I've been on the hunt for better ways to organize my charging cables and things like that — by my bedside table rather than on my desk — and this is one good option I found in my search. It's worth checking out if you want to organize a kitchen or office or other room (New Year's resolution, perhaps?). This organizer, which has three USB ports and a USB cable, has room for business cards, paperclips, pushpins, and pens/pencils — and you can charge a tablet and phone at the same time. It looks great, and it's only $20.49 at Amazon, where it's eligible for Prime. All-in-One Desk Organizer & Docking Station

Financial advice appreciated. We have a HHI of $450k. I have about $80k left in student loans at 4% interest rate. After paying property taxes and one home improvement project in the next month or so, we will have about $60k in cash savings. Just found out I am getting my bonus (roughly $55k after taxes) and a salary bump at the end of this month. We’re debating whether to throw the $55k in a lump sum toward my outstanding loans, or to put it into mutual funds and make a big push this year to wipe out my loans (e.g. putting $5-6k/month toward them). Is this a situation where it doesn’t really matter, or would you prefer the additional financial security of putting the $55k in mutual funds and wiping out the loans over the course of a year? Psychologically I feel like putting the lump sum toward my loans will be great, but want to make sure I’m not missing something.
Anon
I’d do the loans.
Anon
Clarification: You have 60k in cash savings outside of your emergency fund? If not, I’d hold that and the bonus for emergency fund because 60k is quite a bit low for a HHI that high unless you just live really really frugally far below your means.
anonforthis
No, the 60k is our emergency fund (it’s higher now because we’re holding the property taxes and home improvement fund in it). We could stretch $60k to cover 6 months expenses if we had to, but I take your point … I like the idea of adding the $55k to the $60k in cash. With my salary bump we can still try to pay down the loans this year.
Anonymous
I’d pay off the loans. It was such a huge stress relief to have that gone. Put next year’s bonus into mutual funds.
Angela
Pay off the loans and resolve to put what would have been your monthly loan payment into the mutual funds.
Anonymous
+1 to the above. The psychological benefit of paying off such a huge loan (plus the saved interest) is worth it. Or, you could split it and pay $35K to loans and save $20k if that makes you feel better.

Sorry to the people who are sick of royals discussion :) But I thought this was really interesting to see how the tabloids treated Kate and Meghan so differently, and held Meghan to a demonstrably higher standard, even over the silliest things, like her enjoyment of avocados. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ellievhall/meghan-markle-kate-middleton-double-standards-royal (To be clear, I like both women, and this isn’t intended to be a slam at Kate at all. But I feel like there’s clearly a double standard in the press treatment and this article makes it very obvious.)
Anonymous
Yes! I saw that article. Not a slam at Kate at all, it just shows the totally different approach the press has towards Meghan.
Anonymous
This is great – especially the bump and avocado treatment. So obvious the racism that the media displays towards Meghan. With regard to the whole thing (even on here!!) I really feel like Meghan and Harry are justified. With the amount of vilifying the media did to their they can totally just be like well you ran us out of town, good riddance.
Anon
It is racism, but also sexism. Kate got picked apart for the silliest things too until Meghan was in the picture, and then suddenly Kate was the golden daughter-in-law. They won’t stop being nasty to one woman until they have another woman to destroy. I saw something online that said things will only improve for Meghan when Prince George gets a girlfriend for them to tear apart, and sadly I think there’s a lot of truth to that.
Anonymous
I suspect the York girls and Zara Tindall will start getting a lot more coverage now to fill the tabloid gap.
Anonymous
The press were definitely horrible to both, particularly Meaghan, but I also remember feeling really bad for Kate about the topless photos thing. Not surprising they left given how awful the press has been to Meaghan. That said, a lot of the newsworthiness/interest around them quitting was that they didn’t 100% quit but instead made it sound like a part-time thing which hasn’t been done successfully before and appeared to announce it without working out the details first. Hope they’ve got it sorted now. In Canada, they are likely to be safer from the paparazzi/tabloids but as a Canadian, I’m annoyed that we might get stuck with security bills for non-official duty time here.
Anon
I think Meghan has been treated abominably by the British press, and I totally understand the impulse to be like “I don’t need this, I’m out,” but the implication that the British press has always loved Kate and hated Meghan from the get go is very 1984 “we have always been at war with Eastasia” to me. Kate was torn apart from roughly 2004 to 2016, when they got a new punching bag. And there was almost a year, from the engagement to roughly the tour of Australia/NZ, where Meghan was the glamorous, shiny, loved- by-everyone including the corgis, singlehandedly fixing Harry’s relationship with Charles princess while Kate was dumpy and boring and on maternity leave. I get what Buzzfeed was doing here, but I don’t think you get the same outcome if you limit headlines about Kate to only the first year or two of marriage.

