I'm happy to see that the huge, oversized leather hobo/tote is coming back in style, and this Tom Ford is an excellent example. (Maybe it's me, but in terms of definitions I think this one looks more like a hobo than a N/S tote — but they call it a tote, so who knows.)
I like the pebbled leather, and the olive color here is an unusual color that will play nicely with neutrals like black, navy, white, brown, and even gray. The bag is $1,990. Alix large textured-leather tote
On the slightly more affordable side, I think the AllSaints Kita convertible bag looks similar, but again, maybe that's me. This $53 bag also has a similar vibe.

Clothing Expenditures 2017
Can we do an annual clothing budget round-up?
2017 clothing spending:
2017 income:
Best purchase of 2017:
Worst purchase of 2017:
2018 clothing budget:
OP
Here’s mine:
2017 clothing spending: ~$4,000
2017 income: $90,000
Best purchase of 2017: Navy wool wrap coat
Worst purchase of 2017: A couple of final sale items that didn’t quite fit right.
2018 clothing budget: $1,000 (hoping I made enough big “investment” purchases in the past couple of years that I can really step back this year!)
Anonymous
2017 clothing spending:$3,600
2017 income:~230 household
Best purchase of 2017: black theory suit. But it was a tough choice because I was so mindful of my shopping that I love almost everything.
Worst purchase of 2017: green skinny cargo pants from the gap. I like them in theory but never seem to reach for them.
2018 clothing budget:$2,000 plus a suit. I wear suits about 4 days a week so I buy one every year.
Love these threads!
Here's me
Great idea but consider reposting this tomorrow morning (we tend not to get a lot of posts in the afternoon!)
2017 clothing spending: ~ $3657
2017 income: $162,000 individually, household income $450 K
Best purchase of 2017: Zella lounge pants for sleeping ($70), Spanx high power shorts ($40), Jcrew skirt suit ($200) – finally a suit that I like!!!
Worst purchase of 2017: Rothys flats ($145) – so cute but so stinky
2018 clothing budget: $3000. On my wish list is a beautiful wool coat in a fun color and upgraded shoes for work (I’m still wearing old Calvin Kleins that should have been tossed a while ago)
ha
I love how your HH income is 450K and your favorite purchase is a $40 pair of Spanx. Rock on!
Monday
Wet blanket here, but: comments on these threads always show a bias toward frugality (and probably to some extent toward higher incomes). I’m always super impressed with everyone’s financial strength, and how little they spend, but then I remember that stats on these topics show that very few people live below their means, and most have consumer debt. People are less likely to post about that.
Anon
Well we are also highly skewed toward BigLaw and similar professionals who are much less likely to be in consumer debt. Mortgages and student loans are another question…

2017 clothing spending: ~$1100 – I know I forgot a few things.
2017 income: $90,000 (that’s family income, but I only tracked my clothing purchases)
Best purchase of 2017: Probably the navy/white striped sheath from Land’s End, but I had a lot of really good Land’s End purchases last year.
Worst purchase of 2017: The $8 grey blazer from Target that I have yet to wear and sits in my office for emergencies. Granted, only $8, but still.
2018 clothing budget: Unknown – having a baby in June so I’ll either be able to make everything work or have to buy a bunch of new stuff when I go back to work in September.
Jeffiner
2017 clothing spending: ~$6200. I decided that if I managed to reach my goal weight, my reward would be new clothes. This year I achieved that goal
2017 income: $125,000 individually, $250,000 family
Best purchase of 2017: A black and grey striped dress from Modcloth, for $65. I wear it to work, on the weekends, in the summer, in the fall. Its great.
Worst purchase of 2017: A pair of yellow trousers from Boden, for $81. I love the way the color, and the theory of colored pants, but these don’t fit me great to begin with and get really stretched out and frumpy over the course of the day.
2018 clothing budget: ~$1000. I’m going to try and not buy clothes for this year, but work more on my accessory game.
Legally Brunette
Congrats on reaching your goal weight!
Never too many shoes...
As ever with these threads, I am impressed that people have any track at all of what they bought for themselves last year. I have literally no idea.

