What current looks will be dated quickly, do you think? What looks from previous years did you think were classic looks, but now feel extremely dated?
Readers were talking about the sheath dress we posted yesterday — I still think it's a classic look for a certain situation, but it's certainly less common than it was in years past.
I've noticed a lot of comedic memes making fun of clothing from the early-aughts — the way we wore blazers everywhere, including while out to brunch, the huge sock buns, the cheap statement necklaces… it's really funny having lived through those days because it didn't feel like “wow this is such a 2010 look” but… of course it is.
These days I think it's going to be the wide leg, baggy denim and the cropped sweater — as well as the sneakers-with-everything trend. (And the calf-height socks with bare legs!)
Readers, how about you? What 2025 looks do you think will be quickly dated? Are you leaning into them to have fun while they're trendy, or choosing to opt out if you don't like the style?
(Related question: does it feel like trends are moving more quickly, at least in terms of how quickly things get outdated?)
Poofy poofy sleeves on cropped tops in particular.
Barrel pants. The look is so tragic. Why would anyone want to have an illusion of bowed legs.
Yes! Truly the worst jeans ever!
This! They make the wearer look like a 1930’s cowboy!
yes! i was walking behind someone wearing them just the other night and had to remind myself that she probably paid good money for them and did not dig them out of her closet from the 90s
Yeah I hate these at a visceral level. Talk about fashion victim.
There’s literally nothing wrong with wearing trends that will look dated in several years. That’s the point of following fashion. I always imagined a cardigan twin set was classic, but there was a recent thread talking about how 90s that was. So I can’t think of anything that won’t be dated. Please name something that is truly classic that isn’t also incredibly boring.
I think “quickly” was the key concept here.
Quickly is exactly the key word. Following every dumb trend w no eye towards longevity is just shouting to the world “I don’t care about money.”
i think this look would have worked pretty much every year I’ve been alive:

Pants legs with ginormous volume.
Ditto blazers.
Cropped top and high waist sweats in athleisure. I’m so tired of wide cropped sweatshirts. As someone who carries their weight in their middle, it’s ridiculously unflattering.
I think long suit jackets will also look extremely dated soon.
I only like cropped items because I’m short enough that they are scaled to my size. Especially with some sweatshirts (I do not get the boob-length sweatshirts).
sheer tops and the vests
All the hyper unflattering trends will fade quickly. We don’t have to go all the way back to bodycon, but fashion has always swung back to traditional figure flattery, and will again.
To the “cardigan twin sets are so 90s” people. Look how cardigans have evolved over the decades. A cardigan is always going to be around, but in 30 years, someone is going to say the same about today’s “lady sweater with a crew tee” as our time’s twin set.
