Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We're always a fan of Boden's somewhat whimsical clothes, and we like this take on the wrap dress. We like the shirt collar, we like the knee length of it, and, for reasons we're not entirely sure we can explain, we like the solid colored banding at the bottom of the dress and the sleeves. We like it best in this dusky blue leaf-pattern, or the red balloon pattern. It's $128 at Bodenusa.com, which now has US sizes 2-18. Very cute! Boden has some really great things and if you sign up for their e-mails, they send lots of discount coupons with free shipping & returns! I just put in my first (huge) order from them. I just got the first two dresses and they definitely run big in US sizes in comparison to places like BR or JCrew so make sure to consult the size chart.
DJ
Their size chart seems totally useless! They have listed:
US size 6 as being a bust of 34 – 35½ , waist of 27 – 28 and hips of 35½ – 37. That’s 1½ in between most of those measurements. That makes a HUGE difference between something fitting well or not at all. Are they saying that if you buy a size 6 in something, it’ll be anywhere in that range and some items will be in one end of it and others in another? How bizarre.
@Jess Can you tell us more about what size you’re at Jcrew or Banana and Boden?
RoadWarriorette
That is so cute! I especially like the red one (or what the website calls pink?). I could see it with solid pumps and a cardigan for work, or maybe boots. Love it!

I have a couple of Boden dresses, all of which fit me well but are definitely longer than I would expect a similarly sized US dress to be, usually hitting just below the knee instead of right at it. (For the record, I am a zero or 2 in the US and ordered size 10 in Boden – probably could have gone one size smaller.)
caesia
I’ve purchased from them and I found the sizing to be pretty accurate, both in how they translate UK sizes into US and the fit of the actual items. You’ll definitely want to read the comments posted on their website (great feature!) since you can get some further insights into the fit. I really love that they offer longer lengths on almost all skirts and dresses. That option is great for those of us that are tall and/or want to ensure that items are work appropriate.

I must be the exception here, I find this too loud

Me too.

Too girlish for me. Wouldn’t play well in Northern California.

I really like this, and just ordered the blue. My wardrobe has gotten so much more fashionable since I started following Corporette!
jwp
I love this and really love it in brown. I would wear it on a more casual day or to church. I wish we didn’t have to have the cami underneath. I think that straight line ruins the look but I don’t like how low those necklines go.
R
Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress snob here. I can’t abide the wrap dress knock-offs.
meg
Can you elaborate on why? What makes DVF so much better to justify the price? I’ve been curious about this for a while…
S
DVF is silk, the quality of the prints, etc. I have one, I love it. But I also have one from banana a few years back that quite frankly i get just as many compliments on.
jcb
Same here. I have a few DVF wrap dresses and the material and prints are definitely way nicer than the knockoffs. They look and feel nicer, the heavy silk hangs better. But I also have a few non-DVF wraps and honestly I end up wearing those more – sometimes you just want a solid instead of a bright print.
S
Good grief.
L
oh please.
besides, just as many people complain about her wrap dresses as praise them.
AN
Agree. I love DvF’s silk jersey and the prints BUT she seems to design for women who are flat-chested. I am a curvy US size 8 and Istruggle with getting the wrap part to lay properly!
R
It’s like any of the fashion originals. A diamond solitaire is lovely, but isn’t it all the more special if it’s Tiffany? Ditto a Burberry trench, Louis Vuitton logo luggage, a Chanel quilted purse, etc. (Since these are out of my price range, I’ll have to revel in my wrap dresses!) I’ve worn knock-off wrap dresses and I feel like an imposter.
MelD
I’m sure all the women with more affordable diamond solitaires will be thrilled that they’re being called impostors, same as the women who dared to buy some other trench coat that wasn’t a Burberry.
Anon
No, I don’t think so. Tiffany didn’t “invent” diamond solitaires, nor did Burberry invent trenchcoats. A piece is a piece is a piece. I can say that emphatically, especially about jewelry, because I come from a family of jewelers. People who buy Tiffany want it because they can they say they have a Tiffany piece. For the money, I’d much rather have a Van Cleef – more imaginitive design for one thing.
But the kind of attitude/pretension represented above always surprises me. Is my wedding set (a 2ct. princess cut solitaire with matching wedding ring) any less “real” because it did not come in a robin’s egg blue box? I think not.
L
Actually, there’s a pretty strong argument that Burberry did in fact invent the trench coat.

JR: I just ordered the dess and I think you so much for the discount information. Corporette women are the best.