Same! I know whatever I spent, it was less than usual, because I had a big move (further minimizing my want for more stuff), and I was underemployed and working from home from Jan-May…like, leggings and tunics were enough!
I’m always so impressed! Keep it up, rett es!
Legally Brunette
It’s really easy though. Just set up an excel spreadsheet. One column for “Date purchased”, one column “Item” and one column “Price”. Every time you buy a piece of clothing add it the list, it just takes a few seconds. Then at the end of the year you use the “sum” function to add up all the number under the “Price” column. I also add columns for “Store” and “Brand” because I like to keep track of where I get my clothes and the brands I gravitate towards, but that’s not essential. At the end of the year, I highlight in green my favorite purchases and in red the purchases that I regretted.
I’ve done this for the last 8 years and I love going back and seeing what I bought, what I loved, what I regretted, how my purchasing varied by the years, etc. It’s also helped me keep track of returns. It’s been extremely helpful for me. Also, it helps me figure out what my “holes” are and what I tend to buy too much of (dresses in my case).
I was also completely underestimating my purchases by at least half, so writing everything down was a wake up call. Highly recommend this approach.
Anonymous
I’m a Virgo and could just never do this. I have too many mandatory tasks already to add an optional one.
Ellen
What does your ZODIACK sign have to do with keeping track of things? If you are responsible enough to hold a job, you must have nice clotheing to do your job well! In my case, the manageing partner tracks all of my work clotheing b/c I get reimbursed for a percentage of it EVERY year, and it is styled as a bonus so he can deduct it. Dad told me that he wanted to change it’s characterization b/c it is taxeable to me, but I don’t care as long as I get reimbursed. Dad is very much into the tax detail b/c we have to pay so much to the IRS. FOOEY!
Pompom
This does sound amazing and like it gives you some really good data on your spending and purchasing! But I got to say I’m with the poster below you: I’m not sure I can add this reliably to my task list! I shop relatively infrequently at this point but I love hearing about when other people do. Totally lazy shopping/money voyeur!
Jeffiner
I never tracked my clothing spending until I saw this thread in 2016. I thought it would be fun.

