck with Classiques Entier, Calvin Klein (look at Ross for cheap ones), and Tahari ASL. All of them are on the longer side or else they have at least 2 inches that can be let out if you need them to be. I have a Banana dress from a years ago that I love, but their dresses are now way too short. HTH.
KD
I completely sympathize! I’m only 5’3″ and have a tough time finding skirts and dresses that hit at the knee while standing. I prefer that length since I don’t feel comfortable with having 4″ of thigh exposed when I sit down and pencil/shift style clothes always shorten when seated (vs A-lines seeming longer..anyways). I suppose it is a torso and thigh length issue, too, as MeID pointed out. Sigh, I’d expect this from ‘younger’ brands like Express and H&M, but it seems that I run into this issue more with Banana Republic and J Crew. For those prices, can’t they spare us and add a few inches to the hemline!
kellyn
I have a shirt like this from banana that I love. It is matte, so there’s not the shiny “here I come!” look to it, and there’s beautiful semi shiny detailing around the neck (front and back, take that AT!). It is my power blouse–wear it to interviews, in court, etc.
And the best part is that it was free! My mom bought it and hated it for what her needs were, passed it along to me, and I love it! Thanks, Ma!
Ms. Basil E. Frankweiler
I think some of my favorite wardrobe items were those that were liberated from my mother’s closet before I moved across the country to go to undergrad. :-D
MaggieLizer
I always associated shiny fabric with women in their 50s or 60s. Am I totally off base?
I have to say, the neckline was much more flattering when I zoomed in than I thought it would be.
Oneanon
Favorite handle yet. Love Arrested Development!
MelD
Possibly. I see shiny fabric on women of all ages at my office- from 22 on up.
ks
OK, as a 50 year old, I am officially offended ;)
Seriously, the only “shiny” blouses in my closet are a couple silk holiday ones I no longer wear.
mamabear
I’m 46 and stay away from shiny. I actually think if satin as a “going out” fabric for the 20 somethings – you know, shiny shirt, tight jeans, high heels?
Loves her silk and satin
I’m fairly young and most of my blouses are silk or satin with varying degrees of sheen. Granted, they aren’t blindingly shiny, but plenty of fabric types have varying degrees of sheen to them and look just fine on people of all different ages.

Threadjack!
This weekend DH and I are going to his 20th high school reunion at Fancypants NE Boarding School. The main Saturday event is a dinner at an alumni’s “party barn.” No dress code provided; families are invited, and the “party barn” has hardwood floors and an outdoor fire pit.
Wardrobe suggestions? TIA!
j-non
think brooks bros. casual– tailored linen or cotten dress and you can’t go wrong! with a cardi, of course. I would think this would be a very safe bet.
Fancypants
This is a hard one.
First, the weather. Think about humidity and your hair. Think about the fact that before dinner it might be hot and after you might want a sweater (or not, if it’s full-blown East Coast summer already there). Think about the fact that it might rain.
Second, the fancypants part. I went to a similar school (but am anything but fancypants). I always felt as if the women who seemed to belong at the NE boarding school type fancypants events looked so effortless. As if they never SHOP for anything, they just HAVE it. So I was always conscious of looking as if I tried to hard. Also, there seems to be some inverse proportion formula between expensive jewelry and accessories and makeup/hairstyles. Apparently, the more expensive the jewelry and accessories (bag, shoes), the less makeup you wear and the less “done” your hair is.
Third, location. I wouldn’t wear any shoes you are concerned about wrecking. Even though the barn has wood floors: (1) you don’t know what the surface is actually like, and (2) you still have to get to the barn, typically through hard dirt and horse-smelling areas.
Last time I went to something like this, I wore a silk halter top and silk pajama pants and felt totally overdressed. The time before, I wore a silk dress (and carried a shawl) and felt as if I fit in more.
Curious to hear others’ thoughts.
Kady
I went to DH’s fancy schmancy CT boarding school 25th a few years ago and totally agree w/ Bunkster. Sooooo preppy – I felt pretty out of place. Now that I live in Boston, I am slowly being assimilated (NE is very borg like, resistance is futile). But you can never go wrong with a nice cardi and pearls. And I actually love some of the new Sperry offerings, which seem they may work well in a party barn (??)
http://is.gd/YykpOc
http://is.gd/KAcjT8
Bunkster
Ahh. Finally a question I can address…
I’m from New England – Boston and I went to a New England-area boarding school. Aside, I’d love to know which one your husband went to.
Anyway, there are 2 ways you can go: either summer skirt/dress (shoshanna, nanette lepore, etc) or capris, cute top, cardigan. I didn’t go to my 20th, but I did go to my 15th. It was a clambake on the quad.
The schools are preppy. You’ll get some dowdy women – all llbean, etc. But there will definitely be some women with taste. I wore a Shoshanna skirt and white top. Another friend wore a Nanette Lepore dress.
Think preppy, but with a little flair. You’ll probably see some Lilly Pulitzer. The food will be good, though.
I’ll try to think of some other details. The men will mostly wear blue blazers and khakis.
MsZ
Thanks, ladies! It’s a challenging event, indeed!
I think I’m debating between an A-line linen skirt and tank/cardi (more preppy, less flair) and a tailored pencil dark denim skirt (really just looks navy – doesn’t really look like denim) and a silk Etro top. I’m leaning towards the latter; normally I’d shy away from the denim, but given the barn setting, perhaps it would be appropriate? and the Etro top epitomizes flair! Friday night I’m wearing a Dolce cotton sheath dress that has a bit of funk in it, and nude for me pumps.
DH went to St Paul’s.
Where is LPC when you need her?
MsZ
also, please substitute “alumnus” for “alumni” in my OP! Vacation brain has set in already.
Bunkster
I went to St. Mark’s and I like your choices, especially the second one. St. Paul’s is in NH. Just checked noaa.gov (looks like it’ll be 70’s during the day and 50’s at night). That’s perfect weather. It’s in the 80’s in Boston right now and kinda nasty.
Also, New Englanders (especially the preppy ones) don’t wear much makeup and tend to keep their hair low-key. So, go with your fashion, but subdue the rest and you’ll be fine.
Have fun!
R
Another NE prep alum (Milton). I agree with Bunkster that your outfit sounds good and also on the hair/make up recommendations. From what I remember of going up to St. Paul’s for events, there’s some hiking through the woods from parking lot to school, so if you have any events on campus I’d go for wedges or slightly thicker heels so you don’t get stuck in the dirt. Probably the same for the barn. As mentioned above, if LPC has input on this, I’d follow it.
Beautiful campus, St. Paul’s, and I always thought the kids there were nice, with one of the more cool/relaxed vibes of the prep schools. Have fun!
kellyn
Dead on with the little/no makeup, simple hair description! Great simple jewelry added in and you are a NE’er (especially a preppy one) for sure ;)
MsZ
Thanks, everyone! I’m looking forward to the event . . . especially since my normal minimalist hair and makeup will suffice!
Divaliscious11
Hey…I went to a “fancy pants” NE boarding school – lol – but I was a day student. I’d go with jeans, a fun top and a wedge sandal….. Preppy only if it’s your look, otherwise you’ll look like your trying to hard ….. It’s all about the accessories anyway…..