Coach Laura
I was just coming here to post that article! I had heard that Meghan’s coverage was biased (and believed it) and figured it was hatred of Americans or racial bias but hadn’t had the means to prove it. The examples are so absurd that it would be funny…except it’s not. Kate may not have had an easy time but since Meghan was disclosed, Meghan has had nothing but bad press or at least biased press. I’m not a big TV watcher and didn’t know who Meghan was at all before she started dating Harry but I do enjoy the good things about the monarchy and have always somewhat admired William and Harry. So I’m not an ordinary Meghan fan, but more of an unbiased observer. Glad that they can carve out their own family life and the Queen graciously gave in today.

A good friend from college is nearing her 1-year sobriety anniversary. We’ve reconnected in the last year and I’m really proud of her. I want to send her something – needs to be mailed. Budget about $35. She’s outdoorsy – lives near mountains, has two dogs, and has a niece she’s trying to spend more time with. Niece is in preschool. Any gift ideas?

What makes a good guest bathroom? I am moving to a 2 bath apartment and want to make a nice space for when family/close friends stay. So far on my list is: comfy towels, a plunger, nice TP, memory foam bath rug, a small container with oft-forgotten items like extra toothbrushes, razors, etc.
When you’re a guest at a friend’s home, do you prefer white or not-white towels? Do you like it when there is shampoo and body wash in the shower?
AnonInfinity
I like having washcloths and face/hand towels that aren’t white, actually. I feel really bad when I’m trying to wash my makeup off and I get some mascara or foundation on the washcloth.
I also do like body wash in the shower because I don’t always remember that. For me, shampoo isn’t useful because I have a Hair Routine that shall not be upended.

Put some basic cleaning supplies in the cabinet or linen closet. (Bowl brush, toilet cleaner, disinfectant wipes, glass cleaner, paper towels.) Sometimes a guest may make a mess that he/she’d like to clean instead of leaving for the homeowner. Be sure to stock extra toilet tissue, too! I like having a small clock in the bathroom for early morning “how much time do I have?” checks.
CHS
Extra tp! Nothing stresses me out more than just seeing one roll in the bathroom, or finding out at an inopportune moment that there is no extra in the bathroom. I would love to see a stack or pile under the cabinet just for the assurance :)
Worry About Yourself
Cups! I like being able to use a cup when I rinse and spit after brushing my teeth, and I do use a reusable one at home but they can be so awkward to pack, having a little dispenser or Dixie cups, or if you prefer, a few plastic reusable cups with a note promising they’ve been washed thoroughly, is a great thing to have. I also like to keep extra toothbrushes and little travel-sized deodorants on hand in case someone needs one. Pads and tampons could be a big plus as well! And makeup removing cloths could be useful, especially if you want to preserve your guest pillowcases.
Any color towel is fine as long as they’re in good condition and don’t smell weird. White towels would require a ton of maintenance because any “mystery” stains might make people uncomfortable. No one wants to play Why Is It Brown?
I usually bring my own body wash and shampoo when I travel, but it may be a nice idea to have some in there. Just maybe pick something on the inexpensive end, so that if it does go unused, you won’t feel like you wasted a ton of money. I made this mistake getting nice men’s shampoo and conditioner for any, ahem, male suitors who may wish to shower at my place, they barely got used and it felt like a waste when I chucked them in a massive purge.
This also may be a good use for any of those little sample packets of cosmetics, shampoo, and skincare stuff you get from Sephora, Ulta, etc. that you have no real use for.

I make sure my guest bathroom has self-serve access (read: I never need to know if you took advantage or not!) to:
shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, travel sized deodorant, contact lens solution, nail clippers and files, q-tips, chap stick, tweezers, feminine supplies, toilet paper extras, a trashcan, plunger/brush, cleaning supplies (…we just keep them all in that bathroom, so not intentional), non-white face towels and white body towels, matches, basic OTC drugs (naproxen, pepto and tums, alka seltzer), hairspray, toothpaste and a pack of toothbrushes, bathmat.
Seems like a lot. But it some of it lives in the shower and never gets moved, some I bought in travel or pack sizes and don’t take up space, and some is just where stuff lives to begin with so it’s not extra. For things like q-tips and bandaids, we just pulled some out of our regular stash.