2017 clothing spending: $15,000
2017 income: $250k
Best purchase of 2017: MM Lafleur dress that I would wear every day if I could
Worst purchase of 2017: A very expensive beige coat that is totally the wrong color for me
2018 clothing budget: $1200
I have a small closet and a capsule approach to getting dressed, and I basically need zero new clothes at this point. My 2018 clothing budget is largely going to replacing a few pairs of uncomfortable shoes and replacing a couple of other clothing items that don’t fit that well.
Legally Brunette
Which MMLF dress?
I hear you on the beige coat. I wore one for WAY too long (like 8 years) only to discover that color completely washed me out.
Anon
The Angela. It’s a sleeved sheath dress that they unfortunately discontinued before I could buy multiples…
Anon
2017 clothing spending: $1500?
2017 income: $130k HCOLA
Best purchase of 2017: the gray wool a-line skirt from the Talbot’s outlet for $19 – its cost per wear is going to be mere cents soon
Worst purchase of 2017: the tomato red blazer (also from the Talbot’s outlet) for $35 – its gorgeous, but I never reach for it
2018 clothing budget: $1500?
And an early shout out for the best purchase of the 2018: Kamik Momentum snow boots. Depending on your size and the color you want, they’re as little as $60 on Amazon. It was 3* in New Hampshire this weekend and my feet were toasty the whole time.
EquityPartnerAnon
2017: ~5,000 (shockingly high for me); many refreshes due to aging staples and changes to work dress code
2017: about 100x that
Best: $40 sweatpants WITH POCKETS that I bought when the temp dipped 25 degrees when I was on travel; the hot pink BR suit + extra pair of pants for it (never worn yet as a suit); Aquitalia boots (Nordstrom sale)
Worst: skinny heels (not their fault but fatal heel scrape occurred in month 1 of ownership); revamped bathing suit lineup that I was not comfortable wearing (but hail to the rashguards that got me out anyway); tons of attempts at denim for work that I ultimately Did Not Love but were just OK.
Budget: to borrow from Marie Kondo: whatever sparks joy (and purging what doesn’t). Guessing <$2000
Anon
2017 clothing spending: $2300 (total for my husband and me, but I did not include Christmas gifts we bought for each other)
2017 income: ~$300K household (though most goes to hefty student loans)
Best purchase of 2017: A cute fuzzy cardigan from Loft and a pair of deeply discounted ($80) Aquatalia booties.
Worst purchase of 2017: A couple of AT blouses that gape weirdly at the neckline and make me feel uncomfortable.
2018 clothing budget: Depends. Crossing fingers that I will have to buy maternity clothes. Otherwise hope to keep it about the same as 2017.
Miss
2017 spending: no clue
2017 income: $120k
Best purchase: tie between my $30 Eddie Bauer down coat with hood and my Costco jogger outfit with pockets
Worst purchase: black London Fog jacket from Amazon that has weird zippers
2018 budget: $0 I have too many clothes so I’m not buying any new clothes or shoes this year
Torin
2017 spend: ~2k
2017 income: ~110k
2018 goal: $1k
I decided to go on two $500 shopping sprees, because at the end of 2017 I was feeling good about not having bought that much in the way of clothes, and then was really surprised at size of the number when I added it all up on my spreadsheet. I feel like it’s easier to justify things to myself when they’re spread out throughout the year, and then I end up buying things that don’t work out on impulse. My goal this year is to not do that and control spending with this spree approach. The winter spree is already done and I feel good about my purchases (a couple of skirts, a couple of sweaters, and a pair of boots).
Anonymous
2017 spending: $1,900 for the household (me, husband, 5 year old)
2017 income: $175k (household)
Best purchase: Victoria Beckham for Target sequined insect dress. God I love this dress.
Worst purchase: lint magnet J Crew Factory cotton pants, although I do wear them for lack of better options
2018 budget: hopefully a bit less. I lost about 25 pounds last year and had to revamp my wardrobe.
legal canuck
2017 clothing spending: $250 (I wear court clothes most days)
2017 income: $65,000 (CAD)
Best purchase of 2017: My Willow and thread dress pants $8.00 (marked down from $85.00)
Worst purchase of 2017: Victoria Secret Bra. Bought it and then lost 30 pounds. Now it is way too big.
2018 clothing budget: $700 (I am starting a new job where I need to wear real clothes not court clothes. That said, the dress code is very casual).
Another Legal Canuck in THE gov town
2017 clothing spending: ~$1500
2017 Income: HH of $250K
Best Purchase of 2017: Camel Coat by Esprit (after I missed a consigned Max Mara), $100
Worst Purchase of 2017: a couple of “fun” daywear dresses by a German company the in-store personal dresser recommended, $115 each (they are too loud for me but was swayed because we were doing a Transatlantic repatriation on Queen Mary 2)
2018 Budget: $500
I wear a uniform four days a week and have an existing classic wardrobe from ten years in private practice. I need virtually nothing and spent a lot in 2016/2017 because we were posted to Europe and I love the clothes so I bought all the stuff that wears out (like Danish knitwear ) and a few investment pieces like British suiting, $500 leather lined wellies, and an expensive Aigle Trench.
Ellen
It is a tote, not a HOBO, Kat! I would not spend $2000 on any kind of tote, let alone a nice leather one! I think I will start giveing all my handbags away in favor of larger totes and hoboe’s. I think I look cuter with a bigger bag, then less cute with a smaller bag. What is the HIVE’s view? Do women look more petite when they carry larger satchel’s? I think so! And we appear more vulnerable when we are schlepping alot of stuff around. FOOEY!