Another threadjack:
How do you know when your anxiety/depression has gone from normal to needing medication?
Oneanon
I’m in no way qualified to give medical advice, but given that you’re asking yourself and us this questions, maybe it is time to find a qualified, reputable therapist and discuss with her/him?
Take care of yourself.
MelD
I agree with oneanon that you need to talk to a therapist. You may have situational depression or you may have depression that needs drug therapy. If it’s the former case, it may be possible to make a few life changes to improve your mood, but that’s not anything people on this board will be able to answer for you.
MelD
One thing you can check is whether you’ve noticed a change in mood related to any change in medications. I had a really bad reaction to BCPs about 3 years ago when I switched medications, but I have also heard of women who started to get depressed months or even years after being on the same BCP. It may be worth switching or going off entirely if you think that could be an issue. When I switched meds it didn’t take more than a day or two for me to go on these crying jags for seemingly no reason at all.

If you are not sleeping because of your anxiety, or it is interfering with your life, please discuss it with a doctor. I started taking Lexapro for my anxiety in December, and it has made a noticeable difference in my quality of life. My anxiety has been significantly reduced, and I am so much happier now.

When you feel no joy fr0m the things you used to like to do, or when your anxiety/depression interferes with your relationships and goals.
K
I totally second oneanon’s suggestion to go see a therapist (or even your general practitioner, if that is easier for you) to discuss whether medication is right for you. I waited to talk to a therapist until I was at the point where I had meltdowns about very minor things like forgetting to pick up the drycleaning when it was not essential that I picked it up that day. Please don’t wait until you get to that point!
SF Bay Associate
Agreed. My meltdown was triggered by buying the wrong lightbulb size. Go see your GP and get a therapist referral ASAP if you are wondering if you are medically depressed. Medication may or may not be right for you, but don’t wait until you hit bottom to seek professional help. It is much, much harder to climb back into the light when you start at the bottom.

