Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. New York & Co. is having some crazy sales right now — prices up to 70% off, plus take an extra 15% off with promo code 2400 — lots of pieces come below $10. For today’s TPS, we like this pair of pants, which (strictly speaking) is not on sale (but: buy one and get the second pair 50% off). We like the slight bit of sheen to them, and the general flare; we also like that they come in petites and talls. They’re $46.95 at New York & Co., in sizes 0 through 18. I have not had good luck with NY&Co clothing except for one silky shirt that I sometimes wear when going out. On the other hand, my friend has a suit from there that is really cute, albeit not the best quality. I haven’t seen these pants in person, but I could see them looking kind of cheap.

NY&Co pants (and the brand in general) just don’t work for me. Their sizing is off and the quality is terrible. For $50 you can get much higher quality pants from a lot of other brands. Frankly, I think $20 pants from Old Navy would probably be better quality.
Shayna
I love Old Navy pants — And the stores often have both petites and tall sizes all the way from 00 to 20 which makes shopping a lot easier!
Rachel
A big percentage of my clothes are from NYCO (I love their jeans, and the price is reasonable) and I have about tons of cardigans and various tops. I really don’t like their dress pants though. The fit is always “off” and after a few washes they look really worn out.
That said, I have two suits from NY&Co that I’ve gotten tons of compliments on. But I’m ususally in a business casual/non-profit environment where no one is wearing high-end clothing, so maybe just no one knew any better :-)
KLo
I love my NY&Co. cotton suits I got last year. They look crisp, have a little stretch, and I’m never miserably hot when everyone around me is. And I get a ton of complements in them too!

Thought for sure the Bargain Friday would feature a $1 designer piece from the Outnet! :) But it’s already sold out. Did anyone try to score a deal?
Ru
The pants at New York and Company are the only ones that fit me right, for some reason. A couple of weeks ago, they had a 50% off everything and I stocked up on every pant they had that came in my size (go $25 pants!). I have these pants in navy with a light blue pinstripe and they’re really comfortable. I also like their wide leg pants.
Shayna
Not a fan of New York & Co. — shiny pants (and I’ve seen them – they have more than a slight sheen) aren’t professional — their clothes are aimed at the 20 year old who has an internship and wants to go out at night afterwards, with a lot more emphasis on the going out part than the work part.
Rachel
Ug, I HATE their shiny pants. They also have matching shiny blazers. You can’t tell very well online, but they look terrible in person.
Shayna
Shiny blazes? Ick — I’m having visions of those gold blazers that Century 21 realtors have to wear — like these: http://blazerdepot.com/c21/goldblazers.html

