I don’t know about a colour changing bag. Though up here in the Great White North it might be cool to see what happens to it across the seasons.

I feel like in Wisconsin it would turn blue or silver in December and stay that way until April.

My childhood color changing dolls would, in hot summers, become permanently garish. (http://www.dollinfo.com/mlilmiss80.htm)

This bad reminds me of those hyper colors shirts. Awesome.
Ladies, I need some help. Going anon to try and not out myself here. Let’s say person X is trying to escape paying money in a divorce. He is part of a family business. Claims he borrows money from that business. Doesn’t pay “loan” back and then has business obtain judgment against him on default. Is there an agency one can report that to? There has to be, right? But is it consumer fraud even though there is no “consumer” here? The hurt party is just the spouse and kids, and obviously he is using courts in a way that is very fraudulent… But the action is over so spouse cannot intervene, right?
Anon
It sounds like you need to talk to a lawyer. Your scenario is far too vague for anyone to give you an answer online that you can rely upon
A Clark
Fraudulent conveyance. A fake loan with a default judgment sounds like it could qualify–but you definitely need a lawyer who practices in your state to spend some time looking into it.
anon
I agree you should consult a lawyer but my anecdata suggests that using a family business to artificially lower your salary/net worth, etc. to avoid paying child support or money in a divorce is not uncommon. This seems pretty similar.
Anonymous
My anecdata data agree but also suggest that if the divorce is not yet final, the ex-spouse may be able to obtain a portion of the business (if spouse is part-owner) as part of the settlement. It won’t fix the issue, but may get them something.
TJ
Yes, and all that is going on, too. But this seems more egregious because he is using the courts to essentially help him with this scheme. It’s one thing to say “oops, my salary is now 50% less” or to sell your car to a cousin for $5, and another to file false documents and use the courts this way. FWIW, there is a matrimonial lawyer involved but he is not interested in pursuing this beyond arguing that all the debts are marital waste as part of trial. I just can’t believe this can be done with no consequences from authorities.
ebola
My anxiety is out of control about Ebola. Coworkers have been joking about it (“I feel sick — must be Ebola”) and I can’t stand it. I know there’s no point in worrying about what I can’t control… but should I be worried anyway? Are you?
Parfait
Have you touched the bodily fluids of anybody with ebola? Then no.
Be worried about the flu and take the same precautions that sensible people do in flu season.

lol, thanks for this.
No, not worried about ebola, but more than a little mystified how this guy wasn’t hospitalized sooner. Seriously, if I just flew in from Liberia and I started having those symptoms, I would walk myself into the ER and demand ZMapp. There would be no “I was in Africa, but that’s not important. Oh thanks, I’ll take the antibiotics and pain meds and go home. Perfect!”
LF
I understand that the treatment team at the hospital was informed of the patient’s travel history, and the patient was sent home anyway. The patient’s family had to notify the CDC that they didn’t think the patient had received appropriate care from the hospital. So… if that was in fact the case, I think it’s on the hospital.
Wildkitten
He told the hospital and they sent him home anyway due to a miscommunication. And the dude is not American. He got Ebola by helping someone who was also turned away at the hospital, and died as a result, at home. He may not have had the privilege of knowing to show up at any ER and refuse to leave until he got Zmapp.
Anon
No. Stay away from bodily fluids of people you dont know and you’ll be fine. But you probably do this anyway, right?
My answer will change if it mutates and becomes airbourne.
Unicorn
“Stay away from bodily fluids of people you dont know”
This is my general approach to life.
tesyaa
Well, if that’s the case taking the subway might not be the best idea. Things are better than they were in the early 80s, but I don’t think bodily fluids have been entirely eradicated.

I’m fairly certain I saw a blood bag from a hospital stuck on a pole in the subway a couple months ago. Not surprisingly there was nobody in that section of the train.