Let’s compare notes in a couple of weeks about fit and look. I’d tried the red Talbots one a few weeks ago and it had to go back.
jwp
It came! I ended up getting the blue and I love it. It is really slimming . I am not busty so I won’t need the cami. The fabric is really soft and silky jersey feel. I would wear it to a more causal day in the office (no court or new clients) in the spring with a white cardigan. It’s perfect for church and concerts. I’m going to look for more Boden.
Anne Vohl
Not at all loud. It is beautiful and fun, but extremely retro to the mid-seventies!
L
I just ordered this too. Not sure if the blue will work on me but I really like the boden dresses, good to wear under a jacket @ work. I am 5.8 and usually get the long length.
Liz (Europe)
Looks like my granny’s night dress.
B
Your granny must have excellent taste. =)
Liz (Europe)
No, she just hasn’t updated her wardrobe since the 70’s.

Liked this when I got the catalog a couple of weeks ago – am now in love with their website – did anyone else notice and try the “outfit maker” button – how awesome is that!
jcb
I wasted about .3 on it! Super fun. I had the model in some crazy get-ups.
L
ah, lawyer speak. this made me chuckle.

I really like this dress and I want to order it, but I’m having trouble figuring out what size to buy. I normally wear a US 6 or 8. Some of the comments seem to indicate that Boden’s clothes typically run large however on the website, the customer review indicates that the dress runs true to size. Does anyone have any suggestions?
AIMS
I would say that sizes tend to be either true to size of smaller than “the US average.” If you’re a 6-8 in the more commercial/mainstream US lines (not designer, which usually run smaller), I would go up to 10.
Andye
Boden’s website gives you the actual garment measurements. These are incredibly helpful when you’re trying to figure out which size to order; I wish every website did this.

I agree with the prior assessment of DVF wrap dresses. There just isn’t enough fabric to cover my, um, hourglass curves.
legalicious07
Unfortunately, this is not a dress that looks like it would work for we short women. It’s a little too “loud” for my tastes anyway, but I bet it would look nice on a tall person!
housecounsel
OK, it’s been a while since I tried on DVF dresses so I just went to the NM site to see what’s available right now. I ended up looking at the whole collection. I really do understand paying a premium for a classic DVF silk wrap dress (if you can wear it without being arrested) . . . $245 for a pair of black leggings????

This one is gorgeous. And relatively cheap.

I love wrap jersey dresses. I have a few, and they can work at a wedding, the office, a casual party, with heels, with flats, with sandals, you can totally change them up with a few accessories or none at all. They are forgiving of a few extra pounds and are just perfect. Thanks for this link to another retailer!
Agnes
This dress looks more suited for lunch on the weekend with friends rather than the office.
Sharon
Totally agree. I can’t get over that heart-shaped jewelry is too young, and peep-toes are too outre, but that this is supposedly appropriate office work wear in a corporate or law office. This would be cute to wear to a wedding or baby shower or nice-casual event on the weekends, but it’s very, very young looking and projects no authority. So many of the lawyers on this site say that they want to make sure they project authority. This makes the wearer “cute,” not powerful. Cute is great, but in a different context.
I’d love to see C start to feature some more grown-up looks.
Speaking of which, while I don’t want to comment on politics and just want to keep the conversation about fashion, Nancy Pelosi always strikes me as setting just the right tone with her clothing for her position / stature. Very nicely done, IMO. Others?
legalicious07
I agree with you both. This probably is better suited for a weekend. And, yes, I think Nancy Pelosi dresses appropriately for her age and position. Great example!
L
I think there’s some self-selection going on. You see the dress on the site and the people who click on it have a strong reaction–so far, mostly positive. Most of the people who see it and say “not for my workplace” don’t bother clicking/commenting. I think it’s a nice dress and if I wore it to work (where I would not wear peeptoes and don’t care for heart-shaped jewelry), I’d probably keep it to a late spring/summer Friday.
Radu
Re: Nancy Pelosi. I’m so glad you brought up her name. Last night at the State of the Union Address–did she have on a PERIWINKLE suit? Or does my television picture need tuning? Her necklace matched nicely, and her hair is always fabulous, but periwinkle in 2010? That was my favorite color about 15 years ago. I was disappointed. I found it to be a very distracting color. A nice navy or other shade of blue would’ve been gerat. On the other hand, the first lady’s dress color was right on–perfect plum. Did anyone else have any reactions to Nancy Pelosi’s suit?
Jess
@DJ I usually wear a 14-16 at Banana, but usually closer to a 16. The US 16 (UK 20) from Boden is way too big and the US 14 (UK 18) fits much better.
Amy
I *love* this dress. I ordered it (the only color left was green which I didn’t love on the website but which looks fabulous in person). The dress is super comfortable and TTS. I am a 5’3 and 128 pounds and I ordered a 6. It is a little long but the length makes it appropriate to wear to work on a casual day (or a weekend day at the office). Also so comfy to wear while running errands. Looks great with flats, heals, sandals, and boots (!). Huge fan. Good job Boden and C!