I always try to go into NY&Co with an open mind – they seem to have such great deals! But once I actually see the clothing, I can’t help but think it looks and feels cheap (these pants included). I also think they pick one style of shirt, make it in a billion different colors and call it the “spring collection”.
PG
Don’t the pants look too tight across hips and thighs?
Anon
Yes. The rear view is even worse.
Blonde Lawyer
From the front, no. From the rear, yes, but partly b/c of the position they have the model standing in.
Anon
The position the model is standing in sort of mimics walking though, no? I think that is exactly how the pants would look if you are walking down a hallway.
Blonde Lawyer
For the really business casual environment they have “dress pants” that are more of a lounge pant material. They are very warm and comfortable and great for winter. But, they do look much more casual than a typical dress pant so I pair it w/ a button front shirt and heels to make it more classic.
They also have great elastic waist band pants and skirts. Not old lady style but just simple pull on, no snap, no zipper, style. They are great for anyone with medical conditions that cause bloating. Lots of extra room. Again, not for the court days but for a regular old day in a business casual office.
Anon
Thank you for the reminder not to be so quick to judge. When I started reading your reply about elastic waist band pants and skirts I immediately thought “NOT professional.” But then I got to the part about medical conditions that cause bloating…and felt like a jerk. Never really stopped to think how that might impact a person’s ability to wear more traditionally-tailored suit pants with a zip and button.
So, thanks.
Teresa
I had several pairs of these and loved them. With a sweater or cardigan they really did fit in well in my casual work environment. And bonus… when they got to “pilled” to wear for work they make great lounge pants/pajama bottoms! I still wear them to sleep in and I’ve had them for at least 5 years now.
ERP
I am a size 2. Ok, well not really…just in NY&Co. sizes. I am usually a 4 but will sacrifice quality just to spatter some size 2 NY&Co. pant’s in my closet! Psychological? Yes. But I encourage you all to try it! It is a great trick for “fat days.” :)
Also, even though it is not my personal fav, I always get a number of compliments whenever I wear my one size 2 NY&Co. suit (which by the way cost me less than $100.00).
WR
For those mentioning a bad fit for NYCO pants, could you be more specific? Good-fitting pants are so hard to find; it is helpful to know the type of fit used by different brands.
anon
The pants are high-waisted, so they always give me muffin-top, even though my stomach is flat and I have a narrow waist. I like NY&Co pajamas and their jersey camis, and you can find some cute accessories there.
Anonymous
for me, it always seems like NY&Co pant have too much room in the saddlebag area and, well, i don’t have saddlebags…
s-k-s
For me, something is just off in the hip-to-waist ratio, so that they gap in some places and are too tight in others. IMHO, they use a poor quality of construction/pattern, so the fit isn’t adjusted right accross their sizes.
kandi
I used to love to shop at NY&Co, but I think I’ve outgrown them, it’s not really my style anymore. I think the quality is more than a little off! Their pants are also a little short, or maybe I’m just a little tall, either way they don’t work for me. They have a few cute Friday cardigans though.
Anonymous
Me too…I feel like I’ve outgrown the store as well. However, I still have a couple of their button-front shirts that are a staple in my wardrobe (fitted, but not tight) and still look crisp after a years of wear.
divaliscious11
The knit pants mentioned above are very comfy. I love them and get a couple pair every year. They aren’t multi-season wear pants, but they aren’t multi-season wear price either.

ooh, wonderful! on that note, did anyone buy this dress that was featured a while back and have comments on how it fits? I’m mainly wondering if it would be too slim cut up top for my well-endowed (34DD) chest…

Yes, I bought that dress and I love it! BUT, I am slender with a small (not flat) bust. To be perfectly honest, I do not think it would look right on a top-heavy person. The skirt is very full so it would be perfect for a pear-shape, but the top is low-cut and far from providing full coverage from a big bust, unless you are going for the “hot mama” look.
meg
Thank you so much for letting me know. The too-low top + full skirt was exactly what I was a smidge worried about….isn’t it funny how we are attracted to the looks that just won’t work for us?
KelliJ
These really look cheap. The material looks thin, unlined and shiny. I have to admit that I never shop at NY&Co. The clothes just don’t appeal to me.
Lawgirl
I used to be a NY&Co snob after walking in several years ago and finding things cheap, wrinkly, and fugly. They’ve up’d their game since then, though, and even Carrson Kressley consults and shills for them, so there’s cred right there!. LOL. I’ve gotten cute tops, blazers, vests, and cardigans at NY&Co. I bought some skinny ponte pants that are so cute with boots and/or on a casual Friday in the office. I *love* their costume jewelry — heavy and substantial and well-made. Even the “leatherette” purses are cute and very “real” looking. Give ’em a chance, high-achieving girlfriends!
Shayna
I used to be very anti-ponte pants because as a fat girl, wearing them was just waaay to cliche and close to the stretch pants that seem to be the mainstay of stores aimed at larger women… now that I’m thinner I may have to try them – I love comfort, but the least time I wore them I found them too close to pajama pants…
Liz
Why must everything these days have a slight sheen to it? Don’t you think it makes things look a little cheaper and synthetic?
housecounsel
Sheen = cheap and synthetic for sure.