Just got a rejection email for a job I badly wanted. The process of applying to government jobs infuriates me – I didn’t even get past their automated system that filters people out. It was another “you were qualified but not among the most qualified candidates to be referred to the hiring manager” automated email. I’ve been trying to work for the government for 3 years, what gives? Not a lawyer; I’m in criminal intelligence. I’m ready to give up and pursue something else but have no idea what else I would want to do as crime, counterterrorism, national security, etc are my passion. I feel lost.
Anonymous
You need to make contacts and get your resume to actual people. The HR filters weeding you out do so on keywords. People who get your resume are more likely to say – let’s bring this person in for a 1st round – as they’re allowed to go around HR and consider other applications they get from any other source.
Anon
I think this isn’t true for all federal government jobs. For a lot of non-lawyer jobs, the hiring official is limited to only those candidates that scored at the top of the HR screen.
Another Anon
Your specialty is especially hard-hit by veterans’ preference. It’s a numbers game (run via points system) and you may never get through. My friends with similar jobs/interests have generally given up on being proper feds and are contractors.
But if you’d like to be a proper fed long-term, I’d apply for other government jobs that use your skill set, and work to transfer jobs after a few years. You would be in a better position as a current fed to transfer into another fed job, instead of being an outsider with no veterans’ preference.
Anonymous
Getting your name to someone will not help for federal employment. OP – as someone else mentioned, the federal employee pool is so saturated with veterans that you are likely being knocked out by those with veteran’s preference. I would suggest you try to get a job with a federal contractor and after a few years apply for a federal position that is a merit-based promotion. In merit-based postings (generally these are for those with several years experience), veteran’s preference is not taken into account and you could have a better chance of getting in. Though you will be competing against other feds.
Anon
That sucks. I guess there isn’t anything you can do with the private sector? No experience but this seems like a hot field with a lot of needs. Is cyber security something you could pivot into?
Jaded
I’m currently in the private sector but badly want to move over to the government
Anonymous
Are you applying just federally or state level as well? Some larger local prosecutors offices might have jobs you are interested in, and they may not use filters (at least my office doesn’t).
Anon
Just wanted to sympathize with you. The federal government hiring process is so frustrating. I wish I knew the secret to getting in because it seems impossible sometimes. When there isn’t a hiring freeze, it seems like every position has hundreds if not thousands of applicants. I know people who have gotten through though, so don’t give up hope. Do something nice for yourself this weekend.
EquityPartnerAnon
FWIW, I would have gladly taken a govt job. Didn’t get one, so I stayed in BigLaw. It is crazy. I’d still like to have been through a rotation in my field, but I guess it will never happen absent being a political appointee of some sort.
Ellen
Hug’s to you. It is hard to get a government job b/c the pay is good, and the hours are perfect. If you do not want to make a fortune and want plenty of free time (and great benefits), go with the government. I did this during my summers, and could not get a permanent job there either. In the long run, it may be better that you stay away from those jobs b/c many of the people are petty, and do not like women who are cuter then they are. That is what happened to me. I was also seen as underqualified, but in reality, the full timers did not want me there b/c I was not interested in kow-towing to them. The men wanted to date me and the women were jelous of me b/c the men were only interested in me. The guys also spent a lot of time stareing out the window at women who walked by, and they “ranked” them 1-10, as if they were abel to think they had a chance with them! DOUBEL FOOEY on that!
So don’t worry, you will do fine in the private secter, the way I did! YAY!!!!

This is going to be TMI, but I’ve been having my period for over 2 weeks now. Has this happened to anyone? Is there any reason to be concerned? FWIW, I’m in my early 40s and I’ve always had longest periods, but usually not longer than 10 days.

Does anyone have a career coach in DC or someone who’ll work with a dc person remotely? Lawyer – likely wants to stay in law but wouldn’t be opposed to business jobs either — just not in the right fit right now and don’t know what I want/how to start. I think it may help to talk to someone who isn’t a recruiter. Also more importantly – how much does something like this cost?
Pompom
No idea on cost. But I’ve recommended a former colleague here before, Matthew Pascocello, through Ellen Ostrow’s company. He’s not a recruiter, but he is an attorney himself. He’s approachable, realistic, and has experience in markets across the country and with all different types of practice (and not!).
Pompom

Anonymous
Seen that name here before. A law school career services guy? I’m sure he’s nice but they tend to be removed from the real world and from professional issues beyond 1-2 yrs post grad.
Pompom
I know that’s the prevailing situation, yes…I hear ya. But I also know Matthew personally, and he makes a real effort to not be in the law school space like 85% of the time. He spends about that much time removed from the recent grad space. Like most coaches in this arena, you can always do a call to assess whether you’re happy with their style and worldview.
Good luck!
Pompom
Oh, also meant to include another former colleague here (same industry; like Matthew, not the same actual work place): Rachael Bosch, who has her own attorney-focused pd consulting firm. She does individual coaching, in addition to group and corporate coaching. Not an attorney, but former PD professional at a big dc firm.