Client hired me to give a respectful workplace/anti-sexual harassment training to several hundred employees (blue-collar, 99% male workforce). These guys will be in steel toe boots and coveralls. We’ll be rotating them in and out of an auditorium space and I don’t need to wear any PPE. Any suggestions for attire? I normally wear a skirt suit or dress to work. Sheath dress in a lighter (i.e. non black or dark navy) color with a non matching but coordinating blazer with modest heels. You need to look more formal but not “I’m going to an interview” suit formal. Yes you’re the lawyer but you’re also a professional talking to blue collar works so you need to know your audience, a suit is just too formal for the occasion. I’d say you could even get away with crisps slacks, heeled boots, and an “office sweater” (think fitted, neutral color with maybe layered over a collared shirt.
Jules
I do lots of meetings and presentations in front of rooms full of blue collar men. For this, I would not go full matching suit but definitely recommend a jacket or blazer, with whatever other non-matching separates you’re comfortable with (sheath dress, skirt, pants). Somehow, it just feels more authoritative to me.

How much time do you spend cleaning for the cleaning service? If you’ve cut it down substantially, how do you save time?
Biweekly cleanings, 4000sf house, 2 small kids — my partner and i each spend 2-4 hours clearing surfaces before the service comes
Anon
None. This idea has always sort of baffled me. Some weeks our house is clean and doesn’t really need cleaning, but the ladies still come, and some weeks it’s like a tornado hit our house and they’re still there. I figure it evens out. I pay more than what she asked for ($20 more per visit), tip very generously around the holidays, pay her anyways when our day falls on a holiday and I tell her she doesn’t need to come, offer her extra produce from our garden, and recommend her to friends often. She, in turn, does super kind things for me like fold that basket of clean laundry I’ve been meaning to get to and makes a neat pile of any crap laying around.
Mrs. Jones
I spend 5 maybe 10 minutes picking up stuff that’s where they need to clean (like removing toiletries from sink, putting away dishes).
AnonInfinity
Sometimes about 5 minutes– 2300 sq ft home with a partner and dogs. My housekeeper knows she can put things away if they’re in the way, and we don’t really care if they’re in the right “spot”. Usually the misplaced item is reasonably close to where we left it, so we don’t spend much time looking for anything. If she’s really lost, she’ll leave an errant item on a very obvious place, like in the middle of the dining table. We do spend about 10 mins every day or two putting stuff away. My philosophy is that I have a house cleaner to make my life easier, and cleaning before she comes is stressful, so I’m just not going to do that. Even if the house isn’t as clean as it would have been if I were perfectly organized, it’s about a million times cleaner than I would have gotten it.
anne-on
2-4 hours the day before? Or weekly? I would say that I need to wipe down counter tops after every meal, and then clean more thoroughly after I cook. So maybe, 30-45 minutes a day? (5 after breakfast, lunch, dinner, and then another 15 to wipe down the stove/counters, and wash pots and my good knives?).
I think the only ‘secret’ is to just embrace cleaning as you go and the ‘good enough’ clean – ie, I’ll do 15 minutes before I sit down for the night, and get to what you can get to in that time.
mascot
Moving our service to a weekly cleaning helped. We just don’t have as much time to pile up stuff. Some rooms don’t get cleaned if they are too messy (like the playroom or my office) and we wait until the next week to have them cleaned. What does your daily cleaning routine look like? Can you do a 15 minute de-clutter each evening? Have the kids tidy their rooms? Clear mail and paper from the counters within a day or so of it coming in the house?
Anonymous
That’s insane just stop
Anon
No time pre-cleaning, but I do spend time putting things in their places because my cleaner tends to leave things where she thinks they should go and I go crazy if I can’t find things. That’s why I like having the same cleaner so we establish some norms. Clothes on the floor go to the hamper, clothes over the chair are put on hangers and hung up, shoes in the closet, loose papers are gathered together and left in a pile. She knows all of this and it greatly reduced decluttering time.
Anon
30-45 minutes? Biweekly cleanings, 2300 square foot house, two toddlers. I mostly pick up clothes from the closet floor and kids’ toys from the living room and playroom floors. I do it mostly for my own benefit – cleaning service either won’t clean or will put things in the wrong place. I could definitely spend less time on it if I spent more time tidying up every day, but I’m too lazy for that – this works out to less than three minutes a day and I doubt I’d spend less than that on daily tidying.
AFT
Approximately this – but with the 30-45 minutes split between me and husband. Also some yelling at kids to put away any legos they want kept :)
Two adults, two elementary aged kids, ~2500 sq ft house, weekly cleanings. Our cleaning lady is our former nanny who has seen us at our worst – it’s not worth pretending that we’re anything other than disasters.
Anonymous
we’re slobs — kids leave toys on floor everywhere, we all leave clothes on floor. pretty much every counter covered in crap (toothbrushes, makeup, bottles in bathroom — food stuff in kitchen). toys in tub. we probably spend 15-60 daily doing/sorting laundry, putting away dishes, wiping main dining table down, trying to organize any disaster messes involving glitter, paint, puzzle pieces etc.
CountC
10 minutes of tidying up so they can generally get to the surfaces and spaces that they need to. My house is 1/3 of the size of yours, but if I spent an hour cleaning up for the service, I would stop paying the service.
CountC
This doesn’t change whether they come monthly or every other week. No kids, two small dogs, and a cat.
Anonymous
Either figure out how to keep stuff more tidy in between cleanings or pay extra so you don’t have to do so much.
It’s just me and I probably spend about 30 minutes cleaning for the cleaners – that includes emptying and reloading the dishwasher so there are no dishes in the sink (I could pay extra for them to do dishes), putting away the crock pot or whatever is on the kitchen counter, gathering the shoes I’ve kicked off all over the house, folding and putting away laundry that’s on the drying rack (I could pay them for this), and putting away my makeup, jewelry, and whatever else is on my bathroom sink. If this sounds like you x4 then either learn better habits (like, put things away after you use them, and enlist the kids to do that too) or accept that you’re not going to learn better habits and just spend more money on your cleaning service.
Anon
Two to four hours?? Granted, your house is five times bigger than mine but I certainly don’t spend even 1/5 the amount of time on that. I think you have too many surfaces to clear!
Anonymous
1-2 hours each person. Three kids and 3000sq ft. I use the pre-cleaners tidy as a chance to sort school paperwork/kids art etc into save/toss piles.
Angela
Yeah, none. They move the things off our counters to clean then put them back in place. Ditto for picking stuff up off the floor, etc.
anon
That’s a lot of time cleaning for the cleaners. 2 adults, 2 kids in our house. 2,700 square feet, biweekly cleanings. Our checklist the night before is:
– if dishes are still in the sink, make sure they’re washed
– pick up toys in playroom
– kids tidy their rooms if needed
– clear away anything that has piled up on the kitchen table
In all, I’d say we spent 30 minutes tidying up, tops. And some of these things wouldn’t necessarily *have* to be done, but it’s a preference. My best advice would be to make sure you’re regularly putting things away so they don’t pile up.
Anonymous
Forever. But I have 3 kids under 6 that are home during the week (nanny/part time preschool). Cleaning day is Thursday and I spend Tuesday and Wednesday nights getting ready ;). I make DH help on Wednesday.
If I don’t clean first, they just shove everything over as they can clean. Which is fine, I then just have to spend Thursday night putting away every pile in the house
Anonymous
Oh my! 2-4 hours per person each week is as long as my cleaner’s team spends cleaning the house.
I have a smaller house than you, but I’m in a 3 story 4 br 3.5ba house with two kids. I spend maybe 15 minutes the night before our cleaner comes making sure we don’t have random clutter in the way. We put things away as we go. Other than doing a slightly more vigorous clean up after cooking dinner the night before a visit, I don’t pre-clean.