According to Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, it is very unlikely that the Ebola virus will mutate to become airborne. It’s just not how viruses really change. Think of HIV – it’s been around for a quite a while and has been transmitted to quite a few million people, but still is only transmitted by direct contact, not even by mosquitoes!
So yeah, unless you had contact with that guy in Dallas, I wouldn’t worry too much.
Ellen
My dad say’s that nobody is smart enough to give answers yet. After all the hospital turned away a guy who told them he was in LIBERIA, and did not feel good. It was ONLEY after his relative called the CDC to complain that he got admitted by the hospital. By then he had contact with a lot of people. THAT IS DUMB.
Also, DR Oz was on TV today telling us that the virus could MUTATE, and he does NOT know what that would do if it doe’s. That is scarey. Dad say’s that NO ONE should be allowed into this country for over 21 days after they come out of the EBOLA zone. So if they go to Europe first, they MUST stay there for 21 days away from other people. Dad also said that people coming out of the EBOLA zone should be abel to travel freely to the ISIS/ISIL zone and stay there.
This is a far bigger issue then people think. Personaly, I will NOT buy food from some vendor’s and take out places any more b/c I am afraid some of them do NOT wash their hand’s and they have a lot of bodily fluid’s on their hand’s. Dad say’s that maybe I will finaly learn to cook, and if I do, I should have another skill that will attract a guy to MARRY me! I want to get MARRIED now, so I do not have to get all these construction guy’s yelling at me to show them more skin. That is gross. Once I do get married, I can just stay at home and cook and watch TV and tend to the children we will have. YAY!!!!!!!
tesyaa
My teen daughter was a little anxious about Ebola too, but her biology teacher showed the class a video explaining how it spreads and doesn’t spread. Look for similar educational materials and I think you’ll feel better.
If I were anxious about anything, it would be about the enterovirus that’s producing respiratory problems and causing polio-like symptoms, because that seems to actually be fairly widespread.
And FWIW, I did get my flu shot already.
Anonymous
I am extremely worried about this. I have a 7 month old in day care and she’s had a cold off and on for two weeks. I am monitoring her breathing closely, of course, but she’s so little that I am very worried.
tesyaa
Well, regular cold viruses are still doing their thing. I have a few kids (older) with mild asthma, so if they get colds I’ll be watching them too.
Medic Maggie
youngest son who is 4 displayed symptoms of enterovirus 2 weeks ago. Doc confirmed his suspicion, but no actual test. Strep test was negative, but fever was persistent for 4 days. Cough still lingering (showed up on Friday Sept. 26), and snotty nose.
Don’t fuss the colds too much (fluids & snot-sucker). The fever is what sets it apart from colds. But, it could also be a sign of early flu.
Oldest son has food allergies & reactive-airway disorder, so we watch him closely during this time of year too. He picked up the cold, but despite his younger brother’s best efforts, didn’t get the fever/virus.
Katie
No. Even if you were to miraculously contract it (assuming you live in a place with modern medicine), you’d be perfectly fine. Turn off the cable news and start worrying about car accidents and heart disease.
Anon
Not worried. Here’s what you should do:
1. Breathe–it’s not transmitted through air
2. Try not to swap bodily fluids with an infected ebola patient
3. Avoid handling infected needles and syringes (a good rule of thumb in most situations)
JJ
Are you in Dallas? I think it’s at least a little more understandable if you’re here. I *know* that Ebola is only contracted through bodily fluids (for now), but I still had a momentary twinge of “omg, maybe that stomach flu my husband has isn’t just a stomach flu! And my kids!”
I think it’s just a natural reaction, but the best you can do it wash your hands a lot, sanitize stuff often, and don’t touch strangers’ bodily fluids (also because, eww).
HM
I live in Dallas, and traveling from DC with my infant daughter at the same time as this fellow (he apparently landed there first before flying on to DFW). We also are active in a Church with a large African immigrant community. I have momentary twinges that we are somehow at risk, but then remember it is improbable we will contract it. I’m still taking a “no touching strangers” approach with my daughter, but that’s actually more for the risk of RSV or the flu than ebola.
It is hard not to get sucked down the rabbit hole, though.
Anonymous
I’m not worried for the reasons already mentioned. Also, from what I’ve read in several sources, the high death rate in other countries seems to stem from a couple of contributing factors 1) lack of proper medical care/facilities (not as much of a factor in the US) and 2) some societal stigma surrounding the disease that dissuades people from getting treatment timely or at all.
I’m more concerned about getting sick from whatever my child brings home from the petri dish that is elementary school.
Anon
No, I’m not worried for all the reasons stated above. Do you have issues with anxiety in general?
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul
This kind of anxiety sounds like my kind of anxiety about medical issues and health stuff before I went on an SSRI and started seeing a therapist. If you start feeling like this about a lot of other stuff in your life it couldn’t hurt to talk to someone. :)
Medic Maggie
Advice from a medic: if it’s wet and it’s not yours, don’t touch it.
In all seriousness, we take precautions daily with what we do, and there are still chances for transmission. The average citizen really doesn’t need to take any special measures other than good handwashing and other general hygiene. Period.
There are far more easily-transmittable diseases that we should be concerned with (that are sometimes just as dangerous), that don’t get better attention. Norovirus, enterovirus, whooping cough, rotavirus, MRSA, TB, the flu. The Flu.
Mpls
I wouldn’t worry about Ebola, but I would think about getting a whooping cough booster (I think some flu shots are including those now? Or maybe it was shingles vaccinations), given the outbreaks occurring in areas with reduced vaccination levels.
houda
in my country all of these basic diseases vaccinations are mandatory.
Getting children in schools is obligatory and no child would be admitted unless they have the full list of all vaccinations. Whooping cough and measles and stuff like that does not occur. (but then again we don’t care about vaccines side effects).
tesyaa
Whooping cough vaccine wears off, so my cousin ( who was vaccinated as a child) got sick with it in her 50s).
houda
I am a germophobe and hypochondriac since childhood so I have memorized long ago that unless it mutates to become airborne, I’m fine with respect to ebola as long as I don’t touch people and wash my hands all the time (yes sweat counts as a body fluid)
immune
I am not worried in the least that I will contract ebola because I spent 5 minutes reading about how it is transmitted, how it kills its victims and how often, and why the epidemic is so terrible in West Africa.
I am much more disturbed by the truly horrifying conditions people are enduring over there. The NYT had a very sobering article about it today (“A Hospital from Hell”) that will make you deeply grateful that you live in the first world. Let that ease your anxieties.
Spirograph
Yes to deep gratitude for living in the first world. The stories coming out of West Africa are heartbreaking. I read an article about ebola orphans the other day that made me want to cry and adopt all the babies.
Kensington
Too bad Liberia has a longstanding moratorium on international adoptions. Maybe they will change their minds when the outbreak settles down.
Anonymous
Yes. Because giving all your babies to white people is clearly the only option. Maybe they think enough Africans have been sent over here?

