not ready for my close-up
I just found out that a presentation I am giving will be held in a TV studio, recorded, and distributed in a variety of ways. I would like to avoid looking like an idiot. Although I do plenty of public speaking, I have zero experience being filmed. Help? What kind of suit should I wear? Or am I better off wearing a sheath dress like a news anchor? Makeup? Tips for appearing confident and in command while on camera?
Been There
This happened to me once and I was a little freaked out. My first thought was, “I’d better have someone to do my hair and nails!” (Funny enough, I was joking but they gave me budget anyhow. Glad I mentioned it!) If I were to do this again, I’d switch from a suit (looked a little stiff) to a sheath dress, comfortable shoes (I had to stand for almost 8 hours to complete the session), and comfortable but sturdy underpinnings. I was in good shape at the time but still could see my bra line around my rib cage. Wish I’d had a Spanx-type full slip on. For makeup, you may want to use a slightly heavier hand than usual, especially your eyes, but your normal color palette is probably best. Don’t over-use your blush – it might look feverish. Most importantly, of course, is to be very comfortable with the content so you can slow down and speak clearly but naturally. Look at the camera, but with a normal gaze and not staring. Remember to blink. And breathe. It’s great that you’ve got the public speaking experience. Once you get going, it will probably feel natural.
I thought it was fun – hope you do too! Good luck!

If you can cut back on drinking, you aren’t an alcoholic. The recent AA bashing is very depressing.

This is all lovely stuff, but far too easy to let it all bite into working time!