I also posted this on the mom’s page, but hoping maybe someone here will see it, too:
Has anyone here adopted internationally? Our agency is requiring us to join two in-person adoptive family support groups. I’m not doing that because 1) they don’t exist here and 2) time. So I’m looking for online FB groups. Bonus points if the parents match this s i t e’s demographics (well educated, both parents work, can afford to hire things out, etc.)
(Without a doubt my biggest surprise in international adoption has been the whole culture around adoptive families. I mainly want to run screaming from all of them, but there have to be good groups somewhere…right?)
Anonymous
Ummm no? You’re required to join an in person group so do that. The idea that a FB group would be any substitute is offensive.
Anon
+1. A fb group is in no ways a substitute for an in-person group.
I find it impossible to believe that you can’t find an in person group in a city that works with a normal work schedule. And if you can’t commit to something one night a week or one night a month, I don’t see how you can raise a child.
Worry About Yourself
I would bring this up with the agency, because if they say in-person, they probably mean it, but may be wiling to work with you to locate a group, or an alternative, if you explain the situation.
Anonymous
If you don’t have time to join a support group, how do you have time for a child? There’s a reason agencies recommend these things.
Anon
Good point.
Anon
No recommendation on the groups but I am glad your agency is making you join support groups. I really hope you actually tried to find international adoptive family support groups and confirmed none in your area instead of assuming they don’t exist and turning to online. If the latter, I urge you to take this more seriously. International adoption is usually cross cultural and being connected to other families in your situation will ultimately help your future adoptee to keep in touch with their home culture and acclimate to your country. Also, don’t discount adopters from different background from you, they may be better resources than you think. NGL, I’m a bit alarmed at your implications of skipping on the prep and preferring to connect with people from your narrow demographic (and trust, statistically well educated two parent well to do people that can outsource a lot of home work is a narrow demographic in most places).
Anon
Are you sure an online group will be a substitute in the agency’s eyes? I feel like this might be something where you have to follow the rules precisely, and I would definitely consult with them. I feel for you though – the people I know who’ve done international adoption are SAHMs with huge families and there’s definitely a white savior tinge to it.
Anon
I hope you know that this s1te is a tiny microcosm of the world – in reality there are very few affluent, dual-earning, very well-educated couples, and that number becomes even smaller when you look at couples who are parents (whether due to birth or adoption). I don’t think expecting an adoptive parents’ FB group to look like this s1te is at all realistic. Maybe if you went to an Ivy or something like that you could find one through your alma mater, but even then, I know a ton of educated, wealthy women who’ve leaned out of work post-kids.

