  • Think it's harder to find quality workwear lately? You're not alone, as Fashionista's Lauren Sherman writes; however, she managed to round up seven retailers (offering a range of prices) who are still go-to sources for professional pieces. P.S. Don't miss the quotes from Kat!
  • While comfortable heels for work do exist, some well-known actresses are kissing high heels goodbye, according to The Huffington Post. Have any of you sworn them off, too?
  • The Atlantic looks at how women may be holding themselves back because of a lack of confidence in their abilities and qualifications; for example, many of us won't apply for a job unless we meet the listed requirements 100%. (Does that sound like you, or do you just go for it?)
  • Forbes compares women in corporate careers and women who are entrepreneurs and also touches on a few points from What Works for Women at Work: Four Patterns Working Women Need to Know by Joan C. Williams and Rachel Dempsey. Meanwhile, The Washington Post has a piece from one of the authors about how women are all too often stuck with “office housework.”

  • We all know that women typically live longer than men, but what does that mean for your life right now? NPR recently spoke to Acting Commissioner of Social Security Carolyn Colvin about women and retirement planning.
  • Speaking of living longer, Hungry Girl offers several useful tips on lowering the sodium in your diet.

  1. Thanks for sharing that NPR coverage – caught the last few seconds of that on the radio and wanted to circle back and check out, perfect. We also have the confidence gap article on our list – that one is really getting great coverage, keep bumping into it.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

  2. I saw that Fashionista article, and cheers for being quoted.

But then they listed companies that are “doing workwear right,” and horrible-quality Ann Taylor is on it! For shame.

  3. I started standing at work about a year ago and have thus pretty much given up heels. I will wear them perhaps once a month when I’m spending the majority of my day a conference, in meetings or other primarily sit-down event. Otherwise, though, heels are out of my rotation, and I’ve been happy. There are some outfits that I think look nicer when I wear them with heels than flats, but those shoes aren’t worth going back to now that I’ve gotten accustomed to standing (and being able to move more quickly through the halls and stairwells).

  4. I hardly wear heels anymore. With long days and lots of running around, I’ve had enough. Also, I’ve noticed that heel heights keep getting higher. Argh.

As far as the Atlantic article, I’ve noticed that conversely, women are held to a higher standard than men. It becomes an excuse to not hire a woman because she doesn’t fit the job description 100%. It’s frustrating.