Paging Baconpancakes:
I used your recipe for acorn squash with corn pudding for dinner last night and it was a big hit in our house! Thanks for sharing!

Yay, I’m glad! The different flavors make it way more interesting! (I also put it in a small pumpkin and was very impressed by the flavors that played in that.)

I have done sauteed mushrooms & onions baked in an acorn squash before. Topped with gruyere cheese & broiled. So tasty. I have also most recently added in crumbled cooked breakfast sausage. Thanks for calling attention to this recipe that I didn’t see the other day! I found it!

Whoa, gruyere? You just blew my mind.

How does sizing for classiques entier dresses compare to BR or jcrew?
Orangerie
Normally a bit large; I usually take my J.Crew size -1 in CE stuff. Some styles are cut a bit slimmer, however, so I’d recommend ordering two sizes to try if you have the option to do so.

Threadjack: How do you all handle the feminist rage that may bubble up inside you from time to time? Yesterday I was doing phone duty at work in a context where I was introduced to callers as “Title Lastname” (think “Officer Krupke” or “Senator Clinton”), and on four separate occasions the caller was connected and said “Hello, Sir.” Then I posted a picture on Facebook of me and my (all-female) design-build team and a male friend posted a comment about “I can see design, but build?” and it. just. pissed. me. off. (There’s more, of course, but these are the small incidents that set me off.) And today when I vented to a very close male friend, he did. not. get. it. at. all. and just said “well, I don’t think getting mad helps anything,” which of course made me more enraged.
Gah. Does this ever happen to you? I keep it inside as best I can, but man. Sometimes being a woman is just… enraging. I totally get that these are total first-world problems and in every way except my sex I am about as privileged it’s possible to be. But today I want to chew nails and spit them out….
sentinel
Yeah, I have those moments sometimes. Usually I end up ranting to DH or my father (we’re very close) about it. They’re totally on my side, though. I do have a female friend that I occasionally vent to, and she vents back at me and we usually feel better afterward.
Or you could try running. I hate-run a lot.
Anon
I call them out on it. In a joking way, something like “What do you mean by ‘you can’t see build?'” and when they attempt to explain, “oh, so you think women are too stupid to do that, is that it?” until they see the hole they have dug themselves into. Sometimes people say things without thinking about them and the implications of it doesn’t quite sink in, but they’ll get it pretty quickly when you say something. If they don’t get it, I don’t really want to be their friend.
Senior Attorney
Yeah. I responded to the “Hello, Sirs” (all from men) with a cheery “Hello, Ma’am,” and that seemed to be a good option for educating without alienating. I decided to just ignore Mr. “Can’t see ‘build,'” because of my ironclad no-arguing-on-Facebook rule, but I pointedly “liked” every comment in the thread except his.
Hate-running sounds good, too.