Kate Neville – really liked her
Ellen
you may want to contact some law profesors in DC–they often know people and were always interested in helping me, tho you have to look out for the leches.
Ellen
DC law profesors are the best. Some of them have worked both sides of the fences and were always interested in helping me. You do have to watch out for a few of them who are more interested in examining your female anatomy then your career. FOOEY!

I recently bought the LL Bean flannel duvet and sheet set and it is so luxurious. Very pleased with the quality.
Now I’m looking for a spring/summer duvet – percale cotton – that gives me the same “ooh ahh” feeling. Any recs?

How about LL Bean’s percale duvet cover? I have 2 sets of their percale sheets and love them!

Target’s percale sheets are so, so nice.

Not sure on the duvet, but I got the sheets recommended on Wirecutter, Royal Velvet400 ct. from JC Penney. Doesn’t sound luxurious, but definitely feels that way. I love them so much I got a second set for my bed and two sets for my kid’s bed.

I know there are several photographers on this board. How do you carry your camera when you’re out and about? Standard neck strap? Does that change if you’re in a crowded city vs. the countryside? Is it possible to be cool and fashionable and have your camera out?
BabyAssociate
I have the Lo & Sons camera bag. It’s a nice bag that doesn’t look like a camera bag, but only works for days when I’m carrying one extra smallish lens.
Anonymous
if I’m actively shooting, neckstrap; in between active shooting, I have a padded bag insert that i stick into a tote or a backpack. I like the tote because it doesn’t scream “camera equipment”. sometimes I just stick it into my purse and carry a scarf to provide extra cushioning if I’m out and about (Paris, Mexico City, Iceland)

Do you have a special kind of neckstrap or just the one that came with the camera?

I have a bag from Epiphanie that I like. It has removable foam dividers in it and looks like a purse.

What do you do with business cards that you receive? I’ve recently moved from a technical position in academia (where business cards are rarely used) to a mid-senior nonprofit role where I meet so many people. Do I keep all the cards, and if so, in what sort of container? Do I scan them and pitch them, and if so, what software works well for organizing? Do I just connect with everyone on LinkedIn and put them as an Outlook contact and then trash the cards? Right now the cards are piling up in my desk drawer under my lip balm and granola bars, which doesn’t seem like the optimal solution.
Sloan Sabbith
They’re clipped together by a binder clip hanging on my office bulletin board right now. I generally tend to remember I met “that one person, the one who works at X!” and look through the stack pretty quickly.
Anon
I would add them on LinkedIn/make an Outlook contact and maybe take a picture of the card before throwing it away if you weren’t sure you could reach the person with it. I wouldn’t keep them though.
Anon
I’m in politics, so business cards are my life. I binder clip (or rubberband if there’s too many of them) by topic – ok, these people are from this agency; these people are tied to this interest; etc. Then I use one of those little 2″ post-its and stick it on the top of the stack to label it with something I can read quickly. The stacks live in a desk drawer. I’m visual and don’t love Outlook contacts – I prefer keeping the physical card – that way I can later picture their card, company logo, and title in my mind.
Anon
Oh, and I often make a little note on the back of the card with memorable details about the person right after I finish meeting with them.
Sloan Sabbith
I do the same. Total, total gamechanger for me re: business cards. Helps me remember names, too!
shadow
I bought a business card folder from Daiso which works well for me since I haven’t gotten a lot of them. But it is limited in capacity.
So I recommend getting a binder and buying baseball card holders (the same ones you’d use for extreme couponing) and putting the business cards in there. You can use index dividers as necessary to sort them if you wish.
I write on the back of each one the date I met them, and the event/location, and a short thing about them so I remember who they are.
Anon
Truthfully, I stuff them in my pocket/bag and then end up losing them.
KateMiddletown
I’m late to the game but recommending an app called BCR Pro – I think I paid a few bucks for it 5 years ago and it scans and creates a spreadsheet (which you can upload into Outlook/whatever) of all the information. It’s not always 100% correct w/ the info but it’s such a timesaver.