I just found out that my new firm’s dress code is business formal. I already own a few suits, but I know that I will need to invest in a few more. For those of you who have to wear suits every day, between how many suits do you rotate? TIA!
TCFKAG
I’d wait until you start to buy anymore suits. It may be that when you start, you find out that business formal may include being able to wear a nice pant/skirt/dress with a nice contrasting blazer.
I wear a suit or suit equivalent most days and I think I rotate between about 4-6 depending on weather.
The real limiting factor is shirts I think. And my tendency to spill!
Lyssa
I don’t now, but when I was clerking I did, and I think that I had about 6 suits. Two of them had skirts and pants (I’m trying now only to buy ones with both unless it’s a really great deal), so that was really like 2 more suits, and I sometimes wore dresses (I had 2 which worked) with the blazer from one of my suits.
While it sometimes felt a little boring (particularly in the winter, because I won’t wear skirts/dresses if it’s super-cold), but as far as having clean and appropriate clothing always available, it was more than enough.
MsZ
When I worked at a biz formal firm I felt like 3-4 all-season suits, 2 summer suits, and 2 winter suits were enough to get by. Good luck at the new job!
AL
Kind of an opposite question, kind of: I’m starting a new job soon where I will work from home, though there will be occasional video chatting involved. I know I won’t feel “at work” and mentally focused if I wear super casual clothes, and I won’t feel professional in video conferences that way. But business attire every day seems a little silly.
Any suggestions? I’m thinking cardigan sweaters with nice tops underneath might be a good strategy … and it won’t matter too much if I’m wearing a skirt or shorts on bottom (no one will see on web cam).
Works from home
While each person is different in what they need, try out a few combinations and see what works. My office set-up and regular routine at home is far more important to mentally focusing than my clothing. For example, I formally ‘go to coffee’ in the morning and then ‘go to the office’. When I’m done for the day, I ‘leave’ my at-home office and don’t go back in there.
I actually get more done than I ever did in the office because there are no interruptions here, and without the pressure of a commute, or lunches, I end up spending a longer part of my workday actually working.
99% of the time I’m in yoga pants and a turtleneck or simple long sleeve T and fleece vest–it’s functional, in that it allows us to keep the heat in our drafty house at a reasonable temp.
I wouldn’t consider wearing my business attire daily–
1) I’d rather dedicate the additional 30-60 minutes working than showering, ironing and doing my hair and makeup.
2)Lots of early meetings with the east coast ( 5:30-6 a.m. PST)
3) Have saved a ton on dry cleaning and replacement since I’m only dressing up about 4-8 times a month.
Best of luck transitioning. While it can feel isolated at some points, it’s really liberating–I would have a very tough time going back to an office full-tme at this point.
Wanting to Move
Thanks, I am likely moving from a firm who has a business casual code to a business formal code and had the exact same question. Thanks for your input ladies!
Mere
Thanks, ladies, for your input! I currently have two black 3 piece suits, one gray 3 piece suit, a 2 piece cotton khaki (needs some serious tailoring), and a 2 piece navy (I will buy the 3rd piece soon). Once I start working, I will probably buy dresses to match the suits if the stores carry them. I know I should try to wait until I start working, I am trying to build my wardrobe in advance by shopping the sales. I bought a $158 cocktail dress from Ann Taylor for $5.93. Not bad if I do say so myself!
Bonnie
I probably have more suits than I should, somewhere around 20. I’ve been wearing suits everyday for a few years now so have collected novelty suits (seersucker, tweed, etc) that are seasonal. I started with about 5.

I want to be you when I grow up :)
New Lawyer
Threadjack.
I am moving from City #1 to City #2 in my state. Reasons include 1) current firm is going under; 2) I dislike my practice area; 3) very significant other is moving to city #2 this fall for school (one reason he applied there is so I could have a graceful exit from the firm if we moved); 4) I grew up near city #2 and love it (not a fan of City #2).
I am also trying to transition from litigation to more contract focused/public policy/maybe even management consulting type of work. The issue is that I have only been practicing since November. I just don’t know how much longer my current job is going to exist. It is not looking very promising and I really want to get out while I am employed.
What is an appropriate way to tell the few people I know in and around city #2 that I am looking for a job?
New Lawyer
By “not a fan of City #2” I meant “not a fan of City #1”.
TX Attny
I think telephone calls to friends even during the work day are a great way to reconnect, perhaps setting up coffees or drinks for the weekend if you can easily make it to city #2 for the weekend. Or truly something as simple as letting them know that you get to move back to city #2 (yay!)and are looking for a job doing fill-in-the-blank. If you feel like you risk putting them on the spot and maybe aren’t close enough to do that to them, you could also ask if they know anyone in the fill-in-the-blank field and would they mind it terribly if you called using his/her name so that you can find out more. I suggest seeking ‘informational interviews’ with people your friends might know to show your curiosity and excitement about moving and to rekindle those relationships. (NGDGTCO addresses networking and says something like “by the time you need the network, it’s too late to form the network.”) Are there any association groups you are a part of in city #1 that exist in city #2? That may be another way to transition and meet new people.
New Lawyer
Great ideas, especially the association groups one. Unfortunately I grew up in a small town near City 2 and none of my friends are lawyers, so the rekindling old friendships route is exciting for other reasons but not helpful for the career transition.

Ladies – I am looking for a credit card for hubby’s business use. Do you have any recs for cards with the best travel benefits?

I have Starwood Preferred AMEX, which some travel magazine (I think T+L) ranked as the best travel rewards credit card. You can use the points on hotels in the Starwood Preferred Group (Sheraton/Four Points, Aloft, W, among others) or transfer them to an airline of choice. From what I’ve seen, the points exchange for hotels is pretty reasonable and there are a lot of promotions.

use and love US Bank’s Flexperks VISA. Was the old Northwest Airlines reward card before they were eaten up by Delta and switched to AmEx. Now it’s very easy to accrue and use travel rewards with ANY airline; fewer restrictions/lower “cost” than my frequent flier miles with most airlines.

Far too shiny for me for work. But then, I hate satin generally, so take that into account. Also, it looks very crease-y. The armpit area would look very wrinkled by end of day.