I’m curious where you possibly live (based on your other post) that’s a big city and which you don’t think has this available? NYC definitely does, as does Boston and SF, and I would think it would be incredibly helpful. Parenting is hard and parenting cross-culturally is even harder.

Bonus points if the parents match this site’s demographics (well educated, both parents work, can afford to hire things out, etc.)

+1 – I live in the middle of nowhere and it seems like it’d be way easier to find such a thing in a big city, simply because there are so many fewer people in a 50 mile radius of me than there would be if I lived in a big city. I can see how they would be skewed to SAHMs though.

I don’t have this bag, but I did get a cape from this brand last year for my birthday and it is gorgeous & pretty great quality. It’s something I obviously use less than you’d use this bag, but I was impressed. Hope this helps just a little!

Thank you! That is helpful to hear about the brand.

I have a leather bag from this brand. The quality is excellent and I receive compliments routinely.

Fashion help: Most of my work wardrobe consists of some combination of navy and grey. I can’t figure out what color tights/hose/whatever you want to call them to wear with skirts in the winter, particularly with a navy top/grey skirt combo. Nude looks weird since it looks like bare legs in cold weather (except today, when it is 70 degrees in January, wtf). Navy also somehow doesn’t look right. Do I give up and just wear pants all winter?

I thought the general rule was that tights should match either your skirt or your shoes.
Anon
I don’t know about the general rule. It was Belle from Capitol Hill Style’s rule and a lot of people here have adopted it.

I am that crazy person who wears navy tights and navy shoes. Or with grey, grey tights and grey shoes. I dress in the column of color concept so I just consider it an extension of that. (Column of color means skirt and top in same color, jacket or other topper in a contrasting color.)

I have only black winter shoes and wear black tights all winter. If something doesn’t look right with that, then it is not part of my cold weather wardrobe. I also just don’t buy cold weather clothes that don’t work with black shoes + black tights.
M
Same. There are some really cute dresses that I’ve turned down because their dark neutral is navy and not black. If it doesn’t work with black tights and footwear, it isn’t something I’m going to wear in the winter.

+1. I have a hard time finding actual navy tights so I stick to things that look good with black.
Jeffiner
I have multiple shades of grey tights, and two shades of navy. Different tights look better with different outfits. I wear a lot of navy and grey, too, but my shoes are black. Navy tights with a navy top and grey skirt would have a color-block look, so I’d probably wear grey tights.
MagicUnicorn
I like colors, so a navy sweater and grey skirt would be paired with burgundy tights and black shoes if I were wearing them.

I like sheers in grey or navy for things like this. I have Almost Black, Dove Grey and Navy. I find they blend better than opaque tights.

I wear navy dresses with black tights and black shoes. Same goes for gray dresses.
Boss
I would like to thank the Daily Mail for covering Elizabeth Holmes’s outfit today for her Theranos trial. It is Boss! I generally like Boss, but it doesn’t seem to work for me. I am 5-4, so not all that short, but I have a high waist and really short torso.
If I were likely going to be going to jail, I would wear as close as I could to Boss in court.
[For that matter, no one has provided fashion coverage of anything Varsity Blues related, or did I possibly miss that?]