Ladies,
My _best_ friend just found out she has a huge uterine tumor and it is possible that everything needs to come out. She’s mid-late thirties, single. Please share any resources or helpful books for fertility preservation and/or early menopause.
Thank you hive! I want to help as much as I can from across the country. My heart is breaking for the family she may not ever have (although both I and her amazing SIL immediately offered to be surrogates, if we can get some eggs or embryos…too soon to know).
Thanks again.
anon
Hard to know without the facts, but in my experience (years of involvement in the infertility/surrogacy community) something can generally be done to preserve eggs if she’s invested in genetic children. Generally if the ovaries are removed, it’s for fear of ovarian cancer which may later develop — it is hard to detect early and *very* dangerous, as cancer goes. However, most people can take the few weeks to months required to bank frozen eggs, if they want to, without incurring much risk, even after the uterus comes out. There is an organization called Fertile Hope that may be able to help financially. Think $7500-$10K per egg banking cycle (insurance very rarely covers fertility preservation). Some people need one cycle, some need a few. She’s a good age for it. A responsible doctor will be able to give her an idea of how many eggs to bank based on her test results and her future family building plans. And I know a few good clinics that will put someone in her position at the front of the line so she can cycle as quickly as possible, rather than e.g. going on bcp for a few months to wait for a spot on the IVF schedule. As she is single, she will need to decide whether she wants to freeze eggs to thaw later for use with a male partner, or get a sperm donor and freeze embryos (or both). Luckily, egg freezing has taken a huge huge leap forward in the past five years so she is not at a disadvantage by choosing to freeze eggs only, as used to be the case (they didn’t used to thaw as well, but now thaw rates are comparable).
MJ
Thank you–she really appreciated this perspective!
Shopping help!
So, I’m looking for help with two things. First, can we compile a list of stores that always list dress lengths? In particular, I’m looking for dresses no shorter than 40 inches. Here’s what I’ve got so far:
1. Boden
2. Nordstrom
3. Zappos
4. 6pm
5. Overstock
Second request: I need to do a major stock up of underwear. I only like bikini style and prefer cotton or modal-not polyester/spandex/etc. I also want to be able to machine wash (can be on delicate) and dry…I can’t deal with hand washing and line drying undies. Also, no lace. I did buy (and am keeping) a Felina bikini but only realized after I wore it (super comfy btw!) that it requires special care. Spent $18 on it, am ideally really looking to spend in the $10 range per pair, since I need to buy a lot. My old go-to was VS way back when before they changed their cotton bikinis (about 5 years ago). Since they changed the cut and fabric, I’ve been struggling to find a new favorite.
Thanks in advance!!
Anonymous
Gap. They win at balancing fiber content, cuteness, and cost for a basic bikini. I haven’t bought for a year or two, but they had cotton at the time.
I’ve also been happy with Jockey, although they are plain and decidedly practical.
If you said no lace because you want to machine wash, then check out Soma …I think the line is embraceable?… I give my underwear absolutely no special treatment on laundry day, and they hold up beautifully, wear like granny panties, but still are s*xy enough to thrill my husband. Often on sale for well below your price point. They are the reason that I haven’t bought from Gap recently.
Brit
For underwear, I absolutely swear by Jockey bikinis – they have other styles too. Any major department store I’ve been in usually has a three pack from $18 and they’re not excluded when they do the major coupons. 100% cotton and machine wash/dry and I love them.
Anonymous
Op here. Thanks, guys! I will try Gap…I think I had jockey in the past but didn’t like how it fit me personally.