Does anyone know the deadline by which health savings accounts have to send you the tax forms? I feel like it’s January 31 but can’t find confirmation of that online anywhere. I’m so anxious to file my taxes early this year because I was a victim of the Equifax breach. I have all my W-2s and know exactly how much of a refund I’m getting but I can’t officially file without those HSA forms.

The IRS won’t accept returns until January 31 anyway, at which point you’ll likely have your HSA statement.

Sounds like IRS will start accepting e-filed returns on Jan 29.

Check the General Instructions for Certain Returns (part M)
1099-SA (Distribution of HSA funds) Due to Recipient by Jan 31
5498-SA (Contributions to an HSA fund) Due to Recipient by May 31 -because they are waiting to account for any contributions made in 2018 for the benefit of the 2017 tax year. But you should be able to figure this number out from your statements. Obviously you have to file before you get this – but you don’t include the 5498 in your return, you just need the information.
Boden elsa ottoman review
Anxiously awaiting the rest of my boden order coming from the UK but I already got the Elsa ottoman dress and it is amazing, per all of the other excellent reviews on thsi site. I’m sad that I can’t wear it until the weather warms up, since it’s short sleeved and pink. If anyone is wondering, I was unsure since a lot of their dresses seem short-waisted so I ordered a long (I’m somewhat long waisted but not that tall at 5’6″). The fit is perfect and the lining makes it fall so nicely. I’m waiting for a plaid blazer now and I’m so excited based on the quality of the dress and their customer service has been excellent.

I have that exact dress! I ilke the elbow sleeve length version of the Elsa ottoman dress better – I get so many compliments over the oxygen blue one. All of their ottoman dresses are so great!

I’m 5’7 and have had real problems with their dresses being short-waisted. Do you feel you’ll have to hem the Tall to get it to a nice length?

For anyone else who struggles to focus–
I got obsessed with the idea of an hour glass/sand timer. I got a few (b/c I’m extra) for Christmas, including a vintage one from Etsy with some pink sand! :)
It’s been really helpful to me in terms of focusing/visual representation of time going by (no idea why the actual clock does not impart the same urgency!)
also looks classy on the desk! :)

This is a silly question for a 36 year old woman to ask but… my new insurance plan doesn’t have any OBGYNs who have regular doctor’s offices/practices – the only OBGYNs that are in network are at/in the local hospital. I don’t mean that they have admitting privileges at the hospital, I mean that’s where their office is. I’m totally confused by this and just need regular OBGYN care, nothing special. Is seeing a regular doctor at a hospital a thing?

Very common esp for academic health systems. They either have a separate building on the health system campus that has all the outpatient departments or will have office suites to see regular patients looked someplace in the main hospital building. It’s not like you’ll be going up to the maternity ward. You will still go to a dr office suite just as you would in any office building or office park.

Where are you located? I’ve never heard of this in Houston. But if they have a phone number you can call at the hospital maybe you can just call and inquire?

I’m in Houston and me and all my female friends go to OBGYNs at hospitals in the med center. Same in most of the midwest cities I’ve previously lived in as well. This is pretty common.

I’ve lived in California, the Midwest and New England and have always seen doctors (both OBs and PCPs) who are located in a hospital complex. It’s common. Hospitals are normally big and have many buildings, and the doctors offices are separate from the areas where people are hospitalized.

Yes, my first OBGYN officed at a hospital. He had even recently stopped doing obstetrics and was still there. It was at a women’s hospital, but I just saw him for routine care.

My OBGYN is at the hospital. The local hospital has a “medical office building” with a lot of different kinds of doctors, so it’s not like I’m visiting the ER when I see my doctor. I think it’s pretty normal. And if you plan to get pregnant, it’s convenient because you don’t have to go somewhere else for blood work and ultrasounds.

I didn’t have this for my OB, but did for an endocrinologist and another doctor. I thought it was weird too, at first, but turns out it is pretty normal!

Yes. I have been a patient of several doctors whose offices are located in Medical Office Buildings attached to hospitals. My daughter’s pediatrician is also currently in one. Quite common in my experience in large cities and near universities with medical schools.
